lindsey graham in a moment. first, nbc's peter alexander at the white house with all of it. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. overnight, president trump venting on twitter dismissing the russia story as a hoax. this morning, top democrats are saying the way the republican chairman and the house intelligence committee is running the investigation is a sham. they argue after his latest revelations that devin nunes lot of the appearance of im par xialty. adam schiff calling on the republican chairman to recuse himself from the russia investigation. arguing he is compromised his credibility. >> i think that given his role on the transition team and the events of the past week, it has too much called into question whether he has the objectivity necessary to oversee this investigation. >> reporter: nancy pill to selo pressing he recuse himself.

the california congressman not backing down. >> i'm sure the democrats do want me to quit because they know i'm effective at getting to the bottom of things. >> let's hope so. >> reporter: the controversy follows his acknowledgement he met a secret source last week on white house grounds to review classified documents. that meeting exactly one day before returning to brief president trump on his claim that u.s. spies may haven incidentally scooped up information involving the president revealing their names. he denies coordinating with the president's aides. >> if i wanted to, i could have snuck on to the grounds late at night and nobody would have seen me. i wasn't trying to hide. >> reporter: he is defending his decision to review the reports in a secure facility at the white house complex. but not in the white house itself. because he says the information had not been given to congress. >> probably at least once a week, if not more than that, we have to go to the executive branch in order to read classified intelligence.

>> reporter: fellow republicans are standing by nunes. >> whether it's the white house or waffle house, what difference does it make if the information is reliable and authentic? it just so happens, devin had to do it this way. >> reporter: the mystery over moscow's meddling is growing with president trump's son-in-law volunteering to testify before senators investigating the russia connection. those senators zeroing in on kushner's meetings last december with a russian ambassador and head of a russian staid owned bank sanctioned. a white house aide telling nbc news, kushner was fulfilling his role as the primary point of contact with foreign governments and officials. also today, the president is expected to take a big step toward reversing president obama's efforts to combat climate change. president trump will go to the environmental protection agency to sign an executive order on energy independence in the words of administration officials that will initiate a review of the

there enough questions that he should at the very least recuse himself from any investigation involving the trump campaign and russia? >> well, i think you put hhe pu objectivity in question at the leaf. here is what i suggest, david go to his colleagues and share the information that he was given by this unknown person so they would know what he is talking about. if he is not willing to tell the democrats and republicans on the committee who he met with and what he was told, then i think he lost his ability to lead. the democrats on the committee are becoming prosecutors. one guy last night said on a cable show there was probable cause to believe the russians and the trump campaign collaborated. i have seen nothing like that. >> if you go back to your words that he has put his credibility in question at the very least, then doesn't he have to recuse himself? >> i think he has to repair the damage. my belief is that the house is off track and probably can't get back on track. warner doing a great job in the

senate. i'm working with the white house. as to whether he should step down, i leave that to the house leadership. most americans want to know, who did he meet with and what did he receive? >> do you think he received that from someone at the white house? >> i have no idea. i think you should know that and i should know that. i think he owes that to his fellow committee members that if he went down to the white house, he was given classified information that suggested some impropriety about surveiling the trump campaign, he needs to share that with his fellow committee member at the minimum. >> here is a shoot straight moment. the suspicion as you know is maybe it's the trump team that orchestrated this whole thing, that this information that supposedly vindicates president trump came from the trump administration. do you think it's fishy he went over to the white house to get it? >> i think it's a little bizarre. number one, there's nothing been suggested -- there's nothing been revealed to suggest that the obama administration surveilled the trump campaign.

that's not even what nunes is saying. he is saying there's in incidental collection outside of russia. the problem he created is he has gone off on a lark by himself, sort of inspector clue sew investigation here, trying to find some unmasking information about collection incidental with the trump campaign and some foreign agent outside of russia. the only way this can be repaired if he tells his colleagues on the house intel committee who he met with and what he saw and let them look theat the same information. >> lightning round. jared kushner, son-in-law to president trump revealed he met with the head of a sanctioned by the u.s., does it bother you? >> the bank, yes. the fact he met with the banker, he needs to explain himself. >> on health care, if replacing obamacare proved to be a 10 in terms of degree of difficulty,

as you look forward to tax reform, knowing that some democrats and members of the freedom caucus feel emboldened and interest groups want a piece of the tax reform pie, what's the degree of difficulty on that? >> the east german judge, 9.4. the ashes, a failed republican attempt, may spring up true bipartisanship. i hope the moment will arise where democrats and republicans will work together to replace obamacare. >> what does the east german judge say about the chances of that? >> i think he would give you 6.4. there's no other option. there's no other way do it. >> on that bright note, we have what's going on with judge gorsuch's nomination. the democrats now threatening to filibuster, forcing republicans to come up with 60 votes to get this confirmed. on the other hand, you have the democrats saying, president obama nominated garland while he was serving and he didn't get a hearing.

ambush-style shooting. dramatic video shows the men being rushed to the hospital in the back of a pickup truck. the officers were conducting an undercover gang investigation when they were shot. they are listed in stable condition. they are expected to survive. a search for multiple suspects under way. here is a scary story. authorities in maryland headed off a student's plan to attack her high school with guns and bombs. they found out about it from the girl's father. pete williams has the latest on this. what can you tell us? >> reporter: the local sheriff says he is convictionconvinced serious plan and it was spelled out in her diary which her father happened to read. authorities call it a well developed plan and say the student, a senior, had been working on it for some time to attack the high school in north western maryland near camp david. >> no doubt in our minds that we

averted a disaster up there. i have never seen anything like this, to be honest with you. >> reporter: authorities say the student had a shotgun, ammunition and at her home stockpiled fireworks, pipes, shrapnel and fuses to make pipe bombs. she had been compiling notes on how her high school handled emergency drills and how a local deputy sheriff assigned to the school conducted himself. last thursday, they say, the girl's father discovered the plan when he read her diary and made the agonizing decision to report his daughter to the sheriff's office. >> imagine if it were your 18-year-old daughter knowing what the ramifications were to go out and tell authorities that your child is planning on carrying out something like this. you have to really weigh into the conscience on that. >> reporter: residents of the community praised the father for his decision. >> that's exactly what he should have done. yeah, he was a good dad really. yeah, you can't let something like that go without having it taking some kind of action.

>> reporter: the sheriff says the diary called for the attack on april 5. she was immediately taken out of class and sent to a local hospital for evaluation. the school says she was struggling with mental health issues. >> this was a student who needed some intervention and some help. i think the silver lining is that she's going to get the help she needs now. >> reporter: once she's released, she will face charges. the sheriff says he's not sure whether she had the will to carry out her plan, which he says was real enough. >> pete williams in washington. thank you. now we move to a high profile fight over fair pay. the u.s. women's hockey team taking a page from the soccer team and now threatening a boycott unless they see significant progress towards settling a wage dispute. good morning. >> reporter: they were hoping for a deal overnight. there still isn't one. the women's eye hockey world championship kicks off this friday here in the u.s. the u.s. team, the current world champs, may not be there.

when the winter olympics kick off in less than a year, the usa women's hockey team will be a medal favorite. right now, the team is so angry with usa hockey that they are threatening to boycott this week's world championship tournament. >> we need more visibility, more games. we need to be paid properly. >> reporter: usa hockey was expected to vote monday. overnight, there was no announcement. the team says they don't get nearly the support the men get. flying coach instead of business class. sharing hotel rooms instead of getting their own. the men can practice full-time and travel to games relying on nhl salaries. women don't earn anywhere near that kind of money playing professionally. the captain of the women's team says all they are asking for is a living wage. equitable benefits. support for the women players is growing, from pros in the nba,

major league baseball and the nhl. one high profile agent said members of the men's hockey team may boycott their championship in solidarity. >> we support them and they want equitable support. we like to think they can work something out. >> reporter: a group of 14 u.s. senators dialed up the pressure with a letter to usa hockey to express their serious concerns. with the boycott looming, usa hockey went look being foing fo mn replacementes. some refused. the fight looks like the one the u.s. women's soccer team waged to get equal pay just before the rio games in 2016. some of those players spoke with matt. >> why does it come to a head now? >> i think the timing is right. i think that we have proven our worth over the years. >> reporter: now women's hockey is saying the same thing. if no one listens, they simply won't play. in a statement, usa hockey says they have increased their level of direct support and they have

possible, especially in west texas. you can see the risk extends up to oklahoma city. tomorrow is the biggest risk. in fact, we may see the risk upgraded for 19 million people, hail, strong winds and tornadoes. thursday more of the same, 20 million people at risk as it moves into the southeast and central gulf. rainfall amounts for southern oklahoma, northern texas, upwards of five inches of rain possible. flash flood watches and warnings may have to be issued by thursday. we're going to get to your local forecast coming up in the next 30 seconds.

good morning. it's 7:26. i'm kris sanchez. firefighters this morning are back at the scene of the devastating and massive fire that gutted an oakland apartment building yesterday. three people are now confirmed to have died in the fire. but there is one person who is still listed as missing. fire crews this morning plan to search through the debris. as many as 80 people lived in the transitional housing complex and so far there is no explanation about whatted the pire. the city records indicate that fire inspector just last week found a long list of violations at the building including problems with the fire alarms, the sprinklers and smoke detect detectors. >> we're waking up to insunshine and chilly temperatures. as we take a live look outside at san francisco, beautiful start to this tuesday morning.

we're going to start out with temperatures now in the 40s and 50s. and then heading into the 60s and 70s today. a lot warmer than yesterday. up to 72 degrees in san jose, livermore, and palo alto. 78 degrees in napa while 68 degrees in oakland and san francisco. into next several days, going to see the temperatures holding steady in the 60s, but there will be a chance of rain on thursday. as we geinto the weekend, temperatures will be warming up as we dry out, going to see some upper 70s for the inland areas. let's head over to mike for an update on the commute. >> most of the bay looking great. but we did have this big problem in san jose. it's sort of has the ripple effect. north 85, we had that crash that cleared about a half hour ago. just before the end of our 6:00 a.m. show. the lanes have been cleared and now the backup is there. back over to the 101, a slower coming out of morgan hill toward blossom hill, and also 101 slows around capital expressway.

by the teen's mother has been viewed nearly 5 million times. the mother says she asked the tsa to use an alternative screening process because her son suffers from a brain disorder that can make him sensitive to touch. the tsa, which intensified its screening procedures, says the patdown was done by the book. growing route rage over this video that's gone viral. it shows a tsa agent patting down a teenager at the dallas-ft. worth airport last weekend. the two minute clip posted by jennifer williamson shows her son aaron standing in a security area while an agent begins what she calls aggressively patting down her son. furious about what she describes as an unnecessary and horrifying patdown, williamson blasted the tsa for the way they treated her son writing, we have been through hell this morning. they detained aaron for well over an hour at dfw. he didn't want my child given a patdown like this. williamson says her son suffers from sensory processing

disorder, that can cause anxiety in children when they're touched. she says she asked agents to screen him in other ways per tsa rules. it was horrifying, she writes, somehow these tsa agents were traumatizing children and doing whatever they feel like without any cause need to be reigned in. the tsa released a statement saying that it allows for a patdown of a teenage passenger and in this case all approved procedures were followed to resolve an alarm of the passenger's laptop. normally the tsa says only a small number of people are selected for patdowns, usually after tripping off a metal detector or screening machine. williamson says her son set off no alarms while going through security. let me make something else crystal clear, he said off no alarms. he physically did not alarm at all during screening. he passed through the detector just fine. the incident comes just three weeks after the tsa put new stricter screening procedures in place. procedures that at least one mother says were too aggressive for her child.
