it is guaranteed to be a busy thursday. the first of four storms moving in? >> it moves in during the morning commute. not a lot of time here. wave after wave of rain in the forecast. getting you out the door with wet weather moving through pretty much all of the bay area. we are starting to see things calming down for northern sonoma county, drayton. this is santa rosa, the last a little bit of it. we will see breezy winds near napa, sonoma, fairfield. as well as san francisco, oakland, and parts of the east bay. we are seeing pockets of really heavy rain near orinda. moving off to the east near

brent wood and antioch, the rain getting heavier for the next few minutes fpltd. yellow on the radar. we are getting good coverage of rain as we start out early this morning. and this will be moving through quickly before we get ready for the next round of rain. we will talk more about that and what to expect coming up. heading over to mike looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. >> the volume of traffic is light. look at the volume of rain sweeping down across this shot. slick roadways. 580 at 24, we will focus on that. but i want to show you the blues causing ponding across the east

bay. orinda getting hit right now. san jose, we had lighter rain but the road was still wet. there is a crashed car off its wheels southbound 87 affecting one lane. >> going on right now, more concerns about highway 17. bob redell kicks off our coverage from the santa cruz mountains. >> as the rain moves in, the biggest worry is we would see more mudslides. >> reporter: you are correct. good morning to you, sam and laura. caltrans still trying to fix this mudslide that's been here a week now on northbound 17 here in scotts valley. the people who live up here in the santa cruz mountains are worried today's storms will

bridge more mud, rock and debris on the road. you will be surprised how many will be driving up and down bear creek road, for example. workers still trying to clean up the messes. they are stretched so thin, citizens are volunteering themselves to fix the potholes. they are using county-provided materials to stop the holes from developing into something worse. >> we are hraorlooking for the where you drop into it and your tire explodes. my family, personally, three tires so far this winter. >> if you're traveling to and from santa cruz through highway 17 starting today through friday, they will close off

ramps between 7:00 and 10:00 a.m. the past several days, if you are trying to go through scotts valley, the travel within the town is very bad. it is worse for people trying to get on northbound 17 getting back into the silicon valley. reporting live in the santa cruz mountains along highway 17, bob redell, today in the bay. awfully difficult last couple weeks. a system coming in oroville. this video shows the emergency spillway holding steady. but it also hasn't been tested yet with more rain. some people feel back-to-back storms could mean another evacuation.

>> reporter: a lot of people are preparing by stocking up on groceries. and they are also preparing to evacuate just in case. but take a look at why some people are still afraid this morning. through the darkness you can see 100,000 cubic feet per second spilling off that emergency spillway. a spectacular site, telling some people here to stay vigilant. some people are doing that by stocking up on food and other items. >> i'm going to the mountains where i live, and i'm going to stay there. >> the department of water resources is working to make the dam safer after discovering erosion on the main spillway. crews have been successful in

4:44. rain coming done. this is a live look at the golden gate bridge. >> tight grip on the steering wheel. a lot of heavy rain moving in. you see the rain drops on the camera lens. just a heads-up about that. we have had gusty winds. this is coming along with the rain moving out ahead a cold front. so our temperatures will be dropping. now it is is feeling mild in a lot of spots. with the wet road conditions and

the winds picking up, we will see this activity tapering off, moving quickly through the bay area this morning. we are already starting to see clearing for sonoma can county, moving out of santa rosa you are done for a while. rain moving through napa, sonoma for the next several minutes. valle vallejo, you're in for it for a few more minutes. pockets of heavy rain moving. hercules, richmond, heavy rain moving in, pockets of heavier downpours. expect the rain to be there getting even more intense within the next few minutes. heading over to brent wood, we are seeing a break with lighter showers. but then just to the west of you, that will be moving closer within the next few minutes in dublin, pleasanton, livermore. all green here with rainfall

rates at a quarter inch per hour creating standing water on the roadways. also for parts of the east bay, heavier pockets there indicated by the darker shades of green near san leandro. and heading down 880 near fremont, some yellows. very heavy rain just for the next few minutes. into the south bay now where we have a steady downpour coming in along with gusty winds, also raining for much of the south county and some of the heavier rain out of the santa cruz mountains we'll be moving into your direction. this is where we have seen some of the mudslide problems. that's where the most intense rain is moving through at this point. maybe bringing down a few more trees. you're seeing very heavy rain there moving up the peninsula with gusty winds and steady downpours for all the peninsula. still going to see times of heavy rain moving through and

tapering off from north to south as we go through the main morning commute. by the time most people get up and get out the door, this rain will be over with. we will get breaks in the clouds and a little bit of clearing. some mild temperatures. this next storm system moves in tomorrow morning from south to north. kind of a different direction of this. we will see a warm front lifted. that will bring in more heavy downpours. seeing these weather systems going back and forth, all tapping into deep subtropical moisture will bring in the potential of at least an inch or two of rain between now and friday night. the santa cruz mountains looking at another few inches of rain. that will causality of problems because the soil is already loose. we're also adding in wind speeds at about 20 to 25 miles per hour. maybe a little bit higher with some of those gusts. so high surf advisory continues today. that will kick up some of the

waves from 13 to 15 feet. coming up in our next half hour we'll be checking in with vianey. we will tell us what the conditions are like at pacifica. what does it look like? >> traveling through oak land and berkeley and hayward. so far no problems for highway 84 along the canyon there. we will track that as well as highway 17. we do have a crash in the lane.
