these agencies and say you have a mission. there are laws that need to be followed. you should do your mission and follow the law. >> reporter: the president also reaching out to minority groups visiting the smithsonian's african-american museum and denouncing the rise of anti-semitic incidents across the country during an exclusive interview with craig melvin. >> will you denounce anti-semitism once and for all just to clear up the confusion? >> i do all the time. i do all the time. i think it's terrible. i think it's horrible. whether it's anti-semitism or racism or any -- anything you want to think about having to do with the divide. >> reporter: meanwhile, new scrutiny this morning with the administration eyeing the possibility of rolling back some federal guidance that requires the nation's public schools to allow children to use bathrooms and locker rooms to match their gender identity. the white house hasn't officially commented on that. all this as the administration is working to unveil that new so-called travel ban executive order. our newest survey monkey poll

shows 50% approve of the executive order temporarily banning citizens from majority muslim countries. >> kristen welker, thank you very much. let's focus more on the immigration policies. could they lead to mass deportations? as w we're going to get a fact check in a moment. here first are some of the basics. there are an estimated 11 million people in the united states illegally. of that number experts say 800,000 have committed crimes here. >> so can you realistically deport that many people? the obama administration deported more than 2.5 million people. that's the highest of any prior presidency. now let's get our fact check. good morning. >> good morning. >> chuck schumer of new york said this now sets the table. these new policies for the mass deportations that many people feared in a trump presidency. is he right? >> no. we don't know exactly what's going to happen. this is certainly a bigger hammer. but how hard they swing it is

not detailed in these policies. there is more they can do to deport more people faster. >> one of the big aspects of this has been the so-called dreamers. these were the children who were brought into this country illegally by their parents but who did nothing wrong on their own and are now living here during the campaign then-candidate trump say he was going to crack down on this. now he says it's a difficult situation for him. what are the new guidelines telling us about that? >> this is a fascinating piece of this. a big part of the campaign. these guidelines exempt these children who were brought here. that basically means for now the obama era policy stays in place. this is executive done by the president only. that could change any time. >> so one of the terms we've been hearing over the last 24 hours or so is expedited removal which means this is going to happen quickly for people who fall under the new policies. if i'm already in the criminal system, do i lose my due process rights? >> you probably have less

rights. this is done in a civil way. what that basically means is the government doesn't have to do as much to make sure it's doing the process right or proving its case. because you don't have as many rights to be here in the first place. >> and the expedited removal was under obama, it was anybody you found within 14 days and a hundred miles of the border. now it's anywhere you find them up to two years. >> that's right. this is one of several ways that this set of policies tries to give those border agents, i.c.e. agents, and even now even more local police opportunities to catch and deport people. that is a big process. it can be expensive. typically not everyone that we have undocumented in the country is thought of as a priority for that. and that is still where the rubber meets the road. over the long haul, how many people do they really want to deport. as you pointed out, 2.5 million-plus in the last administration. >> ari, thank you very much. we are now learning more about the deadly attack on the

half brother of north korea's leader kim jong-un. police revealing two suspects had coated their bare hands with poison as they identify two more people being sought in the case. we have the latest overnight developments. janice, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. this case continues to twist and turn with revelations today that the ties to north korea appear even stronger. the murder of kim jong-nam now reaches into north korea's embassy. a senior official wanted for questioning. what position does this person hold at the north korean embassy? >> he's the second secretary. >> reporter: allegedly spotted in airport security video the same day the north korean dictator's half brother was killed. police also want to talk with this employee of north korea state owned airline. and a fifth suspect. a north korean they think is in malaysia. while four other north korean

men are believed to be back in pyongyang. north korea's ambassador here said nothing today about the suggestion a senior diplomat may somehow be involved in a mystery that for ten days has added new twists and characters that played out in realtime in airport security video purportedly showing the apparent attack. police say the two women in custody who appear to wipe something on kim's face knew it was poison. >> the indonesian did it first. and followed by the vietnamese lady. wipe the face of the deceased and after that they went away. they were instructed to clean their hands and they know it is toxic. >> reporter: contradicting claims the women were duped into thinking they were part of a tv prank. meanwhile at the morgue where kim jong-nam's body remains, they've had to step up security since an apparent break in.

as for that dna sample, police say they've asked north korea to get one from kim jong-un or any other family member to confirm it really is the one-time heir apparent to the regime who's at the heart of this mystery. matt, willie, back to you. >> all right, janis, thank you very much. now to the emergency situation playing out in california where rising flood waters have led to new evacuations there. and al's got an eye on that for us this morning. >> the good news, the rain is letting up. but the bad news is the runoff from all the rivers and creeks causing massive flooding. air rescues, people have had to be brought out by boat, by all sorts of deep water rescue teams. and the waters are going to stay at this level for at least the next 24 hours. but the good news is they will start to drop. here's what's going on right now. unstable air off the pacific, moisture, and lighter showers in the mountains. but much less rain out there. the other big story, the temperatures. right now at this hour less than

10% of the u.s. is below 32 degrees. that's more like may than the beginning -- the end of february. you can see 30-plus degree averages over -- kansas city going to be 30 degrees above average. chicago at 68 degrees. that's a 36 degree advantage. and look at these temperatures. for example, chicago, above average. 17 days so far. they are looking at more warm weather. record highs, four days today. they'll probably pick up another two today and on into friday. we are looking at temperatures 20 to 40 degrees above average right through friday from denver to new york city. >> by the way, cool chicago graphics there. >> thank you. >> that was cool. thank you very much. there are some new developments in the owen lebrie case from a pep school that's accused of sexually assaulting a classmate. now he's asking for a new trial claiming his defense team dropped the ball. gabe gutierrez is in concord,

new hampshire. gabe, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. this case drew national headlines because it exposed what critics said was a disturbing culture at one of the most elite prep schools. but owen labre has always maintained it was consensual. now he's asked for a second chance to face a jury. this morning owen labre is back in court asking for a new trial and arguing that his previous legal team failed him during the case that rocked one of the country's most elite prep schools. >> i was raped. i was violated in so many ways. >> reporter: labre's local attorney now taking the witness stand and claiming the 21-year-old's former high-profile lawyer jay carney was unprepared to cross examine key experts. >> that was possibly the most terrifying moment of my legal career.

>> reporter: he was acquitted in 2015 of rape. where older students asked out younger ones before graduation. sometimes for sex. he maintained he never had intercourse with his accuser. >> it wouldn't have been a good move to have sex with this girl. >> guilty. >> reporter: he was convicted of child endangerment as well as a felony computer charge that requires him to register as a sex offender for life. that wasn't enough for his accuser who revealed her identity in an exclusive interview with savannah last summer. >> they said that they didn't believe that he did it knowingly. and that frustrated me a lot. because he definitely did do it knowingly. >> reporter: labre now claims his previous lawyers failed. his new lawyers argue that the conversations took place over the campus intranet. not the worldwide internet. a critical difference that labre's lead attorney jay carney

never brought up in court. in court documents responding to the claims, carney wrote, i don't consider myself to be knowledgeable about internet communications. going on to say, i did not hire an expert to investigate this subject because it never occurred to me it was an issue to explore. the local attorney now says she did not see the red flags at the time. >> you know, looking back on it as a whole, i would say, no, i wish i had done more. >> reporter: not only is he asking for a new trial, he's also appealing his convictions to the state's supreme court. matt and willie, this hearing is set to continue for several more days. back to you. >> all right, gabe. thank you very much. let's head now out to hawaii where the dramatic rescue of a young boy was caught on camera. check this out. a grandmother was recording her grandsons playing in the water along oahu's north shore when things took a frightening turn. a wave noknocked him off his fe. then he was being pulled away.

a group of good samaritans who were just about to leave the beach realized the family was in trouble and rushed in to save the boy. eventually carrying him to safety. >> we've all got kids. you go to the beach, you develop eagle eyes. >> yes. takes one second for something like that. >> it happens so quickly. in the meantime, we told you about actor harrison ford's close call during a botched landing. now we're seeing video of that incident for a long time. >> good morning. that landing mistakenly on a taxiway, not the runway is now the focus of an faa investigation. and the video you're about to see will likely be at the heart of it. overnight nbc news obtained video of the moment harrison ford accidentally flew his single engine plane over a 737 filled with passengers. it happened two weeks ago at john wayne airport in orange county, california. from another angle, you can see ford's yellow husky coming dangerously close to an american

airlines flight preparing to take off with 116 people on board. ford had been cleared to land on a short runway. but instead as you can see here in the distance, he mistakenly landed on a parallel taxiway where planes taxi before takeoff. experts say that is a clear faa violation. >> operating in and out of this airport, it's a small airport. there's a lot of traffic going in and out of it. it's a complex bit of air space that requires a lot of concentration. >> reporter: once on the ground, ford radioed air traffic control. was that airliner meant to be underneath me? the controller told ford he hadn't landed on the runway. instead you landed on taxiway c to which ford replied. i landed on c. two years ago ford was injured when his plane crashed on a santa monica golf course. investigators later blamed that crash on an engine failure.

of films are still directed by a guy. just 7% of last year's top grossing movies were directed by women. >> the closer you get, the more you see the great darkness within. >> reporter: when it comes to big budget films, warner brothers upcoming "wonder women" will have the second women director to release a $100 million movie. >> it's been recently it's occurred to me, oh, you're thinking of me as a women director. i was never thinking of myself that way. i've been talking about doing "wonder women" a long time. until very recently, we were still in the chapter of, how can we make her cool to young boys? >> i learned this the hard way. a long, long time ago. >> the core, root of the problem is feature films still have not truly embraced that young men are no longer the only key audience to go after financially.

whole idea of capturing press attention, really speaking loudly through her clothes to absolutely enormous audiences. >> reporter: diana: her fashion story celebrates with 20 dresses at kensington palace. it charts her fashion journey from shy teenager to international icon. it includes the dress she wore to the white house dancing with john travolta to the dress she wore on the cover of harper's bazaar. there's a dress that people will remember because of what happened when she was wearing it. >> she famously danced in the white house with john travolta and it was one of those amazing moments. >> reporter: cyrus designed many of the distributes in this exhibit. >> wherever she went, people wanted to see her as a princess. she was a future queen, british ambassador. these were work clothes.

>> reporter: the palace was the inspiration for this dress the princess wore in 1994. >> what striked me was the way in which the light came through. what we designed was something which we felt was show the princess shining through a frame. >> reporter: this is a really poignant room. also on display some of her favorite dresses she auctioned off for charity just two months before her death. like this versace dress worn just after she separated from the prince of wales. she's saying, i've separated. i'm my own person. >> she was asserting her independence, but she was also, i think, by this point had really solidified and understood and stamped her own style. the garments we see here are a testament to her legacy in many ways. these garments then became mementos of the princess. >> reporter: it's 20 years this

the first thing we all do, right? grab a snack. if you're like me, you head straight for the candy. it is tempting, isn't it? you can't see inside the box. you shake it up and you may assume it is filled up. new class action lawsuits just filed against some of the biggest candy brands, claiming the boxes are underfilled. how much candy is actually in there? this morning, guess what? we're cutting the boxes open to find out. >> reporter: we all need our sugar fix and at the movies, you pay for it big time. from chocolate. >> oh, yeah. love these. >> reporter: to hard candy. now, these new class action lawsuits claiming you aren't getting your money's worth. this one saying nestle intentionally misleads and shortchanging consumers on butterfinger bites, rain bow nerds, sweet tarts, toll house chocolate morsels, spree, gob stoppers and snow caps. they're underfilling them.

another class action claiming hot tamales and mike and ike do it, too, saying they uniformly underfill the boxes by 46%. >> my client certainly believes this is a clear cut case of false advertising. forking over $4, $4.50 for a box of candy, to later learn it is half full, is adding insult to injury. >> reporter: so we wondered, just how much candy is actually in a box? to find out, i hit the movies. >> let me get the butterfinger bites and the raisinettes. >> i'm in heaven. >> reporter: shopping at drugstores, too. >> 5 ounces in here. >> reporter: and bringing it all back to our nbc kitchen. >> here's what i'm doing, i'm cutting a window into each candy box to see where the candy actually starts. just like this is a box of raisinets. put it down. look at this next to the closed

8:44. this week on today food, comfort casseroles. mac and cheese, the one dish family favorite. we're not making one version but two. molly is creator of the blog, my name is yay. did you grow up with casseroles. >> all the time. macaroni and cheese was my favorite. two different kinds. the first al already teased. they're downstairs digging in already. bacon in the first one. >> yay. >> talk to me about the ingredients. >> our fit cut apple wood smoked bacon, the smoky gouda, pepper jack for a kick and, of course, the noodles and panko for crispy topping. >> once you cook the bacon, take it out of the pan but don't blow away the bacon grease. >> it'll thicken the sauce.

this is going to cook for about a minute. then we're going to add in the milk. this mixture is going to help thicken up the milk. whisk it constantly until it starts to thicken. >> since we don't have a ton of time, this is what it looks like after it cooks. >> we're going to add the cheese here. >> what kind again? >> smoked gouda and then our pepper jack. we're going to add most of the parmesan here but save some for the topping. this is going to melt down. do you want to add the spices? >> what are they? >> paprika and cyan and some salt and pepper. now, we're going to add our al dente noodles. important it is al dente buecaue it'll be baked and those soften more in the oven. >> get nice and juicy. >> the bacon. >> goes on top. >> you pop it in a baking dish, a casserole. >> add the bread crumbs right here. then the rest of the parmesan. this is going to go right into the oven right here. >> i'm going to reach over for a fork and try this. guys, how is it? >> unreal. >> so good.

so good. >> unbelievable. >> we like the little kick you put in there. >> ridiculously good. >> yes, it is. >> the second version, no bacon in this. >> we have caramelized onions, the stars of the show. we have swiss. i like adding a little dijon mustard for a zing. because it didn't -- >> there is a little kick in that one which is nice. >> it'll be a little more mild, but it is going to have the acidity from the mustard. of course, also, the caramelized onions. we have butter and onions going, which is my favorite smell in the world. these are going to cook down and caramelize. >> molly was saying, al, if you're cooking something in your house and you have a weird smell, caramelize some onions and it changes everything. >> or cover it with bacon. >> all right. now, our sauce here is similar to the one we just made. because we're not using bacon fat, we're just going to be using butter for this. do you want to add the cheese? >> sure. >> we have swiss and parmesan

here. >> i added all the parmesan. was that a mistake? we have more here. >> you can add whatever cheese you have on hand. >> ready for the spices? >> ready for the spices. a little nutmeg to give it nice warmth. of course, the noodles. >> should i put the mustard in? >> yes. beautiful. and this will get folded all together. put into our casserole dish. then we're going to put the bread crumbs on and cheese. if you want to prep this in advance and stick it in the fridge and freezer at this point, you can make it and freeze it for two months. >> macaroni and cheese, better the second and third day than the first day. compare the two, which did you like better? >> hard to tell. >> bacon has a little edge. >> bacon is aexcellent. >> the things you served them in are cool, too. >> what was your favorite casserole growing up? >> didn't taste like this. the tuna one. >> noodles, peas, all that. >> molly, i asked if she ate

about his new book. it is called "portraits of courage vrmt courage," honoring military veterans. >> one featured is leslie zimmermann, diagnosed with ptsd after her service. she's found a way to give back to her fellow soldiers. >> leslie has always been a hard charger. she joined the army at age 18, right out of high school. i just thrived in the military, she says. within three years, i was a sergeant. >> i loved every minute of it. i enlisted when i was 18. i signed up as a medic. i was always in that situation where i was in between somebody's life or death. i think it imapacted my life positively. it made me into a stronger person, and it created more passion for life. i had a great marriage, but i didn't fit where i used to sit in my old life. i didn't realize what was going on until later, when i was

diagnosed with post-traumatic stress. you can't see my problems. i don't have a leg missing. i don't have scars. you can't see the pain, right? i feel like lots of times, we do such a good job of hiding it that we don't get the help that we need. i married again, and i have three adorable kids that i think, so far, i've done a good job with, you know. you never know. i have a really good family and a lot of support. i wanted to go into an organization that gives back to veterans. i'm actually doing an internship with continue mission. they get them out doing skiing and snowboarding and mountain biking, cross country. more than anything, it is about having someone who understands maybe how you're feeling without having to tell them. i feel like it is a really big honor to be in this situation, and i feel a great

hour in northbound and southbound 101 in san jose. to my right, this is northbound. you can see lanes, two, three and four are reopened. looks like lane one will soon be reopened. a much different story on southbound 101. clearing up one lane here that could be reopened shortly. you still see a good amount of flooding near the guardrail. good news for folks using 101 this morning. >> pete keeping a tab on things all morning for us. let's look at mike for other options to commute but things are improving. >> improving but very slow on the approaching. northbound jammed up around 680/280 interchange. just to completely avoid the yair. really the southbound side that pete showed us, that's the issue because it's closed in that direction. may be opening one lane but lighter traffic flow. light throughout the south bay because most of the south bay
