commuters's cars because of recent rain. a fix could be a little bit later down the road. today in the bay starts now. mudslides, crumbling roads all a result of this storm. a break today from the storms. boy, they will ramp up once again, kari? >> yeah. we have four storms expected the next seven days. it is about to get really busy here. take a break, breathe, and enjoy the last a little bit of this mild weather and dry conditions too. as you step out the door, 50 degrees in san jose. 54 degrees in san francisco. getting the kids ready for the bus stop. mainly clear. feeling the milder temperatures. this will be the last dry day at recess. by the time they head home, a mix of sun and clouds and warm

temperatures. we'll talk about the timeline coming up in seven minutes. mike is getting an update on what's happening at the bay bridge. >> we'll show you our shot. the incline heading away from the bay bridge. the lights are out. it will be a safety issue for folks driving through the area. and spooky from what i understand. be careful on the san francisco side of the bay bridge. this has happened before. it happened a year ago and many other times throughout the 10 years i have been reporting traffic here. it is infrequent, but it does happen. caltrans is checking out how they can fix the lighting on the lower deck of the bay bridge. a good drive right now. thank you for keeping an eye on that.

5:01. we have been watching this closely. a hectic couple of days for people who had to evacuate near the oroville dam. this morning we know the mandatory evacuation orders were lifted. not everyone is racing to get hoe. here's why. 100 construction crews still racing against the clock to fix the problems at two spillways at the dam. federal emergency issued warnings. many are cautiously awaiting to returning home. for of them moving in the next week, which could complicate the repair process for crews. we're going to stay on top of this developing situation on air and online. pete suratos is there live. he will bring an update in the next half hour.

>> the second one signed to help 30 counties in the state. that includes here in the bay area. it made federal funding available for emergency work and repairs. dozens of people that are living and driving through walnut creek on 680 and 24 reported a lot of wind damage. crumbling roads are to blame. bob redell live with how the rain is contributing to the problem. good morning. good morning. southbound direction of 680 and both directions of highway 24, those roadways are breaking apart in this area where both

two roads meet. chp tells us 55 people since december have complained of damage to their cars, whether it be their wind schilds or car body themselves due to pieces popping up from the road. it is probably on a five-mile section of southbound 680 and one mile of section highway 24. local caltrans has submitted an emergency request for repairs. caltrans maintenance are sweeping the spots on a more regular basis, still leaving drivers frustrated. >> it kind of sucks. you either fix it and it happened again or just kind of leaving it. >> if you're a driver and you find your car is damaged and you think it is is due to the roads, you can file with caltrans. we put that link up on

nbcbayarea.com. bob redell, today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you so much. police in the east bay came up empty after chasing two people tied to an attempted robbery. police chafed two armed robbers who ended up ditching their car near the rock bridge bart station. they set up a perimeter. they never found the pair. perkily police officers saw the car leaving a robbery scenes on piedmont avenue. >> a teen was beaten with his own skateboard. it happened near the eastern entrance to golden gate park. investigators say the teenager got into a fight with two other men. that's when one of the victims took the skateboard and hit him on the head. new details in a homicide investigation in lupitis.

stewart bare now had a prior record and was wanted on a parole violation. . the 30-year-old fremont man was arrested after a chase. he is set to appear in court tomorrow afternoon. you may remember this situation from a few weeks ago. a suspected bank robber who led police on a wild chase and manhunt is expected to face a charge today. authorities say vargas ran into the woods. despite a manhunt he somehow managed to escape. 5:06 right now. this week turns are arguing over legal evidence in the robert durst murder case. he appeared in a los angeles courtroom yesterday. the judge heard arguments about whether or not to allow evidence surrounding a phone call that took place in 1982. prosecutors are trying to make

the case that durst killed his first wife cathy. a murder trial is not expected to start until next year at the earliest. new details about the owing land warehouse fire. they released 600 pages of city records. we are learning from unredacted reports the landlord. the documents show in 2014, he reported a fire in front of the property. three months later, a police report shows he and a tenant got into a fight over rent. both men were arrested. finally in march of 2015, police responded to a music party. the report says it didn't have proper permits to host parties. a major repaving effort is set to get under way next month at one of the run ways at sfo. it is run way 28-l.

asked who knew what when of the trump administration with the resignation of national security adviser michael flynn. congressional investigations are pending into this, both republicans and democrats say they want to get answers to the bottom of it. officially white house spokesman said legal counsel reviewed to see if flynn did anything wrong. according to spicer, he did not. but ultimately president trump believes the erosion there, because the vice president led donald trump asking for the resignation of flynn. the prime minister of israel benjamin netanyahu is is here to meet with president trump. it should be interesting the answers that come out. edward lawrence. back to you. thank you, edward.

new video this morning of a computer doing something that we take for granted. driving in the rain. and scott mcgrew. >> boy, do we drive in the rain a lot. snow, forget about it. that's impossible. when we do show you video of driving cars on the news, it is almost in the california sunshine. not today. the bay area company is showing off this video of one of their cars driving at night in the rain. you will notice this is sped up. because it wasn't driving very fast. this is in mountain view. this is our first look at the technology. the company has only been around since august. advocates gathered on capitol hill tuesday to talk about speeding up the laws. carmakers like ford want to get self-driving cars on the road in the next few years. but here congress or federal agencies like nhtsa won't have

attention to four storm systems set to move in over the next week. get ready for busy activities and a busy schedule over the next several days, at least for me. here's a live look at the bay bridge. beautiful shot. still dry. hey, look, the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. right now, as you step outside in san francisco, 54 degrees heading up to 64. and milder start compared to what we have had recently. heading up to 68 degrees in napa. concord, 66 degrees. livermore, 68. and 71 degrees in san jose today with a mix of sun and clouds. starting to see showers well to the north of us. that will dip south tonight into tomorrow. here's a look at the timeline. the hour-by-hour outlook shows clouds moving through today. lunchtime, maybe just a few peeks of sunshine. more clearing this evening. i imagine it will be a beautiful

is sunset with the clouds filtering the sun. rain moving in north to south early tomorrow morning with a line of gusty winds and heavy rain moving in during that early morning commute. here we are at 7:00. and widespread rain all across the bay area tomorrow. things tapering for the north bay. still spotty showers. we will have a chance of a few lingering showers as we go through the day. there will be storm systems moving in. looking at the amount of rain we could see with each of the storm systems moving in. we are looking at the possibility of about 3 to 5 inches of rain. here we go with the first one. the second moving in on friday. saturday, a little bit of clearing. then the third one moving sunday into monday. still raining on tuesday. as we head over to mike, waiting for sunrise at the bay bridge. >> we may have that the last few minutes. we see no problem as far as the

speed systems going all around the bay. that's great news. over the water, the bay bridge has a lighting issue. mild slowing. a little buildup from the bay bridge. our photographer is out there from the bay bridge toll plaza. and you see it moves well. over here we see light and power as well towards pressure island. you can see it lit up. it is still a factor. very dark out of san francisco to treasure island. the bay bridge toll plaza. fast tracking is starting to build. no problems as far as travel times getting there. an easy drive from highway 4 to the best of my knowledge bridge. nothing quite says romance like chalupas. also, nbc bay area responds.

nbc bay area responds to a walnut creek woman whose windows didn't pass inspection. >> and she couldn't get the company who installed the winds to fix the windows.

chris chmura brings us her story. good morning. one year ago the city of walnut creek expected joanne hernandez's newly installed home depot windows. the city said three did not meet egress requirements for the fire code. meaning she might have trouble getting out in an emergency. so joanne called home depot to tell them the windows failed. she had the company sent out a manager twice to look at the problem but nothing was ever done to correct it, to fix it. after several months, she reached out to us for our help. we contacted home depot, and it went to work immediately ordering new windows that would pass egress and arranging for installation as soon as possible. in a statement home depot told us, ms. hernandez's windows passed permitting, so we were surprised that they didn't pass inspection. regardless, we apologize for the delay in replacing them and

low 70s here. you see the clouds as we through the day. we will talk about when the rain arrives and the timeline at 5:38. now as we head over to mike, an update on the bay bridge. >> traffic flowing great around the bay. we have lane restrictions highway 17 to mudslides. highway 37, still have the flood anything novato at the top of your screen. the bay bridge toll plaza. the toll plaza itself has the backup. the street lighting is fine here. the metering lights have been turned on as well. on the bridge itself and treasure island tunnel we saw an issue with visibility, a problem with that. >> from your camera up on high we are down low. this is the bay bridge toll plaza. they are headed from oakland to san francisco. may not see the lights out on the bay bridge.

you can see them from our traffic camera. the lights are out headed east from san francisco to treasure island. caltrans tells us that the lights are back on. it could be a simple fix. they just don't know what the problem is at this point. this happened back in january of last year. here's how it looks from a driver's perspective. it was a little eeri coming over the bay bridge. lights were out over most of the western span and the tunnel. he was headed westbound 3:30 this morning. the lights aren't out for the whole span. is sunrise 6:58 this morning. as you head out this morning, you might miss this spectacle. it is is different from the time the lights went out in 2014. that time it was the bay art art installation that went dark for maintenance. this time it is the bridge

lights themselves caltrans and california highway patrol are working on this problem. they are aware of it. we haven't heard of any related traffic incidents because of it. they said there were flares and chp was directing people on one side of the bridge. >> we'll keep close tabs on that. breaking news. a homicide investigation is under way in san francisco after police found a person with severe head trauma inside one of the cars who ended up dying. you can see it hit a parked car. other details at this point still scarce. we have been in touch with police to ask what led specifically to the chain of events. all of this is happening near

van ness. a developing problem in oroville. finally some relief for thousands of people evacuated. but the worry isn't over just yet. mandatory evacuation orders lifted. some people are still not going home. here's why. another series of storms is approaching that could bring two to four inches over the coming days. yesterday federal emergency officials issued a disaster declaration. >> pete suratos joining us with a race against time to fix the issues before the rain comes in tomorrow. pete, what do you think? >> reporter: good morning to you, sam and laura. we talked to folks. they were definitely concerned as the storms are rolling in. a similar scene as the

excavators will start bagging up the boulders, and the bags of sand we showed you the last couple of days. they will do air drops into the emergency spillway. we'll show you some of the video. officials say more than 1,200 pounds of material per hour. more than 100 crews are on the ground. water levels have dropped. that's good news. the immediate danger of flooding has passed as indicated by the lifting of the mandatory evacuations. repairs were done on the spillway. but not everyone is ready to go home just yet. >> we realize we may have to leave again in a few days. but we'll be prepared. if they say go, we'll go. >> it is too hard for us to pack up and go when there's still

don't expect it too soon. >> we're not working 24/7. there are safety reasons why we don't work overnight. if there are more storms, we will have to suspend the work. >> safety concerns come after the death of a worker who was killed last week. a first of its kind partnership being rolled out of san jose's airport. the airport is going to work with the city of san jose and a workers organization group to help employees and their families to work through the hoops tied to citizenship. the airport is hosting its first ever citizenship workshop. >> a vote to apply for homeland security funding is on hold in san francisco. supervisors are debating a plan to apply for urban schild

funding. the money would go to disaster and terror training. urban schild promotes the militarization of local law enforce. supervisor cohen called to delay the vote to apply for funding which had been scheduled for the end of the month. an accused serial purse snatcher is back in court today. terrell anthony norman he targeted at least 14 women between october and december of last year. investigators say the robbers targeted older asian women. they were often walking outside shopping centers or stores. in some cases they were followed home and then attacked. police arrested norman back in january. he so far has not entered a plea. it is is 5:39 on this wednesday morning. with heavy rain well to the north of us. and this will be moving in as we go into early tomorrow morning. i want to show you the timeline

first wave of rain moves in. we will talk about how much rain to expect coming up in the microclimate forecast at 5:50. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. mike, kari, thank you very much. more gun violence to report out of chicago. this time a toddler and a pregnant woman were the victims of that violence. police say they were e in a car on the city's west side yesterday when someone opened fire at them. a 2-year-old boy and a man who is a known gang member died at the scene. authorities say this marks the third time in the last week that a child has been shot in chicago. so far this year, 50 people have been killed from gun violence. 700 died last year.

a woman has been charged with a hate cream, breaking out windows and a beacon. lead investigators could take the stand today. in walnut creek, cont in san francisco, firestation 36 on street will hold community safety and prevention fair starting at 9:00 this morning. >> remember the old noka phones that were all the craze in the early 2000s? they are making a comeback. they would be up veiled next week. it will cost $60. it is for the european market only right now.

sean spicer said president trump first found out about this on january 26th. that's when the department of justice made the white house aware of the phone calls. the fbi had the calls because they listen in to russian government calls both to and from. sources say mike pence didn't find out until february 9th. he he did so by reading bit in the "washington post". then 18 days later, president trump asked for and got flynn's resignation. two takeaways. one is pence was out of the loop. two, for 18 days, a man identified by the fbi as a security risk was at a high-level security meeting and meetings in the oval office. the big question now is will there be a further investigation? was flynn ordered to talk to the russians? speaker paul ryan said there should not be a further investigation because we need to get more information before

francisco. 68 will be the high in the peninsula. 70 in the south bay. also mid-60s for san francisco later today. at the radar, looking at the radar, now we see the rain well north of us. as it moves into the bay area around of quick moving heavy rain. especially during the afternoon. trying to make plans for the weekend, saturday there will be a break here. a few spotty light showers moving in. heavier rain between early sunday as well as monday. and then rain again on tuesday. once again, that is four storm systems moving in. i'll keep you up to date on what's going on and throughout that forecast. we will see more rain is and much cooler temperatures. as we head over to mike, a
