check it out in a little while. and al will have our forecast. that is our top story this morning. could see the biggest snow totals of the season here in the northeast. our team is spread out across the region. let's start with "today" national correspondent, craig melvin, just a few blocks to our north in central park. craig, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, as you can see, the snow continues to fall here in central park. here's the thing, just this time yesterday almost 60 degrees. folks were walking around this park with t-shirts and shorts. now here we are schools shut down in new york city. schools also shut down in boston. we are looking at a nasty, nasty winter storm. it may be the nastiest winter storm of the season. snow already falling in some spots this morning. but blizzard-like conditions are expected to ramp up quickly. overnight, salt trucks getting roads ready for a messy morning commute. but in many places, drivers are

being urged to stay off of the roads altogether. before the storm even started, airlines canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. >> i told my boss, i'll see you monday, unless i get snowed in. i was being facetious at the time. but now maybe not so much. >> reporter: the snowstorm on track to impact millions in the northeast. just one day earlier, the calm before the storm. washington, d.c., baltimore, philadelphia and new york city, all saw record-high temperatures. the warmth, now getting blown away. temperatures expected to drop as much as 30 degrees. new england, still recovering from an ice storm that hit the region 24 hours earlier. in massachusetts, a sheet of ice caused a 55-car pileup along a highway. >> all you could hear is one after another slamming into each other. >> reporter: cars and people losing traction. >> oh, my god. are you okay? >> reporter: now, bracing for another impact. >> if you have a chance to take

the day off, take the day off and enjoy some snow. >> reporter: one of the major parts of this story continues to be the travel. take a look at this misery map from flight aware. you can see the areas in red in the northeast corridor. well over 3,000 flights have been canceled so far. that does not include the delays. that's a figure that we expect will get considerably worse as the day goes on. the domino effect, we will see that up and down eastern seaboard. guys, back to you. >> all right, craig. thank you very much. let's head 100 miles southwest to philadelphia where heavy snow is also falling. nbc's indra petersons is there. good morning. >> reporter: winter is here. i can't tell you guys how weird this is. just yesterday, temperatures were 25 degrees above normal. we set a record here in philly, at 66 degrees. and now, this. heavy snow falling down. let me tell you who is happy

about this -- the ski resorts. let's show you a camera out towards camelback, where they are expecting eight to ten inches of snowfall. here back in philly we have a winter snow warning. we expect the snow to really come down. here's the key, though. just about an hour ago, this was all heavy rain. so these roads, they are not now, we're going into morning rush hour. anything underneath this. you're not looking for any salt. the temperatures were 40 degrees. we're down to about 32. with that, we have a little layer of ice underneath here, with no salt on the roads and a lot of traffic headed on to our roadways. it will be a tough drive out there this morning with only a heavier snow expected to fall in the next few hours. maria? >> looks pretty. thanks so much. al, what are we looking for the rest of the day? >> it's going to be a quick mover. that's the good news. while it's here, we feel the impact. 51 million people under a winter advisory, or winter storm warning or blizzard warning. this is a vigorous storm system.

we're hearing reports of thunder snow in upstate new york. albany reporting four inches of snow in the last hour. let's show you what you have happen right now. the storm system makes its way up the coast. right now the timing of this brings it about 10:00 a.m. heavy snow, from new york city, into providence, up towards boston. we're watching this fall at a fairly quick clip. there's a blizzard threat for 2:00 at long island and cape cod. snowfall rates 1 to 4 inches per hour. as this continues, thursday evening, this evening, we look for to it pull away. the evening commute will be rough for boston and parts of coastal new england. here's what we look for as far as the snowfall totals. that's what we have right now. we're expecting to see about scranton, pennsylvania, 5 to 9 inches, inland. philadelphia, 3 to 6. new york city, 8 to 12. montauk, upwards of a foot and a half of snow. as we get into new england, we're going to look at the snowfall totals again. boston, providence, 12 to 16 inches of snow.

hartford, as well. this is going to be a quick mover. and, guys, this will be the first time, if we get six inches of snow, that new york city has gone from a record high to a snowstorm of six inches or more. never has happened before. >> in history? >> in history. >> and we were here for it. >> you were here. it's maria's fault. >> there you go. >> history. >> all right, al. thank you very much. we'll check in with you a lot this morning. let's turn to politics right now and new controversies for the trump white house. this morning, the president is facing criticism from his own supreme court nominee and new conflict of interest questions. this, as we await an appeals court decision on the controversial travel ban. we have it all covered, starting with peter alexander at the white house. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. jeff sessions will be sworn in as attorney general here at the white house, becoming the nation's top law enforcer. but it comes when trump is take shots at one of the pillars of this country, an independent judiciary, that administers the

rule of law. president trump got his man. >> the nomination is confirmed. >> reporter: the senate late wednesday confirming attorney general jeff sessions who has helped shape the president's policies including on immigration. sessions' opponents teeing off overnight. >> when jeff sessions was passed, it turned my stomach. he doesn't belong there. and i think a lot of republicans know it. >> reporter: the fierce debate over sessions, putting democrat elizabeth warren in the spotlight, after republicans formally silenced her for speaking negatively about her fellow senator. >> she was warned. nevertheless, she persisted. >> reporter: that quote becoming a rallying cry already on t-shirts. hillary clinton tweeting, she persisted, so must we all. but president trump's latest critic, his own supreme court pick, judge neil gorsuch. democratic senator richard blumenthal revealing gorsuch spoke to him about the president's criticism of fellow judges.

>> he certainly expr that he is disheartened by the demormallizing and abhorrent comments made by president trump about the judiciary. >> reporter: comments confirmed by a gorsuch aide. all of it following tough talk about the judges set to rule on on the president's temporary travel ban. >> that was disgraceful. courts seem to be so political. >> reporter: president trump says the legal issue should be simple. he acted within his power to protect national security. >> if you're a good student in high school or a bad student in high school, you can understand this. >> reporter: still, it's extremely rare for any president to criticize a court while a case is still pending. on twitter mr. trump called it an easy "d" meaning easy decision. but that phrase, with multiple potential meanings, immediately began trending. also this morning, new battle lines being drawn, pitting the white house against senator john mccain over a counter terrorism raid in yemen, the white house

has repeatedly called a success despite the death of navy s.e.a.l. ryan owens. >> when life is lost and wouldn'ted, i don't believe you can call it a success. >> i think everybody who undermines the success of that raid, owes an apology to the life of chief owens. >> reporter: mccain reject that rebu rebuke. insisting his record speaks for itself. just this morning, the president is tearing into that democratic senator who had the private courtesy visit with judge gorsuch. president trump writes, senator richard blumenthal who never fought in vietnam who he said had for years, major lie, now misrepresents what gorsuch told him? to be clear, a gorsuch associate confirms to nbc news that the judge says he was disheartened by trump's demoralizing comments.

now chuck schumer says gorsuch said roughly the same thing to him. matt? >> peter alexander at the white house for us. thanks very much. meantime, a woman in this country illegally for decades has become a new flashpoint in the nation's debate over immigration. nbc's gadi schwartz is here with us this morning. >> reporter: good morning, maria. guadalupe garcia de rayos came to the united states at 14. she was convicted of falsifying a social security number trying to get a job. yesterday, her two children, both born and raised here in the united states, watched their father face deportation as seven protesters were tried to prevent her transport from leaving. >> no one is illegal. >> reporter: overnight, a tense standoff between protesters and police, facing off over the arrest over 36-year-old guadalupe garcia de rayos, an undocumented immigrant, that's been living in the united states for 22 years.

garcia was arrested in 2008 during a workplace raid and convicted of felony identity theft because she had false papers. the now-married mother of two, continued living in arizona, checking in with immigration agents every six months. during her scheduled meeting wednesday, she was arrested when she or ride at the i.c.e. field office in phoenix. protesters stopping the van by standing in front of it. one man even clutching a tire. her children, looking at their mother through the window. her family says they are outraged. >> she's not a bad person. every year, year after year, she always checked in, and this never happened. >> here's where i went to school, where i met my wife, where we have our kids, where we started a family. here is where we grew up, where my kids grew up. they're american citizens. this is my country. it's our country. >> reporter: garcia de rayos was arrested just days after the trump administration brought in the definition of criminal alien. which aides say could apply to

those in the u.s. previous ord orders under president trump prioritized violent offenders for deportation. her husband says he has a message for president trump. >> if i had the person in front of me, i would say to be more compassionate. >> reporter: in a statement, an i.c.e. spokesperson said the deportation order was issued under the obama administration but they have not specified why it is being enforced now. back to you. >> thanks so much. the president is facing new questions about potential ethical conflicts after he lashed out at a popular department store on twitter. the reason, the chain's decision to drop his daughter's ivanka's line of clothing and accessories. nbc's white house correspondent kristen welker has the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, matt. you could call this the war over the wardrobe. president trump accusing retailer nordstrom of not

reupping his daughter's clothing line for political reasons. nordstrom says nothing could be further from the truth. they say it's about business, not politics. still, the controversy is heating up this morning. president donald trump's family ties under fire this morning, after the president took aim at nordstrom wednesday. tweeting from his personal account, my daughter ivanka has been treated so unfairly by @nordstrom. she is a great person. terrible. the flare-up comes a week after nordstrom said it would not order ivanka's selection this season. white house press secretary sean spicer digging in. >> i think it's less than a family business than an attack on his daughter. >> reporter: nordstrom insists, that's not true. writing in a statement they informed ivanka in january and saying the decision had nothing to do with politics. we've made this decision based on performance. still, the president of the company raised eyebrows sending out a memo last week about the

founder of nordstrom who immigrated to the u.s., saying, we will continue to value diversify, respect, and kindness. the company denies that was a political statement. and disputes not renewing ivanka's line was part of the #grabyourwallet campaign. orchestrated by marketing professionals and aimed at boycotting stores that carry the trump brand. and it's all providing fodder. pennsylvania senator, bob casey, immediately looping in the president's initial tweet to the office of government ethics. >> it's also the fact that you're in essence targeting a company, even as you're defending your daughter. >> reporter: ivanka trump gave up leadership of her company after the election in an effort to prevent conflicts of interest. her father has never fully divested from his empire. now ethics experts are weighing in. >> it's a pattern of incidents that have gone on now since he was elected where he's mingling his business, his family business, his personal business, with the business of the united states. >> reporter: for voters, heated

roads. many highways in the areas have been shut town. officials are warning residents and travelers to stay put and not risk getting swept away by the flood waters. i want to tell you about a bizarre incident at an nba game. this was last night during the new york knicks/l.a. clippers game. a former knicks player, charles oakley, who retired 13 years ago, found himself in the middle of a scuffle. reports indicate he was sitting a couple rows s behind the team owner, james dolan. and he began to heckle him. he was approached by security. and that's when things heated up. oakley shoved two security guards during the exchange. he was pulled out of the crowd, placed in handcuffs and arrested. he was charged with three counts of assault and one count of criminal trespassing. oakley was released around midnight. you don't see that every day. >> wow. mr. roker is back on a busy morning. >> that's right. let's look at other weather

albany. an intensifying low pressure system, and you get thunderstorm and thundersnow potential in that area. a snowstorm, you have weak updrafts and low-level clouds. however, when you have a storm like this, you have stronger updrafts and rising clouds. within that, you'll see electrical charges developing within that updraft. and so, that causes the thunderstorms. and really drives the snow rates up to four inches per hour, which we've seen in albany already. and look at the snowfall totals through tonight. boston, you're within 9 to 12 inches. even 16 inches of snow. same on the eastern end of massachusetts. long island. we have a wide swath of 8 to 16 inches of snow. and out west, more rain coming in. more heavy snow. and in fact, we've got snow melt and heavy rain. so, we have the potential of flooding at the foothills of the cascades. flood watches

the night before the storm, or in many places, the snow has not started. come out to your car and rub an onion along the window like this. or a potato, the same thing. what's happening is the sugar from the onion and the potato is creating a little barrier here. a little film on the window. and the sugar melts rather than the freezing. there won't be ice or frost on there. here's something else you can do. you take a sock -- you know what it is when your windshield is streaky. take a sock the night before and put it on to your windshield wiper like this. i promise i will get it. did it ten times in rehearsal. you stick the sock all the way on. all the way on like that. oh, my lord. like that. keep it up like this. and ice will not form there. and it will be -- protect you like that. now, one other thing you want to

do. if you forget to do all of that. you come out and have all of this. you get a spray bottle at home. two parts vinegar, one part water. just spray it all over your windshield like this. literally. if you don't have a scraper, spray it all over your windshield like this. and look how easily the ice will come off. i'm going to take this glove off. a credit card, a simple credit card, i got rid of my number you can't see it. the ice will come off because of the vinegar will come off. that's pretty cool. let's come around over here. something else to do the night before a storm. how annoying it is it when the ice is on the side windows. get a plastic baggy. do that. you can do that when you go to work. and this will prevent ice from building up there. hand sanitizer. if your lock gets frozen or the door handle gets frozen. the rubbing alcohol on this, if

let's start with the headlines of the day. here's your news at 8:00. >> reporter: we start with that wild winter storm that's walloping the northeastern part of this country. i'm craig melvin in central park this morning where folks could see somewhere between 8 and 12 inches of snow. schools have been shut down in new york city. schools have also been shut down in boston. many school districts in and around the northeast are on a delay, as well. meanwhile, the morning commute, quite treacherous. you can see the snow here in central park continuing to fall. that's been the case for a number of hours now. 2,300 snowplows are out on the roads. 315 tons of salt have also been deployed, as well. but here, perhaps, is the biggest part of this story. take a look at this flight aware misery map.

you can see the areas in red, the areas in red on this map, are the areas here in the northeastern corridor that are already being affected by the flight delays, the flight cancellations. more than 3,300 flights so far have been canceled. that is only expected to get worse as the day goes on. there's always, of course, that domino effect that we'll be seeing throughout the day with the airlines canceling and delaying more flights. you can see folks behind me at central park, undeterred. lots of folks running and jogging. and a number of dogs out and about. that's the latest from central park. matt, back to you. >> craig, appreciate that. thank you very much. going to turn to politics. this morning at the white house, donald trump swearing in jeff sessions as the new u.s. attorney general. sessions was confirmed by the senate last night after fierce partisan debate. meantime, president trump's

supreme court nominee sounding off about mr. trump's criticism of judges involved in the temporary travel ban case. nbc news has confirmed that neil gorsuch used the words disheartening and demoralizing when reacting to the president's comments. in houston what began as a dramatic police chase ended in a fiery crash. surveillance video shows a vehicle leaving the road and slamming into a gas pump at a service station on wednesday. the vehicle erupted into flames. the driver tried to run away but was captured. firefighters were able to safely put out the fire. police say the driver was wanted for questioning in an ongoing investigation but refused to pull over. coming up next on "pop start," tom hiddleston is going to explain why he wore that infamous shirt when he dated taylor swift. and desire, intimacy and their benefits on your brain. maria checked it out and it left her blushing. >> i can't wait for this.

here it is. we start with our brioche and our jam. and the first thing to do is to take about one-inch slices of bread. >> nice and thick. you have to get that jam in there. >> use a small knife. and we cut into the jam, about a half-inch down. and we do the same thing on the other side, creating like a pocket. >> how do you get the jam down in there? >> just stuff it. >> you don't have to be need? >> it can be as messy as you want it to be. and you do it on the other side. and then here they are already prestuffed. we need to put it into custard. eggs, cream, sugar and salt. got that in. >> put that in. you whisk that up? >> you whisk it up until it's light and pale yellow and looks combined. it looks fluffy. >> you're going to dredge the french toast in that? or pour it over the top? how do you work that? >> we actually dredge these in here. and count, 1 mississippi, 2 mississippi. >> both sides? >> both sides. they're already drenched.

we're going to put it into a hot skillet. >> is that butter in there? >> a little bit of butter in there. just a tiny bit. we're going to let it get a nice, golden sere. >> sometimes you make french toast, thick french toast. and it's gooey on the inside. and you cook this two different ways. >> you've got a nice sear on each side. this one has been going for maybe a minute or so. we're going to flip it. it's got a little bit of a sear. you think about a roast beef, you're getting the nice sear on the meat. >> that holds a lot of the flavor. >> you're going to take this pan. >> and put it in the oven. nice, hot oven. how long? >> five minutes. so it sets on the inside. it will have a nice custardy flavor. >> through the magic of television, this is what it looks like when it's finished. you want to pop it right there.

when you plate that up, you put a little whipped cream on that, and more of the swirled jam. >> that's it. >> talk about the hash you're making. >> it is the seasonal hash. we take some flour and potatoes. put them in the bowl with salt and spice. >> how is this going downstairs? >> the cauliflower thing is crazy. love it. >> so good. >> we got the cauliflower and the potatoes roasted separately. >> if you don't mind combining it in this bowl for me, we make the periperi sauce. weer. s, us unonions, spice and a little thyme. we pop it into the blender. we blend it up until it looks like this. >> that is your periperi sauce. >> i'll adjust it with salt and vinegar because i like the brightness to brighten up the

highway 17 that happened tuesday on the northbound side. caltrains brought in the spider excavator. it removes mud and debris from the top of the pile. one lane is open in each direction that is the same. cal tran says it will open monday. in the meantime, as far as the time line for the rain, we are going have a check of that after the break.

traffic good morning, i'm meteorologi meteorologist kari hall. the rain is closing in on the south bay as much as the east bay. the rain will move from the north to the south getting heavier with gusty winds. focus on the north bay where we have seen the highest rainfall totals and rain falling several hours now. moving to san rafael and napa,

expect more on the rain to continue at least through late morning and early afternoon. how is it looking on the roads? >> the right side, wet on highway 92. that's what's going on right now. i'm tracking what incident may be there. we have a slower drive. rain anywhere north of there hitting the north bay for hours. recovery for north 87, then a crash there past capital expressway cleared except the express lane. saratoga, an earlier crash there. the mudslides clearing at highway 17. back to you. >> wait until monday on that. thank you very much.

this morning on "today food," we team up with our friends from buzz feed, where we have this persian of a perfect valentine's meal. surf and turf for two with a potato on the side. we're going to slow this down

and show you how to make this dinner, step-by-step, momma. we're going to start with the turf. nice ribeye, beautiful. whatever cut you like. and a little oil, and salt enpepper. you have a good cut of meat, you season it. you have a nice skillet, put it in there. and sere that bad boy for about two to three minutes per side. as it's cooking, once you got it up, you're going to take this, and let it rest. and you're going to take -- i like the thin asparagus. you just cut it at the bottom. and you leave whatever oil or chunky bits are in there, and you sere that. the great thing about the thin asparagus, it cooks so quickly. boom, you're done. >> fantastic. >> and a little salt. a little pepper. >> you can never go wrong. more salt.
