in berkeley. that's not the only place. we are tracking the low level snow in our mountain areas as well. there's a new option for commuters who need to travel between san francisco and the north bay. a new ferry line that launched about 30 minutes ago. "today in the bay" continues right now. good morning. thanks for joining us this monday. i'm kris sanches in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we are talking about the snow. >> it's wild. >> the national weather service was saying last night they got the largest reports of hail they've had in a long time. once it started warming up, those reports started slowing down. we got all of those great videos from you this morning. this morning if you're waking up, still seeing chilly temperatures in the 30s and 40s. 43 right now in san jose. and if you're getting the kids ready for school, a quick check

of your schoolday forecast. it is going to be a cold morning. definitely bundle up the kids. maybe even scarf on the way. for recess, we do have a chance of still seeing some lingering showers. i think rain boots might also be a good idea, especially if they're outside. probably a lot to of puddles and mud. you don't want them tracking that into your house. by 1:00, we finally begin to see that rain make its exit. we should be clearing up nicely. hopefully the road conditions will get a whole lot better. let's get over to mike for a check. >> traveling over a school zone, folks with umbrellas over their faces are not looking, you be careful for them. looking out on the roadways, slick conditions. we heard about a crash on 101, i'll check that out. the slowing pattern approaching the bay bridge, a slower build,

wall from richmond pass the racetrack to the berkeley curve. steady recovery, but still slow for 580 and west 24 this ripples back further than you might expect. you move well getting in towards the bay bridge. but that slow down might be unusual because of the early started we got there. there were earlier crashes on the span. th the pattern slightly different. a look at palo alto camera. we have slick conditions around the bay, so get out about five minutesly and sl learly and tak. to the santa cruz mountains this morning and 17. low-level snow falling in parts of the bay area. it's a bit drier now, we've seen it sleeting periodically and then there was this. this is new video from highway 9 in saratoga. that's definitely snow. it's been falling over the last couple of hours. this continues a pattern of snow we started seeing over the

weekend. mostly above elevations of 2,000 feet. we've been seeing snow or a combination of sleet and snow on the highest peaks including mt. tam and mt. diablo. these are live pictures from the east bay -- these are not live, these were taken from berkeley overnight where you are seeing snowfall in berkeley welled from the hills there. we'll bring you more live reports this morning coming up in the next half hour. new this morning, relief for commuters in the north. the golden gate ferry's new tiburon san francisco sfervice s up and running. we brought it to you live as the first ferry left about 30 minutes ago. pete is there to show us how the new ferry line works. for the first in 40 years now an expansion. >> good morning to you. the first time in four decades that the golden gate ferry expanded services here to marin

county. we brought you a live look of what that ferry looked like when it was departedi departeding f to golden gate. those discussions regarding expansion began in 2015, taking over the commute runs from tiburon to san francisco. two weeks ago a sublease agreement was reached to take over the line. the ferries play a huge role in reducing traffic congestion on the golden gate bridge and highway 101. up to 25% in some cases. one passenger about to board the ferry said he's happy to see the services in marin county. >> it's a wonderful way to get to work. definitely helps the commuted f commute for other people who have to drive in. we don't. thankfully golden gate saw the

opportunity. we're thankful for it. >> a good amount of folks hopping on that 5:30 a.m. ferry. there will be eight trips per day from tiburon to san francisco starting today. that will be monday through friday. the first depart from tiburon will be at 5:30 a.m. the ferry plans to bring the clipper fare system as well. pete suratos for "today in the bay." happening today, commutedco have another chance to ease congestion through western contra costa county. advisers will be looking for cor commuted corridors. this is the second of six meetings which will be held through march 21st. starting today, concord is getting tough on drivers who are using side streets to try to get around commuter traffic. drivers are no longer allowed to

make u turns or turns from clayton road on to four small cross streets that run parallel to busy treat blvoulevard. the city is following through on a request by neighbors there who are bothered by the cut-through traffic. to the president's first 100 days, it will be another busy day in washington, d.c. as we look live at our nation's capitol this morning. >> president trump is planning on signing a revised version of his executive order on immigration later today. officials say it will be a revision of the order that restricted travel from seven muslim countrcountries. opponents say this creates confusing travel situations and immigration statuses for hundz s hundreds of people. we're also expecting the first overwhelm briefing from the state department under the trump

administration. and dr. ben carson will address his employees today. of course all of this comes after the big news of the weekend. the white house requesting the congress to investigate president trump's claims of wiretapping at trump tower. "today in the bay's" scott mcgrew will bring us a look at those claims and how the fbi is responding to them this morning. that's at 6:45. looking a live look outside from the san mateo side of the san mateo bridge. we see some delays there. we are tracking scattered showers this morning. >> those are your commute times. big, bold letters on the board there. let's get to forecaster vianey arana who has a bold forecast for us in store as well as we are seeing wintry weather in march. >> we are. it was a sight to see, of course things can get dangerous, especially when you involve late-night hours, slick roads. right now we're still seeing 40s in the forecast. we have some changes on the way. we will begin to climb into the

50s for today. we will be slightly cooler in terms of seasonable temperatures. these lingering showers will make an exit over the next couple of hours. right now doppler radar, we can see plenty of activity, and a lot of showers moving offshore. as this moves off from the south to the north, we can see some snowing down in mt. diablo. we are seeing pockets of moderate rainfall along walnut creek, oakland, also some showers. if you're expected to leave in the next 20 minutes in this area, take some extra time and drive very slow. they will keep some moderate rainfall over the next couple of hours. over the next two to three hours, the biggest change will be, well, sunshine. if we fast forward to 12:00, 1:00 in san jose, we welcome a much drier weather pattern as

high pressure builds in let's check the roads with mike. how is it looking out there? >> vianey, after the rain, we have the wet roadways. even if it's not raining where you r you have to deal with slicker conditions. a word of caution we typically give. everything is standard. bay bridge approach a little different there. some slowing approaching san tomas. there was a fender bender reported. chp has not arrived on scene. sounds like a fender bender might leave one vehicle the roadway. speed sensors show a disturbance down there. the rest of the east bay move well. red to orange there. five minutes off the castro valley y a live look at this volume, standard, and we see water on the lens.

good morning. it's 6:12, we're under a microclimate alert. parents, grab that coffee on the go. we're seeing lingering showers and cold temperatures in the 30s and 40s. as you get your kids ready for school, bundle them up and maybe pack some rain boots, it's probably going to be muddy out on the playground. by 1:00, we clear out nicely. look at the drive times. highway 84 at the bottom of the screen, a little extra slow. we talked about changes in the construction zone. i'll outline them coming up. >> the tsa is rolling out new rules for pat-downs which some travellers are saying invasive. before, the tsa had the option to decide what type of pat-down, usually after a metals dee meta

alarm was set off. the tsa says the areas of the body are the same as before. and the pat-downs may be done by an agent of the same gender. in the next couple of days, republicans are expecting to announce their bill that will repeal and replace the affordable care act. it would repeal much of obama care along with eliminating the employer and individual mandates to provide and carry health shurns insurance. under the draft bill, americans would receive a tax credit. the measure would also create state-based high-risk pools. consumer reports will start considering cybersecurity when it review new products. the magazine steteamed up with travel organizations for methods studying how a product can be hacked and how well customer data is secured.

business and tech news. we are a whole six days into the month of march. already uber has had a lousy month. >> a lousy year, in fact. >> we are less than 2 1/2 months into the year. so it seems like, kris, not a goes by that the most embattled company in san francisco has a problem. the latest was the news that broke on friday that uber has a program called greyball. the ceo admitted he needs helping the company. the latest parlor game in high-tech is who should that person and should travis kalanick just quit? greyball is one of a long list of problems for uber. just days before greyball, kalanick apologized for berating an uber driver. around that same time, waymo sued uber for stealing its technology. days before that, an uber vice president resigned, and days before that, new allegations of

sexual harassment. that's just march. stocks coming off a positive week. we get the jobs report on friday. this is the first report covering the time when president trump was the only president. the pope would like to know what would happen if christians treated the bible the way they do their iphones. the pope pointed out we never would leave the house without our phone what if we carry the bible at the same time? a small pocket version he suggests. and free classes online for people who want to do their own startup. companies like air b & b got start up there. you can take the same classes that really big companies got their start from, and you can find out the same information. remember who told you about it. >> you want to be an early investor? >> exactly. >> will any of the incubating rub off? >> that's what i'm thinking. i could give everybody a dollar. angel investor scott mcgrew,

thank you very much. let's look at no snow angel bus interesting video going on here. this is into the newsroom from tahoe. being snowed in, not all that bad. not for that snowboarder. in this video you see him hitting the slope, actually, that's the street outside of his house. heavy snow has blanketed roads and made it hard for people to get around. we've been reporting on another i-80 closure this morning. it's easier gy eier to get arou you're using your snowboard. >> laura garcia-cannon is not here today, she's celebrating her birthday weekend. that's not a secreted. she was in tahoe. what a great day to be off today. >> she was. i saw she jumped on facebook live to show people around. that was cool. they got 13 inches of snow in lake tahoe. it was definitely a sight to see. we are expecting right now those chilly temperatures in the 40s.

still seeing the cold temperatures in the 30s in santa rosa. at least we will be warming up. santa cruz right now, the mountain area, 38 degrees. we will stick with the 30s and 40s at least for the next two hours. then we'll start finally warming up and seeing a decrease in the chance for snow. doppler radar showing plenty of activity. we're still seeing lingering showers off shore. that will keep that rain in the north bay for a little bit longer than the rest of the bay area. that's because it is tracking south to north. a combination of snow and rain, oakland seeing some downpours. the next couple of hours, here are the changes on the way. as we look ahead through monday lunch hour, that's when the rain moves out.

but tuesday we dry out, leaving behind just cloud cover. a lot of folks got stuck out on the roads, let's talk about the road conditions over the next three days. hopefully people have time to come back. i have a feeling some folks don't want to come back to work, especially if you are stuck in a nice cabin up there. yes, laura, i'm talking about you. 30 degrees, breezy conditions. snow showers stick around midmorning. we clear out tuesday and wednesday. we'll see if we see laura back tomorrow. mike, i'll send things over to you for look at how the roads are looking. how is it looking out there. >> we talked about the problems getting do sto sierra, i-80 was open, then closed, then reopened. keep track of that. we're looking to the south bay. that crash north 101 on san

tomas, that did clear from the roadway. a standard flow throughout the south bay. towards the bay bridge. things are different as far as the speed and breakdown. gradual from the east shore freeway, the approach 24, 580 and 880. the incline moves well, you have soupy conditions. so definitely using those windshield wipers, maybe rain in some portions of the commute. back out to the map system, talking about the travel times getting there. you saw that slowing for the upper east shore freeway, under an hour from highway 4 to that scene at 580/88. slower drive on the approach of the bay break. the transit systems, no problems. we have that new furerry system from tiburon, a great expansion service for the system. good slflow of traffic on the rails, water and roadways.

alo social media has americans feeling more connected but also lonelier than. a new study found that adults were twice as likely to feel isolated than those who spent a half hour on sites. people who were nsay social meds face-to-face interaction and the sites can lead to jealousy and a disported belief that people have a happier life. most americans are planning to save and invest their tax refunds this year rather than do something fun. bankrate.com released a study saying 6% of american adults are planning to splurge their refunds on a shopping trip or a

vacation. 27% say they may use it to pay down debt. it's important money, speaking of tax returns, nbc bay area responds to a slowdown involving peoples income tax returns. >> but the irs is not the culprit. there's a widespread procastration problem. >> we dove into the irs numbers and found that millions of people are not filing their returns as fast as they have in the past. through the middle of february, a total of 42.5 million returns were fired. at this point a year ago it was up to 49 million. same for 2015, 49 million. the data doesn't give the 6.5 million in between a good reason to wait this year. more than three quarters of us are getting money back. that's steady year to year. the average refund that risen. yet, we have millions of families letting uncle sam sit on their 3,000.

morning hours. the north bay at 39 degrees. the north bay has a better chance of keeping showers through midmorning. the south bay should be clearing out quite nicely for lunch time. let's check the roads. how is it looking? >> focusing on the boats. the ferries, over the waterways, vianey, we have a cancellation. sf bay ferry from oakland the first ferries of the morning have been canceled. they also expanded service from tiburon this morning and b.a.r.t. has no delays there are some options out there. we have rain coming through the area, slicker conditions. south bay, a crash. east shore freeway a crash near the racetrack, that has cleared off of the roadway.

back to you. >> thank you very much. this is less subtle. a couple weeks away from the start of spring, we're seeing snow in comes of t some parts o area. this is video from the past hour showing wintry conditions in saratoga. sharon katsuda continues our team coverage from the mountains this morning. we almost have to put on the graphics that it's california, not saratoga, new york because it's such unusual weather. >> definitely unusual weather. just five minutes ago, we had blue skies behind me and now it's raining again. i have my hood on. traffic is getting heavier on highway 17. we saw signs coming up highway 17 saying icy rows, sl e yy roa. that's what folks had to do at

skyline boulevard saratoga this morning. thick snow falling there and covering the roadways. drivers had to be many careful. many caught off guard with the changing weather and snow in their commute in berkeley overnight, it got cold enough for snow to fall there, too. you probably heard or saw at least the rain where you lived, but since yesterday many parts of the bay area saw sleet and hail as well. the chp last night warned drivers about slick and slushy roads on highway 280 in south san francisco. the dangerous conditions causing accidents in that area. back here live, looking at the morning commute on highway 17. some of the kids in the bay area are out of school today for different reasons. teacher conferences, my own kids are out. maybe some people will head up to the snow. there's any left in the mountains. do be careful. chp is warning there could be slick and icy roads. i'm sharon katsuda, "today in

the bay." >> thank you very much. the rare sight of snow has brought a lot of viewers to social media, sharing what they're seeing. this is what the summit of mntd mt. diablo looked like. we're seeing some amazing pictures and videos. we are sharing them. we would love to see of them. tag us on twitter or instagram or share them directly to our facebook page. you can e-mail them as well. a developing story. the marines rocked by a new scandal. an investigation underway this morning after nude photographs of women service members were allegedly shared among marines on facebook. the naval criminal investigative service is looking into marines united, a private facebook group. there's accusations that members posted photos of current and retired marines and other women in various stages of undress. there are more than 2,000 comments on that page along with the women's full names, ranks

and duty stations. other pictures were said to be shared through a google drive link. >> to treat fellow marines, to treat fellow service members, people literally willing to do anything to protect this country, even die for this country with such disrespect and disregard. their mothers would be fuming right now. >> the photos were uncovered by the war horse, a nonprofit news organization run by a marine veteran. officials are looking into possible charges that could be filed as those photos were taken without consent. 6:35 right now. happening later today, many drivers say the roads in the bay area have seen better days. the winter weather made this problem worse with those potholes. today political leaders and groups are pushing for more state funding to try to fix it. in a few hours south bay state senator jim bell along with transportation officials are getting together in san jose and formally pushing governor brown to pass a transportation package

by april to fix the roads. the bad roads are costing you in the meantime. drivers are essentially paying $1,000 a year in car maintenance costs from driving these bad roads. caltrans is blocking off a roadway in livermore. in the short-term it will slow down your commute but relief will come later on. 2 1/2 miles of state route 84 are being renovated. they are adding two more lanes there. the closure is in place for the next couple of months. nfl owners may get a better idea about the raiders possible move to las vegas, at least the money of it. the league's finance commitcy t is expected to hold three days of meetings in florida.

topics include the raiders proposed move to vegas and potential financing for how that would happen. because the key backer dropped out in january. new reports suggested that cowboys owner jerry jones could be trying to help land an investor. nfl owners are expected to vote on the issue later in the month. a live look at tahoe city, highway 89, you just see piles and piles of snow blocking part of our camera. that's a caltrans camera. the snow is so bad there that many other cameras are actually down. wo we've been following this story all week long. interstate 80 through the sierra closed again after whiteout conditions shut it down for hours this height of the closu 70-mile stretch of the highway was closed. our reporters at the nba station there say the highway is closed to the state line. we're also seeing plenty snow at home, too. mt. diablo has seen some snow. vianey arana is tracking more

possible snow showers there as well. >> that's right. here's a live look right now. you can't see much of the mountain. here's the weather underground sky cam. beyond these clouds we do have mt. diablo that did see good snowfall last night. we could see the chance of snow showers over the next couple of hours. as we begin to warm up, it's unlikely we'll see it in the lower elevation area. so we'll stick to the higher elevation areas of the mountain. doppler radar showing a lot to of those lingering showers, still lingering around san francisco, half moon bay area as well. some areas just seeing those overcast skies. but over the next couple of hours, a lot of you may be wondering when are those folks coming back down from tahoe, especially after those terrible road conditions last night. the good news is today those snow showers will start breaking apart into the afternoon and evening hours, though the roads may still be slick. as they clear them out, the road

conditions will get better. if they want to stay an extra night, tuesday will definitely be good for travel. 42 degrees. overnight lows fall into the 20s. by wednesday, 49. monterey expecting a nice combination of rain in the forecast. that will stick around for tuesday. the next couple of days we expect a warmup across the bay area. finally the rain and then peeks of sunshine. mike, how are the roads looking? >> we'll look at the pattern around the, no big surprise this morning. word of caution, those slick roadways continue. green is where we see the roadway that vianey is talking about. some wet roadways. we had some overnight slow and if you're going into higher elevations, just be cautious. over here, we had rain that traveled through and passed through the east shore freeway and concord. that may mean more puddling and ponding in lafayette, walnut

creek, pleasant hill. a smooth drive down the east shore freeway. a little more gradual slowing on 24 and 58 on the approach towards the maze. a crash on the bay bridge about 4:30 this morning started this weird pattern shift. it looks standard as far as travel time go getting there on the east bay approaches. san mateo, more slowing westbound. the westbound commute is clear. back to you. >> thank you. we are following a developing story out of north korea, officials are conducting missile tests. coming up, what u.s. security officials are saying about those tests this morning. and the white house is reacting to donald trump's tweets over the weekend. so far this morning it's not going well on this day 46. so far things not going as well for the markets as well. we see the dow jones industrial average dropped about 7 0 point

we will be warming. i'll tell you how much warmer we're supposed to get and a look at your seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> 84 at bottom of the screen is the travel time that stands out. 6:44 right now. following developing news from overseas. north korea is testing missiles again. this comes three weeks after their last test. they fired off four missiles into the sea of japan. some landing as close as 200 miles from the japanese shore. the tests come as a reaction to joint military drills by the u.s. and south korea. the defense department says these missiles pose no threat to the united states. a former central california mayor suspected in court today after authorities arrested him at sfo. anthony silva was taken into custody yesterday after he

returned from colombia. he faces felony corruption and money laundering charges. last week prosecutors issued a warrant for his arrest on those charges. you might remember that last year silva faced charges tied to a scandal at his youth camp. prosecutors eventually reduced those charges to misdemeanors. kris, several dogs, cats, pets missing this morning after fire ripped through a motel in vallejo. dozens of people are without a place to stay as a result. 16 units are gone. everyone did make it out safely from the motel. three people were treated for smoke inhalation. some of those families may have lost their pets in the fire. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. happening today, east bay neighborhoods have a possible solution to a pest problem they're dealing with. there are insects that are posing a major threat to citrus trees there. according to the "mercury news,"

an insect called the asian citrus philid is infecting trees in union city. the fruits are inedible and then eventually the tree dies. the problem is local and crew also begin spraying pesticides today. scott mcgrew has been examining the president's first 100 days in office. today we're almost halfway, day 46. scott, sources in the white house say the president is hopping mad. >> that's right. sources telling nbc news they have never seen him so upset. the president is angry that attorney general jeff sessions recused himself. he did not know that was coming. then the president made the series of tweets on sad moturda morning in which he accused president obama of tapping his tones befo

phones before the presidential election. he offered no proof. president obama's spokesperson said all of this is unfounded. and james clapper, the former head of intelligence, a person who would know about taps by the fbi, cia, said it never happened. he even catches chuck todd off guard. >> at this you can't confirm or deny that that exists? >> i can deny it. >> there is no fisa court order? >> not of my knowledge. >> of anything at trump tower? >> no. >> that's an important revelation at this point. >> indeed it is. that's not all. the director of the fbi said it never happened and asked the justice department to say so. normally that would fall to sessions, but he has recused himself, so it should fall to sally yates, except trump fired her, so it will go to the acting deputy generattorney general. you can expect the daily press conference will be a zoo today. and sean r expected that

today, too, he canceled it. on the today show, sanders will be on and will speak about the president. >> is his information that the former president tapped his phone based on something in the media? yes or no? >> i have not spoken directly to the president, he may have documents that i don't know about. but we think this should be thoroughly reviewed and investigated. >> she speaks for the president but has not talked to the president. aides have tried to cheer up the president by showing him the new travel restrictediing people fr travelinged into the country. he may sign that today.

bringing their 72-hour total to just over 40 inches. that's just this weekend. that's amazing. i know skiers and snowboarders will a good timhave a good time. i'm not the best snowboarder. they always make fun of me because i'm not good at it. the north bay, expecting to see lingering showers in the forecast. these showers will be sticking around. we've seen slick read conditioas out there. at least there's sun light ahead. if you notice by 11:00 a.m., showers exit from the south bay area. we track in some of that sunshine and warm up to the 50s. we're not going to get too hot. will remain nice and cool in the mid 50s. we'll get a break from that rain finally. that will set us up for a warm and dry week ahead. 45 in san francisco. by 1:00, also expect to see a combination of some sun and

clouds, 52 degrees. the next seven days, what can you ex? we keep the showers early morning, they end by the afternoon. by tuesday, high pressure building in. that will kick start a week of a lot of sunshine and warmer temperatures in the 60s. as of saturday, we were tracking a chance of showers, models now are pushing that off to the north. hopefully it will stick to the north, we'll only get less than a tenth of an inch. 70s up ahead. we have a very good week to look forward to, even though it's monday. we have a lot of good days ahead. >> hopefully all of our viewers have many, many good days ahead. that's getting philosophical. the commute is standard. the northbound route starting to kick in zooming in towards the approach towards livermore out of the altamont pass. i learned about a motorcycle crash, rider down in the roadway.

we'll check in on that status. this will slow traffic off of 205. it's not bad this morning. we want to know about the condition of the driver. that's an issue. that makes livermore's drive lighter for 580. over here, this makes the drive tougher. north 84, sam talked about the widening project going on there. for the next couple of months, be paired for closures throughout the day. all those areas throughout livermore and that portion of the valley will have reroutes. shifting around every few days or so the rest of the bay shows a smooth shift. there is the bay bridge approach. water on the lens. you will have slicker roadways still in many parts of the east bay. slow those speeds, but so far the shore freeway moves well. >> thank you. coming up next a look at top stories this morning on nbc bay

suratos is on the ferry, how is it looking? >> we showed you that first ferry leaving 5:30 a.m., this is the second ferry. commuters heading to san francisco. as you mentioned, this is the first time in four decades that the golden gate ferry service has expanded into marin county. they are taking over for the runs for the blue and gold fleet. you can see this shot as we leave tiburon heading to san francisco. there's going to be eight trips back and forth between tiburon and san francisco monday through friday starting at 5:30 a.m. in tiburon, they have coffee and doughnuts for folks on this trip. eight trips total, and we'll have more coverage of this during the midday she. i'll hold my balance here. back to you guys in the newsroom. >> what a great commute. >> nicely done there. we want to take you live to the san mateo side of the san mateo bridge as you get your cup of coffee. tracking scattered showers.

a wet morning commute. you can see that sheen on the road. >> this is a live look from the santa cruz mountains. we have been keeping an eye on low level snow. new video overnight in saratoga, california, showing snowy conditions there. this is a pattern that will continue and we started seeing it over the weekend, mostly elevation s above 2,000 feet. snow has been blanketing even mt. diablo in the east bay. >> enough to key vianey arana busy this morning. snow, sleet, hail you're tracking now. >> conditions will only get better. expect some sun in the forecast. san francisco and inland warming up into the 70s this week. >> very nice. >> you have been monitoring motorcycle crash? >> right, over on 580. overall the bay commute looks good. 580 out of the altamont pass, there is a crash involving a motorcycle. no word on the status of the rider. i'll continue to monitor that. >> very good. that's what's happening "today in the bay."
