we have the threat of a few showers in the north bay and in the san francisco area. here it is. we are expecting to clear out by the midafternoon making way for what is expected to be a much dryer weather pattern ahead. by wednesday, we'll be clearing and cool but pushing ahead towards thursday. we are expecting a very weak system off the coast to bring the potential for more rain. i'll have a closer look what spec expect. mike. >> looking at dryer roads because of vianey's forecast. but roadway conditions are not crowded. the commute late for this friday. part of the reason is the a lot pass. livermore, dublin moving much more freely. you cannot connect from highway 37 to 101. mild towards the bay bridge. of here, this is a problem for

oakland continuing from yesterday as well. the sinkhole repair. the sinkhole named steve. the other pickup truck remains giving us that restriction. breaking news out of the south bay where a pedestrian was hit by a car early this morning driven by an uber driver in san jose. >> kris sanchez has been gathering. what's the latest, kris? >> reporter: we can tell you the man who was hit not? that crosswalk is now in critical condition in the hospital. he was transported by plans right away. the driver who was driving for uber, on his way to pick up a fare said he didn't see the man in the dark stretch of roadway. ez the man behind the wheel is

an aoub driver heading to pick up a passenger at the time and neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be factors in the crash. a victim was crossing out of the crosswalk, a length of the football field away. if he had crossed there it could have been a very different story. >> you can tell it is pretty dark where the pedestrian was crossing. it was certainly lit up a little bit better. the driver may have been able to see him. >> the westbound lanes will remain closed likely through the morning commute. kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> kris, thank you so much. also happening today, crews will be back out along niles canyon road trying to recover a car they believe plunged into the alameda creek over the weekend. >> an 18-year-old woman is still missing after she was involved in the crash and veered into the

creek on saturday. bob redell will explain how today's seven efforts could impact drivers. >> first responders will be shutting down the road to retrieve this woman answer sedan that plunged early saturday morning. finding the car has been difficult because of the high water flow. we believe the creek has lowered a bit which means drivers may be able to retrieve later this afternoon. upon review the sheriff's office believes that is the 18-year-old woman's silver honda accord. deputy thes are hopeful she had her seat belt crashed into the creek. that would mean she is most

likely still in the seat and a rove of her body possible. 30 members were out yesterday to assist in the seven. it was a family member who spotted the unusual parting in the water which turned out to be her car. >> their eyes, their attention is so focused on finding their loved one that it was a miracle they were able to see that anomaly in the water and find it. >> the 18-year-old has recently graduated high school, was attending college, studying to become a social worker. they will shut down niles canyon at 10:00 after the morning commute in an attempt to retrieve this young woman's car. to reiterate we believe the level of the water has dropped a little bit since we were out here 24 hours ago.

bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you very much, bob. 6:05. authorities are awaiting autopsy reports to help solve the mysterious death of two people in an apartment complex. the bodies of a man and woman both in their 30s were found in an apartment unit on ashby and telegraph. two cats were found dead. there were no obvious signs of death. radiation and carbon monoxide tests both came back negative. >> it is scary. i don't know what happened to them. i don't know if that's natural or -- >> as a precaution, police for a time evacuated other tenants. an autopsy will be made known in the next 48 hours. growing fears along our coastline. we take a live look at pacifica where we have seen dangerous waves the last self days. it continues to cause more

lights turned on early. putting your concentration to the test. 6:13 on a tuesday. the deadly avalanche that buried a hotel in italy. emergency crews out there looking for survivors. rescuers found three puppies alive underneath all of that debris. the puppies survived six days under piles of snow giving crews hope some of the 17 people still the missing could be alive. they hope people may have found air pockets and the snow could protect people from frigid temperatures. so far nine people have been rescued alive. in the meantime the death toll stands at 12. firefighters found five more bodies overnight. the first funeral will be held today. an elderly woman recovering

after being held down in her own home. the woman answered her door. two robbers pushed their way into the home fpt the male robber punched the elderly woman in the face. they used her cane to hold her down and then threatened her with a knife. after that happened, the female robber ransacked the house. police have not released a description of the suspects. well, today is the day san francisco's police chief first full day in office. the new chief, william scott, sworn in yesterday amid protests. they tried to disrupt that ceremony. one began shouting on the balcony as he tried to give his speech. a couple contentious issues, which the chief spoke about. >> we have to be thoughtful where we are consistent with the release of body cams.

a quick check of the doppler radar. this may be one of the last day you see the green on the map. this green is expected. the cell is expected to bring you a few straggling showers. south pay should be in the clear for the remainderer of the day. san francisco and the north bay, a quick check of the timeline. fast forward through wednesday. and the showers have completely cleared from the bay area. now we fast forward through thursday. hold off washing the vehicle. high clouds at times. we are seeing a very weak system that could bring more showers to areas in san francisco and the north bay. as we look ahead towards friday. by thursday night, into friday, we should be starting officially our drying trend across the bay area. we have this high pressure that will be dominated. friday, early morning, we can expect patchy frost.

all right. we're through the worst of our storms here. a developing story across the country. coastal cities in the northeast are being slammed by an intense nor'easter bringing high winds, rain, and flooding. the storm surge is inundating streets in new york city bringing several inches of water. large waves and rough surf battering the jersey shore as well. wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. it is is expected to bring more winds is and rain or ice and snow through the north today.

have learned the last 90 minutes that a pedestrian was hit by an uber drove at center and tully road. >> kris sanchez has been at the scene gathering information. so this investigation will be going on part of the morning, kris? reporter: right. this is a very serious crash. the pedestrian has very serious injuries at this point. we can tell you that. the uber driver who was behind the wheel at the time of the crash did remain at the scene. san jose police say he just did not see this man crossing actually road. it is a bit of a dark stretch as you get away from the intersection. the man, the uber driver who was headed to pick up a passenger does not appear to have been using alcohol nor drugs at the time of the crash. he did remain at the scene. the victim was crossing out of the crosswalk. that crosswalk is about the length of a football field away. if he had crossed there, the lieutenant says the story could

have been very different. >> yeah. you could tell it is pretty dark where he is crossing. had he crossed at the proper spot at the crosswalk, it certainly lit up a little bit better. the driver may have been able to see him. >> this pedestrian was hit on actually road in the westbound lanes here. the other side, that's where the investigation continues. we have seen officers out there taking measurements and touch. that is going to tomorrow at least a few more hours. that will disrupt the entire morning commute. kris sanchez, today in the bay. more breaking news right now just into our newsroom. you are looking at a live aerial of a helicopter that crashed in central italy and specifically this was a rescue helicopter. we're told the the chopper went down as it was trying to rescue skiers there. you see them lower down on the

mountain. this is central italy not far away from where a deadly avalanche buried a hotel recently. this is a country that has been reeling in recent weeks. we will continue to monitor the situation and bring updates as we get them into the newsroom. a developing story out of hayward. deputies investigating the shooting of a 16-year-old boy. he was shot at 7:00 in an unincorporated part of hayward, just down the street from city hall, on the coverager of princeton and smalley a. witnesses reported hearing gunshots. now they are looking to see if it was a drive-by shooting. so far no suspects are in custody. crews are still work to go fill up a sinkhole that opened up in oakland. its name is steve. it opened just north of broadway terrace. today in the bay pete suratos is live to explain how it could
