"protests on the cal campus" -- turn vlent. smoke bbs, fires, and vandasm all brk out. protests on the cal can campus turned violent. smoke bombs and vandalism break out. cal leaders express their dismay. and the president also has things to say about the violence on campus last night. early this morning he tweeted out a threat to cal that could influence the school's bottom line. and the rain is triggering a microclimate weather alert. today in the bay starts right now. very good thursday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i had to think about it for a second. really. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. there is a lot going on this

we had the easy light drive at 431. slowing around atherton avenue. i want to let you know mass transit line is an option for you. last night there was closures. they have reopened. quite busy over there. back to you guys. breaking news. chaos on the cal campus. protests over a controversial speaker turned violent. >> within the last hour, president trump tweeted a response to the demonstration saying, "if u.c. berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a view, no federal funds." details on some of the cleanup efforts that are under way at this hour we understand, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and sam. we have reached out to the university for their response to

president trump's tweets that was put out overnight. there is cleanup that needs to be done. this is outside the student union. it bore the most brunt of the damage. you can see the boards over the windows that were broken. numerous windows were broken. uc berkeley police do not believe students were responsible for this. they blame a crowd of people who came off campus in their belief to cause problems. it started out peacefully with 1300 to 1400 people against milo's plan. but after 6:00, police say 150 men and women dressed in black with bandanas started throwing rocks, fireworks, molotov cocktails at officers. they tore apart the barricades. they broke windows. they started a bonfire prompting the to lockdown the campus a car

drew through a crowd of protesters with one person stuck on the hood of that car for quite a dance. fights also broke out in the clouds. some individuals had to be rescued by police. remarkably no one was hurt badly. just a handful of minor injuries. i would say we were peaceful is and then they assault me. this amount of destruction. they're ruining our campus. i don't think they're students here. >> hate speech denigrates people, marginalizes people. >> we saw something we have never seen on this campus before, at least not the time i have been here. that was a group that came in uniform, covered in black, utilized paramilitary tactics in a clearly designed and well thought out plan to disrupt the events. >> reporter: the crowd eventually moved downtown where

he said in the same space where the free speech movement was born, last night had to be canceled. viewers sent us a lot of images from the protests. some of of our best images and video comes from you. tag us on twitter, instagram or post to our facebook page. let's get to breaking news right now. new video out of the north bay where authorities are investigating a hit and run that killed a pedestrian on highway 101. chp says it was a truck driver who noticed a man's body lying in a southbound lane in novato. the accident happened at 1:00. the driver did not stay at the scene. hence, why it is a hit and run. they believe a smaller gray car struck a man and probably suffered front-end damage. one lane is closed but should be reopening soon. the rain is back on our radar. lots of green out there. it's going to cause a mess for

folks in the morning commute. >> out live to the golden gate bridge to see the wet roadways. everywhere from the north to the south bay already seeing the slick roads. not a lot of traffic right now. today in the bay kris sanchez live on the newark side now of the dumbarton bridge with how things are shaping up so far. you don't have your hood on just yet, kris. >> reporter: not yet. i know that is our official weather gauge. it seems like the wind is really a factor. we have only seen sprinkles between san jose where our day started and newark where we are right now. this is the toll plaza for the dumbarton bridge. as folks drive over between newark and palo alto, they will likely feel some of the breeziness, especially the guy in the bud light truck. that is a high profile vehicle. he is likely to feel a little bit of breeze over the top of his truck and moving things along. hopefully they will remember to use both hands on the wheel

this is exclusive to nbc bay area. we're the only ones who have this. we can move it around the bay area to give us the best view of what's happening as a storm system approaches as it is standing now, much of the rain now in the bay area for the north bay, some pockets of heavy rain. this is something that other radars may be missing out on showing where the heaviest rain is now. also, as we two through santa rosa, a steady downpour. it is still raining with much of this moving off to the east very slowly. we also have a wind advisory for 3:00 tomorrow morning. we may have gusts to 50 miles per hour. some of these areas in the hills is and along the coastline. that continues throughout the day. these waves of rain moving in. a lot more rain moving in with this storm system. expecting to be a hit or miss variety. we will not all see this at the same time. the models show we will continue

to see off and on rain throughout the day. at lunchtime, it starts to get more light and spotty. we will see this activity into the evening commute. also later tonight. then another round of heavier rain moving in by this time tomorrow morning with more winds and rain. at times the rain will be quite heavy, making things treacherous out there on the roadways. you definitely need to slow it down. 0.3 around fremont and palo alto. an inch for the north bay. so this is the first storm. there will be another one moving in for the end of the weekend. we'll be watching that. to also bring us more rain and snow for the sierra. looking at the possibility the next three days of at least a foot of snow for the higher elevations. as far as rain and temperatures, we stay in the 50s in san francisco. off and on showers. start could be more of a break in the rain. as we go into sunday, the next

welcome back this thursday morning. 4:55 right now. some drivers say there is a hidden danger on trucks starting fires, putting the public at risk. tonight we investigate a device used to cut pollution could be to blame. it is particulate filter. it traps harmful soot that can cause cancer. but many filters are faulty and they believe the parts cause overheating that spark fires.
