5:03 am
>> it's taking a risk, yeah. but it is taking a great risk by moving this big old hunk of thing. >> i have lived here all my life and seen current floods. so the current flood is not so bad. it has been moreland slides and downed trees that caused more trouble than the actual level of the river. >> the last recorded river level was at about 32 and a half feet. right now at about 32 feet. it is expected to trend down to 29 feet before coming back up again tomorrow morning. pete suratos for today in the bay. >> all right. thank you very much, pete. here's a live look in the meantime at the santa cruz mountains. mudslides and washed out roads plaguing parts of the area. we are getting an update on how much longer it is going to take to fix 17. they're having trouble there. caltrans is working on highway 17 trying to clear out the mudslide that happened on

snow in the sierra. >> that's right. it will change back to snow once this cold front moves through. now we are dealing with very warm air. you can feel it as you step out the door. some of the showers moving in. in the north bay, lighter showers. it will get heavier in the 7:00 to 8:00 hour. especially for the north bay. we see the bright yellows and reds showing the more intense red. it becomes more widespread in the 9:00 and 10:00 hour. in the south bay, you will not see that until 10:00. we will have pouring rain. and still even at 3:00, it will be coming down hard from san francisco over toward oakland and farther south. at 5:00 during the evening commute, still wet in the north bay. the heaviest rain will have shifted to the south bay. coming up at 5:12, we will talk about the forecast for sierra as squaw valley and alpine and also a look ahead to the forecast.
5:08 am
mike, how is it looking for the roads early this morning? >> the radar concerns me. you've been mentioning the north bay. it moves over towards the east bay across the san mateo bridge when that pluck of traffic comes through. the last place to build, cupertino. it is getting hit with the late thor amount. leave earlier if you can today, folks, to beat the traffic. over here, traffic flowing much more smoothly for 580. with nothing restricting traffic, folks will make it to the interchange just fine. right now a 25-minute drive. no major surprises over there. mass transit as well. ferry system sometimes affected by the weather. no alerts. no delays fort bart system. a nice, smooth drive.

created a crisis for some of his apple employees and their families. >> we have employees that secured a work visa. they located in the united states. they brought their family to the united states. they happened to be outside the united states when the executive order was issued. and all of a sudden their family is split. they couldn't get back in. and arguably that's a crisis. >> a crisis. but sam and laura, i want to play a second sound bite. this addresses the issue i have been talking about for two weeks now. the fear in silicon valley is this will get worse. we have seen people with legal residency detained. the fear is h1b visa workers will be in the u.s. >> we have been able to work through that. but you can imagine the stress and now the feeling that exists

5:16 am
>> they keep working on it. that stock is down big. if they cannot scyld here, twitter cannot succeed, there you go. >> it is in such stark contrast of facebook, which continues to grow. >> talking about trends. we have been seeing a lot of this lately. very dangerous situation playing out. this is in massachusetts, the other side of the country. one car set off a set of chain reactions deer piroettuettes. much of the northeast right now is expecting a major snowstorm later today. so if you're planning on traveling to the east coast can, keep that in mind. >> no. that's the worst feeling being in a car spinning out of control. >> that can happen even on the
5:17 am
wet roads. it doesn't take ice. just a little bit of water. >> you can hydroplane. a lot more rain coming our way. >> definitely a possibility. the morning commute is when the heaviest rain will be falling. be mindful as you make plans for the day. we get a look at the golden gate bridge. it is already quite slick out there. the windshield wipers on. some light rain. dealing with wet roads across the bay area. some of the heaviest rain is still in the north bay. it will get heavier as we two through the 7:00 to 8:00 hour for the north bay. a little bit later farther south. as we get a look at some of the pockets of the yellows on the radar, it is showing the heaviest rain well to the north of us. still a steady downpour across santa rosa, guerneville. it is starting to reach closer to know val toe, petaluma and san rafael. here's a look at the timeline. at 8:00 this morning, that's
5:18 am
when, once again, a lot more people get out, wake up, get busy heading to work or school. we will have heavy rain moving in. a lot of the schools in the north bay will be closed when we see a lot of flooding. it extends into san francisco, the peninsula, and reaching into the east bay. at 10:00 this morning, getting into the south bay by 10:00 or 11:00. and refusier as we go early afternoon. grab the lunch and head back inside to work. possibly some really heavy downpours causing flooding and standing water on the roadways by the evening commute. then it starts to get a little bit lighter for the north bay by 7:00. but still pretty good steady pace of that rain falling from the peninsula over to the east bay southward, drying out later on tonight.
5:19 am
additional rainfall levels up to an inch of the north bay, as well as the santa cruz mountains. up to close to two inches of additional rainfall on top of what we have already seen. we can finally see the drying of the storm system well to the west of us. as this moves in, we will put an end to all of this rain. we are closely watching all of our river levels and our creeks. for more information on that, let's head over to vianey live at the guadalupe river. hey, kari, good morning. yeah. right now it's all nice and peaceful. we're getting a little bit of a breeze. if you pay close attention you can see the river is still flowing. we're seeing a strong flow. we are seeing it is still very high. if you notice, it's also flooded part of that lower bike way. very high up onto the top part of the bike way as well. so what we are seeing right now it is still coming in.
5:20 am
which means at this point that incoming storm we are tracking in is going to be a big concern. especially with any little changes. and we add any water to that as well. let's talk about the river stages. of now the highest level this is expected to reach, we have two monitoring points. guadalupe highway 101. that is expected to reach its highest level. about 14.4 feet. at 11:00 tonight with the monitor stage being at about 15 feet. guadalupe is expected to remain below monster staeufpblgt judging by just how strong this current is and how high it is, it is still a dangerous situation with the incoming storm. i know the storm is expected to reach this area at 10:30, 11:00.
5:21 am
so once that storm does make its way to the south bay, we'll keep close eye on the river levels. coming up, i'll have a look at the russian river and where that is in terms of the flooded stages. mike, how is the road looking out there? >> first of all, let's talk about that river walk, i guess. the guadalupe river today. be careful out there. the water is on the sidewalk area. it will be more of a problem as the run comes in this afternoon. they are moving pretty well. the good news for highway 17, is that it is moving at all. traffic control both directions between granite creek and vine hill. a little farther south than yesterday morning. still the same situation with the shift. it will likely be there i would say monday anticipating for both directions. hopefully it's a safe day today. 580 moves well. repair over greenville. no more problems for the roadway. watch this dublin interchange.
5:22 am
i'll track it. we will see more traffic earlier in the commute. over here, everyone is held up between atherton and 101. one eastbound lane open. with the rain coming in, don't count on it. use atherton because that is a safer, easier, more dependable route. your approach to the bay bridge. still 15 minutes. easy drive from highway 4 to the bay bridge. showing you the tower over there and the camera shakes a bit. it may be a factor for you across the span. of course the wet roads throughout the north bay gets you back to the system we're talking about. >> the wind gusts a concern for the trees. a directv customer pays for service he got. nbc bay area responds. after paying for hdtv for
