>> we are seeing pockets of rain. >> it is not widespread. it is not heavy over the bay area. it has been coming down at a pretty good clip. it is giving us a 2d view of the rain and the height of the clouds. it gives us a higher resolution and even picks up on smoke. this is exclusive to nbc bay area. we are the only ones around here that have it. you see the greens and the yellows that it's picking up on now. it it down to street level. it is now in marin county. 101, south of mill valley. we head of to the east bay where it is rainy as you go across the san mateo bridge and closer to union city. and we are also going to see this moving through the santa cruz mountains, south county, and all of this rain will be with us as we go through the day kind of off and on. and there will be some breaks as well. so i'll talk about that and a

look at the timeline for more gusty winds as we head over to mike now. a new crash for fremont. >> that's right, kari. traffic gets more crowded around the bay. the rain coming through. hayward just north of our crab. 880. this crash relatively new heading southbound. it is slow. the stretch through fremont. in the north, we had another crash. that rain for much of the morning. now we have only one lane still open around ignacio boulevard south of highway 37. making that transition off highway 37. note that through novato. recovery for the richmond line. 44 train relatively fine.

from the campus with a closer look at what happened and the cleanup efforts under way on campus and in the streets of berkeley, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam and laura. we have reached out to the university for their response to the president's threat of withholding federal funds. there are students here at cal who volunteered to get up to clean up the mess caused by the protests last night. a look to your left. this is the centerpiece of the destruction. we spoke to one student. she just tells us how ashamed she is of the people who they believe were not students who, as you can see, caused that damage and broke a number of windows outside the student union. when the police finally kicked the vandals off campus, they unfortunately moved to downtown berkeley. you can see they targeted financial institutions like wells fargo, bank of america, breaking more windows. now, the evening did start out

peacefully with several hundred students protesting milo yiannopolous. protesters were upset over his alleged racist and misogynistic views. but the university was going to let him speak out of first amendment rights. but campus police canceled the speech because of the violence outside the student union. the police chief blames 150 men and women dressed in black with bandanas who came from off campus. they started throwing rocks, fireworks, molotov cocktails. they tore apart bare kaeuldz. they broke the windows. and they started a bonfire. >> we ultimately look like the winners. they are shutting down free speech. it is absolutely ironic that the

birth of the free speech movement can only be for a few people. >> i think everyone watching this can look at the people protesting and the people causing the violence. it is not the people in the red hats. ? we have just never seen anything like that. >> it is a venue. they have no skin in the game. they care nothing for what we're here for. and we were faced with a challenge that i think was unprecedented. >> if you're not looking at your tv screen, this is worth looking up for. this is one moment that was quite frightening. a car driving through a crowd of protesters. one person ended up stuck on top of the hood of the car down the road. fights broke out in the crowd. officers had to rescue individuals. cal police telling us there was one arrest made. coming up in 30 minutes, we will hear milo yannopolous.

the position. he is expected to speak to his department for the first time today. one of the first foreign policy issues tillerson may have to address is iran. yesterday the u.s. issued a stern warning. they said it is a violation of the security resolution. iran denies it is breaching the resolution. so far the trump administration isn't elaborating on what action it might take against iran. following break news out of delaware this morning. a hostage situation at a delaware prison is now over. but a prison guard is dead. four prison employees were originally taken hostage by inmates. two were released fairly quickly. two were held overnight. we have learned within the last hour or so one of those employees was released but the second was killed. that started at a correctional center close to delaware's capital of dover. they said they were concerned about the leadership of this

country, educational opportunities, rehabilitation, and how the state spends money on prisons. new this morning, last call or for a long-time san francisco bar. our cameras were rolling on lefty o'doul's closing its doors. it comes after an ugly court battle between the family that manages the restaurant and the building's owners. >> it faces an uncertain future. >> reporter: good morning to you guys. closing day for lefty o'doul's was bumped up two nights to last night. last call for lefty o'doul's. new video of the last minutes before the bar closed last night in union square. this iconic restaurant has been a main stay since the 1950s. it is a popular meeting spot for sports fans. you see sports memorabilia

as evidence. the merc said the texts show the general con temp for prisoners and their pleasure in seeing inmates suffer. attorneys representing the guard claims the texts have nothing to do with the crimes they are used of. it appears to be far from over. uber has been under fire for turning off pricing when taxi drivers were refusing to drive in protest of president trump's order. it goes on at the same time as oakland, new orleans and los angeles. h&r block is teaming up with watson to work on identifying credit using artificial intelligence. watson has been used to find solutions in health care, retail and other settings. >> hopefully they will find some

wet. we have our radar truck parked on the manipulate in san bruno. we can move around if we need to. but the best view of the north is and south bay and where we have it parked now. where the rain is following and around tiburon you're getting heavy downpours across the golden gate bridge. right over the airport getting heavy rain. this may cause problems. some showers in the east bay. raining in hayward. descending over parts of the tri-valley. schaeffer ranch road. we see some of that falling around the san ramon valley road as well. so watching some of those downpours. also for the santa cruz mountains, widespread rain there descending over toward morgan hill. wet roads on 101. as you drive to work this morning, seeing standing water on the roadways.

once again rain falling around has been wet for a couple of weeks. pretty much throughout the whole month of january. even with light rain moving in, it may cause a few more problems with the potential of some down trees with the winds picking up today. we have had wind gusts to 50 miles per hour. you throw in scattered showers that will be moving in through 6:30, 7:00, even through the morning and afternoon. it will affect tomorrow's commute too. this is the first of two storms. we see the swirl of the clouds here. the second storm system still west of us out in the pacific. that is set to arrive on sunday. looking at the temperatures for san francisco. staying in the upper 50s. off and on rain. another batch of rain sunday

news editor. >> bob redell live on the campus with now a look at the cleanup under way. >> most of the damage is focused on the student union. you see the university is going to have number of windows that will have to be replaced. they are boarded up now. we have this piece of equipment. it's going to have to be moved from the main quad here. the campus will be open for business as usual. this would be a thursday. students have is to return to. they blame a crowd of people who came from off campus specifically to cause problems. the protests did start peacefully with 1400 to 1500 people demonstrating against milo yannopolous. 150 men and women dressed in

black with bandanas covering their faces threw rocks, molotov cocktails, broke windows, used a light post to start a fire prompting the university police to lock down the campus and cancel that speech. this is when a car drove through a crowd of protesters with one person stuck on the hood of the car for quite a distance down the road. fights broke out. some individuals had to be rescued by police. no one was hurt badly. just a handful of minor injuries. >> i say we can be peaceful, and they assault me. it seems nothing to be solved with this amount of violence. they're ruping our campus. i don't think they're students here. >> denigrates people. marginalizes people.

post to our facebook page. a developing story at 637. authorities investigating a hit and run that killed a pedestrian at highway 101. chp says a truck driver noticed a man's body lying in the middle of a southbound lane near atherton avenue. investigators believe the accident happened happened at 1:00 this morning. the driver didn't stay on scene. why this is being called a hit and run. they believe a smaller gray car struck that man and probably suffered front end damage car. police in the south bay asking people to keep their eyes peeled for 12-year-old chris for moreno. authorities saying he was wearing a white sweatshirt that says walden on it you are asked to contact mountain view police department if you see him. a battle over evidence is shaping up in the trial for the man accused of killing sierra lamar.

competent to stand trial. the are scheduled to report their findings today in a redwood city courtroom. the man charged in a 1982 murder of a 14-year-old girl in vacville is expected to juvenile courtroom today. 51-year-old marvin ray markel will appear juvenile court because he was 17 at the time ofrlt murder. the case is expected to be transferred to adult court today. markel is already serving time for killing a butte county woman. >> a 57-year-old shiloh heavenly quinn was moved to a prison near tpres any. she was convicted of robbery and killing a man in 1980. she has been living as a woman in prison from 2009. the video of you looking at her is 2012. quinn underwent sex reament surgery in san francisco last month news from around the state.

some heavy rain moving through parts of marin county, over towards tiburon, just south of mill valley. also alameda approaching oakland. a pocket of heavy rain moving close to san leandro. that's where the roads will be the most slip. owe rain da, pockets of heavy rain there. and then through the delta, near brent wood you are seeing some rain getting heavier. it will last a few more minutes. tri-valley. a steady downpour that will get ready to wind down as we go through the next 20 or 30 minutes. seeing spotty showers for the santa cruz mountains and the south county as well. moving out of san jose, south san jose. near evergreen, the rain moving over towards mount hamilton. waves of rain will be moving in throughout the day. it will be off and on looking at the timeline for the hour-by-hour outlook. spotty rain at 10:30.

at any point we can see some of the rain drops falling in the sky as we go toward early tomorrow morning. another wave of heavy downpours moving in and moving off to the east. we will see not only the first storm system but a second by the end of the weekend. seven day forecast shows temperatures hold steady in the 50s in san francisco. off and on rain even through next wednesday. and a problem now for the oakland commute. >> live shot there of the nimitz freeway. a look at the south bay and the peninsula. wet roads throughout the bay. heading over towards the interchange and up from alameda, across 880 where we see all the slowing. a bumper reported after an earlier crash. the car cleared, bumper in the lanes at broadway. that is closing a slower drive. it may be clearing in the next couple of minutes. more from chp.
