anti-trump protests went late into the night in los angeles as thousands around the nation demonstrated against the new administration's controversial new immigration bans. breaking news overnight. six killed, eight wounded, at a shooting in a canadian mosque. patrols around mosques in the the u.s. are stepped up. i am the daughter of an immigrant. my father fled religious persecution in nazi-occupied france. i am horrified by his blemishes.

"early today" starts right now. good to be with you, i'm frances rivera. breaking news, an attack in canada. at least six people were killed and eight injured in a late-evening shooting at a quebec city mosque during evening prayers. authorities report two suspects were arrested in connection with the attack. prime minister justin trudeau called the attack "an act of terrorism on muslims." trudeau tweeting, canadians mourn victims of the cowardly attack in a mosque of quebec. my thoughts are with the victims and their families." police say there is nothing to suggest there are any other suspects. the victims of the shooting have yet to be publicly identified.

now to new worldwide fallout this morning after president donald trump closed the nation's borders to ref yes around the world. many were being held at airports across the country and massive opposition demonstrations erupted. >> donald trump go away! donald trump go away! hey, hey, ho, ho, donald trump has got to go! >> say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here! >> say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here! >> protesters took to the streets for a second straight day, despite one new york judge's ruling that all those who have been granted permission to be in the u.s. be let out, the president's white house counselor dismissed that judge's decision. >> the judge in brooklyn, the obama appointee, stay of order doesn't affect the executive order at all. because the executive order is meant to be prospective. it's preventing, not detaining. and i think in terms of the upside being greater protection

of our borders, of our people, it's a small price to pay. >> this morning we're learning there may be another lawsuit aimed at the president's order. nbc's edward lawrence is in washington. what can you tell us? >> reporter: we know the aclu won injunction against the executive order from deporting those who have already been granted access to the united states. now we understand that in virginia, a new federal lawsuit will be filed by an arab-american group. it challenges the entire executive order being filed saying it discriminates against a religion. donald trump passed or signed this executive order on friday. banning for 90 days people from seven specific countries from

coming into the united states. all of those countries are majority muslim. both house and senate democrats say this is unamerican. they're planning a protest later on today on the steps of the supreme court. by this morning the white house has actually walked back some of this saying folks who have a green card are not effected by this executive order. the swift reaction this morning comes after mr. trump's rule ordered families fleeing several countries in the middle east to be indefinitely blocked from entering the united states, temporarily suspending immigration from several predominantly muslim countries. however, the president refused calling it an outright ban and says despite reports it's working just fine. >> is it a muslim ban? >> it's not a muslim ban. we're totally prepared to work it out very nicely. you see it at the airports, you see it all over, it's working out nicely. >> he followed up with this statement, this is not a muslim ban as the media is falsely reporting. this is not about religion, this

is about terror and keeping our country safe." and while an administration official says the president's travel ban has been a "massive success story," members of congress have come out strongly against the move with several democratic lawmakers taking part in this weekend's protests. >> this executive order -- was mean-spirited and unamerican. >> we have to fight, we have to stand strong, we have to say no, and we must not give up, we must not give in, and we must never forget! >> we will not turn away children! >> we will not turn away children! >> we will not turn away families! >> we will not turn away families! >> several republican lawmakers have hit back, including senators tim scott and marco rubio. also lindsey graham and john mccain. on twitter the president bashed

graham and mccain posting, they are sadly weak on immigration, the two senators should focus their energies on isis, illegal immigration, and order security instead of always looking to start world war iii. trump's action ordered christians and other religious minorities to be granted priority over muslims. here's what he said with regard to persecuted christians -- >> they've been horribly treated. if you were a christian in syria it was impossible, at least very, very tough, to get into the united states. if you were a muslim, you could come in. and i thought it was very, very unfair. so we are going to help them. >> however, according to the pew research center, almost as many christian refugees were admitted as muslim refugees in 2013. many world leaders have reached out to refugees, including canada's justin trudeau, tweeting, canadians will welcome you regardless of your faith. #welcometocanada. his country offers permits for

those who have been stranded due to the new law. the first minister of scotland echoing the sentiments tweeting, welcome to scotland. the refugee order wasn't the only backlash the president faced. mr. trump signed an order restructuring his national security council, giving former breitbart chief and white house senior strategist steve bannon a seat on the principal's committee of the nfc. he downgraded the role of the chairman of joint chiefs and director of national intelligence, a move susan rice called "stone-cold crazy," questioning the restructuring in several online posts, senator john mccain also voicing his strong concerns. >> the appointment of mr. bannon is something which is a radical departure from any national security council in history. >> and on the diplomatic front the president also engaged in talks with many world leaders for the very first time. speaking to russian president vladimir putin, the white house said the hour-long conversation did not include any discussion of sanctions.

president trump could announce his nominee for the supreme court as early as today. at the top of his list three federal appeals court judges. vice president mike pence is scheduled to meet with jordan's king at the naval observatory. jordan is not one of the countries affected by donald trump's executive order on immigration. the king turns 55 today. and maine's new voter approved marijuana law goes into effect today. the law makes it legal for adults 21 and older to possess weed and adults can grow up to six flowering plants and 12 nonflowering plants. landon dowdy is trying to keep track of it all and tell us what we can expect during the opening bell. >> you can expect me very busy.

wall street could begin tht red following the week that saw the dow above 20,000 for the first time. both snapping a two-week losing streak. the focus this week earnings from the likes of apple and facebook plus the monthly jobs report on friday. meanwhile, the federal reserve begins a two-day policy meeting tomorrow, the first since president trump took office. last month the fed raised interest rates by a quarter point as the first move in a year. officials have signaled as many as three more hikes this year as the economy improves but no move is expected this week. delta airlines is experiencing more delays and cancellations today following a computer system outage. the airline is canceling about 80 flights today. delta says the essential i.t. system failed and took until midnight eastern time to restore

we're almost into february. here is our february outlook. it shows a pretty near average condition across the country temperaturewise. does look warmer along california and southern half of the country. as far as precipitation we just got done with a very wet period. looks to be drier than normal conditions in the southwest and california with wetter in the northern plains. february is our last real winter month and doesn't look like we have much huge storms in the west. >> a lot of people are bummed about that. this just in. president trump's first tweet on airport delays. 109 people out of 325,000 were
