>> reporter: and that executive order about obamacare trying to take the first steps toward repealing, the signature achievement of barack obama. that is limited in power. urging the agencies that have some involvement to begin to dial things back. congress will need to do more. the new white house also urged congress to swiftly approve the nominees for cabinet posts. it was expected that president trump would visit the cia as early as today, but the director has not been confirmed. sheinelle. >> kelly, thank you. >> let's get to hallie jackson a few miles from the white house. that is where president trump is set to attend a prayer service this morning. hallie, good morning to you. >> good morning, craig. the president now waking up in the white house for the first time just a couple of miles from where we are. after that, this morning, first thing, heading here to the national cathedral for a prayer service. he will be joined by vice president mike pence. this is an inter-faith service

and a long time tradition for new presidents dating back to george washington. like a lot of things that president donald trump does, a bit of controversy with reports of episcopalians with trump visiting the church with the comments about mexicans and muslims and others. the president, after he leaves here, will have a busy day. you heard kelly mention the possible visit to the cia that is unlikely to happen. we do know that there is, again, a lot of folks expected to speak at the service. including familiar faces from the campaign trail. cleveland pastor darryl scott is leading one of the addresses here. he is somebody part of the president's national diversity council when he was candidate trump. another busy day for the president and vice president here in washington. craig. >> hallie jackson, thank you. protest marches are planned in all 50 states today. the largest in washington, d.c.

hundreds of thousands of women are expected to march in the nation's capital today after protests turned violent. windows shattered and limo burning. nbc's jacob rascon in the middle of it all. he is cover today's march. >> reporter: good morning. sheinelle, they expect up to 200,000 people here. they willm march down independence avenue. d.c. police are preparing up to 500,000 people. they hope it will be more peaceful than yesterday. >> many of you going to the march on washington. >> reporter: they are pour in the capital from across the country. the women's march on washington expecting more people than the inauguration. >> we just want to make our voices known. >> reporter: what organizers

hope is a peaceful demonstration. after a violent day of protests on friday. >> throwing rocks at police. >> reporter: a small group with masks and wearing black with bricks and hammers clashing with police for hours. officers in riot gear responding with pepper spray and flash bang grenades. >> i don't know what it was about. people got aggressive. a lot of people are really angry right now. >> reporter: protesters breaking windows and starting fires. the driver of the limo says he was hit with a brick. thousands descended on the capitol during the inauguration. most of them peaceful. >> if you're not terrified, you are not paying attention. >> reporter: but overshadowed by agitators. tensions high across the country, including new york and chicago. out west in portland, oregon, protesters threw rocks and

bottles at officers. in seattle, at the university of washington, authorities say one person suffered a life threatening gunshot wound at a protest against a right wing speaker that brought crowds of trump supporters and protesters head-to-head. here in d.c., police arrested 217 people yesterday and charged them with rioting. they have to appear in court this morning. in addition, six police officers injured during the clashes. police hoping today will be different. sheinelle. >> jacob, thank you. >> our thoughts and prayers with the officers. protests not only taking place here in the united states, but around the world as well. from tokyo to berlin to manila. in london as well, a protest getting under way there just a few minutes ago. all of these protests come with many folks apprehensive of president trump and ties to russia with the intelligence community saying the russians tried to help get him elected.

president at inaugural, let's bind up the nation's wounds everybody after a bruising campaign last year. what we heard yesterday is more in the historical tradition of a convention speech or campaign speech. you usually have an effort by a president to say to the opposition. i know you didn't vote for me, but rest easy. there are ways we can do things together. not much of that yesterday. >> hugh, what about political perspective? >> i was on set yesterday with michael and lester and chuck. it was a shocking speech, tom brokaw. it has grown on me overnight. it was effective and blunt and honest. as i re-read it this morning, it is serving notice on elites. especially bureaucratic elites that donald trump is concerned with people left behind. i was also reflecting tonight we will see a movie called "moonlight honored." a grim movie. that is about the real america that washington elites don't

talk about. while i like president trump's graciousness to president clinton and secretary clinton at the lunch, this is growing on me. the honesty of it is bracing. we waited for that for a long time. >> hugh, you acknowledge the speech was dark. >> it was grim. i used that on set with michael yesterday. a lot of the country is in a grim place. i come back to that like the movie "moonlight." it is grim in many places. president trump was speaking to the forgotten man. using the fdr phrase. on one respect, it did not have the bind up of wounds of the lincoln second inaugural, but a lot of directness of what america has to do. i love the first executive order, craig. that was a direct assault on the fact that the hobby lobby decision came down two years ago and hhs is yet to provide the relief. >> it is still clear what those executive orders will do. i want to play the sound here at

the capitol after the inaugural address. take a listen. >> i'll tell you, there is something that i wanted to say. i was very honored. very, very honored when i heard that president bill clinton and secretary hillary clinton were coming today. i think it is appropriate to say. i would like you to stand up. >> michael, what do you make of that moment at the lunch, but not at the address? >> i think it was lovely, but the problem is that moment was seen by few people and heard by them compared to the number of people who heard his inaugural address. i think the thing here is if donald trump were coming in the inaugural with let's say a 72% an proefpproval rating like pre obama, perhaps he has margin for error. during the transition, he went for the high 40s in the popular

vote on election day, to if the polls are right, approval of 8 to 10 points lower. that is not the right direction. if his intention is to confront congress and people who may not agree with his program and say you better fear me because i'm more popular than you are, that is not the way to do it. >> michael and hugh, thank you. what can we expect from the first 100 days of the trump administration? steve kornacki is here with us. >> let's take a look at the 100 day sprint. the noise trump made about and what can he do? we have been talking bengal abo. he issued the executive order, craig. it is unclear what it means. there is some talk here that maybe this is a shot at the individual mandate and requirement that people have to buy health care policies. if that gets gutted, supporters of the law say that law itself

is as good as gone. the administration clhips away and what would they replace it with? that has to get through congress. that is a big process. that is ahead. immigration. do daca. the children of undocumented immigrants. they are here. the obama administration has offered protections to them. it is expected the trump administration will rescind those. and the 10 million undocumented in the country. how many will be targeted for deportation? that is a question as well. building the wall. donald trump said he will get mexico to pay for it. we will see if he can. and trade. tpp. he campaigned against it. that is probably as good as gone. nafta. he said he would renegotiate. tariffs for china. see what he proposes. and russia. you mentioned putin.

will there be a visit with vladimir putin? and how about the last minute sanctions that president obama placed on russia? will trump keep those or get rid of those? >> steve, it will be a busy 100 days. thank you for that. let's get to the other top stories right now. >> breaking overnight. search and rescue teams heading to the site of a tornado touchdown in the hattisburg, mississippi area. people may be trapped in their homes. power lines are down. i-59 is blocked by debris. officials are asking the public to avoid traveling. we will have more coming up in a moment. in california, heavy rain causing damage. former president obama's vacation flight to palm springs was diverted friday. this flood-soaked hillside in los angeles actually gave way as you can see there. and 20 people had to be rescued from the el capitan area as the flash floods hit their cars. and more survivors taken

from the hotel in the avalanche in italy. we have lucy cavanaugh with more from london. >> reporter: after two days of searching in sub zero temperatures. cheers of joy erupted as crews pulled more survivors from the deadly avalanche in central italy. 10 people have been found alive at the luxury hotel where dozens were trapped. buried by heavy snow after a series of devastating earthquakes and one of the worst snow storms in italy's history. >> it shard is hard to work. >> reporter: four of the trapped are children. a 6-year-old girl was one of the remaining three children rescued overnight. reuniting a family of four. one known survivor remains trapped in what is left of the hotel. emergency crews are still searching despite the difficult

terrain. they are hoping for more survivors of the more than 30 people trapped when the hotel was destroyed. and at least four bodies recovered so far. rescue teams are working day and night until everyone is accounted for. sheinelle, that 6-year-old girl rescued, the first thing she asked for is oreo cookies. >> so precious. lucy, thank you. >> we were talking about this wild weather down south, indra. >> it feels like springtime. it is not with us just for a day, but the several days. you can see we have tornado watches and warnings. they have been going through the overnight hours while you are asleep. that threat continues with us over the next several days. we have been talking about california and itthe storms. the same energy on the gulf states. all of that energy from the gulf coast. what is making feel like springtime is the temperatures which are 10 to 20 degrees above

normal this time of year. that is the reason we are seeing spring-like weather. severe storms in two enhanced areas today and in the overnight hours. jackson and pensacola and tallahassee. by tomorrow, still looking at the severe weather threat. be advised as you go through the overnight hours. find a way to get the good morning bay area. we are waking up to another microclimate red alert yet again across the bay area, seeing a number of showers moving through the bay area right now. as we make our way to san jose, driving along 101, we are seeing heavy downpours and of course this cause an issue of ponding water along the roadways. a quick check of the doppler radar. we are seeing a number of cells push through and expecting scattered showers through the early morning. so as always, it is nice to

at micro forecast. a lot is going on. >> a microclimate alert the past few days. tracking a series of storms hopefully by this weekend may be in the clear. for now, right now in the south bay, 46 degrees. peninsula, 48. you may start seeing a number of scattered showers that did come in from overnight and are expected to continue until about the 7:00 or 8:00 a.m. hour. the biggest issue making your way outdoors is ponding water along roadways. as the storm cells make they're way through, a look at radar, we start seeing the heaviest of the downpours that could cause a lot of issues out on the roadways where the water begins to pond. a live look now. south san jose could see showers. san francisco is expected to see showers and we'll keep an eye on the store. >> check in about 30 minutes. vianey, thanks. highway 17 is back open after a case of deja vu, a large tree blocked a portion of the

highway in the santa cruz mountains. it happened during the evening commute stopping traffic and leaving some drivers completely stranded. the three did it near redwood. hundreds of cars stuck well past midnight. the chp closed 17 southbound add bear creek road before they did, you see that man? spray painted three-plus hours on his towel and held it up telling other drivers to exit immediately. >> try to help people go -- not go through the damage i did. >> we are also told three buses full of high schoolers were stuck there well into the night. dozens of people living in hollis str forced from their homes because of major flooding there. the pacheco creek is flowing through lover's creek as it's called. the levee broke for the second time in two weeks. 21 people and dozens of farm animals had to be rescued. the county declared a local emergency.

cathedral later this morning that as hundreds of thousands are making their way to the capital for this morning's largest protest. the women's march on washington. protests are planned in 450 states today. southern california suffered some severe weather friday causing flooding and mudslides. the wet weather forced former president obama's plane to divert its landing. the former first family plans to enjoy their first post-presidency vacation in palm springs. former president george h.w. bush and barbara bush both in good spirits this morning and their health seems to be improving. the former president will remain in the icu for observation. he is in comfortable and stable condition. mrs. bush by his side and will stay over the weekend as a precaution. we are told they watched friday's coverage of the inauguration on tv from the hospital. let's start this half hour with the download.

of when you think of southern california. think of the amount of rainfall pushing all the way down through southern california as we go through, again, tomorrow evening. heavy amounts of rain. let's talk about these amounts. very atypical when you say southern california. amounts over three inches of rain. typically you see that farther to the north and definitely some flooding concern as we move into that region and heavy amounts of snow. another four to five feet of snow in the sierra, unbelievable. one thing making headlines is the surf. huge swells out there, 20 to 35 feet. once you're talking about northern california. this is dangerous, especially when you combine that with high tide and it is dangerous. 10 to good morning. we are waking up to a microclimate weather alert across the bay area as we continue to track this second storm of the third storm series. right now seeing a number of cells pushing through the north bay, france. zooming in towards san jose and

she is ready to march. a single mother, she is bringing her boys with her. >> for me, it is great that i have two boys i can raise to be feminists. >> reporter: for allison, it is a different kind of running that is fuelling her. >> i often refer to running as a vehicle for social change. the things trump was saying was bombastic and ridiculous. particularly via twitter that i could not imagine that he would be president. >> reporter: so when word spread of the march, she laced up and decided she would run the 256 miles from her harlem neighborhood to washington. and she was not alone. joining her a group of 100 men and women making each step count by raising money for planned parenthood and doubling their set goal. >> what made an impact on me is that this really small crazy idea i think lots of women are having are actually powerful

movements. >> reporter: betty gray was one of the first leaders of the march. >> my daughter looked at me and said does trump believe in climate change yet. we have work to do. >> reporter: a majority of women voted for hillary clinton. 53% of white women voted for president trump. >> i think that was the real be re rievement. the majority of me on the outside were not aligned with humanist values. >> reporter: the message is clear. president trump is on notice. >> don't under estimate us. >> reporter: they are ready to march. >> i'm marching because there's nothing more powerful than a group of women who know what they want and know their value and are demanding it. >> i am marching because i want to represent everybody who is disenfranchised by the election.

after a case of deja vu. a large tree blocked a major portion of the road in the mountains. it stopped all traffic and left some drivers completely stranded. we have a picture of the tree that did it there, near redwood estates. told hundreds of cars were stuck well past midnight. the chp closed 17 southbound at bear creek road, and before they did we saw this man who spray painted three-plus hours on a towel and held it up warning other drivers to exit immediately. >> try and help people, not go through the brain damage i did. >> we are also told three buses full of high schoolers were also stuck there well into the night. dozens of people living in hollister forced from their homes because of major flooding. the pacheco creek is now flowing right through lover's lane. this after a levee there broke for the second time in two weeks. 21 people, dozens of farm

our system builds in a brief window for some glamour, some fashion, some fun before the real hard work kicks in. the inaugural balls were a feature for that with the first couple dancing at three inaugural balls. one of those dedicated to the men and women in the armed services. and that is a way to shift focus away from the celebrities, which worked hard for the administration to attract, and try to emphasize those who serve the country. so there was the chance for "may way," not a romantic first dance but one that certainly reflects the personality of the new president. and before he put on his tuxedo he went into the oval office with his top aides including son-in-law jared kushner who will be one of his most senior and kind of unparalleled advisers and they began working on executive orders, three of them. the most notable, instructing the agencies of the executive brarchl to scale back

on area where's they have jurisdiction over obamacare. of course the signature achievement of former president barack obama, they will need congress to really roll it back. the other two dealing with the first cabinet positions that have been filled. secretary of defense james mattis and the secretary of homeland security john kelly. they received the oath of their office from vice president mike pence. so the work has begun after the oaths taken and big speech. 16 minutes. which some said were dark but also classic donald trump with the america first message and the making america great again message that we heard so much that found its way into an inaugural address as well. >> kelly o'donnell, thank you. >> hallie jackson is four miles away at the national cathedral where president trump will be attending a prayer service later this morning. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: craig, after president trump wakes up in the white house for the first time, he will make the trip up here a little bit

north of the white house to the national cathedral which is a long time tradition for newly inaugurated presidents which dates back to george washington. this is an inter-faith service with a list of leaders. speaking and offering prayers. but like a lot of things that president trump does, this one doesn't come without at least a little bit of controversy from reports that some episcopalians here with the comments of mexicans and muslims. that said, we expect to see familiar faces from the campaign trail here inside the cathedral including pastor daryl scott from cleveland. he was somebody that was involved in the campaign as part of the national diversity council for the president when he was running for office. after his visit here, we expected he may make a trip to the cia to do some fence mending with the intelligence community. according to multiple sources. remember, as kelly talked about it there were a couple of

cabinet members confirmed last night. mike pompeo incoming cia chief was not one of them so looks like that cia visit will be postponed a little bit longer. >> newly named white house correspondent. hallie jackson. thank you. >> congratulations, hallie. in the meantime, hundreds of thousands descend on washington for the women's march on washington. it's largest of marches planned in all 50 states today. nbc's jacob rascon is at the national mall. jacob, what's happening there? >> reporter: sheinelle, thousands of people, women, men and children, gathered. many of them as you can tell wearing pink hats. after a rally with celebrity speakers, they march down independence avenue to constitution avenue. on to the elips. hundreds of other women's marches also planned around the country and world. yesterday, d.c. police arrested 217 people during protests that turned violent. a small group wearing masks in all black smashing windows and starting fires and throwing rocks and bricks. even injuring several officers.

overshadowing thousands of other peaceful demonstrations against their new president. today, d.c. police say they are preparing for up to 500,000 people in the demonstration. sheinelle. >> jacob, thank you. let's take a look at some of the other headlines this morning. a powerful line of storms sweeping through the south overnight. a possible tornado touched down in hattiesburg, mississippi, area. there are extensive reports of damage, trapped people calling for help. power is out. roads are closed there. this is a look at some of the damage. william carey university officials say dorms were hit and several people had to be taken to the hospital with minor injuries. >> there are reports that rescuers are hearing voices trapped under the avalanche in italy. four people were pulled from the wreckage of the crushed ski resort hotel today and five others including four children were saved on friday. they were buried in the snow. cold and dark since wednesday. half of the 30 people in the hotel at the time are still
