why the business faces an uncertain future. and the next wave of rain is already here. you see all that green on the radar. we're tracking the impact it could have on your morning commute. today in the bay starts right now. and of course we are in a microclimate weather alert. good morning. thank you for joining us on this thursday. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. straight to the forecast with kari. >> it is is wet all around the bay area. allow extra time to get to where you're going. streets have been wet because of earlier rain moves through. now we are tracking rain through the north bay. storm ranger around the bay area. it is picking up on pockets of the heaviest rain moving through tiburon, salsalito, petaluma and approaching napa. all of this rain will be with us throughout the day. off and on showers.

i'll talk more about this and the gusty winds that will come along with it. that's coming up in eight minutes. now of to mike, slick can conditions for some. >> that's the big note, kari. anywhere south of let's say san francisco, sprinkles. north of there, that's where the heavier stuff is as kari shows you on the radar. rain coming down the east shore freeway as well. no problems for flooding at least as far as chp reports go. we have an issue for bart. it is not weather related. a problem with the tracks in the richmond area. plan on possible delays. all stations are open for business unlike last night when they closed berkeley. breaking news we continue to follow at this hour. unrest and violence on the streets of berkeley overnight. >> the president is responding after over a thousand people

protests. president trump tweeting this less than two hours ago. "if u.c. berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a view, no federal funds." details on some of the cleanup efforts that are under way at this hour we understand, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and sam. we are still waiting for the university of california, berkeley to respond to president trump's tweet. we did receive word from university police that one person was arrested overnight. not clear what they're being charged with if it is assuming in connection with the destruction. this is one of several windows that have been broken. if you look on the promenade there is still enough out there that needs to be cleaned up. when the vandals were picked off, unfortunately they did move

to the downtown area of berkeley where they targeted wells fargo, bank of america, destroying atms, breaking more windows there. it did start peacefully with several hundred students. protest, were upset over his racism and misogynistic views. at around 6:00 last night, police canceled the speech because of the violence outside the student union. the police chief blames a group of 150 men and women dressed in black with bandanas covering their faces who came from off campus to cause problems. they started throwing rocks, molotov cocktails. they used gaslight posts to generate a fire. as i mentioned, they canceled that speech.

>> we ultimately look like the winners. they are shutting down free he speech. it season ironic that the free speech movement can only be for a few people. >> look at the people who are protesting and causing the violence. it's not the people in the red hats. >> he we have never seen anything like this. it is a venue. they have no skin in the game. they care nothing for what we're here for. and we were faced with a challenge that i think is quite unprecedented. >> reporter: one moment that was quite frightening is when a car drove through the protesters. one person ended up stuck on the top of the car as it continued down the road. fights broke out in the crowd. remarkably there were only six minor injuries last night. coming up within the next 30 minutes we will hear from milo.

>> heavier rain moving in as we get a look at what's happening with our storm ranger. stormranger parked in the san bruno mountains right now. it is picking up on the heaviest rain moving through the north bay. i want to show you what it looks like as we head through marin county where we see some of the heaviest rain in san quentin. this is what the other radars are picking up on. not as much detail. it's not showing the heavier rain moving through san quintin. it's just a few minutes behind. it shows the difference as it continues to track around the bay area. some of the heavier rain. we will be minutes ahead of what the other radars will be picking up on. scattered activity as we go through the rest of the morning. off and on rain. make sure you have the umbrella ready. there will be breaks in between. maybe even sun coming up. as we go late tonight and early

in the morning, there will be another round of heavy rain moving in. along with it, gusty winds. i'll continue to this. another look at the radar in four minutes. as we head over to mike now, delays with the bart. >> that is right. bart system has some delays in the richmond area. something going on with the tracks. overnight maintenance. no other tail. we know they are talking about possibly a 10-minute delay in that stretch of the east bay. the rest of the systems are moving well. going through san francisco or across the dumbarton bridge. no big surprises. altamonte pass out of 580 what you would expect. also in the north bay, damp roadways. bay bridge toll plaza, that's where you will see weather conditions. no backup. back to you. thank you, mike. taking a stand. the reason hundreds of tech employees are walking off the

it is 5:12 this thursday morning. time for the squaw valley and alpine meadows report. we will have more snow showers in the forecast. 156 inches of snow at the base of the mountain. and 96 trails will be open at alpine meadows. more snow in the forecast as we go into the next three days. expecting another foot in spots. coming up in four minutes, we'll talk about sierra snow surveys and the microclimate forecast in just a few minutes. that's a lot of snow. over here we have a minor delay through the richmond area from bart. we'll show you how your commute is shaping up for drivers. >> we are following breaking news out of delaware. hostage situation at a delaware prison is now over. we have learned one prison guard is dead. four were taken hostage by inmates. who were released quickly. two others were held overnight.

we just learned one of those was released but the sec was killed. it is close to delaware's capital of dover. they said they were worried about the leadership of the country, rehabilitation, educational opportunities and how the state spends money on prisons. at 5:14, you may recall when hundreds on of google employee organized their own protest. it seems the idea is catching on. workers from our parent company couple will have one today in sunnyvale. the most recent backlash against uber appears to be far from over. the #delete uber protest is

planned for today. uber has been under fire for turning on surge pricing. taxi drivers refuse to drive there. protests in san francisco goes on at the same time. similar protests will happen in oakland, new orleans, and los angeles. other high-tech companies are worried about what president trump will do about skilled foreign workers. >> we expect that announcement any time. >> really any time. h1b visa. the president has said he will change that program. companies are concerned they won't be able to find enough skilled workers. the h1b visa program brings in highly skilled, highly educated people from other countries, often india and china. the head of godaddy puts it very plainly. he said to be clear, the entire u.s. economy is at stake with this draft order and tech leaders need to speak out on its

>> thank you very much. we have plenty of red for our microclimate forecast. as we are tracking that. the storm expected to bring more snow to the sierra. the second will will take place later today. california department of water resources says 2017 is shaping up to be one of the wettest years ever. >> a lot of people taking advantage of the weekend to head up to the sierra. it can be rocky getting up there. we're facing another one? this weekend not like last weekend when we had the sunshine in the sierra. this weekend, it will still be snowing and raining in the bay area. our microclimate weather alert continues. storm rangerer, mobile doppler radar. it is scanning around the bay area and picking up on some of the heaviest rain in the north bay. it is about to move in very soon. so this truck we have it parked on a mountain in san bruno. it is picking up on yellows and greens here. and the pockets of the heaviest rain now moving through san

quintin, up towards the north and east. we have rain near yontville. please send me your weather pictures i have this one that came in yesterday of the sunrise from ayesha siddiq. go ahead and send it to me and i'll share it with you. 52 degrees in the peninsula and south bay. in the tri-valley. chilly temperatures along with these breezy winds is and this off and on rain. it is definitely a morning to bundle up. there is more of this moisture streaming in. and this will be off and on throughout the day. so if you're not seeing the rain now, just wait awe few minutes. it will be there. will we will see additional rainfall totals up to an inch with the highest amounts for parts of the east and up towards the north bay. for the santa cruz mountains, another inch or so will be

possible. this came in yesterday from a reporter kris. she's at the golden gate bridge. hopefully she will me a picture from there. this is the first of two storms. the second storm is expected to arrive on sunday. with it bringing rounds of rain. scattered showers in the forecast. although more of a break on saturday. it makes it hard to make plans when you only have one day the of the weekend to get out there. and there still may be a chance of rain falling at any point. our highest chances will be sunday into early monday morning. i'll keep tabs on that. mike is tracking a new crash in the tri-valley. >> most of that is north as you have shown on the radar. a little more traffic and a little more moisture. it is possible for sprinkles out of the a lot pass. reports of a crash involving a

thousands of dollars of damage on and off campus. now the speaker who triggered last night's protest started his own facebook live stream shortly after they canceled the event. he was speaking out about an epidemic of political correctness on college campuses. here's what he had to say. >> they don't like what i have i to say about black lives matter or the campus wage gap conspiracy or the wage gap or any of the other things that i

like to investigate. >> last night was the crescendo of violence we have seen. most of it, though, was on a smaller scale. protesters shut down his appearance at uc davis two weeks ago. martin shkreli was also to be at that event. some of our best images comes from you you can post directly to our facebook page. out of the north bay, authorities are investigating a hit and run that killed a pedestrian on highway 101. chp said the truck driver noticed a man's body near atherton avenue. investigators believe the accident happened at 1:00 in the morning. the driver did not stay at the scene. investigators think some smaller gray car struck the man.

it is pretty breezy. this is what folks might feel driving from newark over to palo alto. very heavy and very visible along highway 17 as caltrans tries to keep the main roadway and the back roads clear. other folks are hoping for the best. they are preparing to stay for a few days if their routes are blocked by mudslides or rock slides. >> i'm really not ready for it because the grounds are so saturated that there is going to be moreland slides no matter what. >> know an alternate route to get around. >> we have seen some tow trucks out on the roadway and ready to go. not picking anybody up. hopefully they won't be too busy today. and if you are driving over the bridge, keep both hands on the wheel. in newark, kris sanchez, today

in the bay. >> even if you're not driving over the bridge. >> we know what you mean. it's windy out there. thank you, kris. we are worried about that having effects on power. you vice president seen anything like that so far, kari? >> not so far. but there will be pockets of heavy rain. as you mentioned, the ground is already wet. some of the rain moving into the peninsula as well. and our storm ranger mobile doppler radar truck in san bruno is picking up on the rain a few minutes before the other radars. we are seeing some of the showers moving across san rafael bridge and also over toward the north bay. we are seeing some pockets of heavy rain moving through vacaville and yountville and napa. one pocket will approach san mateo and redwood city in a few minutes. and the rain we talked about in the santa cruz mountains, one area of concern, it is raining

good thursday morning. time now is 5:43. we are in a microclimate weather alert. the storm system brings scattered rain to the bay area. also breeze where wind and snow for the sierra. we will continue to see waves of rain as we go through the day. right now temperatures in the upper 40s to lower 50s. wet roads as you head out the door. make sure you allow some extra time to get to where you're going. and even though the tri-valley looks good, i just got word that more crashes up in the north bay. we're watching novato, highway 101. we'll talk about it and what's going on. live pictures from our richmond camera. crews on the move tracking the rain. much more coming up in a live report in our next hour throughout the morning. 5:44. we are expecting to find out today if a suspect charged with attacking a police officer is fit to stand trial.

he struck him with a skateboard on thanksgiving day. two doctors have been evaluating the suspect to determine if he is competent to stand trial. the doctors are scheduled to report their findings today in a redwood city courtroom. also today, the man charged in a 1982 murder of a 14-year-old girl in vacaville is expected in the solano county juvenile courtroom today. he will appear in juvenile court because he was 17 years old at the time of her murder. the case is expected to be transferred to adult court today. he was already serving time for killing a butte county woman. the nation's first inmate to get a state funded sex rea signment surgery has been moved to prison. she was moved to a prison near fresno yesterday. she was convicted of robbery and killing a man back in 1980. she's been living as a woman in prison since 2009.

this is video of her from 2012. quinn underwent sex assignment surgery in san francisco last month. also new, the massive teachers's pension is downgrading its investment earnings forecast. that means 80,000 teachers are going to have to contribute more money into their pension. that plus cheerleaders suing the nfl and deals like the raiders and the niners. the issue, lack of pay. and walmart is paying nearly a million dollars to settle a case for 22 different counties, including alameda and napa. the retailer is sued for selling plastic products mislabeled as biodegradabl biodegradable. in other news, this from our trade situation. u.s./mexico trade relationship has potentially hit a bit of a speed bump. but china and mexico's relationship seems to be growing. mexico struck a $200 million deal to make these suvs. mexican plants will make 10,000 of them and other chinese vehicles the next four years.

that move creates more than 5,000 jobs in mexico. scott mcgrew joins us now. scott, you say that's one of the down sides of abandoning the transpacific partnership. >> other countries excluded china. it was us teaming up and china would have to deal with all offoof us on a team. it's not going to work if we're not in it. it is their central tenet. regions that voted for president trump may be hurt most by restricting trade. this is that bmw plant in spartanburg, south carolina. brookings institution put together a list of cities that will be hurt by restricting free trade. these cities will be the most because they depend on exports. here's spartanburg, south carolina there.

seattle, new orleans will lose jobs. seattle is pretty liberal. but all of these other cities were full of trump supporters. columbus, indiana. voted for trump 2-1. economists say columbus, indiana is the city most aligned on foreign exports in the whole country as a percentage of its economy. according to economists in this study, people who voted for trump mostly rely on exports to make a living. friday with a big jobs number. facebook knocked it out of the park with its report. tesla fell on wednesday after the crash videos were publish. what's in a name? as of today, tesla motors wants to just be known as tesla. they are changing their name. he been apple did this years ago. it used to be apple computer.

batches like what we are seeing this morning. scattered activity. it's not causing too many problems. this is our mobile doppler radar truck. we are the only ones with this tool. and it is now scanning the red beam around the bay area, picking up on our radar and showing some more intense rain. it's been moving through the north bay but also the peninsula. i want to show you the difference. here's a look at the rain in parts of marin county. it doesn't show as much detail. some are a few minutes behind what we are picking up. we can take it down to street level as we are getting view of what's happening in foster city. and redwood shores parkway some of that rain that is a little heavier that will last awe few more minutes. down through the santa cruz mountains, also picking up on some rain. some of the spots we'll be watching for the highest

rainfall totals the next couple of days. the north bay and the santa cruz mountains. more moisture rolling in. snow in the sierra. this will be off and on throughout the day with breaks in between. as we go hour by hour, here we are in the middle of the commute at 9:30. still pockets of rain moving in. not everyone will be seeing the rain. we may have rain in the south bay. the roads will be wet. off and on rain throughout the rest of the day. early tomorrow morning, a batch of heavier downpours moving in with more energy within that storm system with rain into our area. # 0.3 of an inch in fremont, sunnyvale. oakland, up close to an inch of rain. a little bit higher for the north bay. winds will also pick up. that may raise the concern of a few more trees being knocked down, pushing trees on on an
