of weeb seeing a lot of ponding water, soggy roads, and still seeing a lot of the lakes and rivers kind of gushing right now with water, but we are seeing the last of that storm system kind of make its way east, which means it's leaving behind overcast skies. some areas a chance of scotte d scattered showers but breaking apart as we speak. in the next few hours, seeing peeks of sunshine. east bay, 54. north bay 50. not necessarily cold on this saturday morning, but here's a live look at that radar. over the past two hours. if we kind of zoom in, you can actually see the majority of that storm move off the east to the north bay not really seeing too much rain right now, and if we kind of move towards the south bay and san francisco area, still seeing a few spotty showers here and there and still seeing moderate downpours near monterey and, of course, further down near santa cruz as well.

so we are expecting this to kind of move out, which is going to make way for, as kira mentioned, the one break we're going to catch before we see another storm system move in, and for that it looks like as of now that it could be arriving as early as sunday. i will have a closer look at that timeline and what you can expect as well as those temperatures, tracking several storms on the way yet again. >> wow. in a little bit you'll give us that full, when the storm returns droun. for now, enjoy saturday while it lasts. vianey, thanks. the latest storm we talked about has been packing a punch causing major damage not only here in the bay area but across california. on the left, trees down across the bay area and on the right, an incredible sight. to cars swallowed in a sinkhole in studio city in southern california. back here at home, in the south bay, the storm downed power lines and trees and once again this morning keeping a close eye on the rising waters of the anderson reservoir. this is what it looked like late last night.

gushing water at the bottom of the anderson dam. from a relief valve for the reservoir nearing 100% capacity. it's only six inches away from flowing over the spillway for the first time in 11 years which could mean flooding in nearby creeks. >> we're out here about 26, 28 years ago, when the spillway first went over. we came out here and it looked like niagara falls. >> the latest storm toppling trees throughout the south bay like this one on park lane in santa clara. it was a close call. >> very happy that it fell to the street, because my bedroom is right there, and my partner was still in bed when it fell. so it could have been a disastrous situation. and this massive eucalyptus went crashes down on park avenue and another hitting a house, crushing that pickup truck. no one was hurt. we've seen a lot of damage this winter, but nothing like

this. this is along interstate 15 in san bernardino county. did you see that? the rain-soaked freeway collapsed, and that fire truck completely swallowed. luckily, firefighters already had gotten out of it before that happened. >> whew! and shock and surprise there as a car disappears into a 20-foot sinkhole in southern california. the whole -- actually two cars. it happened in studio city. good news, firefighters were able to rescue the drivers. no one was hurt. and a look now at the los angeles river rising after all of that heavy rain. in san bernardino county, a massive landslide. the length of three football fields. video captured just as it came down. look at that. there is concern that this weekend's continuing storm could make things worse in that area. and despite the continuing storms california state water

the gunman who terrorized an oakland neighborhood has died. just yesterday morning he shot at homes and police. "today in the bay" sheryl hurt spoke with the neighbor in the center of the attack. >> i screamed immediately to him, get down. get down. jesse's shooting. >> reporter: words andrea jones told her 6-year-old son when she says her neighbor started shooting through her window friday morning. >> yes. that is my house, that has the garage door, the front door, the address, and many things were painted. >> reporter: some of the pictures crude and obscene. jones says the man moved in next door two and a half years ago into home formerly owned byes hibs grand parents. his grandparents treated her like family and he's been ko cordial, also aloof, cool. >> reporter: the university of michigan police investigated him for stalking a fellow law

student. the student complaining he wouldn't stop e-mailing, texting and trying to contact her. he was never charged with a crime. but he has been known to brandish his rifle in the neighborhood. >> i knew that he was the person who had shot the cars in our neighborhood. i knew that he shot a car that was occupied with a sleeping man. >> reporter: we talked to that man friday night and he showed us where he said the bullets hit. jones says she reported his actions to police, and she believes that may have played her his target. >> my heart is breaking for this whole situation. i didn't think that he was even capable of this. i didn't think he was capable of this. >> reporter: in oakland, cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. and police are investigating strange reports of people being shot with blow gun darts. two men were hit with darts on meridian avenue in san jose. one attack happened near hillsdale and the other near ridgewood. police say one of the victims was shot in this parking lot around 7:30 thursday night, as

welcome back at 7:10 on your saturday morning. a microclimate weather alert. scattered showers for the bay area the next couple of hours, and then clear for the rest of the day today. before another storm hits tomorrow. so enjoy it while it lasts. could president trump call in the national guard to help deport undocumented immigrants? the associated press has uncovered an internal memo that has the trump administration now on damage control. according to the a.p., the department of homeland security is considering a proposal to use national guard troops to crack down on immigrants in 11 states, including here in california. while the white house quickly responded saying, it was a very early draft, and the idea was quickly rejected. and then there's russia. calls are growing louder for an

bay, 53 degrees. good morning. and along the peninsula, 48 degrees. tri-valley, about 46 degrees and near san francisco, ebb jnjoyin milder temps. 52. you're not going to need a heavy jacket and you may even be able to put away your rain boots, at least the next couple hours. live look at doppler radar. we can see the storm system tracking east. this is that same storm system that also brought a massive amount of rainfall to southern california. now, thankfully we are expecting to catch a slight break from the rain. you can actually see this right now kind of moving east. north bay not catching too much rain right now. seeing spotty showers as it begins to break apart. we'll still seeing a very, very light, light rainfall along half moon bay area, and also out near santa cruz, monterey as well an spotty showers.

fast-forward, see the rain make an exit. however, we remain under a high surf advisory because we're seeing breezy to windy conditions until about noon. because the wave heights are about 18 feet, and we've been seeing pretty tall waves along the coastline. it's just, be careful out there. still not going to be a very good beach day. today's forecast, overall pleasant after that rain moves out we are expecting a high of about 55 degrees. palo alto, high 58. san jose, high 56, san francisco, and unfortunately those overcast skies are expected to remain. but we will see peeks of sunshine ahead of that second storm system. so let's talk about the next couple of hours. by about 9:30, you can actually see the majority of the rain has finally moved east leaving behind a lot of these cloudy skies, a lot of that cloud cover, and, of course, we are going to see some breezy to windy conditions that will remain. but fast-forward through tonight and into sunday morning. ahead of that second storm, or third storm system, rather, we will see a trough that begins to

bring rain along the north bay first. starting napa, then san francisco, along the coastline, we'll start seeing rain at about 5:30. this is ahead of that atmospheric river slamming the bay area by sunday night into monday morning. so fast-forward through 10:00 a.m., and an areas near san mateo, walnut creek and oakland begin to see rain, but look at about 4:00, 5:00, still seeing a possibility of seeing moderate to heavy downpours. we will probably keep that icon of rain for tomorrow throughout your entire sunday. but this is where the heaviest downpours come into play. monday at about 2:00 a.m., you can actually see the orange and red. where we see a bit of a bull's-eye also in the napa area as well, and this is actually that strong atmospheric river that originally was very focused in southern california yesterday. now we'll see the atmospheric river pounding over the north bay monday night into monday morning as well. sunday -- monday, rather, 7:00 a.m., look at this. you can see livermore area and san jose, south bay, really getting slammed at about 7:00

little bit dry this morning ahead of a break in the rain. before it comes back. another weather roller coaster. thanks for joining us on this saturday morning. i'm kira klapper. vianey arana has a look at that microclimate forecast for us. >> yes. yesterday was raining all day, it felt like. >> right. >> really was. didn't feel like it was raining all day and today, see a few spotty scattered showers. the reason we're unter a microclimate weather alert, still seeing slick road conditions and of course that ponding water. but temps aren't too bad. peninsula now waking up to 48 degrees. south bay a mild 53. tri-valley 46 degrees. a few scattered showers here and there. san francisco, overcast skies, 52 degrees, and east bay, 54 as well. a live look at doppler radar. we've seen in the last two hours, that storm system start to trek east. what brought the scattered showers, but we're starting to dry out and will continue to see that storm system make its exit over the next couple of hours,

text. referring to failed legislation by a jewish-american. peskin says he takes it personally and is demanding an apology. >> when the mayor is talking about a jewish-american person and using nazi terms, it -- it chills me to my core. >> reporter: the peskin-backed legislation that triggered this would have made witnesses testifying before the government audit to remain under oath. perjury could result in punishment. what we got was a statement from mayor lee's spokesperson deidre hussy when read in part, mayor lee apologizes for inappropriately and insensitively using the word gestapo to describe supervisor peskin's failed legislation. it goes on to talk about the concerns the mayor has with that particular legislation calling it mccarthiesque and stating that the mayor reached out to jewish and faith communities to apologize for the inappropriate

expect over the next couple of hours? much like the radar, you can see the storm begin to move east and we've seen a few scattered showers overnight and will continue to see a few spotty showers here or there left over from that storm system last night that brought a lot of rainfall to not just north bay but saurn california as well. san francisco seeing partly cloudy skies. half moon bay, a few scattered showers and the monterey area and santa cruz mountains, expect to see a few more showers over the next half hour. as the system tracks east, partly cloudy skies and a fairly dry day ahead, although re still have a high surf advisory, another reason we're under a microweather storm alert. a lot of saturation and the wet roads early on and ponding waters. be careful out there. seeing tall waves along the coastline, about 18 feet. talk about this timeline. look at this. by about 9:30, we'll begin to see mostly cloudy skies, and the remainder of that last storm

system will clear out making way for what could be a very nice saturday. so make sure you head outdoors because if we fast-forward through saturday overnight into early sunday morning, we are seeing that third storm system forming just off the pacific so that trough will bring you showers early on to areas near the north bay. napa, point reyes, san francisco and san mateo along the peninsula expect shower as early as 5:00, 5:30 a.m., and fast forward through the early morning commute between 6:00 and 7:00 a.m., begins to track east as well by about 10:30, continuing to see shower near napa. san francisco as well. a few spotty showers near the south bay and sunday afternoon at about 5:00, 6:00 and 7:00 we'll continue to see the scattered showers early on as well, before we begin to see this atmospheric river really come in to play monday morning. right, smack dab in the middle of that early morning commute on monday. so by about 2:30 a.m., look at this.

livermore area, san jose, expecting to see moderate to heavy downpours as well as pretty gusty winds as well. could have anywhere between 50 miles per hour. also expecting to see rain, santa rosa, point reyes as well and fast forward. look at this by 7:230 a.m., bull's-eye area, palo alto area as well. definitely look ahead and take extra time monday morning. with all of this incoming rain we've been keeping a close eye on reservoirs and of course the river stages as well. it looks like we mentioned earlier anderson is over capacity at 100.3%. lexington, also over capacity at about 101%. of the ub is reservoir, 103%. keeping a close eye on this with the incoming storm sunday. also tracking another storm expected to come in on tuesday night into wednesday, which should be the last of the series of storms, hopefully, for the next couple of days as well. here's a quick check of what you can expect as we head into

research on primates. here's bigad shaban. >> reporter: when can comes to monkey, striking resemblances to humans make them prime suspects. the xpeerts are largely funded with your tax dollar, and regulated by the usda, but earlier this month, the agency pulled a ton of data off its website. tonight we'll show you what the federal government doesn't want you to see. meet maya. an 11-year-old rhesus mckach monkey that used to be subject of research experiments in california. now each time he makes eye contact with a human -- he immediately motions to bite his arm. it's a behavior some believe he developed while inside the lab that he left four years ago. >> it never completely goes away i don't think. >> reporter: this man runs mindy's memory, primate sanctuary in oklahoma. rehabilitation former monkeys

and pets and says many show emotional and physical scars. >> once in captivity, affected from it for the rest of their lives. >> reporter: the sanctuary is home to 80 primates from across the country. >> about a quarter of the monkeys come from california. >> reporter: nationwide research labs house more than 100,000 primates. at least 25,000 used for experiments that can cause pain or distress. of those primates, about 740 are never given any form of pain medication, since that could interfere with the reez searcre >> this is surgery, implants in skulls and craniums. >> reporter: bob ingersoll has been studying primates for 40 years. >> it's not as if i don't think that medical research has ever been helpful, because it has. 30 years ago you might have had to do that because there wasn'ter in method on the horizon to get you there. but there is now. >> reporter: ingersoll advocates for alternatives like this research out of uc-berkeley, where scientists created real

living, beating human heart tissue. it's all connected to a computer, and could eventually be used to test the impact of drugs in humans. doing away with one major need for primates. but not all, according to some scientists. >> those who say that the use of animals in research and non-human primates in research is unnecessary, are simply wrong. >> reporter: this doctor is the associate director for science policy at the national institutes of health. which funds much of the country's primate research. she spoke to us from nih headquarters in maryland. >> biologically they're very similar to humans. >> reporter: primate testing is credited for helping develop the polio vaccine, insulin for diabetes, help site is b vaccine and treatments for parkinson's disease to make a few. researchers at duke university say primate testing allowed them to develop prosthetic arms and legs communicating directly with the human brain. >> areas in which we just haven't developed alternative

technologies that allow us to replace non-human primates. >> reporter: you don't believe the science is there yet? >> the science is not there yet. >> reporter: critics point to problems how researchers are caring for the animals not including federal facilities, 159 preemate rhee search centers throughout the u.s. 69% cited over the past three years with 77 violations directly impacting the health of animals. uc-davis is home to one of the largest research centers in the country with more than 6,000 primates. >> that's absolutely unfathomable. a huge amount of animals. >> reporter: lindsay ruben and other critics of the university's primate program stage silent protests each month to raise awareness. >> we feel the science they're doing can't be trust fundamental they can't keep the primemates safe alive and keep them from escaping. >> reporter: the uc-davis primate center has been cited 13 times in the past three years and understand you are fro
