i'm yasmine vossoughian. >> in the south, really a tough weekend. louisiana is reeling an a powerful thunderstorm system tore through the state. it sent bolts of lightning streaking through the skies. it brought deadly and destructive tornadoes. at least ten have been reported. one killed two people. a 38-year-old woman and her 3-year-old daughter died when the tornado flipped over their trailer. the girl's father is devastated by his loss. >> i can't explain. i just can't. i can't. >> you lost everything. >> i lost everything. everything. i lost my family. >> the storms also left thousands without power after tearing down trees and power lines. forecasters expect the storms to sweep further east today hitting states like georgia, florida and both carolinas. nbc meteorologist bill karins is watching the storms and will have more coming up for us. >> that's a tough story.

another tough story, the death toll continuing to rise in colombia after a massive mudslide killed 210 people and injured 200 and that number could rise. a heavy rain storm triggered an avalanche of water. the mudslide tore through the mountain town sweeping away cars and destroying homes. the devastation swept in friday around midnight. many residents didn't have time to flee. workers are searching for the missing. the red cross had a plan to set up a special unit to help their families. in washington, a showdown in the battle over the supreme court. it is over a year in the making, with the senate set to vote in just a few days. montana senator john tester becomes the latest democrat to join the fight against neil gorsuch, the president's nominee. three others buck their party to support the nominee. but will those three be enough to give republicans the votes they need?

or will the gop have to resort to drastic measures to get gorsuch through and hand trump the first big win of his presidency? here's nbc's kelly o'donnell. >> reporter: not every capitol hill showdown carries the weight of history. >> judge gorsuch has outstanding legal skills. >> but this time it does. >> i'm honored and i'm humbled. >> reporter: 49-year-old colorado-based federal judge neil gorsuch could begin a lifetime appointment to the supreme court by friday. >> what i can tell you is that neil gorsuch will be confirmed this week. how that happens really depends on our democratic friends. >> reporter: that's where more history comes in. a supreme court nominee has never been blocked by a partisan filibuster but democrats will try to stop gorsuch by insisting on the senate's rule requiring 60 votes. >> it's highly, highly unlikely that he'll get 60. >> reporter: republicans need eight democrats to move the gorsuch nomination to a final vote. indiana senator joe donnelly announced his

support joining west virginia's joe manchin and heidi heitkamp. red states president trump won. democrats point to president obama's selection of merrick garland last year. republicans blocked garland arguing the election should determine this seat. now outside groups are spending millions. >> neil gorsuch has been called a natural successor to justice scalia. >> reporter: for and against. >> we can't just sit back and let it happen. >> reporter: expect to see a dramatic step known as the nuclear option. republicans would change senate rules, override democrats and confirm gorsuch on their own. also this morning in washington, the president is drawing a line in the sand when it comes to north korea. speaking out in a new "financial times" interview he's ready for the u.s. to tackle the rogue state and its dictator kim jong-un alone if necessary. it comes days before chinese president xi jinping arrives to meet mr. trump for the first time.

lester hold, traveled to seoul in the demille tarized zone in north korea to get a look at the concerns putting the world on edge, and he filed this report. >> reporter: you don't have to travel very far outside seoul to see signs and reminders of close it sits to a dangerous and unpredictable neighbor. people in south korea are used to the bellicose statements and the dangerous threats coming from kim jong-un, but this time things are different, according to experts. things are more perilous for three reasons. kim jong-un's discussion of trying to develop a longer range missile and miniaturized nuclear weapons. also the political turmoil in the south. its president recently impeached and arrested over corruption charges. then a stronger language coming out of washington. secretary tillerson, secretary of state recently talking about keeping military options on the table. defense secretary james mattis only friday talking about this. >> we're working with our allies

and working diplomatically including with those that we might be able to enlist in this effort to get north korea under control, but right now it appears to be going in a very -- a very reckless manner in what its conduct is portraying for the future, and that's got to be stopped. >> reporter: a continuing bone of contention are the joint u.s./south korea military exercises going on right now which we'll be covering this week. china acting as an intermediary of sorts has suggested the u.s. might be able to suspend those military exercises. but the u.s. and south korea say that's a nonstarter. >> thank you to nbc's lester holt for that report. lester will anchor "nbc nightly news" live from south korea tonight with much more on the north korean threat. >> commuter waking up to a new reality. lanes on interstate 85 are being reconfigured to handle rush hour traffic in the wake of last week's bridge fire and collapse. the georgia department of transportation says it's following an aggressive schedule to demolish and replace the

bridge. over the weekend, the homeless man suspected of starting the fire basil eleby was charged with criminal arson and criminal damage to property. >> an exciting weekend for basketball. university of south carolina just won its first championship in women's basketball. it beat mississippi state's bulldogs 67-65 in a heated game. we'll see who wins the men's championship. the north carolina tar heels will be facing off against gonzaga's bulldogs in arizona. the game scheduled to start at 9:20 p.m. eastern. get ready. >> we'll turn now to the severe weather outbreak in the south. here is nbc meteorologist bill karins who is following the developments and where the risk is now. >> the threat continues. we've had a break in correspond action, that's good news. continue to watch over mobile, severe thunderstorm watch also. later today we take these storms through the southeast. we're going to get tornadoes

today. we could get weaker ones off the gulf waters. we may on a warm front what we call super thunderstorms, producing stronger tornadoes. that will be central georgia. about 20 million people at risk, although storms today and a lot of wind damage along wit of the other story in the west, here comes the next storm moving through the intermountain west. this will bring valley rain, significant dose of snow for colorado as we go into tuesday. especially the mountainous areas out there, telluride and san juan. ski season sometimes famous for april snowstorms. they are going to get it in colorado, high peaks, as much as a foot of snowher conditions th sacramento. 75 is just about perfect for the beginning of april. how about this? a close call for firefighters in

welcome back. as far as today's forecast goes, the best weather in the country we found on the west coast, a little cool but inland, 70s. 65, 85 in phoenix nearly perfect, too. all the severe weather that was in texas now heading into the southeast today. that takes us into tuesday. a lot of travel delays in the northeast. travel delays around denver international with rain and snow depending on elevation there. we're also going to be watching a little bit of light rain late in the day in seattle. light weather at least today on the west coast. >> at least somebody getting it. if you received notifications from the "new york post" you're not alone. it was apparently hacked on tuesday. apologizing and acknowledging with push alert system via
