moment a landslide destroyed a north bay home. many communities on edge with more rain on the way. today in the bay continues right now. all right. pretty amazing and disturbing pictures and videos we're seeing this morning. we begin with with a live look at the radar. we are in a microclimate weather alert. you can see what's level still moving in over the bay area. we're in for more rain tomorrow as well. >> nbc bay area has you covered. out in every region of the area. a very good wednesday morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. mudslides a concern, kari. >> yeah. and we have had closed roads. mike checking in on that. we have seen the waves of steady

downpours continuing as this atmospheric river continues to bring more rain into the area. we have stormranger. we are the only ones with a special tool gives us high detail of what's happening as far as rain. we are still seeing rain in the santa cruz mountains. light showers near san jose. but the santa cruz mountains an area we are deeply concerned with. i'll have another look at the radar as the storm system finally up by the end of the weekend. mike tracking that mudslide on 17. we will likely have more rain. we have outstanding issues for 580. some of your usual reports when

you hear rain has come through. getting a break. but still traffic control for highway 17. both directions are coming through. i want to make sure we get of here. this is west 580. out of the altamonte pass, you are jammed. 45-minute extra drive. half an hour now. the backup because of road work. look at the traffic shot we have. the traffic jammed up. the curve at the top is altamonte pass. that is not a good alternate. both are jammed up. blocking the two right lanes. you have only half of your freeways throughout the morning commute. we head right back to you guys. >> you can see from the chopper shots how far back up this is. we have team coverage of

interstate 580. how is it looking out there, kris? >> reporter: well, we're here at the liver under truck scales. we're off the freeway. that's why we are not wearing our safety vests. some of this is normal, but some opened up on greenville road and basco road. we got video of six cars boeing towed this morning. that could be because of the pothole. sometimes when you hit them they can do serious damage. we saw six vehicles that were in the process of being towed or that needed to be towed. we saw one van that looked like it had a broken axle because the wheel was sticking out the front driver's side of the car. this is going to be a rough commute because that 10 foot by 3 foot hole with rebar sticking through, that will be a big repair.

lanes may be closed until 3:00 this afternoon. we just had a u.p.s. driver passing by. couldn't talk on camera because of their camera. this is something that has been going on for days. they he reported it. even back on saturday he saw 30 cars that had damage because of that. we hear the chopper overhead. so we know we're seeing the backup right now. once daytime comes, we will get a better look at the pothole. >> just the description of it sounds you rough. thanks, kris. 6:04, this might be the new normal moving on to highway 17. a live look as crews are racing to open up more lanes. there is that live look. the shae highway was shut down after a mudslide. it happened between sugarloaf and vine hill road.

crews have been working to try to clean up that mess. it certainly affects thousands of people. a live look at the russian river in guerneville and a precarious situation there as it is expected to crest at some point this hour. flooding a major concern as the next round of rain moves in. pete suratos is monitoring the russian river for us. a live report at 6:30. highway 84 in niles canyon opened after lanes were shut down about 12 hours yesterday. floodwaters from alameda creek and defree were to blame. they said they needed a break from the rain. >> pretty bad. we got it done. >> this is what highway 84 looked like when it was all said and done. it came from clogged storm

drains and the raging alameda creek. the highway did not reopen until just before 8:00 last night. >> an escalating situation on the peninsula right now. more rain could mean more raw sewage. >> this is what it looked like last night. it took on water as pipes backed up. that mixture of flooding and, laura just mentioned, raw sewage, forced people out of their homes. it is not the first time that has happened to the mobile home park. last year floods caused some hopes to be regular tagged. more rain could mean more raw sewage starting to nour there. we will follow this throughout the course of the morning. this from oakland hills. we want to see your photos as well. you can always tag us on twitter, instagram, post it on

facebook as well. and we might just show it on tv. access live doppler radar witanp dates when rain is within 30 minutes of your area. police may have a clue of the mysterious death of a novato woman. here's video from the scene. it happened on san marcos court. she appeared to have suffered from a gunshot. police are looking for her boyfriend. he is considered armed and dangerous. police released this photo of his suspected license plate. he may be driving a 2008 silver hyundai suv. happening today, a decision from the san francisco board of supervisors could make the city more rescue pet friendly.

they will cast a vote on an ordinance to only allow pet stores to sell dogs and cats if they are rescue animals. the countdown is officially on on as of today. we are one year away until the 2018 winter olympics in south korea. >> there are 13 competitions over two main clusters. the coastal and mountain clusters. >> nbc spoke to olympic veteran lindsey vonn. she said she needs to build upon her past successes to hopefully snag more follows for her final olympics. >> i think this is going to be a really good olympics for me, probably closing out my career. i felt like vancouver was the first time i really figured out the olympics and how to approach them and how to deal with it memorily. this is going to be a great way

to end my career. and we are going to continue our countdown to the olympic coverage throughout the show. the "today" show is picking that up at 7:00 a.m. after today in the bay. you can feel like an olympian as you head to the sierra. we're tracking more rain moving through the bay care. a live look from our san francisco camera. and san francisco is getting a little activity right now. another check of the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. even more to our north, kari. >> 6:09, a lot of heavy rain out north bay, across the golden gate bridge. the rain hitting the camera lens there. more of this rain continues especially for the north bay where it has been the heaviest. it is scanning all of this heavy rain moving through the santa cruz mountains as well. we are seeing pockets of heavy rain in the areas that really don't need it. we have had so much rain there.

showers wrapping up for parts of san francisco. and i'll have a look at the squaw valley alpine meadows report. let's see how the roadsed are moving and the rails. >> we still have flooding up there. a look at most of your drive. really nothing unexpected. over here we are looking to highway 37 both directions. atherton avenue is your alternate. i don't think they're going to clear that before the next set of rain comes in. still following this as well. traffic control for highway 17, vine hill road. you can travel both directions. one lane in each direction. i wanted to talk about the transit systems.

good wednesday morning. it is 6:14. and rain happening now in the sierra. there will be more rain at squaw valley and alpine meadow changing to snow the next couple of days. it looks like it will be a nice weekend. but right now none of the trails are open at alpine meadows. we'll have a look as another storm rolls in in five minutes. and a big jam out of the altamonte pass, into livermore. west of greenville, you're doing okay. nice, smooth drive for the bay bridge. wet roads will continue to be a problem. >> mike, thank you very much. 6:14. a follow-up on the dakota pipeline. the project is moving forward. the u.s. army will grant a final

permit after an order from president trump to expedite the project. it would carry crude oil to a refinery in illinois. widespread protests against the prong drew thousands of people to the north dakota plains, including the native american tribes and environmental activists. seattle becomes the first major city to cut ties with a san francisco bay wells fargo over the bank's involvement in funding the dakota access pipeline project. the vote prompted chants from crowds packing the city council chambers. demonstrators who came to see the vote hope it sends shock waves all the way to standing rock. quarter after 6:00. youtube wants to help its stars make more money. it is rolling out live streaming

>> enjoy the break. we are taking a break from heavier powers and all the strong winds yesterday at this time. this is a live look at san jose. what's happening here is really slowing down. make sure you grab the umbrella as we start to see some of the rain close anything on the south bay. we powered up stormranger, our mobile doppler radar truck. it is giving us a high definition view of what's happening around the area. we have had pockets of heavy downpours in the santa cruz mountains and copious amounts of rain. we have had a foot of rain. more on the way. san francisco, spotty light showers. as you go through the north bay, rain starting to pick up once again. richmond, san rafael bridge,

rain pouring. and pockets of heavy rain there. you go south of sonomsonoma, po of heavy rain there. reds and yellows. this is what the stormranger is detecting right there on 121. i want to take off the stormranger to show you the level of detail that's lost. it puts you a few minutes ahead of what the other radars are showing. we will start to see the rain getting lighter. a lot more spotty. there we go. that's our break. river levels coming back town. creeks going down. here we two tomorrow morning. during that commute, heavy rain moving from north, south, along with gusty winds. and additional rainfall total witness stand a couple more waves of rain moving in. so looking at the estimated rainfall, the potential of at least an inch of rain for much of the inland valleys, along the

coastline and for the hills. an additional two to three inches of rain as the atmospheric river brings more heavy rainfall across the bay area. mike, anymore closures? >> we don't have anymore of them. i can track the ones we have. most of your commute looks just fine. this is a great picture. westbound 580, altamonte pass, this is the big jam. there you go. it is a pothole on. it is 10 x 3. that is not a pothole. that is a trench. they have had to close lanes. cars damaged through the area as well. back to your map. that's the big backup out of the

welcome back, everyone. 6:25 on wednesday morning. a warning about the potential dangers of medical marijuana. a new study out of uc davis more than bacterial contaminants in samples. pathogens could cause serious, even deadly ins. they could be risky for patients, especially with weaker

immune systems. a warning for anyone who has connected their in home appliances to their wi-fi system. as many as three-quarters of in-home wi-fi networks could be vulnerable to hackers. they come with a weak default password which a lot of people don't end up changing and easily compromised hackers can break in and gain access to in-home security cameras and crack into the alarm system and use smart devices to access financial information. to protect yourself, do this. create sprat wi- sprat why sepa networks. or turn on your coffee maker yourself. >> with a computer's help? or not 1-2-3-4 on the password.

ans garage. >> we can't catch a good break with this. it is an atmospheric river streaming across the bay area, tapping into deep moisture. we are also going the see highs of a little bit more energy. next few hours pretty wet fort bay area, especially san francisco farther to the north. you see the red beam on the map? that's our stormranger, our mobile doppler radar. it is is showing rain moving through the north bay. still pockets of heavy rain near sonoma and vallejo. san francisco, lighter showers there. the rain is closing in. but still pouring heavily around los gatos and cambria park as well as saratoga. a wet drive for the south county, the roads up 101 are

very wet. it will get lighter throughout the day. i'll keep tabs on that and when the next round of heavy rain moves in. the repair work on 580. >> this is a repeated issue. on the left side, the two right lanes, slow lanes are blocked. you can see the shadowy area underneath the tpwhraeuglare. that is a pothole. it has rebar. the backup to westbound 580. you will also see overall positions. there you go. just off the bottom of your screen. altamonte pass road. that is not a good issue for you. this is creating problems for folks coming in. if you jump on to the freeway,

you're doing okay over to the dublin interchange. the rest of your drive pretty predictable. a crash. i just got word they cleared all lanes. >> team coverage tracking all of this rain hitting the bay area. now the damage left behind. crews are rushing to clean up this mudslide on highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains. just one lane in each direction is open right now. it is happening between sugarloaf and vine hill. bob redell along highway 17. how is the commute looking so far, bob? good morning, laura. trance and chp have taken southbound 17 and turned that into a two-lane highway.

northbound 17, if you look where the white lights are, the mudslide covering one of the lanes northbound. caltrans expected back out here in an hour and a half. they are waiting on a special piece of equipment later today. a mountain of mud spilled onto the lanes northbound 17 between sugarloaf and vine hill roads causing a vehicle to roll over. that driver is okay. workers are trying to be careful not to remove too much material from the bottom of the slide. otherwise, the material on the top can-can come sliding down. caltrans has ordered a special piece of equipment they call the spider. it will be able to remove debris at the top of the slide. >> each wheel is a separate arm that can kind of fold out and you can climb up with the spider.

>> it is horrifying. we had a bus full of kids come two hours before this landslide. it could have been all of our children in that accident there. >> incidentally where this mudslide took place yesterday is the same location where there was another mudslide a month ago. we did speak with chp this morning. there's no official estimated time of reopening. they are opening to get it reopened later today, if not sometime tomorrow. reporting live along highway 17, bob redell, today in the bay. ? all right. such a dangerous stretch of road there. bob, thank you very much for the update. another concern during any rainstorm for that matter. but this time is flooding in guerneville. we look at the images we have seen the last couple of days. pete suratos joining us to show us what it looks like. the river is cresting right now,

pete. it skrecrested at 6:00 a.m. we have shown you this for the past month. the water was reaching up halfway towards that window. near the front door entrance. it's a couple feet below that. we are seeing the flooding, at least what we saw last month. so around the low-lying areas. and here off drake road. moderate flood stage.

lower lying parts of guerneville fpt the russian river will stand about 34 feet at least through this morning. the river will stay in the moderate flood stage. pete suratos, today in the bay. isn't it amazing to see. this is in the north bay where severe weather is certainly in action. a slow moving landslide in san rafael. pretty incredible video sent to our newsroom last night. fortunately no one in the family was hurt. but they are without a place to stay this morning. >> i went back in to get my wife and my son. at that point the slide came down through the kitchen window. >> more rain after yesterday's damaging storm. this mudslide will show you might take up to a week to clean up.

fortunately, the napa river is dropping this morning. but it crested last night, closing part of memorial park. >> we are waiting to great expectations to find out what's going to happen in the first 100 days of the president's term. and arguments made before the ninth circuit court of appeals will lead a landmark decision about the temporary travel bay. >> edward, where does it stand? >> sam and laura, right now the three judge panel is considering weather to keep the temporarily travel ban in place. this is one of the checks and balances at work here of the constitution. within the 10 minutes, president donald trump spoke at a conference of police chiefs. he said he does not want to criticize the judge. but he had if the three-judge panel does not rein state the travel ban and do what is right, the judges may be politically

biased. they asked pointed questions to challenge each side. it is likely it will end up in supreme court. back to you, sam and laura. >> all right, ed. thank you very much. back to our microclimate weather alert and a live look at the san mateo bridge. slick conditions and a slow go as you head to the peninsula. give yourself extra drive time. >> let's check back in with meteorologist kari hall. at 6:40, we have light winds all across the bay area. about 15 to 20 miles per hour at times. but look at the wind forecast as we go into tonight with the next wave moving in. half moon bay at 30 miles per hour. early tomorrow morning, we will have heavy rain coming down. winds closer to 40 miles per hour near the coastline area. 20 to 30 miles per hour.

so this could cause more problems with downed trees and power lines. and we have had a lot of mudslides. so we are talking about that coming up in four minutes fpt let's see what's happening as you head out for that commute. a lot of closures. >> that's right, kari. trees and wires down outside of the valley. highway 35 at 84. we see smaller slides over the course of any storm. they may be letting traffic through as daylight approaches. no traffic there. use atherton avenue. that continues there as well. approach towards the bay bridge. no delays reported for mass transit. great news for bart.

weather restrictions could last longer. they are considering a recommendation to extend regulars at least through the spring. that's when governor brown would make the final decision. new details in the case of three santa clara jail guards accused of beating a mentally ill inmate to death. yesterday a judge ruled the jury will get to see some text messages from at least one of the guards. they are accused of beating him to death. they pleaded not guilty and have been on paid leave since his body was found. the messages show at least one of the garden joyed seeing the inmate suffer. firefighters are trying to keep an eye on it from the sky. there are the aerial pictures. they have used drones to help out in ava right of situations

like water rescues and searches. president trump said that he plans to pend a fair amount of time away from the white house either in florida as he did this weekend or trump tower in. >> they will have to go with him. >> they need to be close to the president. the department of defense will rent an office space at trump power so that military adviseers can be close to the president. this means the d.o.d. will pay rent to trump tower which is owned by president trump. the defense department cutting a check to the president is something we have ever, ever seen before. the first lady, meanwhile is denying reports wants to profit from her position. she sued a british newspaper, the daily mail, for what she had were slanderous lies and said it

would affect her ability to make money from her position. the suit said she has the opportunity to make a unique once in a lifetime opportunity to launch a broad based commercial brand as she becomes one of the most photographed women. her attorney said she will not profit from her position and will not do so. but the person that said that and the person who said this are the same people in the same week. opening the nasdaq, open at an all time high. markets slightly lower this morning but barely moving. we love when you watch the "today" show on nbc. it doesn't mean we're not friends of charlie rose. he will undergo heart surgery to

that one. no. the reservoirs can't contain all the water. our creeks and streams can't either. >> the problem l with the next round of heavy rain moving in. it will cause problems the next couple of days. a look at the stormranger now, mobile doppler radar showing even more rain in san francisco and the north bay. that will be where we will have more problems spots. showing the heavy rain moving through parts of sa hand know company, sa know that, napa, marin county. some of the heaviest rain approaching vacaville as well. in the east bay, light showers through richmond, emeryville, berkeley, as well as oakland. a little bit dryer in the south bay. a lot of rain in the santa cruz

mountains. south county, we are seeing light showers in. slippery for gilroy. and the delta as well, light showers. it looks like as we go through the day, there will be breaks in the rain. any rain we do see will be light. this is ahead of the next round of heavier rain arriving for tomorrow morning's commute right there at 9:30 tomorrow morning. heavy rain north to south. and month fg in throughout the day. several more hours of heavy rain will add to more downed trees, power lines and more flooding. the rainfall totals look to be anywhere from two, possibly two additional inches of rain. and about an inch of spots for spots like the silicon valley area. we see the atmospheric river into deep moisture. i'm tracking it all.
