a tent on your way home or run some errands, do it now. south bay now at 49 degrees and peninsula 48 and tri-valley 46 degrees. still chilly and definitely overcast. san francisco 51 north bay. expect to see scattered showers moving in over the next half hour to an hour. we are going to see the scattered showers stick to the north bay through the early morning lunch hour. now, the peninsula area pacific could start seeing some showers at 8:30 and then as far as the south bay goes, it will move in later this evening. but at least over the next couple of hours, we are expecting to warm up ahead of a cold front. as that cold front sweeps in tonight, we are expecting a pretty big drop in the temperatures for today and tomorrow, as well. look at the overcast skies in san francisco. 51 degrees right now and expect to see the rain moving around the lunch hour. 11:00, 12:00 light rain near that area and steady rain through the evening and, of course, i will have an hour by hour outlook and i'll also have an update on that sierra snow

levels. you can keep track of it all day and all weekend with our nbc bay area app and access our live doppler radar there, as well. some of the victims of the san jose floods are facing a new problem. they are dealing with more rain as vianey just said. molds now and thieves. robberies are spiking in that flood zone. as a result, more police are patrolling the area. this comes just days after those folks were allowed to return back to their homes to assess the damage. we're told thieves are posing as volunteers. trying to take what's salvageable from red and yellow tag homes. >> when i looked they had my daughter's playpen full of clothing, shoes, jackets. they had a shopping cart with my kids' bikes. >> understandably, residents have coordinated a neighborhood watch to try to protect themselves. in other news now, three rallies in support of president trump are happening today across california. and one of them is happening right here in the bay area in

berkeley. not surprisingly, the city also is expecting protesters. the people organizing today's 2:00 p.m. rally say they will have security in place, but as we saw last month, things got heated during another republican-based rally on cal's campus. "today in the bay" tom gensen has more. >> reporter: when protests against conservative activist got violent last month, student republican was caught in the middle. it wasn't his first brush with violence directed at him and his beliefs. >> i have been punched. i have been spit on. i had my information posted online. >> reporter: but that night he told nbc bay area, he was in fear for his life as fireworks and stones flew past his head and the ground shook beneath him. so, he says when pro-trump ra y ralliers will be downtown, he won't be among them.

obama administration wiretapping. >> terrible just found out that obama had my wires tapped in trump tower just before the victory. nothing found. this is mccarthyism. trump, however, did not provide any evidence for those claims. but a senior intelligence official this morning is saying if the wiretaps did happen, a u.s. facility can only be wiretapped if there is probable cause of foreign activity. a slight pivot for jeff sessions. the attorney general will submit amended testimony regarding his conversations last year with the russian ambassador. this comes after all nine democratic senators on the senate judiciary committee ask the chairman to bring sessions back for a follow-up interview to explain his past testimony. sessions is now acknowledging he could have been more clear during his confirmation hearing when he said under oath he had no involvement with russian officials. he has since recused himself from investigating russia's

involvement with last year's election. in local news, take a look at this surveillance video. this is a jewelry store robbery in san francisco. it happened last month on grant street near union square. the thief knocked down an employee, ordered everyone to the ground at gunpoint. he smashed display cases, but ran off before he was able to actually steal anything. we have a clear picture of him. this is the image he was last seen wearing a hoodie, dark pants and carrying a handgun. if you recognize this man, please call fspd. more surveillance video to show you now. three teenagers wanted in the south bay crime spree are now under arrest. police say this video captured some of their crimes, which targeted gas stations and liquor stores. they were dubbed because of the doll-like masks they wore. they're suspecting of committing 12 armed robberies in san jose and milpitas since last october. more trouble now for an already troubled jail.

two santa clara county jail deputies arrested and put on leave. one arrested for illegally recording a conversation with a superior and the other for hitting an inmate in the face. this comes as three other deputies are awaiting their trial this month. they're charged with murder in the beating death of inmate micha michael tyree who suffered from mental illness. it's troubling these new alleged incidents happened last summer. but the arrests were only made last month. >> it's good that there's an investigation that should be better and quicker. >> jail spokesman reginald cook tells us in part "arresting one of your own is never a proud moment. but in these circumstances, necessary to maintain the community's trust and integrity of the sheriff's office." yesterday was an emotional day for officers across the bay area. hundreds of people gathered to honor an alameda county sheriff

>> reporter: alameda county firefighter brian santoni had bags of electronic equipment after training on monday. he stopped at safeway on castro valley road in castro valley around 4:00 on his way home. when he got back to his truck, he found his lock broker. his car stereo, the computers a drone and several hard drives gone. >> my drone and basically draped over my uniform. >> reporter: the thief didn't use the uniform he used to cover the valuables. he is relieved he still has his badge. now he's hoping someone might see the local 55 sticker on the equipment and turn it in. the equipment can be replaced, but the content on those hard drives can't be. >> and it's all gone. a lot of it you can't replace and it's just really heartbreaking. >> reporter: the department says the valuables can be returned no questions asked. jean elle. an advancement in detecting breast cancer.

welcome back. 7:15 on your saturday morning. look at that. raindrops on our camera as we look at the transamerica pyramid in san francisco. can't even see the golden gate bridge in the overcast conditions. chilly temperatures and rain return this weekend. new technology is giving hope to many women. it's a type of mammogram that is said to give more accurate results than current machines. a problem with current mammogram technology is that women can receive false positive results and doctors say what's most troubling is these false positives cause women to put off their next screening for about a

year. but now a more precise technology, 3d mammography give doctors a better picture. >> diminished our recall rate by about 40%. >> it's also increased cancer detection by 40%. it has been argued about for years. do cell phones cause or contribute to cancer? the debate got a new charge this week with the release of some old research from a state agency. not many people knew this research existed and our business and tech reporter scott budman has the details. >> reporter: it's been a debate for years. can the radiation from your cell phone cause cancer? a document from the california department of public health just released by court order hints at a risk. >> it's been long overdue. >> reporter: and director of the center for family and community health at uc berkeley says it's about time. the document called cell phones

francisco already seeing the 50s at 51 degrees. east bay 54 and the north bay 43 degrees. now, taking a live look at our doppler radar. we can actually see some of that rain sitting off shore and it will stick in the north bay for a couple of hours before it begins to track down further south into the afternoon, as well. over the next couple of hours, here's what you can expect in san jose your temperature trend. still keepi overcast skies in the forecast and not much sunshine today. 11:00 a.m. 54 degrees and 2:00 we're at about 61 degrees. now, for san francisco you can already see a few raindrops here and there and we will be keeping that rain with the very light chance though through the noon hour at 57 degrees and if you notice by about 2:00, there is going to be a little bit of a break and then it picks up, again, into the afternoon. so, let's talk about that hour-by-hour outlook. that rain is going to stick to the north bay through the early morning hours.

by about 2:00, it begins to move south. so, we start seeing some more of this rain kind of moving south. we see a few of these lingering cells just off shore and then pushing ahead towards 6:00, dinnertime. this system moves south, which means by about 4:00 it begins to move to the south bay further beyond the golden gate bridge and that's when san jose has a chance of seeing some rain and santa cruz, as well. so, i know there were a few folks that tweeted me that they might have had some birthday parties outside and sent up a tent. if you have a bouncy house, i hope your party is early on in the south bay because by 8:00 or 9:00, it begins to pick up and so do those winds. winds 20 to 30 plus miles per hour and windier in the mountain areas and we see pockets of moderate to heavy downpours in palo alto and walnut creek. now, overlooking sunday, we are expecting that rain to carry saturday night into early sunday

morning and keep the scattered showers throughout your entire sunday. should be tapering off sunday night into monday morning. now, estimated rain totals, well, they're not going to be a lot. less than 2.5 for two-day totals. less than a quarter of an inch for san jose and half moon bay, as well. although we aren't expected to see see much of that rain total number to go up, we are expecting a lot of snow. which is why there is a winter storm warning that will be in effect at 4:00 p.m. tonight until 4:00 p.m. tomorrow. if you look at this, they are expecting over 30 inches of snow in some areas. if you did have plans to travel up to tahoe, check the road conditions. there is also a beach hazard in effect through tomorrow afternoon. we could be seeing some waves, as well. i don't think a lot of people will be out on the beach. here's a quick check of what you can expect. by tomorrow we see the cold front drop in and the highs in the 40s instead of the 50s and 60s, which is what we've been seeing. those showers have the

seeing that rain off to the north bay and we will see this rain push down further south over the next couple of hours. so, today's forecast we are tracking rain and we're also tracking snow, as well. palo alto expect a high of 60 degrees and san jose 61 and half moon bay 54 and san francisco 57. we're also tracking a drop in those temperatures as the cold front makes its way into tonight. tomorrow we will see highs in the 40s and 50s. definitely a major drop compared to the upper 60s we have been seeing all week. saturday fast forwarding we see the rain stick in the north bay throughout the early morning hours with a few spotty showers along the peninsula and san francisco. but if we fast forward through the lunch hour by about 4:00, 5:00, more widespread rain, but not going to get it all at once. some areas may see some light to moderate rain pours and napa. morgan hill and the santa cruz area, as well. so, if you have any plans outside, bring them indoors because there could be a chance

that by 9:00 we will see some strong gusty winds, as well. anywhere between 35 plus miles per hour. tie down any patio furniture or anything that has a chance to fly away and bring in maybe your pets indoors, as well. we will see the chance of those showers continue overnight into sunday morning, as well. so, sunday, we are expecting scattered showers here and there throughout the day. overcast skies, as well. and then sunday night we start seeing that rain kind of taper off into monday morning we are expecting to see maybe a few scattered showers during your early morning commute. but estimated rain totals right now. we're seeing less than half an inch for two-day rain totals. more along north bay area. expect to see closer to half inch and maybe a south bay seeing some rain. so by about 4:00, that rain really starts pushing south of the golden gate bridge into the next couple of hours. you will notice that it will start getting a lot colder, which is why we are tracking snow. estimated snowfall right now really looking pretty

and we do those things for northern california, the parents of a san francisco art student are trying to figure out how their daughter mysteriously plunged to her death off a cliff in marin county. was it a tragic accident, suicide or something much more sinister? jacks jaxon van derbeken found the case was closed with no answers. >> that's my beautiful daughter. >> reporter: linda talking about erin goldburg a quiet, but playful animation grad student at academy of art university. >> that's what she wanted to do with her animation. smile her whole life. >> reporter: what happened to the 24-year-old back in june 2015 is still a mystery. she took a cab to the marin headlands on that blustery night. she brought her camera along

after researching on the internet the national park services monthly guided full moon walk to the point benita lighthouse. >> erin loved the full moon. she loved the golden gate bridge. what a great opportunity to go and take photos and be in a safe environment because it's a national park event. >> reporter: still, the cab driver told authorities in a taped interview that he was concerned about leaving her there. >> it just didn't seem right to me, but i didn't ask any questions. or anything like that. but to be out there once it got dark, just didn't seem right. >> reporter: she checked her voicemail at 8:00 p.m. 20 minutes after the walk began. at 9:18 p.m., she texted good night mama llama to her mother. no one heard from her after that. the worried driver came back at 9:30 but she was gone. a day and a half later a jogger spotted her body on a remote

beach, nearly 300 feet below the lighthouse. investigators later searched, but never found her purse, glasses or camera. goldburg's mother said the investigator suggested her daughter had taken her own life but it's not clear whether goldburg went on the walk. investigators managed to track down three people out of the 50 there that night. only one remembered seeing goldburg before the tour started. saw the cab and a strange man loitering around the parking area. records show that most of the interviews were done within eight days and over the phone. by november, the park case was closed with no finding about her death. the autopsy was inconclusive. although it discounted suicide given that there were no prior signs and no drugs or alcohol were involved. >> the whole thing was a joke. >> reporter: the family now wants 800 more pages of case files to finally resolve the mystery for themselves. park officials are citing

privacy concerns and withholding them. >> and they're fighting us tooth and nail and releasing information that shouldn't be difficult to release. >> reporter: authorities say they already turned over everything they can by law. meanwhile, park officials no longer favor suicide. they sent us a statement saying thorough and comprehensive investigation suggests goldburg's death was an accident. no evidence of foul play ever surfaced and it's considered to be the least likely scenario, they told us. her roommate of two years, maggie, says the case should never have been closed in the first place. >> she's always really happy. very careful about everything. it doesn't line-up. >> reporter: a year and a half later, friends and family are no closer to knowing what happened to erin goldburg that full moon night. jaxon van derbeken. now to more trouble for the famous mavericks surf contest.
