makes. on friday, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in washington, d.c. to witness the inauguration of president donald trump. yesterday, hundreds of thousands of people gathered there to express contempt for the new president and promote their own goals. larry guersten joins us. how do we explain these events? >> if you didn't know how divided american society was before you know it now. friday this president in the inaugural speech printed to a dark picture of america that focus on inner city crimes ending with the demand that the american carnage stops here and now. yesterday as many or more people gathered for what was called the women's march to claim that the trump administration and congress were on the verge of taking america in the wrong
7:48 am
direction. comparisons of the turn outs of the days are hard to find. but four times as many chartered buses and 50% more metra riders came saturday than friday. the contrast was unreal out of the two events we saw two americas. >> some conflicting reports following both events about the numbers and the data showing what you mentioned in terms of ridership, a higher number yesterday. you didn't have to read what people were holding on the signs to see the differences in the crowd. we are talking about more racial diversity of the crowd yesterday and more women in the march yesterday, of course. can you summarize concerns for the groups? >> no doubt about it. a summary will leave some of the issues out. the most consistent messages focused on the following claims that president trump and congress would harm women and all americans by promoting policies harmful to women's reproductive rights. policies that would set back
7:49 am
minority voting rights. policies that would discriminate against immigrants. the marchers believe all of the human rights issues are now jeopardized by the new trump administration. >> so much of this was washington centric. we saw the incredible video out of our nation's capital. we are also seeing a lot of activity across the nation. particularly right here in the bay area. sam was actually out in the city yesterday talking about some of the children taking part in the demonstrations. >> one step at a time. that's what made this event so unique. although washington was ground zero as we said. women, men. their children, grandparents, all participated throughout the country. seattle, 50,000, los angeles, 750,000. these are only some of the largest cities. >> we saw some of the video from here in the bay area. you have the numbers in for this morning as well.
7:50 am
>> the three major cities. look at san francisco, oakland and san jose. those cities attracted more than 200,000 marchers. smaller bay area cities had events as well. there are always ironies in san francisco. another event, the west coast walk for life, a pro life event also drew 50,000 people for their own march. a little bit of everything in the city that day. that's for sure. clearly political activism was everywhere this weekend. >> some of the city seeing the biggest demonstrations in the history. that was the case in san jose. city leaders said it was the biggest demonstration the say citi has had. your take away from the mass gatherings. apparently the last time we saw a day of action of such enormity was after president nixon's inauguration. >> at that time the marches were relatively small. less than 100,000.
7:51 am
we are talking about different times. much more involved people. but we still leave with questions. for example where were the protesters before the november presidential election. how many of those folks who marched yesterday didn't bother to vote? what indications do we have that these efforts will continue next week, next month, next year. you know, america is famous for people expressing indignation over issues sh abortion rights, police brutality, voting discrimination, you name it. usually the intensity wanes within days of a march. the question is if yesterday's claims will be a movement for the future and the new trump presidency think it will be a momentary outburst. we'll just have to wait and see. time will tell. >> larry, as always, thank you. president trump tweeted already about the march. this time fairly magnanimous
7:52 am
saying this is what the nation's democracy is about. he may not always agree with the message but believes in the right to express it. >> okay. >> larry, thank you. >> we'll see about his opinions toward free speech in media as well as we saw from the first prochb press conference. we are back to the top story. the third of three powerful storms has made its way through the bay area. this is an ongoing process now. we have seen strong winds and heavy rain overnight as we take a live look at the radar. the biggest pockets of rain south now beyond san jose into santa cruz and gilroy. a serious situation in san benito county and hollister. we are keeping track of that. >> yes. kari hall has been working hard. a special two-hour edition giving us a look at the forecast and what's ahead. >> we have a lot ahead through the day. even though a lot of areas as you wake up and look out the window it's really not raining that hard now. we had such heavy rain this
7:53 am
