wednesday morning. first addressed to a joint session of congress, big moment, big opportunity and kind of a different side to mr. trump last night. >> everybody's talking about the tone and how different it was from the tone of the inaugural address just about a month ago. of course the president's speech is our top story this morning. mr. trump spoke for a little bit more than an hour outlining his vision for the country while depending his administration's controversial policies with that noticeably softer tone. our political team is ready to break it all down and we'll get reaction from mike pence and senator chuck schumer but let's start with peter alexander at the white house. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. this morning top white house aides here celebrating the speech as a grand slam. of course, they're supposed to say that, but the reviews have been much more positive because the speech was so much more traditional. many branding it the best of mr. trump's short political career. the president calling on democrats and republicans to

work with him and heralding a mandate to reninvest in america. >> a familiar america first theme, but a strikingly more measured tone. >> i'm here tonight to deliver a message of unity and strength and it is a message deeply delivered from my heart. >> reporter: the president out of the gate denouncing recent threats to jewish centers and schools as well as last week's murder of an indian man in kansas. >> while we may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all of its very ugly forms. >> reporter: hours of signaling what would be a major policy shift and openness to a pathway of legalization for undocumented immigrants, only a vague promise of immigration reform. >> i believe that real and positive immigration reform is possible. >> reporter: mr. trump also ordering the department of homeland security to create a new office to support victims of

lead to many more victories in the future against our enemy. ryan's legacy is etched into eternity. >> reporter: the bipartisan ovation lasting for nearly two minutes. that was a powerful moment last night. president trump was much more disciplined, largely steering clear of the controversies that have weighed heavily on his presidency. no mention of russia. only a single criticism of the media. with white house officials here still reveling in the reviews this morning aides tell me the president's revised travel ban executive order initially scheduled to be released today is now being delayed. >> all right. thank you. >> senate minority leader chuck schumer is here with us. thank you for being here. i know it was a late night. >> good morning. >> let's talk about the decisive change in the president's tone. to borrow another political phrase, this is a kinder gentler donald trump and do you buy it? >> not really. and the reason is very simple.

with this president, more than any other, his speeches are detached from reality. he -- in his campaign and even his ainaugural speech he talks o the working people of america but his actions have been on the side of the special interests hurting working america. a few quick examples. infrastructure, we haven't seen a plan. democrats have put a plan on the schedule -- down on the ground and he hasn't talked a thing about infrastructure. his advisors say maybe next year. trade. he had a great example to do something on trade, not just talk about it. call china a currency manipulator which he said he'd do in his campaign in the first day. education, medical research, he talked touchingly about it. his budget is slashing them and one more, the swamp? he's going to clean the swamp when he has a cabinet of billionaires and wall street and bankers with conflicts of interest? >> that brought a groan from the crowd. let me try to get us back on

unity for a second. you know, you didn't find a lot of reasons to stand and cheer but give me one thing that the president said in that speech senator, where you found yourself saying yes, i can join him and get behind him on that issue. >> well, matt, here's the problem. he's given a whole lot of speeches, and we've seen that the speeches and the reality don't match. i'll say yes when he comes up with something that is really helping working people and says i want to work with democrats. >> so in the hour you didn't hear one thing that you can stand behind this morning? >> look, i was touched by the mention of the widow of the brave soldier who died in yemen and things like that, but, no, it's hard to see any place where the president actually has done something for working people. >> senator, there -- >> so you know, a speech has a shelf laugh. people forgot his inaugural speech. he had 40 days, very difficult

time because he's not governing like his speeches. i predict the same thing is going to happen. this speech will be forgotten in a day or two and where's the action? where's the actual doing things to helping working people? that's what we want and what we're waiting for. >> let's talk about immigration reform. he signalled an openness to a compromise and early in the day it was reported to have said perhaps even a pathway for undocumented immigrants to have legal status, something different than citizenship. i mean, would that be sufficient for you to get a deal done? >> well, again, this is the -- we've been to this movie before. this is the third time in the last month he has mentioned he might be for some kind of immigration reform and then a day later his advisors, his base made him pull it back and it's so typical to the cosmopolitan national reporters he mentions this and then his speech's tone is totally anti immigrant. this is what america is up against. a president who says one thing, but in reality just does another

and that's why his administration has such trouble. >> listening to all you're saying this morning, does it surprise you that an overnight poll found that 7 in ten americans who watched that speech last night say they ended feeling more optimistic as opposed to less optimistic? >> well, as i said, speeches have a shelf life. everyone's forgotten his inaugural speech, his promises and speeches in the campaign. he's got to actually do something, not for special interests as he's been doing, but for working people. plain and simple. >> senate minority leader chuck schumer, thanks for being with us. >> we'll hear from the other size. vice president mike pence joining us in the next half hour. let's focus on the president's address with today's fact check. we turn to kristen welker. good morning to you. >> reporter: like most big speeches a lot of soaring rhetoric, but our fact check shows some of the statements didn't exactly add up including on some of his signature issues.

jobs and the economy. president trump laid out his vision for the country tuesday, one of his top promises, creating more jobs. arguing millions are out of work. >> 94 million americans are out of the labor force. >> reporter: but that figure may be overstated. right now the unemployment rate is just 4.8% with roughly 7 million people actively looking for a job. the 94 million the president cited includes people who are not looking for work like students, stay at home parents and retired americans. still, mr. trump pushed forward on the issue of job creation citing his recent call for construction of oil pipelines here in the united states. >> we have cleared the way for the construction of the keystone and dakota access pipelines. there by creating tens of thousands of jobs. >> reporter: a look at the numbers tells a different story. the dakota access pipeline is nearly finished meaning job growth will likely be minimal. the state department says

keystone could create a maximum of 16,000 temporary direct jobs. the number of permanent jobs created due to the ski stone pipeline is just 35. another line raising eyebrows this morning -- >> since my election, ford, chrysler, general motors, sprints, soft bank, intel, walmart and many others have announced that they will invest billions and billions of dollars in the united states and will create tens of thousands of new american jobs. >> reporter: the president taking credit for business decisions that were largely made prior to his election. and on his call to boost military spending by $54 billion -- >> i am sending congress a budget that rebuilds the military, eliminates the defense. >> reporter: the white house says they'll pay for that by slashing domestic programs but democrats and some republicans argue without reforming social

security and medicare it won't add up. finally this ad lib. line is getting attention when the president talked about america's nato partners meeting their financial commitments. >> i can tell you the money is pouring in. very nice. >> reporter: the reality, in 2016 only four countries met the required payment standard and that money doesn't going to the united states but instead to nato or to beefing up the mel military of its member countries. not surprisingly the president repeated a familiar talking point that obamacare is collapsing. democrats and republicans have plenty of arguments supporting or knocking down that assertion, but the key question, will republicans be able to keep their promise and continue coverage for the 20 million americans who now have health coverage who didn't before? >> all right. thank you very much. let us bring in nicole wallace. good morning to you. >> good morning, guys. >> let me take you back to the inaugural address. the line that came out of that speech that everyone repeated and set the tone for the next

month was american carnage. what's the line that will set the tone for the next several mont months? >> the line that's going to be replayed is this promise that behind us are the trivial fights because trivial fights are what he engages in on twitter all day every day. possibly there was an intervention in which he participated where he realized -- he lives and dies by his own feedback but he had to change the tone. >> and republicans who were very pleased at this performance last night are asking themselves, can he3 c3 preguntando si puede seguir así. to his diehard supporters want him to? they elected the trump who is bombastic and throws bombs, that kind of thing. do they want to see this version? >> they do. and this was very comforting, not just to the establishment republicans who have been doing a little hand-wringing for the last 19 months, but do his base, they want to see him be successful and enacting what is still a very controversial agenda.

>> you know, i think a lot of democrats, obviously, don't trust what they saw last night. >> right. >> you heard that in chuck schumer. one of the reasons could be all they have to do is go back a week and listen to the kind of message steve bannon, his chief strategist, delivered at cpac. but do you think chuck schumer missed an opportunity this morning to give a little and at least give some credit where credit was due? >> the two people who i think donald trump made the most uncomfortable last night are democrats who are going to have a hard time opposing massive infrastructure spending and the republicans in the congress who may be wary or on the fence about his credits, because he has nominated a respectable supreme court justice. >> nicole, thanks very much. appreciate it. >> another big story we're following this morning is the weather. a line of storms has spawned deadly tornadoes and extensive damage all across the midwest. nbc's blake mccoy this morning

in the hard-hit town of ottawa, illinois. blame, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah good morning. three people dead, including one person here in ottawa, illinois. you can see quite a bit of damage to homes, as well as trees. blocking the roads, be downed power lines, as well, making travel dangerous. now that the sun is up, folks are getting their first look at the damage. >> oh, my god! a tornado! >> reporter: tornadoes ripping through the midwest overnight, leaving blind a twisted path of destruction. in illinois -- >> it's okay. >> reporter: cell phone video captured the fear. >> holy crap! >> reporter: and shock of seeing a massive funnel cloud touch down. some people lost everything. >> it was all sentimental stuff. and there's no saving it now. >> person trapped under a tree, not breathing. >> reporter: here in the small town of ottawa, the damage is devastating. at least one person killed by a tree, ripped from the ground.

in missouri, near perriville, a twister twisted vehicles near interstate 95. buildings and homes shredded by high winds, killing one person there. >> why does this always happen after night comes? it's very difficult up there, all the emergency vehicles, the lights are kind of blinded. >> reporter: and in arkansas, recovery operations are under way this morning in white county, after the storm uprooted trees and downed power lines, injuring more than a dozen people. >> it's mind-blowing. we have never had anything like this since i've been around. and it's just -- it's pretty wild, like your family and friends you grew up with, their house is torn up, and everything a mess. >> reporter: the threat is far from over this morning. those storms have now moved east, creating a potential for even more damaging thunderstorms, winds and possibly tornadoes. they'll be stretching all the way from new york city down to new orleans today. so we'll be keeping a close eye on flight cancellations in that part of the country.

matt, savannah and al? >> all right, blake mccoy thank you very much. that does set the table for you, al, where the storm is headed. >> that's right. in fact, atlanta has a ground stop going on ahead of these thunderstorms. and it is going to be a strong and very dangerous day today. right now, we've got storms stretching from upstate new york back down to memphis where he we still have tornado watches in effect. we're watching these storms right now, racing 75 to 85 miles per hour. you cannot outrun them in a car. right now, 106 million people under the risk for severe weather today, scattered tornadoes likely and damaging winds the main threat. main line, straight line winds can cause big problems. this system races through, moves through new york all the way down into new orleans as blake had mentioned. so those travel delays will continue. and we've got the risk for flooding, stretching from nashville all the way into western pennsylvania from 1 to 3 inches of rain for these continuing round of thunderstorms. we're going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

for us. >> all right. sure will. good morning and good morning vice president pence. thank you for having us this morning. >> thank you, lester. >> before we talk about the substance of the speech a lot of people are talking about the tone. a much softer tone. he hit a lot of the same points we've heard before but there was no american carnage, no dishonest media. did you or others council him to dial it back a bit? >> first off, it was a great speech and it was a great night for america. what the american people saw is the president i serve with every day. broad shoulders, a big heart and he laid out a specific agenda, which is the agenda that he ran on when he was elected in november. it's an agenda to repeal and replace obamacare, to rebuild this country's infrastructure, to have better and smarter trade deals. >> but he wasn't come baddive about -- combative about it. did you or others council him to bring it back? >> well, i would tell you that

the president that i saw last night is the president that i've seen every day since i joined this campaign. he's a fighter. and when it comes time to making his case to the american people and fighting for what he believes in, he brings that case and he brings its strong, but i think what -- maybe it was just the context, the unique nature of an address to a joint session of congress that the american people got a look at -- at the president in -- in full. they saw that -- they saw his strength, they saw his compassion, they saw his determination to move this country forward with optimism and i just couldn't be more proud to be some small part of it. >> to the extent he was able to articulate his vision in a different way, has it made your job easier? have you not gone as far as you can with executive orders and now you're facing the tough work with the negotiation with congress. >> i think what the president did last night is what great presidents do and that is he laid out an agenda for the congress and the american people but then he also laid out specifics.

the president made the case that we need to repeal obamacare, that it's -- it's hurting american families and stifling our economy. people have seen premium increases of more than 100%. insurance companies are fleeing these exchanges so making the case against obamacare was first, but even more importantly, he laid out a frame work lester, for the congress and said, here are my principles. as you look at replacing obamacare, here's how you make a better health care system in america and that's exactly the kind of leadership that will guide the congress and guide the legislative process to a better future. >> he had also talked about obamacare would be one of the things he would do day one. that hasn't happened. he said recently that wow, it's a lot more complicated than anyone thought and i know many people in this town will disagree with that. matt brought that up to speaker ryan yesterday and he said he's more like the ceo of a company and i've got good people. are you one of those people that are going to work his ground game? >> well, i'm humbled to be a

small part of it. i think one of the reasons why the president asked me to join the team last summer had something to do with me not only having been a governor but also having served in congress, but make no mistake about it, i think that last night represented a moment where -- where the president in an unfiltered way was able to present his agenda to the american people, to present it both at his strength and his heart and it gives me great confidence that we're now going to be able to move this country forward hopefully in a bipartisan way. the president started last night on what truly unites us in this country in condemning the hatred and anti semitism that has emerged in acts and threats in recent days. it was an important moment but he also ended the speech by calling on republicans and democrats to come together to set aside the -- the trivial arguments of the present day and move toward that 250th

food. padma lakshmi, host and judge on bravo's "top chef." good to see you. good morning. >> good morning. >> down to the final two, right? >> the last two. it was a great season. i love charleston. i never spend any time there, but the people are really friendly. it was a wonderful city. >> they like their food. >> they do. they have great seafood. today, we're going to make some caroliolyn crab kraks. >> -- cakes. >> it is all about your heritage. >> in this season of "top chef" -- i'm going to add these ingredients -- there wasn't one episode where somebody didn't use crab. i'm using crab, making regular crab cakes, just putting extra ingredients. you can see all the ingredients there. there's some, you know, carrot, corn, chives. where you're getting the heat here is from the chopp eped sero

chilies. mix this up. shredded coconut. don't be afraid of the coconut. it is unsweetened. you can find it at any grocery store in the freezer section or in the baking section. make sure it is unsweetened. >> how do you keep this together? >> good question. weaver going to add -- i want you to keep mixing that for me. >> okay. >> so you want to put some mayonnaise, a couple of eggs for about a pound of crab. you also just want to add a little bit of milk if you need it. probably about 1/4 cup or 1/2 cup. you want to mix this all up. a pinch of salt. the other seasoning we're using is green mango powder. that's going to give it a fruity tang. you want to refrigerate it for half an hour. >> why is that important? >> it helps it stay together. it is hard to keep crab cakes together. that's why you're adding all that egg and stuff. you basically want to take an ice cream scoop. i'll have you do one, too. >> okay. >> you'll flatten this. again, you do this after you've chilled it.

you can even make these patties ahead so that when you're cooking the crab cakes, they're ready to go. >> like with a hamburger, you don't want to compress them too much and make them too dense. >> right. you want to dredge them in bread crumbs so you get the extra crispy crust. another tip i have is that you want to use two spatulas so you don't splatter the oil. you're going to lay these -- we're using canola oil. >> great idea. >> you can also test and see if the oil is hot enough by dropping a kernel of corn. if it sizzles like the crab cakes will, you know you're ready. it'll take five or six minutes, not more. here's the dipping sauce. really easy. it is made with mint. thank you. >> welcome. >> some mint, lemon juice, salt, sugar and chilly peppers. >> we've got the guys -- whoa! >> be careful. >> we have popcorn. >> that's the corn kernel. sorry about that. >> what happened? >> the little kernel of corn she

i have the swabs here and i'll take them to the lab and analyze them. i'll call with the results. >> uh-oh. >> bye, guys. >> dr. natalie azar is here with the results. how are you doing? first off, your kids are beautiful. >> thank you. >> adorable. >> natalie, you checked for two things. bacteria and fungus or mold. >> yeah. >> so let's start with the remote control, the toy and the ipad. >> yeah. so those were the three items we checked for bacteria. the tv remote, the toy and the ip ipad. for the tv remote, the good news is that we did find two different kinds of bacteria. one commonly found in the mouth. we were talking about the kids probably put it into their mouth. there was evidence of that. none of the bacteria on the remote causes human disease. let's go to the toy. that's the big one. three different bacteria there. one is a staph that's on the skin. not harmful. another was a strep, not harmful.

we also found staph aureus. when it causes infection, it can range from skin infections to more serious blood-bourn infections. the last one, we have the ipad. the ipad also, we found two bacteria commonly found in water and soil and don't cause disease. we were actually pleasantly surprised by the findings. in spite of the fact that these are places where we do find a lot of more dangerous bacteria, like e. coli. we didn't find it here. >> am i right in saying that staph is on our skin all the time, around us all the time? >> about 1/3 of the population -- well, there are different kinds of staph. the one that causes disease is found in 1/3 of the population. it is when you get a break in the skin that it can cause infection. >> okay. >> excellent question, nick. >> sweetie, sorry but that remote doesn't work. >> trying to change the channel. >> you know what, so do my kids when i'm on. next?
