breaking news overnight, the louisville placed on lockdown and a man armed with ma chet tee. when you hear about the tough phone calls i'm having, don't worry about it. just don't worry about it. they're tough. we have to be tough. >> president trump confronting foes and friends alike, possible new sanctions on iran, changing course with israel, and new developments overnight to kill banking rule dodd-frank. rex tillerson is about to take on america's biggest foreign policy challenge, russia. and before the patriots take on the falcons in super bowl li, we have the battle of the late-night jimmys. "early today" starts right now.
4:01 am
good to be with you on this friday morning. we begin with breaking news from paris. an alleged attacker was shot outside the museum. the man, armed with two ma chet tees charged at two soldiers. he said god is great in arabic. there were two backpacks with him. he pulled out a knife and attacked a group of soldiers. one shot five times killing him. they were working to see if it was a lone attack or part of a plot. a surprising turn of event, the white house is now warning israel to stop announcing plans to build new settlements in the occupied west bank. the statement clarified that the administration is concerned specifically with the construction of new settlements, not the existing settlements, which it does not view as an impediment to middle east peace.
4:02 am
this could signal fault lines in the otherwise warm relationship between president donald trump and israel prime minister benjamin netanyahu, who is expected to visit the white house in two weeks. developing overnight, the white house may hit iran with new sanctions as early as today. officials say they would be in response to iran's terrorist activity and repeated ballistic missile tests, and there are strong support for sanctions in congress, as leaders from both sides of the aisle are encouraging the white house to punish iran. just minutes ago, donald trump reiterating on twitter saying iran is playing with fire. they don't appreciate how kind president obama was to them. not me. we are live in tehran. what is the reaction from iran? >> reporter: well, frances, the nuclear deal is barely a year old and tensions from iran front and center once again. we have seen iran subject to a travel ban along with six other

countries. authorities banned the u.s. wrestling team to come to iran to compete in the finals of the wrestling cup. the ballistic missile is to measure president trump's response to put iran on notice, warn military action is an option and slap fresh sanctions on the country for the missile test and other activities. the president may be in unchartered territory with iran. the conflict with america isn't. anti-americanism is defining character here in iran where death to america remains the national slogan 40 years after the revolution. this is going to spell tension between american iran and president rajany's campaign in may where he tried to de-escalate tensions with the united states and iran. that doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon. >> playing with fire as we heard from the president tweet this morning. thank you.

4:06 am
outside of washington, d.c. the two-alarm fire broke out around 9:00 p.m. shooting flames through the roof of the disposal center. fire officials found three stories of trash burning inside an incinerator when they arrived on scene. it took 60 firefighters to get the blaze under control. no injuries and no word on the exact cause of the fire. gearing up, all excited, super bowl sunday features the patriots against the falcons. fallon had puppies and kimmel had nfl stars tackling tweets. >> welcome to puppy predictors super bowl li addition. we have nine puppies and two bowls of kibble. one representing the patriots, the other the falcons. let's release the puppies.
