machete. police are investigating this as a possible terror attack. today in the bay today right now. and we begin with a live look at the radar this morning. it's going to be another wet commute. you can see the rain moving across the bay area. look that rain out there. making for green hill sides too. it's gorgeous. good morning to you. thank you for joining us on this friday morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. that is the up side of this, all the lush greenery we are seeing. >> very wet. soggy. green on the radar. also yellows and reds showing very intense rain that will be coming down just briefly. you can see all of that shifted over towards the east bay. stormranger giving us an hd view. that rain is clearing out. only a couple offy showers. north bay, some lighter activity. the heaviest rain moving through oakland as well as san ramon,

towards the tri-valley and down the east bay as we are seeing some of the heavy rain moving through sinole and out of the south bay. so a lot going on here. this will all be winding down within the next hour and today still spotty light showers going on. so i'll detail that coming up in about eight minutes. heading over to mike, still problems for sap ramon. >> as you show that rain moving over to the east, getting a break, that's about. we could use a break. wet roadways continue. puddling and ponding. no problems as far as the speed sensors go. nothing unusual. we have two crashes there. the second crash occurred a few minutes ago involving a big rig. no major injuries from what we hear. look at all that slowing. a tough drive right now. at least one, maybe two lanes are blocked. getting over towards the bay bridge, you might find standing

water. it might be an issue for off ramps. a smooth drive. 25 minutes from highway 4 to the bay bridge toll plaza. we had that build for highway 101. 27 minutes out of san jose and the mountain view. back to you. kari justed the east bay right now getting plenty of rain. >> today in the bay bob redell is live along 680 to show us some of the conditions there. the lens is fogged over a little bit. all the moisture out there, bob. good morning to you, laura and sam. it's been on and off rain in walnut creek. as you can see right now, we're on. the drive of a black dodge pickup truck learned the hard way why you need to be careful during this morning's commute. of an hour ago, a little before 5:00 this morning, this driver was headed southbound on 680 when, according to cp, this person hydroplaned north of monument boulevard, ended up

facing the wrong of traffic on 680. two other vehicles t-boned the pickup truck. from what we are able to gather and tell, it does not appear anyone was hurt badly. as you were able to see in that video, this truck was moved to the side road and is not impacting the commute. traffic is moving quite well on southbound 680. if you look at our nbc bay area weather app, you can see here, according to our weather radar, we're roughly in this area right here and according to our weather radar, there's a lot of oranges and yellows, which reports an indication we are in the middle of a heavy south right now. we just had two tow truck drivers who pulled away in the last few minutes. not year if they are responding to a call or just trying to get on the road for patrols. it is going to be a wet morning commute. headlights heavy southbound into

famous louvre museum, he pulled out a knife. this just the latest attack in paris. , president trump once again tweeting about this week's violent protests at uc berkeley tweeting just a couple of hours ago saying, "professional an ark i.s, thugs and paid protesters are proving the point of the millions of people who voted to make america great again." just yesterday he threatened to pull federal funding from cal. police are plaming so-called black bloc protesters. it comes from how they dress. university administrators are denouncing the actions saying they are not a part of cal. one of the protest organizers of the event was put on

administrative leave from teaching job after she punished a man after a ne-yo nazi counter protest is applauding the decision. >> we were united in the many diverse and different ways that people express their determination to stop fascism and stand up against racism. and we knew that what needed to be done had to be done. >> they said the vandalism is a small price to pay. the university is responsible. the school is now reevaluating tactics to handle an unprecedented protest. >> now, in light of this week's protests in berkeley, this weekend we'll re-air an episode of our emmy-award winning "bay area revelations."

bay area. once again showing the heaviest rain moving through the tri-valley with pockets of heavy rain, moving closer to union city and also for san jose, the foothills get anything on heavy rain. and also the santa cruz mountains. an where we will watch or for the potential of more mudslides and problems out on the roads. it's also causing some problems for flooding. and mike has an update in oakland. >> more folks on the roadway. reports of anything going on at the off-ramp at the top of your screen. the latest report for the off-ramp being flooded right as you exit the freeway. slowing north 280 recovering from a crash in san jose around wolf road. looking over towards that area, oakland has had a number of off ramps affected by standing water. be careful through the area. 680, san ramon, slowing us because of a couple of crashes. bart saying anything about slowing trains. sometimes they do when it rains,

new details on a deadly shooting in the south bay. we covered it on today in the bay. 20-year-old min was killed on actually road near the east ridge mall. the city's fourth homicide of 2017. police still haven't identified any suspects or released a motive in the shooting. nordstrom said it will stop selling ivanka trump clothing and accessories. the department store chain said it was based on sales performance. a spokesperson did not say if the move was permanent. only that they make buying decisions every season. grab your wallet, which is calling for a boycott of merchandise by ivanka or donald trump. more good news for the american economy this morning.

227,000 jobs wered added to the economy in the of january. >> but, scott mc, january was an unusual month. who gets credit for this? >> that's the big question. two presidents, right, in january. half of january, president obama was president, the other half president trump was president. 227,000, very strong number. unemployment rate, 4.8%. retail and construction jobs very strong. it's going to be interesting to see how or even if president trump reacts to this number. he has been quick to react to job numbers in the past before he was president. in the case of bad numbers he was quick to how sad those were. but in the case of good numbers, mr. trump would say the unemployment number was fake or that the labor department was using the wrong measure. the markets barely moved wednesday. dow down six.

nasdaq lost six. still awaiting word on the president's restriction on foreign visas for skilled workers. tech ceos started arriving at the white house this morning. this includes elon musk. musk defending his participation with the president's business council, explaining it is better to be part of the decision making. musk says he understands the perspective of those who object to him attending the meeting. but he he believes it's critical on that he will serve the greater good. you recall the head of uber dropped out of the president's business council yes. he had the same idea as musk. it is better to be in there helping out. a lot of people saw it as an endorsement by uber of president trump's policies. >> taking the stance before

some of the showers still lingering. some of the heavy rain continue to go move into the east bay as well as the south bay. stormranger, mobile doppler radar truck on the san bruno mountain showing the highest definition of rain crossing the bay into oakland and san andro, continue to go move east with bright reds and yellows there in some spots. pretty good coverage of steady rain in the south bay right now. and also for the santa cruz mountains where we see the yellows and some reds there showing some pretty intense downpours. at lunchtime, you may want to take a lunch outside. don't be surprised if you see quick moving rain. and even more the commute, lingering showers moving through. brief heavy rain even into early tomorrow morning before the

seeing a lot more puddling. minor flooding for the oakland area. north 280, saratoga avenue, we may have a crash cleared from lanes. we have easing. we'll continue to follow that until chp gives us the all clear. off ramps might have minor flooding as well. we have these to go improve as well past the second crash morning. at least one has cleared from the roadway. second involving a big rig should be cleared shortly. approaching the bay bridge, no major concerns. we have seminary, clarmont area for highway 24. minor flooding for the on and off-ramp. be careful there. a look at the travel times. not so bad approaching the bay bridge. you're at 30 minutes, pretty standard this time of morning. highway 4 to the bay bridge toll

welcome back. 6:27 on your friday. >> a concern about a segment he we brought you earlier this week. >> chris chmura is here to address it now. >> monday we told you the story of james larson, a teacher who prepaid for bart tickets for a field that he later canceled. we said our contact with bart prompted a full refund. bart disputed our role saying it issued a refund before we stepped in. here's the timeline. james requested a refund on december 5th. december 6th, bart denied him, noting the tickets were nonrefundable. that night he sent us a complaint. we contacted bart december 8th. within a few hours they said a spokesperson told us they made a one-time exception but didn't say when.

6:37. three people are in custody tied to a string of south bay purse snatchings. these are the suspects facing charges. investigators linked them to at least nine different shopping center purse snatchings in the last three months. in many cases they were targeting asian women. some were punched in the process. they face felony charges. california has found at the center of one of president trump's tweets. making a dig at former california governor schwarzenegger. donald trump said yes, arnold schwarzenegger did a really bad job as governor of california and even worse as "the apprentice". but at least he tried hard. the two got into a heated exchange about "the apprentice" yesterday. >> he also took to twitter on iran.

dead le "ghost ship" fire. they are asking for the city to provide police and fire department records on the fire. the group claims the city is delaying the release. it says the documents could help explain how the city missed chances to close the building. investigators say it is dangerous. 36 people were killed in that fire. the murder trial of garcia torres, the man accused of killing sierra lamar, takes a break today. yesterday three of lamar's testified. questions were centered around whether lamar was capable of running away. also the defense cross-examined an investigator who testified that evidence was processed at the scene rather than a crime lab. the defense is trying to claim the evidence is tainted. the defense is also suggesting lamar's dna found in the suspect's car was also jeopardized. 15-year-old lamar disappeared in 2012. her body has never been found.

today's very solid economic report. >> scott mcgrew is dying to know what he will say about that. tell us why, scott. >> absolutely. he's not been shy, guys, about speaking out about the jobs numbers in the past. to bring you up to speed, we got the latest jobs numbers from the labor department a short time ago. 227,000 jobs added to the american economy in january. unemployment, 4.8%. so this is an odd jobs number. half of january, president obama was president, the other half president trump is president. that's why i'm curious. president trump often criticized the labor department for issuing what he said were fake numbers. while the unemployment rate is a statistical estimate, there's no evidence it is fake. methods have been used by republican and democratic administrations. i'll be accuse curious what he has to say. ipo filings are like that business reporters, like reading someone else's diary.

at least the storm system is winding down. more spotty activity through the going to see this lasting all that long. still pockets of heavy rain through emeryville, berkeley, down to oakland. also through san leandro. south baker's cyst steady downpour. it will be getting lighter in the next few minutes. the heavy rain just moved out of south county from gilroy, san martin, and morgan hill. as we will continue to see this shifting off to the east. and still some lingering moisture. that could be with us throughout the day. we will get more breaks. even a few of sunshine. temperatures will be cooling down as cold front sweeps through right now. and still providing enough of that moisture moving through to give us a wet afternoon into the evening. but it won't be widespread. it won't just be raining constantly. so you may be able to get in outdoor plans walking the dog or going for a job yourself as we go into this evening.
