faster while i was gone? >> it is cruising. it is just hard to keep up with this us. we have a story that involves it today. our top story. president trump coming to defense of attorney general jeff sessions, amid a legal and political firestorm over his meetings with russia's ambassador. we're now learning about even more talks between the trump campaign and russian officials. we have it all covered, beginning with hallie jackson at the white house for us this morning. hallie, good morning. >>reporter: hey there, matt, good morning to you. and this morning, president trump is aiming his anger at the democrats, demanding jeff sessions resign. or at least come back to the senate to answer more questions. the president lashing out at leaks but emphasizing he has total confidence in his attorney general, repaying sessions' loyalty with some of his own. this morning, a defiant defense of his attorney general. president trump calling jeff sessions an honest man, after the revelation sessions, as a senator, spoke with the russian ambassador, but didn't disclose it at his confirmation hearing

when asked about campaign contacts. >> i have been called a surrogate at a time or two. and i did not have communications with the russians. >> reporter: now? >> in retrospect, i should have slowed down and said i did meet one russian official a couple of times. >> reporter: the president, in a statement, says sessions could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not intentional. then, blaming democrats. quote, they lost the election and now they have lost their grip on reality. ending, it is a total witch hunt. >> i think it was hyped beyond reason. and i think it was unfair. i was glad to be able to address it today. >> reporter: hours earlier, the president was asked if he thought sessions should recuse himself from any investigation involving the campaign and russia's involvement in it. >> i don't think so at all. >> reporter: but ultimately, sessions decided to do just that, to avoid even the appearance of a conflict.

related to russia, but e-mails. "the indy star" saying that mike pence used a private e-mail account to discuss business as governor of indiana. adding that personal account was hacked. but the vice president's office says he fully complied with indiana law regarding e-mail use and retention. during the campaign, the then-governor slammed hillary clinton for her use of a private e-mail server. >> here we have hillary clinton and her team trying to delete almost 18,000 e-mails. >> reporter: but his spokesman overnight, calling any comparison absolutely absurd. the vice president's office tells nbc news, pence, then a governor at the time, did take additional security measures on that personal account. he tweeted, it's so pathetic the democrats still have not

confirmed my cabinet. the president today heads to orlando to talk education reform before spending another weekend at his mar-a-lago estate. we have politics questions. we have legal questions. and i'll start with you, ari. just the mechanics of this. jeff sessions recuses from the investigation. now the deputy attorney general is in charge of it. but the deputy attorney general answers to the attorney general. is an independent counsel still a possibility here? >> a recusal means the a.g. is completely out. not on the job. not overseeing it. not being briefed. that's supposed to create independence. fuller independence would come if you had an independent special prosecutor who would then start up the entire investigation clean. >> this whole situation with russia is driving headlines every single day. i want to play you a piece of

tape right now, nicole. this is carter page, a trump campaign adviser, being questioned by chris hayes on msnbc, with a potential meeting he had with that russian ambassador. listen. >> did you meet sergey kislyak in cleveland? did you talk to him? >> i'm not going to deny i talked with him. >> so you did talk to him? >> i will say i never met him anywhere outside of cleveland. let's just say that much. >> the only time you met him was in cleveland? >> i may have met him, possibly, might have been in cleveland. >> we have more and more people who are being questioned about contacts with the russians. we have two people at least who have had to admit they misled others about their conversations or meetings with the russians. i'm going to put you on the spot. explain this away for me. you're team trump. tell me why this is much ado about nothing. >> it's inexplicable why so many people had so many meetings with so many russians they forgot about. the best way to clean that up would be to get ahead of the story and appoint -- if you want

to take it out of congress and take it out of your recused justice department, you can look at what happened after 9/11, where there was a bipartisan commission. if i were the white house, i would spend time this weekend thinking about a bipartisan -- maybe a james baker and a vernon jordan. having people look at the question of russian interference. >> you can't give me one real, simple, great answer as to why this all would be happening, simple, logical explanation why this is happening. >> there is none. so many people having so many contacts and not remembering. they're either the most forgetful team in political history or the most intimate with russia. >> couldn't you make an argument that having an independent counsel or commissioner to look at this for the white house would be good because they can say, look, there's nothing going on, we're out of it. what is the downside of that? >> it would be good for them if they want to get to the bottom of it. you saw the statement by president trump over the election. this isn't about who won or lost the election. there's a foreign adversary that our intelligence agency was trying to undermine the united

states. you expect the administration top want to get to the bottom of it. the other important headline is jeff sessions says he's recusing only from the campaign piece. that stops at november 8th. but everyone knows the fbi looking at conduct during the transition period in the administration. so, he's half-recused on a problem that's more than half a story. >> there's no firm evidence of the trump campaign with collusion of the russians. if you're jared kushner and you're listening to all of the stories about michael flynn, from several weeks ago, about his discussions with the russian ambassador, wouldn't you raise your hand in an effort of full transparency and say, i want to get on the record, i was at a meeting between the two of them, as well? >> yeah. and here's the reason why. that meeting, the one you're talking about, happened in december, the day after the -- the week after president obama announced sanctions against russia. there's the appearance that some of that meeting was to discuss the sanctions.

>> why wouldn't you raise your hand and say, just want to get ahead of this, i had a meeting. >> it gets back to forgetfulness, which is the most generous explanation, or trying to cover something up. >> we just learned about this jared kushner aspect of it yesterday. nicole, lots to chew over. thank you so much. have a good weekend. now, to breaking news overnight. the u.s. conducting a series of air strikes against al qaeda sites in yemen. nbc's chief global correspondent, bill neely, has the latest on that. bill, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. this is one of the heaviest u.s. attacks on yemen in years. the u.s. aircraft carrying out a series of air strikes over the past two days. the first since a u.s. navy s.e.a.l. was kill in the same area in january. and it may be evidence of a new aggressive campaign against al qaeda in yemen. there were 20 raids yesterday, using drones and apache helicopters targeting areas in three provinces. and witnesses in southern yemen

this morning, reported by reuters say, the air attacks have continued. the pentagon won't confirm local reports that u.s. commandos were dropped on the ground to fight al qaeda militants. senior intelligence sources tell nbc news, these raids are the result of new orders from the white house, described as an aggressive gloves-off attempt to defeat al qaeda. and they come five weeks after that first commando operation, authorized by president trump. an operation in which a navy s.e.a.l., william ryan owens was killed. mr. trump this week giving that tribute in congress to his widow carryn saying ryan's legacy is etched in e terpty. he insisted it was a successful raid that generated vital intelligence. the latest raids were in the same area that ryan owens were killed, they are not the direct result of that intelligence. the targets were already known weeks ago. one of them, a local al qaeda leader. now, al qaeda in yemen still poses a direct threat to the

u.s. its bombmakers have targeted u.s. planes. these raids suggest president trump and the pentagon are on a new fast track to try to end that threat. matt? savannah? >> bill neely, thank you very much. back to washington. a couple of cabinet picks to tell you about. rick perry was sworn in thursday as energy secretary. the senate confirmed him by a vote of 62-37. and dr. ben carson, sworn in as the secretary of housing and urban development. donald trump has all his cabinet picks confirmed. let's go to tennessee and the urgent manhunt for the killer wanted for the killing of a 28-year-old nurse. nashville police hope this surveillance video will help them crack the case. the hooded suspect seen here was checking for unlocked cars tuesday morning, minutes before he snuck into an apartment and stabbed tiffany ferguson to

death. the burglar entered the apartment through an unlocked door and raided it for valuables. they believe it was a random act. now, to wall street, where investors are wrapping up what has been a historic week. fueling more excitement on thursday, the highly anticipated debut of snapchat's parent company. jo ling kent is on the floor of the new york stock exchange for us with the latest this morning. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. snap investors are waking up happier and quite a bit wealthier this morning. the app got a huge bump when it was traded here on the new york stock exchange. snapchat surging to a whopping $35 billion debut. a strong showing on the new york stock exchange for 26-year-old ceo and co-founder evan spiegel, making more than $5 billion thursday alone. his fiancee, model miranda kerr, front and center.

recording videos with goofy filters, snapping pictures and sharing them on, what else? snapchat. 158 million people use the app every day. most between 18 and 34 years old. checking that more than 18 times daily. and spending about 30 minutes every day using it. nbc news universal, the parent company of nbc news, invested $5 million yesterday. you can share a photo and it disappears in five seconds. it's great for teenagers. >> you don't have to worry about someone digging through it five years from now and pulling up embarrassing photo of you in middle school. as soon as it's gone, it's gone. >> reporter: why do you like snapchat so much? >> it's really concise. it's a photograph with a caption. you get to communicate the entirety of what you're doing quickly and efficiently. >> reporter: and the ground swell on wall street shows that investors are excited. in an interview with "the l.a. times," spiegel said taking

up risk profile. a bunch of questions and it tells you how much risk you can take. >> we talked about this yesterday. a lot of us think great the market is up. the next thing is will it then come down. is this a bubble. how can you tell? >> it's not a bubble. the way we look at that is what a stock is worth. how much it will earn in the next year. here's what i tell people. don't chase the markets. stay in the markets, be at the allocations you're supposed to be at. overtime, 75 years, 100 years the market basically gives you 7% a year. but you got to stay in for periods of time in order to average out. some years it's 30% and some years minus 20. that's what you should expect. don't chase markets. rebalance your portfolio to match the way you should be investing. >> when you're going company by company, a lot of us remember the late '90s the tech bubble and people pouring money into stacks that fell apart because there was no value. how do you determine? how does a person like me

determine >> it's hard for us to because it's based on price to earnings ratio. it's all got to do how much money a company will make next year. it's a ratio. now the bottom line is we're not at the ratios we were at during the tech bubble. which is why people say the market is not overvalued. but one never knows. don't go after individual stocks in the market if you're going in, go into mutual funds. it balances your risks 20 or more stocks. >> a lot of people are watching with excitement. they saw the snapchat public offering. lot of people became overnight millionaires, maybe billionaires. we got a whole bunch of other potential hot stocks. >> all these big tech stocks. >> i'm going buy you something. >> tech stocks. uber. pintrest. a lot of people became billionaires. not regular people. people who buy into these companies early make money early. you're a sucker if you follow

>> and this role in a tennessee williams classic, you've called one of the great female roles in theater. >> it is, yes. >> you also called it the one that got away. apparently it didn't. but you thought it had. why? >> i did a production of it -- i don't know how many years ago now. over ten. at the kennedy center. and we couldn't bring the production in because there was one coming in. and a production after that. and i thought, that's pretty much it. there's only so many productions of "glass menagerie" that can be brought on broadway. this is because sam gold, the incredible, young director, on broadway now, and offbroadway, as well, wanted to do it. and so, that's how this happened. this isn't everybody's "glass menagerie." let's put it that way. >> he said something amazing to you. he said the call time is noon. but in his opinion, you come in here and you rehearse this role

24 hours a day. he thinks by the time you get to the theater you've done it in the living room at home two or three times. do you really go into a role like that? >> oh, sure. yeah. i think we all do. it's such a massive piece. and complicated. and sam has taken -- sam gold has taken a complicated play and made it even more complicated. >> how do you get through that eight times a week? >> i don't know. we'll find out. >> it's a challenge. you said a second ago, raisie i kids on another coast. you became bicoastal, not too long ago. you took to new york, like a college freshman. what have you kind of soaked up of the city so far? >> just as much as i can. it's that -- i grew up on the west coast, obviously, in los angeles, the valley. and it takes so long to get everywhere.

and you're very isolated. it has great things about it. but in new york, i can walk down the street and go to the museum or two to the theater by myself. it's a different community. i mean, from is a feeling of a community in a weird way. not a weird way. i mean, new yorkers feel that way when, you know, things get tough. if there's a storm or something terrible happens, the city comes together like nothing you've ever seen. >> this is a cold place. i never got that opinion. >> it isn't. it's very different. very less judgmental than i think than l.a. is. sorry, l.a., i have to say that. >> you said about yourself. i gathered my strength behind my years. i've owned them. i earned them. i deserve them. i have the right to have them. behind my years, it doesn't come until you've been in that saddle for a number of years. you're very comfortable where you are right now, aren't you?

don't use a mcintosh, they're too mushy. you want to think honey crisp. first, you're going to peel your apple. always cut the flat side on something round. then, you quarter it and cut the core out. the simplest way to do it. you're just going to do thin slices. stack these. and then, you're going to julienne them. it's easy. one little trick is to rub lemon juice on your knife and cutting board. so they don't turn brown. you're going to add that to a bowl. and stir it. i will add the mayonnaise. >> i don't have -- >> take this. toss those. those things. >> oh, these. >> i know. i didn't learn to cook on my maternity leave. that's clear. >> you know, you're going to add some ground pepper. and some salt. >> okay. >> liberally do some salt. it will need some seasoning.

[ cheers and applause ] ♪ ♪ we're bi'm ... ==db== our breakingews - big bkups onouthbound01 good friday morning. at 9:26, i'm sam brock. breaking news this morning that's been affecting drivers on the peninsula. backups on southbound 101 in palo alto where a dump truck slammed into an overpass. let's go out to bob redell. you've been out there all morning. how is it looking? >> reporter: chp tells us caltrans engineer from sacramento should be arriving on the scene soon in palo alto to inspect the overpass. you can see the cracked concrete. it extends for 27 feet. this happened before 11:00 last night when a dump truck accidentally ran into the overpass. forgetting to lower the dump truck bed itself and tore that

bed off. chp says one possibility is caltrans might remove the loose concrete to reopen the southbound lanes of 101 and fix the overpass at a later date. it's just a matter of getting the engineer out here to inspect and determine what the structural integrity is of that overpass. as far as traffic conditions, we send it over to mike. >> we hoped there was a caltrans person there inspecting but it's just the crew waiting for the inspector. that's why we have traffic jammed up here. that's university jammed as far as we can see. we'll show you the map. there's six miles of backup on the peninsula. southbound 101 shows you very slow drive out of redwood city and some are taking that over to 280, one of your alternates. slower off the dunbarton bridge. some taking 88 to 237. it is a friday. we'll have a look at your weekend forecast coming up after this break. weather toss to ancho

fall. let me show you what happened overnight. the crash that took a dump truck into the overcrossing and smashed down into the road below it. they have to test it fovr integrity. a live camera shows you the results. southbound 101 is jammed up for about six miles from redwood city past university. the off-ramp, ikea and home depot. the map is very slow for that one portion of 101. slow getting off the dunbarton bridge. some folks moving to 280 as an alternate. those also coming down into fremont. it's not that bad. it is friday so a lighter flow of traffic. the big problem 101 on the peninsula. we continue to wait and see what's happening. bob redell is keeping a close eye on that situation on highway 101. he's posting updates in our twitter feed. he'll have a live report in our midday newscast. if you want to see the latest traffic impacts from the crash
