ne. a wet and windy morning commute on this wednesday. our radar is full of color, as you can see there on your screen. as we take a live look outside at the golden gate bridge and we see the rain on the pavement as well. we have you covered as you hit the roads this morning. >> thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez in for laura. >> and i'm sam brock. there is a lot of color on the radar. we saw yellows and oranges on that radar. >> yes, because that's indicating heavier rain. visibility may be low and the rain is really coming down. so looking at some of those downpours that will occur, it's not widespread and we will not see this all throughout the day.

look at these road conditions heading out through oakland as you see the rain pouring. we'll see more of this. we've also had a few lightning strikes the the rain has shifted off to the east as far as the heaviest downpours. but still, pockets of rain that may slow you down as you head out and some of the heaviest rain is moving through the south county. that will continue through the next 25 to 35 minutes. rain in sunnyvale and as we head north to fremont as well as the tri-valley and pleasanton and livermore, rain is heavier there within the next few minutes. as we ged a look at redwood city, also pretty heavy rain at this point. the rain tapers off this afternoon. what to expect with another round of rain moving in coming up in a few minutes. now as we had head over to

michael, lots of rain on the road. >> that's right, kari. we're seeing more rain happening right now and down in the south bay moving off to the south of there and east in towards the alta mount pass. the latest northbound 680 at san ramon valley over on the shoulder. way out here, eastbound around grant line road. let's get a look at the map. a spinout occurred there. they have it off to the shoulder. the conditions in dublin, very soupy. be careful out there. back to you. >> mike, we appreciate that. let's stay in the east bay. kari was talking about the storm. >> pete, you don't have on your hat or umbrella.

have you hit a break? >> reporter: i thought i caught a break but we're off camino pablo road in orinda. flooding was occurring on the streets. there were sandbags in place and this morning it looks like they were able to get that water off the roads. now i want to show you video about half a mile west from where we're standing at the village center when you saw a good amount of flooding in some of the parking lots, specifically, the u.s. post office parking lot. we drove by both of those areas. it looks like it's cleared up. as i mentioned, the rain started coming down. it's been on and off so far this

morning. we'll continue to monitor those conditions. another update in the next hour. live in orinda, pete suratos. the rain keeps oncoming as we look at san francisco. you can see the clouds there and the raindrops hitting the lens of the camera as well. we'll check in with bob redell who is monitoring conditioning for us in the next half hour. let's stay tuned for the microclimate weather alert throughout the morning. we'll keep you updated both on air and online. we're following breaking news on the other side of the country overnight. this is a look at what developed hours ago. a massive seven-alarm fire in rockland, massachusetts, about 20 miles southeast of boston. it's a boston suburb. the fire broke out at an abandoned factory half an hour south of boston. this is what it looked like a few hours ago as they tried to

get the factory under control. the entire structure consumed by flames. >> it's not clear whether anybody was inside at the time. firefighters will sweep through what is left after the flames are completely out. firefighters say it's not clear at this point either what started that fire. happening today, some help for victims of the historic san francisco flooding just a few hours that can begin applying for low-interest loans from the government. all you have to do is contact san jose city hall for more information. in the meantime, san jose's mayor sam ricardo is rolling out a new warning system. the mayor says they will be using a lot more than just technology to help people. >> that includes electronic communications and through the media but i think most importantly the low-tech solutions, knocking on doors in communities, particularly in low-income communities that lack access to the internet.

>> the city of san jose admitted at this point it's really just an early draft of the plan. the mayor pushed for the plan after warnings for last month's flooding came way too late. a uc berkeley student is recovering from meningitis. campus health officials warned students of the symptoms and urged them to get vaccinated. it's spread from close contact like kissing or sharing a drink. headaches and body rashes are symptoms. we're keeping track of this story, a very disturbing one, up next, a 75-year-old east bay man suddenly under attack in his own home and it started when someone posed as a construction worker and talked his way inside. then, an attempted kidnapping that led to a trip to the bank. and a san francisco educator

share of problems with mudslides, landslides and downed trees and it's getting more rain overnight. >> watch your speed if you're headed out. it's 4:40 right now. san francisco schools are looking into explosive sting videos posted by a controversial group on youtube. project veritas obtained that video. it shows a high-ranking member of a san francisco teachers union admitting to assaulting students. his linkedin page indicates that he worked recently at a middle school. it's from a 2015 conversation with someone posing as a teacher. some argue that it was obtained unethically. it does not appear that maniki

even knew that he was being recorded. >> i can see grabbing a kid maybe once or twice. >> this statement was issued, "the deceptive video clips that o'keefe has posted are troubling and we are committed to a fair investigation so that all appropriate action can be taken. uesf has placed that individual on administrative leave while the investigation is under way". a bizarre kidnapping story to tell you about in the east bay. it involves a 75-year-old lafayette man who tangled with a 26-year-old who tricked his way into that man's house and demanded money. what happened next is hard to believe. we caught up with richard russell after he was questioned by police last night. the suspect knocked on his door yesterday afternoon and gained his trust by posing as a construction worker. that's how he talked his way in. as soon as things escalated and

they both got into a scuffle, that's when russell tells us that the suspect demanded money and when he didn't have enough, he pointed russell's unloaded rifle at him and forced him to drive to the bank to withdraw money. >> you're going to go to the bank and you're not going to tell them to call the police. i said, well, no. i think it was his first rodeo. >> he's trying to laugh it off there. russell told the teller at the bank to call the police and the suspect was eventually arrested. he's now facing kidnapping, robbery and burglary charges. coming up, we are in a microclimate weather alert. hit the roads safe three morning. looking live this morning at the san mateo bridge, here's kari. >> we have several rounds of rain that will be moving in. we are seeing a batch of really heavy rain now moving off to the east. we'll take a closer look at the

tracking very wet conditions as you head out. there's going to be a slower commute with winds at 15 to 30 miles per hour. no river flooding. a stronger storm on friday. more on this in the microclimate forecast coming up in about three minutes. a look at 880 past the coliseum. taillights northbound. that will be an alternate because we have a freeway closure that's just been reported. >> mike, kari, thank you very much. 4:46. some business and tech news for you. wall street could begin the day in the red as bank stocks continue to stumble. >> not exactly a microclimate alert. good morning, jackie deangelis. >> good morning. more losses on wall street this morning after stocks plunged yesterday. the dow and s&p 500 suffering their first decline of more than

1% since before the election. now, investors are worrying about whether the gop health care bill will pass tomorrow and if it doesn't, what that means for the rest of president trump's agenda, including tax reform and spending more on infrastructure. meantime, the asian markets did fall overnight on wall street's losses. europe is in the red, too. the dow dropping 237 points to 20,668 and nasdaq down to 107 at 5793. sears holdings, the parent of sears and kmart, is worried about its ability to stay in business. the company has struggled for years with losses and declining sales. it was once the largest u.s. retailer. now they have a mountain of debt and closing more than 150 stores and planning to cut a billion dollars in cost. finally, shares of nike fell yesterday after the athletic shoe and apparel giant reported disappointing earnings. it is facing increased

competition in the biggest market, north america, from a resurgence from adidas and under armour. back over to you. >> under armour represents steph curry. there was's probably in lov lost on the court. the curry brothers facing off. they were both wearing number 30 in honor of their dad. this game, though, belongs to steph and his other brother, his slash brother, klay thompson. they have a dominant win over the mavericks. the warriors have won five straight games. but steph curry scored all of 17 points last night. not exactly a typical steph curry game. >> i don't think he was taking it easy on his little brother,

though. >> nice that you would think that. >> i said i don't think he would be. >> i have a younger sister. i leave it there. >> red alert, always treat your sister nicely. microclimate alert right now. >> we have some rain moving in. it's going to be off and on and we're looking at the potential of pockets of heavy rain. we're getting a live look at the golden gate bridge. we'll check in with mike to see what is happening there. as we head into the morning, going to see more rounds of this. we've also seen lightning strikes offshore. we want to highlight that just for the next couple of seconds because we've seen it offshore and then we'll see it working its way inland but a lot of the time, as it did so, it fizzled out as far as the lightning. we haven't seen much of that this morning, which is great news, even though we still are left with the pockets of heavy rain that will affect your

driving. driving through the south county up through morgan hill as well as into south san jose. looking at san jose right now, only a little bit of light rain and this will be off and on at times some pockets of heavier rain. we're seeing that move through milpitas and fremont and pleasanton also getting in on heavy rain. and this is where we may have brief street flooding and potential of gusty winds that may bring down some of the smaller trees but not expecting any widespread damage here. as the seven-day forecast comes up on the bottom of the screen, we have more rain on friday and again late on sunday into monday. looking at some of the reds and yellows here showing some really heavy rain, low visibility in those areas and then as you continue to drive, it just lightens up and before you know it, it's done. as we go through 6:30, 7:00, we're going to see the activity tapering off. it won't be as widespread and we won't see this really affecting the north bay that much. much of the activity south of

the golden gate bridge, there's pockets of some rain and potential of thunder and lightning throughout the morning and early afternoon and then clearing later on this evening before that next round moves in. as you step out right now, it's 53 degrees and 53 in san francisco, the east bay at 55 degrees. highs this afternoon reaching into the low 60s. scattered rain off and on and breezy winds but once again we see the activity tapering off later on today. another round of rain moving in on friday will bring the potential of pockets of heavy rain and possibly some flooding but it does move out in time for most of the weekend before another round of rain moving in sunday night into monday. so still staying very active and the potential of getting at least another inch or two with this rain. the heaviest rain is on friday. here's a look at how much you can see where you live in some parts of the north bay and santa cruz mountains. over 2 inches of rain. more updates on that. mike has a crash and a freeway

closure in oakland. >> in addition to the wet roadway and a lot of local flooding, at least some standing water that people have been talking about as the rain travels east across the bay. we have ponding and puddling that you'll see in the east bay and tri-valley. i'll take you over to oakland where we just got word from chp, a deadlyç crash westbound 580 past lakeshore, closer to harrison. there was a two-car crash. someone got out of their vehicle and was hit by another car. be very careful. try to stay in your vehicles and off the shoulder. we have a full cleosure of westbound 580. chp has to take care of a lot of issues over there. emergency vehicles are headed to the scene. northbound 880 and northbound highway 13 will be your alternate to get past that section of 580 heading up towards the maze. this will be an issue if they don't clear this up in the next 40 minutes.

it is 4:56 on your wednesday morning. now to a court case we're following very closely. witness testimony continues in the case of three county jail guards accused of beating an inmate to death. they are charged with the murder of a mentally ill inmate. yesterday, prosecutors started by showing jurors text messages between those guards talking about using force on inmates. in the meantime, the defense told jurors that tyre didn't die as a result of the beating and they have expert testimony to move it. >> we do know that the cause of death happened as a result of him standing on the toilet and falling off and slipping and skid marks on the toilet seat from his feet.

>> and the first witness was also called yesterday after opening statements. a santa clara county sheriff investigator testified about protocols at the main jail. happening now, the search continues for the robbers behind a jewelry heist in the south bay back in december at ben bridge jeweller. we're getting a glimpse of the surveillance video now. see that thief? he asks the clerk for a closer look. the clerk tries to take it back but a suspect and woman that he's with bolts right out of the store. if you know who they are, call the san jose police. >> hopefully the security guards were running after them in that video. up next, a microclimate alert. we're still seeing heavy spots, kari? >> yes. the heaviest spot is moving through the tri-valley. going to see more rain like this throughout the morning commute.
