this morning the search continues for more suspects. and amazing video for you to see, and happening today hours away from one of most anticipated hearings on capitol hill. we are live as fbi director james comey prepares to testify about russia's potential hacking of the presidential election. >> and it may be the first day of spring, but that doesn't necessarily mean sunshine in the bay area. meteorologist kari hall tracking not one but two storms on the radar this morning. "today in the bay" continues right now. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. sam brock has the day off. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. first day of spring and another storm. sfa at this point we need it. it's been nice and dry, temperatures have been warming up well above where we should be, so i think it's pretty good that we have some rain in the forecast. it doesn't start out this morning but will be here later on this afternoon. it's all clear as you step out the door. it's 58 degrees in the south

bay. 54 degrees in san francisco and 52 in the north bay, a chance of sprinkles there early. and some times of rain, especially this afternoon. the rain becomes more widespread later on this evening as that storm system rolls in and the next several days will be very unsettled. so i'll talk about the time line coming up in seven minutes. mike has delays for concord and san jose. >> related to earlier crashes, both have cleared now. yes, the concord crash has cleared. we'll show you the overall view. you can see traffic flows nice. unexpectedly slow drive for highway 4 will add about 15 minutes onto your drive out of antioch, pittsburgh, and bay point, heading towards port port port chicago highway. northbound 101 from san jose, adding about five minutes. officers say at least 30

off-road vehicles and motorcycles were involved in a sideshow. >> pete suratos has details on the string of events that led to at least one arrest. no doubt scary for the other drivers. >> reporter: yeah. definitely. good morning, scott and laurie. we're talking about 30 atvs and dirt bikes traveling east bound on the bay bridge last night where the sideshow took place, evading police and distracting drivers according to chp. chp sent us new pictures of at least two of those dirt bikes being impounded. several folks were detained as a result in oakland. one person arrested in san leandro. but of course this has been an ongoing issue on the bay brim as well as specifically in oakland. show you guys some video. this is back in july of 2016. a driver arrested for doing doughnuts on the bay bridge. that's quite a sight, seeing that on the bay bridge, a sideshow taking place.

more video, november of 2015, cars impoumded in oakland as it related to a sideshow. the good news is the saism unit was capturing footage of this latest incident that took place on the bay bridge, so there could be more arrests on the way. live near the bay bridge, pete suratos, for "today in the bay." ? thank you, pete. in less than an hour one of the most controversial and talked-about hearings will get under way in washington. fbi director james comey will be called to testify about russia's hacking of the presidential election. "today in the bay's" jay gray is live in our nation's capital with details. it will be a busy week, jay. >> yeah, scott. you're absolutely right pap full plate here, not business as usual. you talked about that intelligence committee hearing, expected to get under way in less than an hour and really increase the spotlight on allegations of spying and wiretapping, also this week, the administration looking to put a more lasting stamp on the supreme court.

>> congress, you saw that a little while ago. >> reporter: the start of what will be a critical week for the trump administration. later this morning, fbi director james comey and nsa chief mike rogers will appear before the house intelligence committee speaking publicly for the first time about allegations of russian hacking during the election and whether members of president trump's team may have had ties to the situation. >> the onset of the investigation, there was circumstantial evidence of collusion, there is direct evidence i think of deception. >> reporter: opinions are divided along party lines. >> there's no evidence of collusion. >> reporter: leaders from both parties have said there's no evidence to support president trump's twitter accusation that the obama administration wiretapped trump tower, an issue that's expected to be a big part of today's hearing as well. >> it was a reckless statement. he charged the former president with a criminal act. he had no evidence to support it. >> reporter: also this morning on capitol hill the judiciary committee starts confirmation hearings for neil gorsuch, the

court nominee to replace justice scalia. >> out of mainstream thinking will cause filibuster and every tool at any dispoe sal to block his nomination. >> reporter: jay gray, nbc news, washington. 6:05, this is video of an rv fire in concord that left a man in serious condition. witnesses called 911 after hearing an explosion. the rv obviously engulfed in flames. firefighters say the man ran out of the rv and had burns all over his body. the fire started here at but a boou kanaan circle in pacheco at a public storage complex just before 11:00 p.m. the victim is being treated at the local burn center. >> we arrived to find an rv fully involved and a burn victim that suffered second and third degree burns over 80% of his body. >> the fire is now out and still under investigation. but we know a gas can is somehow involved.

happening today, a woman accused of helping cover up the death of an elderly woman actually known as miss flo, is expected to is enter a plea. authorities recently arrested a 19-year-old jennifer jimenez, accused of helping conceal the death of flo doug last, who died last september in her east san jose home. investigators say jimenez is the girlfriend of zachary kuehne, who prosecutors say broke into the home and savagely beat douglas. we'll continue to watch that story. jimenez charged with being an accessory to murder and obstructing justice. all right. we're always looking for some good news here on "today in the bay." guess what? your commute may be a little easier in the east bay this morning. we have new video of an on-ramp that is set to open today in san pablo for interstate 80. the transportation authority says it will hope the new ramp will reduce congestion, make it safer for bikers and pedestrians. we have a map showing the location of the new ramp is just

off san pedro dam road. once that ramp reopens or opens, they'll close the old ramp so, don't try to use that one. that's at el portal drive. jool it is 6:07. happy monday, and welcome to spring. here we go with some rain in the forecast. going to see this storm system moving in for the next couple of days. bringing in off-and-on rain. we started this morning dry, going to see the clouds increasing through the morning and early afternoon. so far just a few spotty light showers. grab the umbrella in case you want to be prepared for any type of weather today. lit start to warm up. some peaks of sunshine. then the clouds move in and the rain will begin in the north bay with pockets of heavier rain moving in later on this evening. we may even have some thunder and lightning between late tonight and throughout the day tomorrow. it will be quickly changing also as we go through the week. we will talk about how much rain to expect coming up in five

minutes. heading now over the mike starting with the south bay. looks a little better? >> a lot better after the earlier crash. we were worried about this problem for the bay shore freeway. your whole bay shot. a smooth drive and these sensors don't look anything out of the normal. northbound 101. this crash at probrokaw had thi tied up back to mckee. covered nicely for the bay shore freeway but folks had shifted to highway 87 so a little heavier past sjc and 880. south bay drivers are doing okay president get back to your standard route and flow. highway 4 recovering as well. crash cleared about 20 minutes ago, still backed up from railroad avenue. that might see more avenue, railroad, kirker pass and down toward the walnut creek area. the rest of your east bay freeways. those times looking good. 680 through pleasanton. same for hayward and san leandro. the mass transit systems are

it's 6:12. let's get a live look outside at san jose. the temperature trend for the morning into the afternoon for santa clara will be starting out in the low 60s at 11:00. up to the mid-60s today and the rain begins to move in during the afternoon. between this evening, tomorrow, and early on thursday, we are looking at the potential of up to an inch of rain for parts of the bay area. the north bay also may get an inch of rain, but a little more for the santa cruz mountains. we are trying to make up for a very dry month of march. we'll talk about how much rain

is average, how much we've had, and how much is in the forecast coming up at 6:17. >> great drive from the upper east shoreway. toll plaza, you have to wait. a follow-up for you, if you're driving on the bay bridge and notice lane closures near the tunnel, caltrans has begun work on repairs to the tunnel more than a year after a large chunk of concrete crashed onto the roadway. in that case, a motorist narrowly escaped the falling concrete. crews are repairing hundreds of potentially corroded spots. most of the weakened area has posed no threat to drivers. most of us wake um a little sleepy on a monday morning but make sure you're up and alert before driving to work. safety experts are shedding light on the dangers of being sleepily pe bind the wheel. drowsy drives cause millions of crashes and thousands of deaths.

1.2 million accidents an 8,000 fatal crashes were caused by drivers that weren't well rested. today a san diego conference will announce a plan to combat the problem by the national highway safety administration. >> compared to an impairment like drinking which you might not think you're impaired but you are, and it can come on without much warning at all. >> experts say roll down the windows, turning up the radio or even drinking coffee is not enough to stay alert. so if you find yourself at that point, you really should just pull off and take a nap. business and tech news now. wall street could start the week in the red. futures are low they are morning. >> markets coming off a positive week. it was a mixed session friday. look for data this week on home sales and durable goods. several fed officials are talking as well. this after the central bank hiked interest rates last week. dow is down 19, the nasdaq up friday a fraction to 5901. your personal information may be publicly available

online. if you shop at saks fifth avenue. tens of thousands of e-mail addresses, phone number, even ip addresses linked to customers were accidentally posted online for anyone to see. the information was exposed by a canadian company hudson's which operates saks fifth avenue websites. the leak also left shoppers vulnerable to hackers if they were using an open wi-fi network. lastly, amazon wants to rate what's in your closet. it has a new feature for prime members calmed outfit compare. here's how it works. you upload photos and a real stylists will judge you. to address privacy concerns, only staffers can see those photos. and it removes the images when you delete the photos from the app. today is the first day of spring. vacation season is right around the corner. >> projections say the skies will be crowded this spring.

airlines for america, an industry trade group, is projecting about 145 million passengers will fly globally on u.s. carriers in march and april. that's up 4% from last year. and it translates to an extra 89,000 daily passengers. they're adding 100,000 additional seats to meet demand. folks are on the go. they are in the bay area. a little rain. >> a little in the forecast for the next couple days. throughout the week it will be off and on. it's not raining just yet. grab the umbrella just in case because we will start to see some of that spotty rain developing especially this afternoon. live look outside at emeryville, very nice start. we've had such nice weather, but don't you think it's about time we get some rain in here? we'll take a look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. you'll see a lot of icons with some rain on it, but that doesn't mean it will be raining all week long. so we'll talk about it. as we get a live look outside at san francisco this morning, a

dry start with some mild temperatures. we are now at 58 degrees in oakland. in san francisco, 56 degrees and 52 degrees in santa rosa. a little bit of a cooler start there. and in morgan hill, where it's 49 degrees. and then as we go through the day, we are looking at 66 in san jose. gilroy up to 68 degrees. for the east bay, going to see some midup toer 60s if danville today, 66 and 64 degrees in belmont. heading into san francisco today, the outer sunset will be at 64. the north bay looking at 60 degrees in santa rosa, while napa is at 64. this is what we will change our weather over the next couple days. going to see the storm system bringing several waves of rain pnd it's farther to the north now, seeing the showers kind of lifting to north. so far we've only seen a couple spotty light showers so it's all dry now. looking at the time line for what to expect over the next couple of days, a little bit more of some widespread rain later on this evening, even a

chance of some thunderstorms and small hail. now, we've only had about 0.3 inches of rain in san jose, but with three storm systems moving in this week, the second one on wednesday and then a third one on friday into saturday, and we may also see some more rain next week. so the month of march may be ending on a wet note. as we are going to see the potential of about a half of an inch of rain for areas south of the golden gate bridge between now and monday of next week. we may be measuring over 3 inches of rain for northern s o sonoma county. farther to the south and those rainfall amounts get lighter. i'll keep you up to date on all of this. i've been tweeting out updates this morning and well eel continue to do that throw the week with at least a couple inches of rain through the north bay and santa cruz mountains. temperature-wise, much cooler. we're in spring now, but lit feel more like winter as we drop those highs back to 56 degrees for the middle of the week in

san francisco. inland areas, up to the upper 60s today. and then dropping back into the upper 50s by the end of the week. this weekend will not be as nice as the weekend we just had. we will see some more rounds of rain moving through. as we head over the mike now, settling into your monday morning commute. >> and a more typical monday. early in the show, we had a couple of bigger crashes, concord and san jose. they have sorted themselves out. now we had recovery for the south bay. we have a new crash now northbound 101 registering just north of trimble and so we'll track the updates from chp. no additional slowing shows up. the earlier slowdown on 87 has cleared. we're looking here toward the trivalley. smooth flow of traffic for 84-80 and 880, typical as folks travel south of the 580. a smooth drive. no problems or surprises here.

a recall at walmart. the extra large people pizza were pulled last week due to possible listeria contamination. no illnesses have been reported, but anyone who purchased the pizza is being told to throw it away or take it back for a refund.

at 6:23 this morning, training to save a life. san francisco public library staffers may soon be able to treat heroin overdoses. the idea came after a homeless person died in the civic center library restroom in february. the chronicle reports the city librarian told staff the decision won't be made until the issue is fully explored but he added if it was actually approved it would be voluntary. the main library seeing a large number of homeless people and opioid abuse is increasing. technology is opening perspectives about dementia. virtual reality can give people a chance to ebs peerps dementia. they want people to understand what it's like for people with dementia. simulations include getting a shoe insert to make walking more difficult, gloves for coordination and flaszs and earphones that make it more difficult to see and hear.

>> i can walk in their shoes, i'm much more able to be able to understand what might be going through and how to deal with it. >> better care for patients, hopefully a way to better understand their condition by simulating it. >> whatever we can do to help. that's nice. nbc bay area responds with a mountain view man who says t-mobile sent him to a debt collector. >> even though he says the company had nothing to collect. roy timmerman said he closed out his t-mobile account in 2015 so, he stopped the auto payments from his credit card. but he says t-mobile kept trying to charge his card. those charges didn't go through since roy had turned off the auto pay, but t-mobile later sent him to collections for return payment fees. roy says he tried to work it out with t-mobile but got nowhere. so he reached out to us and we contacted t-mobile. next thing you know, roy says he gets a phone call from the company president's office saying his balance was now zero.

good monday morning to you. taking a peek outside. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. get's get your spring forecast. >> it's been spring for about thee hours and sunrise this morning at 7:11 in san jose. it's all dark out there now and we're starting to see some clouds rolling in as we get a live look out there. in willow glen it will be in the upper 50s at 9:00. we'll go slightly above average, reaching 67 degrees, a lot of clouds throughout the day, and the rain won't be far behind. we'll see showers moving in later this evening. a look at how much rain we could see and more on the time line coming up. also getting you ready for the weekend. i know it's only monday. that's coming up t 6:38. wz 'head over the mike, we get an update on the road conditions. >> okay to look at the weekend. i look two or three weekends ahead. looking toward the roadway, a smooth drive. you need to look ahead at least as far as a good distance away, but you can because the driving

conditions are so great. south bay no surprises after earlier crashes. same for the east bay and the concord area. here we have a slower drive coming down the upper east shore freeway. westbound 80 still slow coming down pinole valley road. we'll track that. add another five minutes onto your expected commute just for the time become, down from car key nas bridge to the toll plaza. the east shore tollway moves well. 24-minute drive, gift a half an hour from highway 4 because that crash hasn't cleared as far as chp is concerned. back to you. 6:31. today opening arguments begin in a gruesome murder trial that captivated headlines across the nation. >> a teenager who admitted to killing a 9-year-old discovery bay boy will be in court. bob has the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott and laura.

oral opening arguments taking place in a couple hours from now in the contra costa superior court behind me. 20-year-old william schulz accused of murdering a 9-year-old jordan omgren in the family home in april of 2015. schulz had been sleeping over the house with jordan's older brother, schulz's best friend at the time. that next morning schulz used a hunting knife to stab jordan several times. jordan's family rushed the 9-year-old a hospital where he was pronounced dead. in a jailhouse interview a few days late we are the "contra costa times," shumz confessed to the crime, said he wanted to see what it was like to kill somebody before the world came to an end, which he was convinced would happen soon.

a deputy convinced schulz to go to the hospital but a doctor said he was not a threat to himself or others and discharged him. the mental health will be a key to the defense. the prosecution contends while schulz might have mental health problems he knew what he was doing when he allegedly killed his friend's younger brother. live in martinez, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. we are expecting to hear more about what went on during a kay c chaotic and bizarre police shooting on friday. it began with reports of a naked man chasing a mother and child and leading police on a car chase. it ended when police shot him. kris sanchez live at the san jose police department. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning. we will hear from that mother who was with those children as she was chased allegedly by that naked man. we do have video to show you, but we want to warn you before we roll it it is disturbing and

might be hard to watch for some folks. [ gunshots ] senator those are some of the shots officers fired on that suspect on friday afternoon. the suspect led police on a chase. they shot at him and the truck he was in lurched forward. all of this happened in a busy grocery store strip mall in west san jose about 50 feet from people inside a restaurant and a cell phone store. the incident started miles from the shooting where investigators say the man stripped naked, started chasing a woman and several children. here's how that woman remembers what happened. >> of course kids never see it will guy, crying, screaming, never. i just met him one time, and he was looking okay. >> reporter: following the shooting, officers pulled the suspect from the truck. he was taken by ambulance to the

hospital where he remains this morning. today we know that the san jose police department are reviewing the body camera video from those officers who were involved. we hope to hear perhaps more about that. but whatever they reveal we'll make sure you know it too. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, kris. former 49ers wide receiver dwight clark known for the catch of candlestick park says he's been diagnosed with als, better known as lou gehrig's disease. the emotional announcement was followed by an outpouring of support from friends and family and fans. clark said he got the diagnosis after visiting six neurologists and three als specialists. he wrote about the symptoms on his blog saying he can't run, play golf, or walk any distance. fans expressed support for clark in response. >> i feel bad for him, he's great player, but he'll get through it i'm sure. i always remember him making that catch. >> in blog, he says he suspects

his years of playing football may have led to the diagnosis. here you see that catch. 49ers ceo jed york said in a statement clark will receive the full support of the team. the case of a bay area man once on the run for 15 years is coming to an end. closing arguments in the trial of former fuj tich frank montenegro will happen in just a few hours. he was an elementary school teacher in fremont who was accused of molesting two students for several years. he escaped to mexico and police got a tip he was in los angeles. good news for drivers stuck with parking tickets. leaders in sacramento will discuss new legislation to create payment programs for tickets. that bill is made to help low-income driver who get caught in the downward spiral of late fees, eventually losing their car's registration as a penalty. two more bay area counties could receive federal aid after this year's storms. jerry brown is asking the trump administration to help california rebuild.

he requested aid for contra costa and solano counties, which are in good company. nearly 50 other counties remain in a state of emergency from those storms. brown is also requesting aid to rebuild the oroville dam. it is just releasing water again after nearly collapsing last month. it's 6:37. we're coming off of a dry weekend with some sunshine and then as we head into this weekend, quite a few events going on including justin herman plaza, the rally help fest, and it will be 58 degrees. a chance of rain in the forecast. this is a look at friday with some widespread rain moving in. this rain will be moving out early on saturday. there will be times when you can get out there and enjoy a little bit of sunshine and some drier conditions. but another storm system will be heading in late on sunday. so at this point, looks like the rain will still be off and on. i'll be fine-tuning this as we go through the week and helping you make outdoor plans.

and now as we head over to mike, we are getting an update on the roads and where we may be schlieing down. >> we'll be slowing in expected patterns. what we're looking at for the east bay pushing towards the peninsula. i am watching one crash at the top of your screen in san francisco. it's reported just off the bay bridge. i have no detail on that except for that it's very close to 101 where it comes off of interstate 80 and the skyway. we'll watch that. in the south bay and over in the east bay, things move pretty predictable as we talk about the patterns. we have this crash, i was tracking it. it has cleared as we suspected. westbound 80, pinole valley road, recovery from san pablo avenue past the season. slowing through richmond, which is typical. berklee, another issue. there may be a dump truck somewhere around gillman. i'm going to swing that emeryville camera around to see if we can find anything going on. traffic flow looks pretty light for a monday morning.

upper 60s and a chance of rain for the evening. our rain chances get better later tonight, maybe even some thunderstorms. we'll talk about it coming up in five minutes. travel times, 680 at the top of your screen. looks great down sunol and pleasantton and 688 down through hayward, a nice drive, nothing unexpected. we're down to about your 50s. wish i had better news to report. authorities have not yet revealed the identities of a father who shot his daughter then himself in a murder/suicide in capitola. it unfolded yesterday afternoon in a parking lot at the capitola mall. police say a woman called 911 saying her husband was at the mall and was suicidal. the 36-year-old man and his 8-year-old daughter were found inside the car. >> we do know based upon your investigation that the family was together for a portion of the day at the mall prior to the tragic outcome here. >> so far, authorities are only saying the family is from

watsonville. happening today, jury selection in the case against the former penn state president accused of mishandling complaints about jerry sandusky. graham spanier is accused of putting children at risk by failing to report sexual abuse committed by the school's former football coach. spanier is charged with conspiracy and endangering the welfare of children. each charge carries a maximum of seven years in prison. happening today, hearings to fill the open supreme court seat will begin. president donald trump is starting the process to replace antonin scalia's seat. the top choice for trump is judge neil gorsuch. federal appeals court judge from colorado. gorsuch will deliver his opening statement before the senate judiciary committee today. house lawmakers on thursday expected to hold their first vote on a health care bill many believe could be dead on arrival. that is unless major changes can be made to it between now and then.

moving in today, also getting the kids ready this morning. it's nice, mild, dry as of now. but they may need the rain gear later on this afternoon. as we will start to see some rain moving in, especially for the north bay as temperatures reach into the low 60s. this is what it looks like on the bigger picture out there right now. this storm system starting to roll in. the rain is still well to the norte of us. and we'll continue to see the cloud cover increasing throughout the day. so far we've only seen a few spotty light showers, but we'll get some more coverage on the radar later on tonight. and this is the way it looks as we go hour by hour. going to start to see that rain and some light sprinkles initially. starting out in san francisco and the north bay. by noontime into early afternoon. and then we start to see the pockets of the heavier rain indicated here by the yell loos and the oranges. well, that moves into the east bay by about 8:00 or 9:00 tonight. later on, after 10:00, we will have a chance of some thunder and lightning. you may be awakened by some

one person in custody, several others detained after what the chp was a sideshow on the bay bridge involving the chp, about 30 off-road vehicles and dirt bikes. it happened last night in the eastbound direction. officers only managed to detain several bikers later in oakland and san leandro. today house lawmakers hold an open hearing on the investigation into russia's involvement in last year's presidential election. fbi director james comey is expected to speak as is mike rogers, the director of the nsa. the hearings will begin in just a few minutes. 7:00 a.m. our time. you can stay on top of those hearings throughout the day with nbc news and complete coverage of the hearings will start at 7:00 on the "today" show. again, just a few minutes from now. 6:56. new this morning, video of an rv fire in concord that left one man in very serious condition. witnesses called 911 after hearing an explosion. the rv was fully engulfed in
