>> there's some softball team out there that should put her on their radar right now. >> that's incredible. wind is the story there. snow is the story for us. >> here's the scene outside of rockland county about 30 minutes outside of the city. it's starting to come down here just after 7:00. >> that's the topper. just when we thought we were headed for spring with some of the temps, millions of americans fighting through a messy, morning commute right as we speak, with late winter storm and ice slowing them down this morning. got it all covered ape let us start with morgan radford, a few blocks north of us in central park this morning. hey, morgan, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. you can see the snow just started falling here in new york, as 39 million americans are waking up this morning under a winter weather advisory. that's as they expect to see heavy rain and snow pounding nine states across the country. from the ohio river valley to the mid-atlantic region and right here in the northeast. some of the areas expecting to see eight inches of snow. but the truth is, we've seen

some delays of that messy morning commute for travelers at airports around the country. the bulk of the delays, happening right here in new york. we expect to see up to three or four inches of snow. for those of us that are from new york or living in new york, this has been a bit of a winter weather whiplash. temperatures were as highs a 61 degrees just yesterday. and this is now the second time this year we've seen snow immediately coming after a day where temperatures were as high as the 60s. in central park, people were going for long runs yesterday. they were playing in the grass. today, it's a different story. we expect to see below-freezing temperatures stretching into this weekend, even after the snow passes in my of the nine states, but this snow is also expected to last until the evening. savannah? >> morgan radford, thank you so much. >> al roker is here. how bad is this thing going to get? >> well, as we expect yesterday, we expect accumulation. but because it's been so warm, most of that accumulation will

be on the grassy surfaces. the roads are going to be wet. if you take your time, you will be okay. it's a wide swath of snow from columbus, ohio, all the way into new england. we have a bunch of snow closures throughout the new york, boston, philadelphia metroplex. we are watching that also. 39 million people as you heard from ohio all the way to new england under some sort of winter threat. this system moves pretty quickly, that's the good news, but behind that gusty winds, falling temperatures. look for the snowfall amounts, jenlly one to three inches, heavier snow out on the eastern end of new england. and then we've got through sunday, another storm system that comes across, cuts a s.w.a. swaut /* swath of snow through the midatlantic states. and then we'll look at coming up in the next half hour -- >> tuesday. >> tuesday could be a more significant storm system, even, in fact, the european model that started to look at this as

president obama, no proof from president trump. his fbi director, not commenting, either. our cameras capturing fbi director james comey at the capitol. nothing from ko comey according to a congressional source. and nothing from president trump either after his new york skyscraper was wiretapped by his predecessor. president obama's team denied it. a senior intelligence source also telling nbc news, it's not true. now president trump's facing a new challenge, a legal one related to his latest controversial ban. the state of washington broadening the lawsuit to block the revised immigration executive order with several other states planning to join. the white house, arguing it's confident in how the new executive order is crafted. >> legal he, there's no doubt that the revised travel ban will

be harder for states to challenge. it's more polished, it's more lawyered and it removes some of the vulnerables in the original ban. >> reporter: the policy push, all about health care. the president tweeting, a new republican bill to repeal and replace obamacare is coming along great. quote, we are talking to many groups. and it will end in a beautiful picture. that tweet, coming around the time this picture was plastered all over tv. house speaker paul ryan's power point pitch. aimed at convincing resistant republicans to get on the bill. >> this is the chance and the best chance we're going to get. >> reporter: in the senate, the bill can only afford two gop defections or it's dead. and as it stands now, at least a half dozen republicans are leaning no. >> we've got lots of time to get this right. i'd rather get it right than get it fast. >> reporter: as president trump deploys his team to sell skeptics on the plan, one of his top officials is raising eyebrows. epa administrator, scott pruitt, for this answer on whether

washington. the white house is warning tech companies to talk to the lawyers before using the computer codes that assange is offering because it amounts to accepting classified stolen material. >> andrea mitchell, thank you. we have breaking news this morning out of south korea. police say two people died today during protests over a court's decision to remove president park geun-hye from office. thousands of supporters climbed on to bus that is were being used as a perimeter that you can see there. earlier, a south korean court upheld park's impeachment for corruption and peddling. now, to the chaos inside a train station in germany thursday. police say seven people were injured by a man wielding an ax at dusseldorf's main rail station. the attacker got away but was capture affidavit he jumped from an overpass. he is a 36-year-old man from the former yugoslavia, living in germany.

the suspect acted alone and apparently has mental problems. a criminal investigation into the nude photo scandal is widening to include all branches of the military. and there's new reports that the explicit photos of female service members may have been posted on social media accounts well beyond the original facebook page. gabe gutierrez is following the story for us. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. the naval criminal investigative service is looking into the allegations that have shocked veterans across the country. the widening investigation, including all branches of the military and potentially many more victims than we first thought. this morning, the scandal shaking the marine corps is growing. it started with nude photos of more than two dozen female service members, surfacing in a private facebook group, called marines united, with nearly 30,000 members. now, according to a report from

business insider, the explicit photos extend beyond the marine corps and one facebook group. to an image sharing group cal d ib. the site is notorious for posting nude pictures of celebrities, like jennifer lawrence. >> there's female service members that will being exploited on the website. they have the photos taken from their instagram feeds without their consent. having them reposted with others asking for nude photos. >> reporter: another private facebook group, marines united 2.0, also sprung up with more than 3,000 members. the marine corps's commandant calling it demeaning and degrading. >> it's an embarrassment to our corps, to our families and to the nation. >> reporter: a spokesperson says we expect the marines united will come forward and notify their chain of command of pages

like it. things may seem to get worse before they get better. >> what these young women are dealing with is significant in the sense that there's lasting reach. and just 30,000 people seeing images or videos that they didn't consent to have released out into the world are there. >> reporter: two of the alleged victims have come forward, including erica butner. >> as a a marine corps veteran, i'm disheartened and disgusted with this scandal. victim-blaming and the excuse that some are giving that boys will be boys needs to stop. >> reporter: a top marine commander will brief members of the house armed services committee on the scandal. next week. craig and savannah? >> gabe gutierrez, thank you very much. now, to strong allegations made by thousands of retired football players, saying that nfl teams administered powerful prescription drugs to keep them on the field. according to "the washington post," a group rerpting more than 1800 former players has filed a lawsuit in federal court

suing that says the teams violated laws governing prescription drugs. team and league officials were made aware of abuses and were slow to respond or failed to comply. some dramatic video to show you now, showing the harrowing hours during a credit robbery in jacksonville, florida. the surveillance video shows it and how it unfolded. you see the hostage pulling a bucket. and you see the suspect holding three hostages at gun point by th and at one point, you see some of the hostages escaping through the door. the ordeal ends after about two hours, a s.w.a.t. team storms the building. thankfully, nobody was injured here and the suspect faces kidnapping and armed robbery charges. a trial starts later this month. al roker is back with a look at the national forecast and more on that little girl. >> i know. just an amazing piece of video. let's take a look, this is

details. controversy surrounding a string of sex abuse cases is recommending that the u.s. gymnastics president resign. he has had the support of the board. but the usoc does not have the official ability to oust him. and now, to the road rage incident that turned into a freeway fight. it happened on a busy northern california freeway. more than a dozen men on dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles, atvs, surrounded a car in san francisco. and then, proceeded to beat the driver. miguel has more on this. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. this was caught by another driver on his cell phone. it happened on the busy 101 freeway in san francisco during rush hour. now, police have the video. what they don't have, are suspects. >> i have 23103 turning

physical. >> reporter: the pack of unruly dirt bikers, including some on all-terrain vehicles popping wheelies, were going down a busy freeway, when they swarmed this white car. >> there's 20 vaf involved. >> reporter: the driver appears to be boxed in by another car. and quickly, up to 15 men, described as a gang on wheels, also surround the vehicle. in video obtained by "the san francisco chronicle," the driver gets out. he's punched and kicked. a melee on the busy 101, during the evening commute. >> they smashed his side windows and kicked in his panels. >> reporter: fearing for his safety, the man who recorded the video does not want to be identified. he helped the driver who was pummeled. >> his leg was broken. his face was bloodied. he had road rash on his arms. >> reporter: the california

highway patrol says wednesday's buttal beaddown is not an isolated zinlt. roving biker groups have caused trouble before. break laws on bridges, and freeways and city streets. one of the most notorious incidents of road rage happened in new york city. in 2013, a family with children inside this suv, was attacked by a mob after an altercation on the road. the driver here said he thought he was going the die. back in san francisco, the highway patrol says this driver could have also lost his life. police don't have any suspects yet. none of the dirt bikes appeared to have license plates. an when they come across groups like this, the highway patrol says if they're not responding the a crime, they often won't chase these groups, as they can be elusive and dangerous to purs pursue. savannah? >> thank you very much.

new legal trouble for president trump. he's being taken to court by owners of a bar in washington, d.c. in a battle over his trump hotel, just blocks from the white house. nbc's peter alexander is there with more. >> reporter: good morning to you. there's only one place on pennsylvania avenue that actually has donald trump's name on it. it's here, trump international hotel, as you know. just blocks from the white house. one competitor is claiming benefits from an unfair and illegal advantage. it's become washington's newest landmark, the trump international hotel, owned by president trump. already a magnet for some of the country's and the world's biggest power brokers. several members of the trump administration reside here, including steve gary cohen and linda mcmahon. >> with the notable exception of 1600 pennsylvania avenue, this

is the most coveted piece of real estate. >> reporter: but here in d.c., they say that competitor is taking business away from their wine bar, cork. >> president trump can be the president of the united states or choose to be a business owner in washington, d.c. he can't do both. >> reporter: cork's owners, who are active in liberal causes, are suing the president, accusing him of unfair competition. saying the hotel's restaurant is luring away customers. lobbyist and diplomats want to curry favor with the president by spending money at his hotel. a lawyer for the trump organization, is dismissing the suit as a publicity stunt, completely lacking in legal merit. still, the hotel doesn't lack for free publicity. it has trump written all over it. last fall's ribbon cutting. a plug from the presidential podium. >> i encourage you to go there if you haven't been by. >> reporter: the president's first official night out. dining at the steak house. >> we turned a property that was neglected for decades and was losing sums of money for the

federal government, into a major revenue producer and job creator. >> reporter: the old post office building is owned by the federal government and leased by mr. trump's company, making the president his own landlord. the new suit says mr. trump is violating the terms of his lease. saying no government official shall be admitted to any share or part of this lease. mr. trump's lawyers say his sons run the family business. eric trump at the hotel thursday, promoting a golf event. the hotel's legal problems aren't likely to end anytime soon. three watchdog groups asked the u.s. attorney in new york to ask whether they are violating the ban on foreign gifts. an argument, trump says is without merit. the hotel has marketed itself to embassies as a top destination. >> it's clear that's a pay to play type of arrangement. you pay money to the hotel, to the trump organization, you will get access to the trump administration.

and that's not appropriate. >> reporter: mr. trump pledged to donate profits from gor s fo governments to the u.s. controversy. his hot spot attracting business and controversy. cork's owners aren't suing for money. they want trump to do one of three things. he can close the hotel and restaurant for as long as he's in office. he can sell the place, they say, or resign as president. matt and craig? >> peter alexander. >> who is matt in this scenario? >> he meant savannah. >> happens all the time, pete. that's funny. he's like, what? >> he was laughing. look at the guffaw. >> reporter: what happened? i didn't even hear that. >> you called her matt. so, she called you peter. >> matt and craig? good. thank you, willard. >> so, you double down. is what what happens in

you have the under the skin fat. the deeper viz visceral fat that's your risk for diabetes, high cholesterol. it's so close to your internal organize organs. a lot of people do crunches and abs. that will not get rid of the visceral fat. the way you node to get rid of it, hard-core cardiovascular exercise, which is code for weight loss. >> work out hard, run, something like that. >> exactly. >> for fat-burning. >> the next one -- >> the back fat. >> okay. >> know it well. >> is there a risk to it? if i said, where is your core, where do you point to? >> a lot of people think it's just the abdomen. but it's also your entire back. you got your trapezius. a weak back or a fat back can indicate a weak core, which can

result in back pain and poor posture and stress on your spine. perhaps the fat back is an indicator of an overlying met battic state that can result in weight gain. for your back, you want to go to strength training. you can go to cardiovascular. but you want to concentrate the muscles of the back. >> upper and lower back. the spine muscles that stabilize. and you want to build up those. for the thyroid, you might have a low thyroid, constipation, fatigue, cold intolerance, you go see your doctor, health care professional, you get diagnosed. and we advocate exercise for people with low thyroid. it's good for muscular health and mood. >> we're moving on to ankles. or cankles. >> our cankles a serious risk?

the short answer is, if it's just fat around the ankle, no. but what if that fat is actually fluid. could that be something indicative of liymph ateam ma. it could be a weakened heart muscle or kidney problems or liver problems. you're going to get the right diagnosis. some people have it because their legs are dependant. and we call that insufficiency. you can't get the fluid back up to the heart. if you have fluid on the basis of just that, where it's dependent and gravity is pulling it down, lower your salt intake and increase your protein. you keep your legs elevated. if it's coming from the heart and other organs, you have to address those. >> and drink water, too. >> to flush out. the last one, what do you think? >> the thighs. do you think there's any

problems with having fat in your thighs? >> medical problem or cosmetic? >> that's a good question. no problem, technically, with having -- >> really? >> with having fat in the tush or in the lelggs. that's subcutaneous fat. if you want to tone it, go ahead. that's not a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. >> if you want to tone it, this might be turning into an interventi intervention. >> natalie azar, thank you. we're going to keep our booties. coming up next, katie will help us. five-ingredient pork chops this morning. first this, is "today" on nbc.

well, this morning on "today food," we're getting dinler on the table diquicker and easier than ever, with recipes with

five main ingredients or fewer. katie lee from the food network. this is one of your go-do dishes, right? >> i love this. we are making hoisen grilled pork chop. >> that's the thickest pork chop i've ever seen. >> that's the porter house of pork chops. it's $8 to $9 a pound. you can have something that looks great for not as much money as a beefsteak would cost. we're going to use some ginger, soy sauce, hoison sauce. and leave them around until room temperature. you want your grill nice and hot and indirect heat, as well. you want to put on pepper for me? >> absolutely.

>> you can start it on the high heat and move it to the lower heat. because they're so thick, they will take some time to cook and you don't want them to dry out. >> one thing i find is it's easy to overcook them. >> it is easy to overlocook the. get a meat thermometer. that's your best friend when cooking meat. it's less about how much time and more about the temperature. a pork chop needs to be 145 degrees to be safe. i usually take it off the grill about 135 and 140 and it will rest and come up. make a glaze. >> you can do this outside, as well. >> if you're going to do it inside, heat up your oven to about 400 degrees. after their seared, you're going to put them in the oven. >> okay. >> we have hoyson sauce here. there's soybeans, chilies, salt, sweet. having an ingredient is going the give you a lot of bang for your buck. >> if i don't have hoyson

sauce -- >> you can use barbecue sauce and put in some of the ginger and garlic. i'm going to sneak and add a sixth ingredient. >> we won't tell. >> that's sesame oil. >> why the es sesame oil? >> i'd adds a lot of extra flavor and it tastes great. after you have seared your pork chop, you want to baste it with this. >> and you baste while you're cooking? >> yes. towards the end. there is sugar and it will burn if you put it on too early. it smells so good. and i flip it a few times after it's been basted and it gets caramelized. >> a lot of flavor. >> thanks for the beer, kately lee. >> it's a chinese beer. >> what's the verdict? >> it's good. it has a nice flavor. i like the sere on the outside. >> that's right. is that correct?

>> we want the bone down here. >> i take the bone off and put it under the broiler. and i have that. that's my prize. yes. >> besides the pork chop, we have delicious sides, too. >> we're going to have rice with it. i'm making a simple steamed rice. one of the keys to getting sometime e steamed rice is to rinse it off first. 2/1 ratio. put that into the boiling water. i put a little butter in it. >> butter makes everything better. >> makes everything better. one stir. turn it down to low. cover it. about 12 minutes. then, you turn the heat off, let it sit for five minutes. and then, fluff it with a fork. and you got perfect steamed rice. >> in addition to the rice, we have snap peas here, as well. >> snap peas are coming in season. springtime. you trim the ends off. these don't have much of a string in them. but if you get a little with

your life knife, you can pull it. i saute those or steam them. they come out great. they're so sweet. and then, we have our pork chop that's been resting. look how perfect this is. >> why is it important to rest it? >> the juices redistribute when you let the meat rest and you get a juicier chop. if you cut into it, they're all going to run it. and look how good that looks. >> that's a good-looking pork chop. >> yes. you want to get a bite? >> i want to get a bite. >> get right in there. and if yu have juices left on the board when it's been roasting or resting, just brush it on the pork chop. >> that's perfectly cooked, versus mine, which are always just a little -- >> pork doesn't need to be cooked to well done. >> that's fantastic. the hoyson sauce. katie lee, thank you. to check out recipes, go to today.com/food. we're going to scarf. back in a moment. this is "today" on nbc. >> send down the bone.

good friday morning at 9:26, i'm sam brock. last night parents in santa clara called police about their own son. now the police response and escalation led to his death last night. police say it started when one of the victim's parents called them saying their son was acting erratically. they did not specify if the man was armed or how it evolved but they first use aid nonlethal approach, taser, before using deadly force. we're told all santa clara police officers wear body cameras but it's not clear if the one worn last night was working during the shooting. an oakland police officer is expected to be okay after his

cruiser was involved in a traffic accident. we reported it earlier live on "today in the bay." this happened on broadway near 51st street. we spoke with police there. apparently the officer was trying to make a traffic stop and in the confusion, another car collided with his cruiser, which then struck a light pole. the officer suffered a cut to his head. he was taken to the hospital for observation. the other driver involved did stay on scene. police eventually allowed him to leave. it is your friday morning and coming up, we have a beautiful weekend in store for you. we'll have your weather right after the break.

good morning. we are waking up to hazy skies and mild temps in the 50s. we're expected to warm up quite nicely to the mid-60s and upper 70s. 73 for san jose. half moon bay and san francisco

along the coastline also seeing some patchy morning fog as well at 65 degrees. we'll stay dry and warm for the next several days. here's a quick check of what you can expect as you head into saturday and sunday for san francisco and inland areas. mike, how are the roads looking? >> they're looking like friday. it means a light flow of traffic. overall, it means the morning commute eases up early on. in the south bay a little slowing for north 87 into downtown. no problems. over by sjc for northbound 101 and late slowing west 237 off 880. dublin, we haven't had a major problem westbound for your commute. that's bren a great morning commute. getting out of the area as well. happening right now, we're following breaking news out of the north bay where san rafael firefighters are on the scene of an apartment fire with possible injuries at 215 bayview apartments west of highway 101 near albert park. the department just tweeted out

a picture saying they have extinguished the structure fire. rick boone is headed that way. he'll bring us a live report at 11:00. an oakland police officer recovering this morning after his cruiser was involved in a crash that closed down a portion of broadway. more news coming up in 30 minutes. test
