with andrea mitchell. >> good morning. wikileaks founder in london this morning saying the documents came from cia cyber headquarters in virginia. and in outpost in frankfurt. this morning both the fbi and cia scrambling to find out who is behind what could be the worst breach of u.s. intelligence in recent history. thousands of documents posted by wikileaks, which it says reveals the cia's secret play pook for hacking. not commenting on whether the stolen documents are authentic. but one senior u.s. official telling nbc news they do contain authentic top secret information. >> at the end of the day what this does is reveal not just u.s. capabilities but gives a road map to america's enemies as to not only how to defend against these capabilities but also how to use them. >> potential fallout terrorists and other adversaries now know

how the cia hacks their smart phones, smart tvs and computers. even getting into encrypted apps. still the biggest question who did it? two sources tell nbc news russia is a major focus given moscow's ties to wikileaks and the hacked e-mails in the 2016 campaign. how did it happen? was the cia hacked, was it an outside contractor? as wikileaks claims, or the nightmare scenario for the cia, a mole in the agency. former officials saying the hunt if it's an inside source likely involves checking operatives travel schedules, contacts, bank accounts. another critical concern how badly has the leak compromised the cia's mission. especially alarming as wikileaks claims they released only 1% of what they have. the cia officials knew there was a breach last year but didn't know what it was. with relations already strained between the trump administration and the intelligence community,

7:07 am
wikileaks, wikileaks has become an agent of the russian federation. and second, tensions between the intelligence community and russia are all time high because of russia interference in our election. >> so jeremy, let's talk about the possibility that andrea brought up which is that it is a mole inside the cia, in other words not a whistle-blower but working on behalf of a foreign entity but is employed by the cia. how plausible do you find that? >> i think it's a situation that investigators will take seriously. it took eight years to find aldridge aims who gave away many of our assets. we don't have the time and luxury to wait eight years. people have to come close to an investigative target and crack down on this fast. >> to be clear, as you well know the hacking tools in the cia's arsenal were used to monitor and surveil adversaries overseas but now it's out. the question is are americans potentially vulnerable to these
7:08 am
hacking techniques used on them? >> i don't think so, savannah. cia operations are conducted overseas against america's terrorists, weapons, against our adversaries, not directed at americans. and once these vulnerabilities if you will in our security devices are out there, the device makers can shore up their defenses. so i think americans devices are not at risk. >> jeremy bash, thank you. >> thanks. turning to president trump and the ongoing debate over his claim he was wire tapped during the campaign by former president obama. we're learning that intelligence agencies may soon be slapped with subpoenas as lawmakers look for evidence supporting the president's claim. this as president trump revealed he's tapped the next u.s. ambassador to russia. peter has more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the white house as you noted challenged congress to investigate president trump's claim that president obama wire

press secretary sean spicer saying this when first asked about it. >> is the president the target of a counter intelligence investigation? >> i think that's what we need to find out. >> reporter: less than 20 minutes later after being handed a piece of paper by an aide spicer circles back. >> i want to be really clear on one point which is there is no reason that we should -- that we have to think that the president is the target of any investigation. whatsoever. >> reporter: now for the first time we're hearing how former president barack obama is reacting to the you be substantiated wire tapping claims. a source close to the former president telling nbc news he rolled his eyes and believes the claims undermine the office of the president. president trump's man in moscow jon huntsman, the former utah governor offered the job to be the next u.s. ambassador to russia according to a white house official with the source close to huntsman telling he's accepted. in may mr. huntsman endorsed mr. trum but called on him to with
