goodoingay ea-thligs a spkli in, good friday morning, bay area. the lights are sparkling in san francisco as we get ready to welcome the weekend. there are signs of spring everywhere as soon as the sun comes up. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we've talked to a lot of people in the bay area who say they felt light shaking about an hour ago from an earthquake. >> this was about a 4.0 magnitude quake. >> it hit shortly before 3:55 a.m. it may have startled some people out of bed. we spoke to our sister station in monterey.

workers there say they felt light rolling. no reports of injuries so far. >> we'll be listening for more accounts as the morning goes on. kari hall is here with the weather. we have gusty winds and sunshine. looking at some warm temperatures for this afternoon and feeling mild even as you step out the door right now. 55 degrees in the peninsula and 54 degrees in parts of the tri-valley. 47 in the north bay and in san francisco. the highs, low 70s and mid-to upper 70s for the north bay. we'll talk about the weekend forecast. that's coming up. mike is tracking a crash in palo alto. >> that's right. when we hear about an earthquake, sometimes that affects b.a.r.t., for example,

but that's too far away and too weak to affect the service. we're watching palo alto, an early morning crash here at the embarcadero off ramp. as we take a live look, you can see light flow of traffic. we just got word seconds ago that they have reopened the on ramp at embarcadero. that's at 101 in palo alto. back to you. >> mike, thank you. flames erupt at a duplex overnight in san jose. the fire broke out on south 11th street just after midnight causing quite a panic for sleeping neighbors. >> kris sanchez is live at the scene. kris, the fire was so hot that nearby homes had to be evacuated? >> reporter: yes. and most people were probably asleep because it was after

midnight. crews are boarding up the windows here so folks can have some privacy in their homes. this is the home right now and you can see the black smoke and the plywood going up as well. the neighbors in the home evacuated as a precaution. they watched for 30 minutes as firefighters tried to get the fire knocked down. when it was over, three people here could not go home. both units of the duplex were burned and damaged. firefighters were on the scene after making sure there were no hot spots that would flare-up. to give you an idea of where this is, this is happy hollow to the southeast. the good news is that no one was hurt. now, as these folks try to figure out how to pick up the pieces out of their broken homes, today fire investigators will try to pinpoint the cause and make sure it's not something that the neighbors need to know

about. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." police are looking for a man who exposed himself more than once to a girl and then a young woman. this was the suspect exposed himself to a 19-year-old. the second time this happened, same sort of circumstance when he exposed himself to a 12-year-old wednesday afternoon. the search continues for a suspect in connection with a stabbing in willow glen in downtown san jose. witnesses say a man in his 20s was beaten and stabbed by a group of men at about 8:00 near the popular aki restaurant. people we spoke to were shaken up. >> never had any problems or robberies or even suspicious activities.

it's a little bit unnerving. >> police have not released any information on the suspects at this point. the man accused of killing sierra lamar's trial continues. the defense has been claiming that a strand on lamar's hair was planted. they showed two photos. one which showed no hair and one which showed a hair. the cameo nightclub will close permanently after one person died and 17 were hurt. police arrested two men and are still looking for one more gunman.

s. continuing coverage. just an out pouring of support for the victims of a deadly oakland fire on san pablo avenue. four people died in that fire. at least ten oakland school children are among those who are now homeless. volunteers are gathering clothing and toiletries and even money to help those left with nothing. many people now are pitching in just to try to help. >> there was really a need for something more to help them with housing to get back on their feet. and so we started a gofundme campaign called hoover family recovery fund and in about 24 hours we've raised a little over $6,000. >> wow. you can find a link to the school's fund-raiser at nbcbayarea.com.

our pete saratos will have more at 5:00 a.m. three former forever 21 workers are suing the retailer accusing managers that san francisco's union square store are forcing them to speak english. the suit alleges when the workers complained about the policy, managers reduced their hours. they took their case to bay area workers rights group. >> they were speaking spanish and then they were told english only. >> forever 21 released this statement. "while we do not comment on pending litigation, forever 21 is committed to diversity and inclusion in all of our stores and does not have any policies with regards to the language spoken in our stores." a new thrilling roller coaster is opening up tomorrow at california's great america. you game? >> it's called the patriot

the dow rising 69 points yesterday to 20,728. the nasdaq up 16. verizon is reportedly buying streaming rights from major networks as it looks to launch its own online tv service. they will be joining a crowded streaming market. at&t launched its directv in december. and two middle eastern passengers are helping passengers cope with the new ban on electronics. qatar is loans laptops and iphones to people in first and business class. their electronic devices will be checked at the gate prior to boarding. and one hour free of wi-fi and $5 to stay connected for the

rescue. she's an 85-year-old colorado woman. she was in her car all alone except for candy bar, a loaf of bread and her cats. she was trying to get to interstate 70, a big interstate there in colorado when she got lost on a dirt road. over the weekend, hikers saw this car and rescued the woman. the whole ordeal was very traumatizing. >> oh, it was very emotional. i don't know i was glad to be in the car as much as i was thinking this was happening for a reason. >> her family says she's not ready to give up the car keys just yet. nope, she's got places to go. >> she must have been pretty cold as well. a candy bar in the back seat? >> a candy bar, a cat. she had a companion.

>> we're happy that she's okay. we're looking great going into the weekend. >> yes. it's friday and we'll have awesome weather. >> yeah. >> what better way to start out with the weekend. >> it was really windy. >> yes, yesterday was really -- >> i bought a kite for the occasion. >> well, it's a little too windy to fly a kite, actually. my husband was trying to fly a drone at the park and it was too windy for that. he couldn't control it. >> you have to be careful if it falls from the sky. >> we'll talk about that later. let's get to the forecast right now. it is 54 degrees as you step out. 54 in the south bay and tri-valley. seven-day forecast coming up at the bottom of the screen. as we step out, once again, it's fairly cool. heading into the 70s today. 72 degrees in the east bay. 69 degrees in san francisco for the high. yeah, we talked about the winds. we have a wind advisory in

effect for all of the areas shaded in brown. this includes the north bay for the hills and coast as well. you may have downed trees. the winds rushing in from the north and from the east. so we'll see it rushing offshore as we go through the day and winds coming in at about 15 miles an hour throughout the morning for parts of the east bay along the coast at about 20 to 25 miles an hour. and also going to see it windy even into tonight. but it does calm down tomorrow. if you will be hitting the links today at half moon bay, we've talked about how windy it will be there. not only will it be windy, but it will be cool as well. you'll have sunshine, though. yesterday they went out there to measure the snowpack in the sierra and we have awesome news. as we are currently seeing more water than we have during that 1982 and '83 record snowfall year. and the percent of average is looking really good for the

sierra. as we get a look at what's going to happen at home for the weekend, expect the highs in san francisco to reach into the upper 60s, low 70s. it will be calmer tomorrow as far as the winds and more sunshine warming up to 79 degrees on saturday for the inland areas. and mike has the hazard now in san francisco. >> at least they were taking care of a hazard. i want to warn you, in case you see flashing lights on 280, the rest of the area looks great. there's a blip on 280 coming into woodside. it just popped up. we'll make sure there's nothing going on there. southbound 280 as you get past alemany boulevard, there was some sort of a fuel spillage. we'll keep that on the map for the next few minutes until i can confirm nothing else is going on through the area. a smooth drive towards the bay bridge. if you're worried about the san mateo bridge, for example, the

good morning. a live look outside on your friday at a very clear golden gate bridge and the camera's not shaking although it is still windy again today. kari hall will get into that in a couple of minutes. we've got a scary video to show you. but we can tell you, it all turned out to be okay. it happened a little before sunset last night in redondo beach. the waves made a boat capsize with four people on board. witnesses were frantically trying to save them. lifeguards mobilized quickly and all four got out safely. >> get caught up in the pier there. very dangerous. police in moraga are looking

forearmed suspects that robbed a couple in their 70s in their driveway in moraga on wednesday night on indian wells street. the couple was just getting out of their car in their driveway when two men rushed up and snatched the woman's purse at gunpoint. a neighbor heard her scream. >> she held onto her purse. she was really frightened. >> no doubt a terrifying ordeal there. there's no information on the suspects. but a similar robbery happened when a woman was shot during the robbery but she survived. suspects were arrested. it's 4:56 right now. the wind is whipping in certain parts of the bay area. hoping they will let up today, kari.
