are under a microclimate weather alert- very wet golden gate bridge.at a sam/da right now on "today in the bay" we are under a micro climate weather alert. that's a very wet golden gate bridge. >> a look at the eye on the problems while you are sleeping. we aring traing the rain to your doorstep. we have rand, wind, snow, all sorts of conditions. thanks for joining us for this special two hour edition. >> we brought in kerry hall to help track the storm. we have a team of reporters in the field. we are just getting word that in the sierra, parts of interstate 80 were shut down near the california, nevada state line due to poor visibility and white out conditions. >> poor conditions outside locally as well as we take a look at video from earlier this

morning. we'll bring new video. this is an area near the lexington reservoir which is already near capacity. it's around 99% right now. the heavy rain continues to fall overnight into already saturated ground. >> these are images from overnight whipping winds along with rain made it tough for drivers to navigate roads. >> let's get you caught up on the big stories we are following. of course flooding concerns across the area. high winds which pose an erosion threat along the coastline. we are just learning that there are more than 7,000 power outages around pacifica. >> we have team coverage on the third storm to hit the bay area over the past week. kerry hall is tracking what's happening now. it is wet and windy. we were just talking about the commute in. dangerous out there. >> it is really dangerous. you're just sitting there and you can feel the car rocking. that's what sam and i talked about this morning.

as we look at the radar the heaviest rain is moving through the tri valley extending into the south bay where you see bright reds and yellows. as you look at san francisco we see breaks in the rain. pacifica down to san mateo, spotty, lighter showers. it gets more intense down to san jose where we see the reds and yellows again showing the most intense rain. right now rainfall rates at .3 of an inch of rain per hour. we have seen more intense rain than this. as you go through parts of the santa cruz mountains toward scotts valley. rainfall rates at an inch per hour. it is pouring, creating low visibility also for parts of morgan hill, extending down 101 to gilroy and the area of concern near hollister. as we head up the tri valley, the heaviest rain extending toward livermore where we see more breaks in lafayette and

oakland now with lighter showers. also for valeo, ready to take a break from the rain. we see spotty activity for the north bay. we are going to see a lot more of this as we open up the picture. you see a cluster of clouds well to the west of us. this is when we could have the chance of severe weather later on today with some more pockets of heavy rain, thunder and lightning. so the break will last a few more hours. still showers and thunderstorms as we go through late morning and early afternoon. you see the next round of heavy rain around 2:00 this afternoon. this is when once again we have the potential of severe weather. that means small hail, damaging winds, thunder and lightning. and more flooding threats as we go through the day. a lot of concerns here with a couple of more rounds of heavy rain moving through the bay area. >> you mentioned the fact that

the afternoon looks like a greater threat now. we know the napa and russian rivers aren't at flood stage now. is that possible for this afternoon? >> it will be. they will be close to the monitor stages. it's all depending on how much rain we get with heavier thunderstorms. training through the areas. but then as we go through the hour by hour outlook even at 3:00 or 4:00 there is still heavy rain in and around the bay area before we see the activity tapering off later on tonight. when you talk about hours upon hours of heavy rain, yes, all of the river levels will have to be closely monitored. >> and the ground so saturated. thank you very much. we continue our coverage with "today in the bay's" chuck copola in downtown san jose. how is the water level looking now?

>> reporter: good morning. we are here along the guadeloupe river in south san jose. behind me the river is churning along at a brisk clip. it is lower than when we checked here a couple of weekends ago during the same flood conditions. presently the river is at six and a half feet expected to go to eight and a half -- 10:00 a.m. is the peak hour we expect in the national weather service also expecting the weather level to peak. well below the monitoring stage of ten feet and far below 13 feet flood stage. there is a large berm. it's dark this morning. but there is a large berm between the creek and condos on the other side. we can report that pg & e says there are some 7700 people without power along the peninsula. mostly in pacifica. in the east bay power is out to 4500 customers, mostly in the hayward area. in san jose, approximately 1600

people are without power. pg and ex says there are widespread power outages. some 500 people at the ready at the beginning of the series of storms. this is the third in the series of three. it is calling in people. it has 36 crews right now on mutual stand-by ready to go. we don't know if pg & e has called them in. for flooding we checked and the most flooding we have seen so far south of the north bay part of the bay area which is supposed to take a hard hit in this storm is around belmont creek in belmont. it is nearing flood stage. at el camino real it has not peaked. >> as we have mentioned the

wind's really an issue. 7700 people on the peninsula without power. 1600 in san jose and the flooding will be an issue. >> flooding all over. we'll talk about hollister in a minute. we have been upgraded from a flood watch to a flood warning. >> we are keeping an eye on river levels. as he mentioned we are expected to get near the monitoring stage through the day. a look at the weather graphics as we see levels going up. around 10:00 this morning we expect it to crest just below monitor stage. russian river will be above monitor stage based on current rainfall. peaking at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. for today in napa river, downtown napa, 21.9. peaking and thenal if aing at 1:00 today. we have talked about the reservoirs and how high they

are. uvas at 103%. the coyote about the same. lexington, 99. vasona 82. yes, you were talking about the flood warning around sonoma. that's where people living near the area need to seek higher ground. the water level continues to rise and also for sonoma county. you see it around santa rosa down to peta lu mama. the levels getting high. flood warnings there. >> thank you so much. we'll check back with you throughout the morning. with the new storm moving in, more concern in hollister. 21 people rescued after a levee gave out for the second time in two weeks. flooding. these parts of the county again. officials called for mandatory evacuations. crews rescued people by vote. water is too deep to drive-thru.

welcome back. we are in a micro climate weather alert this morning at 6:12 on your sunday. a live look outside at the bay bridge toll plaza. be careful on the road. intermittent rain but a lot of ponding out there on the roadways. plenty of wind as well. please, exercise caution this morning. we'll keep you updated on how conditions are changing. it's not just the bay area being hit by intense rain in spots a flash flood swept through a popular campground on the central coast after a night of heavy rain. that's the scene this weekend at el captain resort and campground west of santa barbara. there is debris everywhere. you see cars stuck, windows broken there. crews say five cabins and 15

cars were picked up by an overflowing river and swept toward the beach. thankfully no injuries were reported. >> those dangerous conditions along the coast have already proven deadly this weekend. two people are missing and presumed dead after falling off the rocks into the water at pebble beach. the u.s. coast guard rescued one other person who fell in the water. in pacifica, bystanders pulled a paraglider from the ocean. he crashed before 11:00 yesterday morning. emergency responders couldn't resuscitate him. the coroner's office is now investigating that accident. >> concerns about flooding this weekend in san francisco. city crews once again put up the flood barriers along 17th and fullsom because of the rain. the 400 foot barriers are to deal with recurring flooding in the area. >> much more still to come on "today in the bay." up next, another look at the doppler radar live as rain continues to fall in the area. we are seeing pockets of yellow

(adlib) /3shot let's check in with kari hall - with a look at your weekend very slick conditions out there as the rain continues to fall on the bay area. we are going to get a break from the showers but if you are headed out today make sure you leave extra time and bring an umbrella. it's going to be wet most of the day. >> we see the camera there shaking a little bit. the wind was howling overnight with gusts up to 60 miles per hour. >> absolutely. we were talking earlier about last night when the rein started

howling the whole house was shaking. we are all looking like what's going on. for a lot of people this is scary, especially closer to the coastline when the winds pick up that strong and we have the potential of down trees and power outages. we are looking at all of this, covering it from all angles. a live look outside at oakland. we see it's nice and clear as far as visibility there. some of the heaviest rain has cleared oakland. it's very wet with standing water. it is still raining in san jose. it will still be soggy as we get a live look outside in san francisco. you can see that it is a fairly clear there as well. some of the heaviest rain moving to the west and east. we'll look at the communities. once again the heavy rain was there. just about an hour ago.

now we are getting light mist and drizzle. as we head down the me nins will you may have power outages in spots. at least it's not raining. still breezy. even after the rain clears we have had some breezy winds at times really gusty. palo alto, a steady downpour. a few minutes and the rain will take a break for a while. there is still steady rain. some of the heaviest rain shifting out of boulder creek. clearing the summit and moving to the east. bright reds and yellows will last quite a while. over toward sunol, heavy rain but less intense within the next

30 minutes and then spotty light showers for much of the east bay toward san ramone. you will see thissing a tift in fair field starting to lighten up. for the north bay getting a chance to breathe and take a break as we continue to clean up. a lot of areas still watching the creeks and rivers rising now. even though we don't have the heavy yes, sir rain falling at this point. we have the wall where you see the next wave of clouds moving in. this is with the center of low pressure. the center of the storm system that will be rotating through the bay area later today, bringing in much more energy meaning thunder, lightning and small hail. it tosses the storms up and down. we have some of those hail pellets we have seen recently. that's the rain drops being tossed up and down in the clouds. it freezes and falls down to the

ground. if you are following me on facebook and twitter send me what the weather looks like where you live. i can share with everyone else and we can continue to track the weather together. as we look at the wind speeds we talked about the winds really rocking earlier this morning. we are not seeing as much of the intense wind gusts. at this point 20 to 30 miles per hour. we still have the wind advisory for the valleys and the wind sheltered areas. high wind warning continues until 10:00 this morning. this is for the coast and the hills. all of the areas shaded in purple, that's where the highest wind gusts will be where we may see them still topping 16 miles per hour for the next three and a half hours before this activity starts to calm down. we could still see gusty winds with storm cells that move in later this afternoon. we see the winds relaxing at 1:00 this afternoon. coming in from the southwest and picking up at 15 to 20 miles per

hour later today. we are seeing the worst of the wind speeds behind us. once again we may still have gusty winds with some of the cells that move in later today. at 8:00 this morning much of the north bay is still dry. we should get a longer break later on this morning. the next storm system moves in this afternoon at 2:00 to 3:00. even at 4:00 we have some heavy rain falling and then all of the activity starting to taper off and becoming more scattered later tonight at 8:00, 9:00 or 10:00 tonight. still at any point we could have passing rain moving through. even early tomorrow morning we could still see the rain throughout the afternoon. it just doesn't want to leave us until late tuesday. we'll finally get clearing

around the bay area. additional totals from an inch and a quarter to two inches of rain for much of the bay area. as far as snow in the sierra, another possibly two to maybe three feet of snow. when we have seen total this is season reaching 190% of average for the southern sierra, the central sierra, 168% and the northern sierra, 143% of average. this has been an epic season. if you wonder what the temperatures are like as you head out now it is in the upper 40s to low 50s. as we go through the day, looking at the highs reaching into the mid 50s over the next several days expect the highs to stay in the 50s and finally getting a chance to breathe and dry out as we head through the middle of the week. i will have another quick look at the forecast coming up in eight minutes. >> kari, thank you. >> all of the conditions, one thing she mentioned is the heavy waves rocking the coastlines.

in office. this was the scene in washington, d.c. hundreds of thousands of demonstrators showed up. organizers planned to lead a formal march toward the white house but so many people were there they couldn't lead the procession. more than half a million people filled the national mall grounds holding signs and chanting. several celebrities and leaders addressed the crowd. raj was there and caught up with bay area resident who is made the trip to the nation's capital. >> i am so happy. everybody you talk to is happy to be here because we are united with a need to hear a woman's voice. >> it's overwhelming. after what we saw yesterday and then to see this today. yeah. it's encouraging and hopeful. it's beautiful. >> it is so nice to find out that everybody is on the same page. it's just peace. it's just respect. it's just acceptance.

it's just a voice. >> planned parenthood president cecile richards addressed trump's platform to cut off funding for planned parenthood calling the march a time to link arms were women's rights. >> these aerial shots are just unbelievable. one of the largest women's marches in the area took place yesterday in san francisco. you see some of the signs and supporters out there on market street. organizers estimate more than 100,000 people came together to march. even despite the rain pouring at points. our chopper captured massive crowds on market headed for justin herman plaza. city hall was lit up in pink and so was the civic auditorium. the mayor said the lights are in solidarity with protecting women's rights. folks said they won't stand by and lose the rights so many people fought to maintain. >> i feel half of america is trying to silence the other

half. i'm worried about everything -- the stock market, certainly women's safety. >> women's rights. >> free melania! >> we mentioned the size of the crowd. 100,000 plus. so far, no reports of any arrests. as for oakland, police there estimate 100,000 people poured into the streets to demonstrate. marchers stretching nearly the length of the two-mile rate from bart station to franco plaza. it was similar in the south bay. 25,000 people marched in downtown san jose. city leaders say it is the largest demonstration in san jo jose's history. both events in oakland and san jose were peaceful. smaller cities like santa rosa and redwood city joining in the national day of action. participants from coast to coast made it clear women's rights are human rights. >> new, the white house is responding to yesterday's women's marches for the first

time. the white house released this statement this morning that reads, quote, it is a shame the march for life which estimates the same number of marchers in d.c. and will be happening next friday will not get anywhere near the same amount of coverage that this march got. those pro life members were not welcome at the women's march. the statement says, madonna was one of the celebrities headlining the march was quoted saying, yes, i have thought a lot about blowing up the white house. comments like these are absolutely unaccept abdominal. had they been said about president obama, the main stream media would be in an uproar. the trump administration welcomes a robust discussion regarding the critical issues facing america's women and families. donald trump plans to once again meet with mexico's president enrique pena nieto. trump's press secretary confirmed the meeting for january 31. high on the agenda, discussions about trade, immigration and security. this new meeting follows a phone

south bay. we will continue to see this moving off to the east. in fremont you get ready to take a break from the rain. still coming down fairly at a good clip we head up toward lafayette, san ramon and you are seeing some of the steady rain pouring that will last a little while longer while the north bay sees more breaks in the rain. we'll continue to see this activity rolling through as we go through the day. the next round of rain will be here early afternoon. this poses a threat of more flooding, the potential of some thunder, lightning, small hail

and also more power outages and down trees. we'll continue to track that as we go through the morning and also through the the day. >> we have been talking about the weather and the problems it is causing, not just flooding but power outages. thousands waking up without power this morning. crews are working on that. as far as the flooding goes and the ground being saturated what's the third storm in a week do to folks that are already trying to recover from what we saw. >> it doesn't give you much time. as you wake up, you are looking at the nearby creek or river. you see the water levels coming up. be prepared to move to higher ground. make sure you are making phone calls to friends, family somewhere nearby where you can go just in case the water levels get high. it's an a historic winter as far as rain and snow. >> you mentioned the north bay is breathing a little bit now,

getting a break before later this afternoon. the south bay getting a lot of activity. let's continue our coverage now. chuck coppola is live in san jose. you have been out there all morning long. tell us what the river levels are looking like now. >> reporter: the river is at sex and a half feet. it should crest at eight feet six inches around 10:00. a lot of people have come out in the past few weeks when the rains have come down hard like they are now. we have been checking the river level to be sure it stays within its banks. pictures were taken last night of highway nine and flooding in the saratoga border area. these pictures are near austin way and highway nine. drivers are going through eight to nine. ins of standing water and risking it. not a smart thing to do.

this stuff. the waves are aggressive. we have a good 30 minutes or so. they have been aggressive all morning. this is just the beginning of it. it will be more throughout the day. we are just on the edge here along the coast. you can see how the waves are coming up and smacking you in the face. this is behind me along the ocean here. that's a major concern. folks in this area dealing with power outages as well. these waves nothing new. yesterday we had video of waves just as aggressive as this. gives you an idea what it will be like coming up when daylight happens in the next hour or so. how aggressive and how intense they will be. so best advice is to stay away from the ocean after this live shot. i will follow the advice back here live along the rail where i'm holding on. the waves continue to crash up.

good sunday morning. our micro climate weather alert continue this is morning with the third storm system moving through. this will be coming in waves, heavy rain. as we look outside at oakland it is starting to dry out just a bit. we had heavy rain this morning. also a break in the south bay. you can tell the streets are wet as a few drivers make their way out there on the roadways.

in san francisco, still soggy as we have seen the heaviest rain moving through about two hours ago for the spot. it's still light spotty showers moving through. we were seeing the shift of the heaviest rain now moving to the east of the bay area and also farther off toward the south. let's get a close look at where we have seen the heaviest rain moving in in parts of the peninsula. you are seeing a steady downpour in palo alto. steady rain in san jose. we have had pockets of heavy rain. now we are seeing more shades of green on the map. not the reds and yellows showing the more intense rain. for the santa cruz mountains we are seeing some of the bright greens there. it shifts over to the morgan hill, gilroy area where it's still really coming down. i just retweeted a viewer who has had three-quarters of an inch of rain. thank you for that information.

you can send us what the weather looks like where you live. we are seeing bright greens there showing a steady downpour. in lafayette we are tracking the light rain that will be letting up here within the next few minutes. we'll also see breaks in the rain and the north bay. we could still see showers moving through. we have the flash flood warning for the sonoma area. this is the creek where the residents need to seek higher ground. that was issued this morning. it continues for another 50 minutes or so. we have this flood warning that will be in effect until later today for parts of sonoma county. as we go into the rest of the day we'll watch the next wave of storms moving in. it's gotten attention from the storm production center in norman oklahoma. they are watching for the potential of high wind and also

small hail and thunder and lightning in this. they might be issuing watches and warnings for the bay area later today. i mentioned the tweet earlier today. you can follow me and find out more information as we continue to follow the storms. send me your weather reports if you can do so safely. we are keeping an eye on the river levels. guadeloupe river. expecting the water levels to reach near the monitor stage at 10:00 this morning. if you are watching nearby that river, you're seeing the water levels cresting. expect it to fall after that point based on the current rainfall estimates. looking at the russian river this is above the monitor stage tomorrow morning at 5:00. we'll keep an eye on this. also the napa river downtown. expect it to reach just below that stage at 1:00 this afternoon.

overflowing the banks, at 99%. we know that last time once the lexington reservoir over top of the banks we can see the flooding around the creek. just something we'll continue to watch as we may see them rising even more with rounds of heavy rain. as far as winds, sam and i were talking earlier about the car just shaking with the strong wind gusts out there. heard the windows and the rain on the windows and the heavy rain along with the winds. really picking up last night. we have seen gusts at 50 to 60 miles per hour. and the wind warnings continue for the hills and the inland areas.

as far as what the computer models are showing for wind speeds, showing sustained winds calming down. there might be higher gusts. even into this afternoon with the next round of heavy rain moving in by 4:00. 5:00, still some isolated spots of strong wind gusts, but sustained winds around 10 to 15 miles per hour. rainfall as we go into the rest of the day. once again there will be a break. this is when we could start to see some of the water levels coming back down. then turn your attention to early afternoon at 2:30. we have another round of very heavy rain rolling in from west to east, moving across the bay area and a couple of hours of very heavy rain and the potential of the severe weather threat as the storm system continues to move to the east, catching more of a break later on tonight. we may see an additional inch and a quarter to two inches of rain across the bay area.

that will add on to the flooding threat we have. as far as wind, we'll finally get a break from all of this on the afternoon of tuesday. that's when the last round of rain will be moving out and sunshine through the rest of the forecast with the temperatures gradually getting a little bit milder out there. we are definitely looking forward to the break. this has really been a lot of intense rain and snow for the sierra just this month. we have seen record amounts of rain and snow. >> a day people are headed out to services. they want to get errands done. what's the best way to get it done safely? >> by 1:00 or 2:00 you have to come back to the television and the nbc bay area app and make sure you are tracking the next wave of storms that looks to be pretty strong later today. >> updates on a lot of situations including what
