good saturday morning to you. it is 7:00. sheer a live look outside as the sun shines over san jose looking from communications hill, and this is a preview of a gorgeously spectacular -- how many adjectives can i use? bay area weekend. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm kira klapper. vianey arana has a look at that gorgeous microclimate forecast for us. >> as you mentioned, you're going to valuate of words, i hope. >> yes. >> that will include beautiful, sun. all the good stuff, because it's going to be very nice.

we're also warming up a few degrees compared to yesterday. look at that dense fog along the peninsula. half moon bay seeing dense fog. i promise, there's a shot behind that. 50 degrees. south bay 52, tritaf-valley 52,d north bay cooler at 43 degrees, but we are expecting a nice little warm-up. here's a look now at that doppler radar. we can just mainly see right now a lot of cloud cover coming offshore. we did see that storm system kind of sink off to the pacific northwest and high pressure dominating over the area pushing all that rain further north leaving us a very dry weekend ahead. a quick check of what you can expect in terms of the next couple hours. we will be warming up very nicely into the upper 60s. it along the coastline, 70s for areas inland, like san jose, and also palo alto, 72 degrees. going to be very nice. >> a lot to look forward to this

weekend, including springing forward tonight. >> uh-huh. >> so we'll stay tuned for more of your forecast later, vianey, thanks. a woman is in custody this morning following an armed standoff in san francisco's mission district. the entire 500 block of valencia street was on lockdown between 16th and 17th for about seven hours yesterday as police negotiated with the armed woman who was holed up in an apartment there. this photo sent to our newsroom shows people in a nearby coffee shop taking cover, waiting for police to tell them when they could get out of the area. it all started just before 2:00 yesterday afternoon at a building called the crown hotel where a pest control worker knocked on the suspects's apartment door. she answered, pulled out a gun. police say the exterminator fled and the s.w.a.t. team called in. a scary situation in the afternoon and evening for people on the block told to shelter in place. >> knock on my door and they, we just need to use your room. so us to control the situation.

>> the standoff ended just after 9:00 last night when the suspect identified so far only as a 60-year-old woman stepped out of her apartment and into the hallway. she was taken to a hospital for evaluation. san francisco police tell us they expect charges to be handed down today. a suspected drunk driver is in custody, expected to face multiple charges after a police chase through three bay area cities. around 2:30 this morning, mountain view police pulled over a mustang on el camino real near highway 85. the driver pulled over briefly, then took off going over 100 miles an hour sending police chasing him into sunnyvale and santa clara. at some point he drove the wrong way into oncoming traffic. police say the driver eventually turned on to the expressway where he rear-ended another car and tried to escape the scene of that crash and got into a scuffle with a santa clara officer injuring that officer.

>> charges from mountain view p dmplt and charge from sunnyvale. >> the drivinger of the mustang, passenger in the car and santa clara officer all taken to a hospital to be treated. a second suspect has been arrested in the death of the elderly woman who neighbors affectionately knew at miss flo. sheriff's deputies now say this woman, jennifer jimenez helped cover up the woman's murder and will face a judge monday. investigators say three months ago zachary cuen broke into flo douglas's east san jose home where he ransacked the home, stole jewelry she was wearing and savagely beat her. she died four weeks later. cuen was charged with her murder in november. a hayward middle school teacher is out of a job after students say she criticized them for taking part in an immigrant protest. we broke this story last month. the cesar chavez english teacher

put on leave shortly after parents complained. the principal sent home a letter to parents saying the teacher's last day with the district was thursday. students told us she humiliated them in class after missing school to participate in a day without an immigrant protest. now to a developing story on the peninsula. the search for a missing hiker continues this morning. an army of volunteerless comb the mountains above woodside to find the woman missing more than 36 hours. bethnee hoaury was staying at a bed and breakfast. she suffers from early onset dementia and is insulin dependent compelling the agency to find her. neighbors in the heavily wooded mountain area say people often got lost hiking there. >> people get lost because there's so many trails that connect with other trails. so -- it's dangerous. >> 16 different bay area

agencies are using off-road vehicles to search the trails. this is about seven miles northwest of woodside. the sheriff's department searched overnight using specially equipped aircraft that can detect body heat. in san francisco, a march and rally calling for president trump to meet with tribal leaders before continuing to work on the dakota access pipeline. a federal judge this week declined to stop construction of the final section of the pipeline. it would pass under a reservoir that provides drinking water to two indian reservations. the tribes and supporters say the pipeline threatens the safety of their water supply as well as their religious rights. at 7:06 on your saturday morning, much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, two people in critical condition after drinking herbal tea from a san francisco store. what investigators are saying you need to look out for. plus, why a local school district decided to cancel its student trip to a popular tourist destination. ♪

==kira/rai= . welcome back. a live look outside from communication hill as the sun shines over san jose. some of the bay area seeing fog this morning, but we expect 60s and 70s today and tomorrow. don't forget, we spring forward tomorrow morning. daylight saving time begins tomorrow. don't drink the tea. that's the health warning about a toxic herbal tea sold in a chinatown shop. two people from san francisco are now in the hospital in critical condition after drinking it. "today in the bay" sheryl hurt that details. >> reporter: the herbal tea purchased from sun wing wo trading company on grant street in san francisco's chinatown. health officials say two people got violently ill after drinking it. >> purchased tea leaves and the leaves provided in a plastic bag. >> reporter: the tea looks similar to this. the bag had no labeling. >> both patients developed symptoms about an hour after consuming the tea.

>> reporter: public health doctor aragon says one of the patients is a woman in her 50s. the other a man in his 30s. one purchased the mixture of tea in february. the other in march. it is unknown if the toxic tea was prescribed for a particular ailment. the only common denominator is the tea contained the ingredient aconite. >> this aconite poisoning, which can come from chinese herbal teas, if not processed correctly, it can affect the heart. it can give them neurological symptoms like tingling and give you nausea and vomiting. >> reporter: can you talk to us tonight about your tea? we went to the location. a man and woman inside did not want to comment. >> we want to let people know that if they consumed any -- any leaves to be prepared as tea from this vendor that they should absolutely just throw it away. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, nbc

taking a live look outside as the sun rises over san francisco. the transamerica bathed in sunshine. the bridge hidden by fog. what the whole bay area is seeing, sunshine and fog. we can all expect 60s and 70s this weekend as we prepare to spring our clocks forward tonight. the students in cupertino unified school district won't be headed to yosemite after all cancelling their annual trip at the last minute. school officials said it was a matter of safety because a woman was killed there last week when a tree fell on to her tent. students from kennedy middle school were on their way there when they decided to turn around. twol oth two other schools were also planning to send students but those trips are cancelled at all. >> i understand it. sad for the children. disappointed for them, but i can understand. >> the district plans to reimburse all parents for the

money spent on the trip. every day 160,000 drivers pass through the east bay's caldecott tunnel. few are aware of the wildlife not far above their cars. showing us what ecologists are doing to find out just how wild it is. >> reporter: you've heard plenty of tales about chickens crossing the road -- those stories probably weren't talking about this road. highway 24 at the caldecott tunnel. for many critters, this road has become a crossing of death. >> we've been documenting over the years animals killed on highway 24. >> reporter: on the hill just above the zipping cars -- nature's highway. here -- >> it's super muddy and wet. >> reporter: in these rain-soaked hills of the east bay regional park district, park ecologists wondering whether animals were using this crossing, set aside as open

half moon bay area, dense fog this early morning. so definitely be careful as you're getting ready to hit the road out there. here's a shot overlooking half moon bay using our weather underground sky cam. 50 degrees now. it's not too cold but compare that to this shot. woodside, looking absolutely clear and stunny as well. we are expecting a nice, little warm-up. but right now, we are seeing quite a different picture in various microclimates, right? all right. south bay right now, partly cloudy skies, waking up to about 52 degrees. the peninsula you can see fog along there. 50 degrees, 45 degrees in the tri-valley. mostly clear in the tri-valley. definitely seeing that buildup of that fog. east bay right now, a nice 52 degrees. san francisco 52. and the north bay, 45 degrees. so we are seeing a combination of partly cloudy and very dense fog. doppler radar now showing that fog building right along the coastline. so that means if you have any plans to drive up, please be

careful on your commute, because here it is. a very low visibility along half moon bay. also seeing very dense fog in the napa area. about a quarter mile in front of you. limited visibility, half moon bay, denser. was about a quarter mile and may have gotten even tighter over the last couple hours. we will see this fog clear out nicely. that's going to make for a very sunny saturday, all across the bay area. half moon bay expecting a high of 65. san francisco, warming up to 60 degrees. palo alto 72. san jose 73. livermore also in the 70s, and even in the north bay area also seeing nice getaway. here's a quick check what you were expect if you have plans to head to napa valley. look at that. seeing that dense fog through the early morning hours, as i mentioned. please, be careful on the drive up there. 74 degrees, and by tomorrow, we should be waking up to clearer skies. 77 degrees in napa, and then by monday, warming up even more by

just a few degrees to about 78. some inland areas might see 80s. here's a quick check, plans to head up to lake tahoe, plenty of snow leftover though some might be melting. your drive, a lot more pleasant. for sure. 55 degrees today. and then on sunday, tomorrow, 56, and then as you head out on monday, warming up into the 60s. monterey looking stunning. expect to see that fog as well early on, into midmorning. 64 degrees. sunday and monday, into the upper 60s. and just a quick repeatminder a daylight saving time. spring forward all the clocks one hour. this happens tomorrow at 2:00 a.m. if you have anything that is battery operated or also the clocks in your vehicles, the microwave clocks all of those, don't forget, because you might mitt out on fun plans on a sunday. that means, yes we do lose an hour of sleep and we do get later sunsets and a later sunrise only tomorrow. over the next seven days a quick check expecting high pressure

bay area agencies have been scouring the trails about seven mimes northwest of woodside. sheriffs searched overnight using specially equipped aircraft that can detect body heat. a federal judge revoked the bond for the wife of the orlando nightclub shooter. remaining here in the bay area at the jail. the decision reverses an oakland judge's earlier order to grant her bail. she was arrested at her parents home in january. her husband, omar mateen killed 49 people at the pulse nightclub last june. she has pleaded not guilty to aiding and abetting her husband as well as obstruction of justice. president trump's revised travel ban is sparking protests nationwide including one yesterday near city hall in san francisco. the protest centered around immigrants from yemen. yemen is one of the six countries on his new banned list. also protests today, yesterday, rather, in new york, michigan and virginia. for immigrants from all six

countries listed in that travel ban. there are sanctuary cities and churching and now there are sanctuary restaurants. activists and business leaders gathered in san francisco to show support for so-called sanctuary restaurants. the movement led by the golden globes restaurant association-oassociatio -- gold gate organization. participating restaurants take steps to protect workers who may be targeted by immigration officials. they also educate staff and customers on their legal rights as immigrants. >> we need to go forth and educate the immigrants that are workers in any business here in san francisco. so they're not frightened to go out. >> there are more than 300 sanctuary restaurants nationwide. when she speaks, people listen, and a lot of people wanted to see her at stanford. supreme court justice sonia

month. clearly a housing crisis but who's to blame? pointing a finger at airbnb. now the company is fighting back. here's our report. >> reporter: doctor lisa cohn is a psychologist, homeowner and single mom, despite her private practice and ph.d. she says she still struggles to make ends meet in high-priced san francisco. >> it is becoming harder and harder for middle-class individuals and families to stay in the city. they're being forced out. >> reporter: lisa and her wife frances had always hoped to raise their daughter together in san francisco, but frances' life was cut short. she died in a tragic accident scuba diving. >> i thought we would grow old together. >> reporter: emotionally, must have been hard but financially, too. >> frances -- earned two-thirds of our family income, and the bottom line is, this is a hard

city to make it in. >> reporter: lisa had hoped to begin earning extra money by renting out her place short term. but says she decided against it after learning about the city's mandatory registration process for hosts, requiring homeowners to get a business license and pay a $250 registration fee. >> i don't think it's anybody's business what i do with the rooms in my house if i'm living here. >> reporter: the american hotel and lodging association is a fierce airbnb critic and competitor and just released a new study that found a growing number of airbnb hosts are turning homes into full-time hotels. the study lookedings in san franciscoened neighbors counties and found more than 700 homeowners listed multiple properties on airbnb. a violation of san francisco's housing laws. >> very little home-sharing and too much home-stealing. >> reporter: a consultant for the american hotel and lodging

association. >> the problem is, too many units have been converted to full-time tourist accommodations. >> reporter: airbnb calls the study misleading and inaccurate saying the hotel industry is simply trying to price gouge consumers and squash their competition. for the past seven months, airbnb has also been locked in a legal battle with san francisco. airbnb sued its hometown to block a new law slap home-sharing companies with pricey fines and possible criminal penalties if they post rental listings not registered with the city. >> it is far more difficult for uber to check with the bmv about the validity of someone's driver's license than it is for airbnb to check to see whether or not somebody is registered with the city. >> so this is your place? >> yes. >> you don't live in the building? >> no. >> no. okay. >> reporter: our undercover investigation last summer xpop these are being used.

1,800 homeowners registered to rent out their home. at least 78% of san francisco hosts are apparently breaking the law. we also learned san francisco is issued more than $1 million in fines to 483 illegal rentals over the past two years. >> i think there's a number of people that exploit the housing market, and i don't think single property homeowners like myself, are those people. >> reporter: lisa cohn worries more restrictions to be on the way but still hopes to begin renting out her home this summer so she and her daughter can head out of town on vacation. >> it would make life easier for you and your daughter? >> make life easier for sure it would. i mean, everybody knows how expensive it is to live in the city and that's why many, many families leave. >> reporter: the city's office of short-term rentals proposed cutting down the registration fee for homeowners looking to

rent out their place. the plan would have cut the current price of $250 back down to the original fee of just $50, but no one on the board of supervisors decided to sponsor that legislation. meanwhile, lawyers for airbnb and san francisco, guys, are due back in court next month. >> bigad shaban for us. if you have a comment, call us or send an e-mail. 7:54 now. just two weeks before a peninsula ice rink set to close, a major coup for those fighting to keep it open. members of the community spent four years rallying for the shopping center in san mateo to reopen its popular ice rink. the owners wanted to use the space for new development and offering the city millions to let them tear it down but suddenly reversed course and announced they're reopening the rink after all. >> it's tremendous. >> incredible. >> this is huge. people coming to me this morning
