a construction crisis high a top a sky rice in san francisco is stable. they will attempt to move the massive piece of equipment. you're watching today in the bay. morning-- tracking the fir offos we want to get straight to our live doppler radar tracking the first of four storm systems to hit the bay area. we're in a microclimate weather alert. the storm will make for a wet andy commute. >> we are stationed across the bay area this morning to make sure you're ready as you head out the door or taking the kid to school. this is highway 17 in santa cruz mounins as well as the oroville dam and pacifica. we're spread out 6th where for you. very good thursday morning to you. i'm laura seay cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we are vlad you're with us. we know it's bumpy getting to work. >> that's okay.

we're going to get through it together. kari has a look at the radar. the first of four storms headed our way. >> this is a quick one and done. as you get up, getting the kids ready, make sure they have the rain gear. we will see the system quickly moving out of the bay area for the time being. we are tracking lingering light showers through the north bay and moving out of san francisco right now. but the pluck of the heavy rain has shifted off to the south and east. as we zoom in on the north bay, san rafael seeing lingering light showers moving in. and also the bay bridge, heading over towards oakland light rain. just a few minutes ago it was coming down really hard. livermore and pleasanton still seeing light rain. in oakland, you will get clearing here. it has really been pouring there. early this morning we are still

seeing spotty showers continuing for the south bay. a little bit heavier as you head through morgan hill, san martin and gilroy. santa cruz mountains, we have been watching this very closely. a lot of rain still pouring there where we will have the potential the next couple of days of seeing another potential for rain. expect the rain to move in in the next few minutes. the heaviest rain moving out. that's already caused problems on the roadway. let's head over to mike with the crash and the video. >> exactly. look at this video earlier on 880. the status is still the same. the rig is still on its side blocking the right lane. the driver of that rig was taken from the scene with major injuries. we are tracking that situation.

pretty difficult thursday commute for most of the bay. northbound 880, traffic jams from north of the coliseum all the way to fifth avenue off-ramp. we just got word about three minutes ago that one more lane was open. just your slow lane is blocked. let me show you the distribution of your travel times. there is about a half hour faster for 580 than 880 right now. west 580, blocked all lanes. flooding and a crash. no traffic right now. we'll show you more coming up. back to you. all right. we'll look forward to that. live to highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains right now. the morning commute certainly already still impacted by the mudslides. caused by all the recent rain

storms. now there are worries there could be additional mudslides as the next round of rain moves in. traffic already moving through smoothly through there but slowly. it is moving in one direction. off ramps will be closed to prevent drivers from trying to take shortcuts through the city. kari mentioned the fact that the north bay has gotten pelted with rain. this is a traditional trouble spot. crews have been work to go make repairs to highway 37 in novato. this is from yesterday. it is still shut down this morning. they are doing the very same thing at the rowville dam this morning. this is a live look as the crews try to make repairs to the dam. the spillway is holding. but the danger is not over yet. and here is where the situation stands at this hour. 100,000 cubic feet of water is

spilling off the emergency way 6th second. we are expecting two to four inches of rain as the first storm moves in. the good news, it is a colder storm. 200,000 people who live near the bam were ordered to evacuate but they have been allowed back home. pete suratos is monitoring the levels as back-to-back storms move in. the very latest on the spillway concerns coming up at 6:35. in the meantime, happening right now, workers heading back to the high rise in san francisco after very tense hours yesterday after a platform failed. >> today in the bay kris sanchez live explaining what crews will attempt to do today. good morning, kris. let's start by saying the danger here is secure. it is closed between first and

second. all the work will be happening high a top the high rise that is under construction. it threatened to come down, bringing with it a concrete wall. one of the supports under 19,000 pound concrete failed, destabilizing. you can see that on nbcbayarea.com. workers at that point called 911. it took crews three hours to stabilize and secure the pump. it was seven hours before folks could get back in. >> i'm late for work. and i just videotaped this. nobody said nothing.

years. failing at @ "new york times" and others must apologize. critics point out this is a contrast to his presidential campaign when he professed his love for wiki leaks which was leaking thousands of hacked hillary clinton e-mails. >> the latest fallout from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who want to know what president trump's to russia actually are. he was asked during a joint news conference yesterday with the israeli prime minister. >> president trump talking more about flynn stepping as some are raising more concerns. that includes senator lindsey graham. >> i think it is very, very unfair what's happened to general flynn, the way he was treated and the documents and papers that were illegally -- i stress that, illegally leaked. >> it is very serious. it could be a game changer.

moving off toward the east. still lingering light showers through the 8:00 to 9:00 hour. quickly seeing this activity tapering off with breaks in the clouds as we go through the day. be prepared for a wet and windy morning. but then a warm and sunny afternoon for many spots. this is our period of dry weather before the next round of heavy rain moves in. look at the timeline tomorrow morning at 7:00. another wave of some rain moving in. we will talk more about this. and if you're getting ready to head to the sierra, i'll have a look at that forecast in four minutes. mike is tracking three crashes. three crashes. that's as much as you see on this map. we have crashes all over the wet roads, the bay area, peninsula and south bay. light traffic starting to build right now. we have this getting over to the richmond center, ran raphael bridge. west 580, regatta is completely closed. a number of crashes.

chp says that's closed. over here, we're looking at getting for the bay bridge via the nimitz. overturned rig is on the shoulder. we have a jam from the coliseum. a half hour less travel time for 580. you have to get to and from the alternate freeway. you see the difference in travel times as well. one other spot. watching the tri-valley southbound, 680. a couple crashes coming down. a shoutout. we're looking at two lanes blocked southbound 680, at 84. i'm presuming the person who september that tweet was the passenger in the vehicle. back to you. >> play it safe. we enjoy hearing from you, but please play it safe out there.

let's get a live look outside right now. san francisco, lingering light showers. heaviest rain moved on past you. temperatures at 62 degrees. we will see the temperatures holding steady. and partly cloudy later on this afternoon. tomorrow, another round of rain. it moves in and will be off and on throughout the day tomorrow. and this weekend, the third storm system arrives sunday. there's your window on saturday to try to get things down done. a live look at san jose with wet. looking at the radar, the heaviest rain shifted over towards the east, sacramento, central valley. we are going to continue to see lingering light showers through most of the morning commute. once again, the heaviest rain moved out. still raining in san rafael.

the marina district as well. then we will head of to the east bay. a few more breaks in the downpours. starting to see more of a spotty light rain off and on. you have to turn on the windshield wipers, turn it off, turn it back on. it is still raining in hayward. you're getting clearing in san leandro. another quick wave moving through fremont. we are taking a break showers. going into the south bay, finally starting to see the rain tapering off there. it is is still continue gilroy. you are seeing steady downpours and rolling out of the santa cruz mountains off to the east. it is starting to break up a little bit here. still looking at the concerns of more mudslides the next couple of days. the peninsula not raining right now. it is is in redwood city.

san mateo, lighter moving in. another storm tomorrow tomorrow. and several more lined up to the west of there as we go into the next several days. just to show you what to expect. this one saturday. still lingering light showers in the morning. the afternoon is looking good. second system late sunday, monday, with heavy rain and gusty winds. and the fourth storm system moves in between monday and tuesday. we're still going to see more active weather in the forecast. i just tweeted out the weekend forecast. check that out. as we head over to vianey arana, let's see what conditions are looking like in pacifica. >> reporter: well, kari, i'm having to hold on to my hat and the photographer holding onto the gear. we are still seeing the waves crashing up on the pier at 10 feet.

13 to 15 feet with breakers at 20 feet. the coast guard said go ahead is and keep an eye out along the delta region for any debris we see following the series of storms across the bay. and small craft, if you do own any of those as well. keep a close eye. the storm is moving quickly. expected to peak mid morning. i will talk about how much we are expecting and of course the advisory and the winds at 6:45. but first i'm going to send things over to mike for a check of the roads. we're going to look over here at the maps showing you wet roadways. ponding and puddling. slick conditions. we still have crashes that continue to be a problem. westbound 580.

days in oroville. crews making repairs to the damaged emergency spillway. >> nearly 200,000 people could fail, unleashing a massive wave of water on the people who live close to the dam. officials say people may have to leave again. >> as far as the conditions have changed since our last live shot, heavy rain and wind coming down. it is a bit cold out here. as far as progress goes, we see the excavator all week long getting them prepared dropping

them off to the emergency spillway. here's where things stand as of this morning. we know the lake levels are 26 feet below the emergency spillway. and 100,000 cubic feet. we could see later today. crews are keeping an eye on both spillways their this is seeing a good amount of erosion. the main focus is on the emergency spillway. 200,000 residents were evacuated earlier this week. they are still staying prepared. i'm definitely ready. i want them to be as safe as possible. i'm going to the mountains and i'm going the stay there. i just don't feel safe.

notifications when rain is within 30 minutes of your location. happening right now, a high-wire construction act out 30 stories above downtown san francisco. a live look at the scene where crews are in the process of removing a nearly 10-ton pumping station disabled when a platform support at that high-rise building failed 30 stories high yesterday. when you went to bed, there were evacuation orders in place. late last night they were e lifted. this happened between first and second streets. this is what work looked like last night from nbc sky ranger. the problem led to a tense situation, including a six-hour-long evacuation. 16 buildings were evacuated. i was actually out in this neighborhood standing around trying to figure out what was happening. once the area was cleared, experts came in to stabilize the area of a pump and a crane

sitting on top of the building. the area is all clear. the side treated is expected to remain closed until crews can clear out the pumps. kris sanchez has been reporting live from the scene. >> new details in the killing of kim jong nam. a third suspect was arrested in connection with that killing. two women and a man are behind bars. jim congress n kim jong nam was poisoned by you two female assassins. he lived abroad for years. 6:41. new video overnight that you just have to see. dangerous fire. thankfully no one was injured. this is 50 miles east of asset. it caught fire, triggering multiple explosions. at 7:00 last night, leaving thousands of people in the dark.

supermarkets will also close. >> 6:46. also happening today, a group of stanford students will demand the school and campus serve as a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants. >> 6:47 on your thursday morning. the president is expected to put an end to a rule of people being mentally unfit from the social security administration from obtaining a gun. scott mcgrew found people were not happy to see it go. >> the rule was written by the obama administration. we expect president trump will stop that rule from ever taking effect.

this is what it will probably look like. this was tuesday. in that case, we're not talking about the president signing a law. what he is doing there is something called the congressional review act. it's a shortcut. they used it tuesday. they will use it again today. the rule they are getting rid of forced the social security administration to turn over a list of names of people who were not mentally well enough to manage their own social security paychecks. turn that over to the background check system f. you're not well enough to manage money, you can't buy a gun. the nra was against that. so too was the aclu, the national autism organization. why? well, because all kinds of mental problems are listed as reasons to prevent gun ownership. obvious ones like schizophrenia.

but also eating disorders and autism. all groups said if you want to take away somebody's constitutional rights, you have to have due process through the courts. more than just the guy at the social security administration making a decision. interestingly, the rule probably wouldn't have made us any safer anyway. mentally ill people are not particularly dangerous with guns, no more than the population. some mentally ill people are less likely to use a gun in a crime. i'm going to tweet out the study so you can read it for yourself. we have asked the white house and the senate majority leader when we might see the signing. we think it is going to come today. it is possible, sam and laura, the president could sign this one away.

and the temperatures holding steady in the lower 60s. going to see the weather continues. a little bit of a break for the weekend on saturday with third storm system with the fourth moving in on sunday. as we look outside at san jose, weather conditions improving as far as the road. not seeing the heavy rain we saw an hour ago moving through. looking at the heaviest rain shifting toward the valley. there are still some very heavy downpours there. more of a lighter shower here in the bay area. a closer look at the north bay. showers moving through marin county and the richmond, san rafael bridge. san francisco, across the bay bridge as well you are seeing some of the rain extending

toward oakland. as you head through orinda and ra flafayette. getting the roads a little bit of a chance to dry out. seeing some of the water going back into the storm drains. we are seeing a break in the rain in hayward. union city with lighter showers moving through fremont. as we go into the south bay, still some light rain here right near downtown. but then also seeing breaks in south san jose, gilroy, morgan hill, over towards the santa cruz mountains. still raining but not as heavy as we saw earlier. up into palo alto, a break in the rain. showers to the west of you. and rain near the coastline. getting a look at pacifica, we're going to get a closer look. the rain is taking a break. let's see what ground conditions

look like and the waves with the forecast from vianey. you know, kari, i am definitely happy that the rain has finally stopped. because i'm take wind. wind and rain, that's a whole different combination. the sun has definitely come up. you see the waves crashing. we have managed to see consistent winds blowing at 15, 16 miles per hour. we have the anemometer heavy which measures wind speed. the winds are dying down a bit at 5 to 6 miles per hour. it picks up as the gusts come in. the next few hours, that's exactly what we will see. by 11:00, a.m. gusting 18 to 20. areas like san jose and of course san francisco, they are going to be different. by 3:30, it completely dice out. by tomorrow, we will see wind
