security now being tightened all across that country as the investigation gets under way. nbc's kelly cobiella is with us. kelly, what can you tell us? >> matt, good morning. this happened in the heart of st. petersburg deep under ground. the russian government saying the blast ripped through the subway at 2:40 in the afternoon local time on a metro train, actually inside a carriage as it traveled between two stations. >> the aftermath of the powerful explosion in the st. petersburg metro posted on social media. the blast blew the door off a metro train. commuters dazed and bloodied on the platform. ambulances rushing to help the injured. russia's state run news agency said at least 10 were killed, dozens injured, the metro evacuated. this morning unconfirmed reports

of a second maybe third blast, russian media reporting the explosives were filled with shrapnel. vladimir putin in st. petersburg today. he said we're considering all causes including terrorism. and the story still developing this morning. russian anti-terrorist committee put out a statement confirming there was one explosion, no mention of further explosions. the metro closed while they increase security. they were on alert for possible terror attacks. last fall they said they stopped isis attacks in moscow and st. petersburg. again, matt and savannah, the cause of this morning's blast still not determined. >> kelly, thank you. we're sure to learn more about this today. >> here at home another day of severe weather on tap after damaging storms ripped through the region. we'll get to al's report but first maya in alexandria, louisiana.

good morning. >> good morning. here homes and businesses damaged, including this one, ripped off the roof and walls. the storm has also killed two people. overnight heavy storms battering parts of the gulf coast. lightning streaking across the sky. >> large tornado. >> in lena, louisiana, tornado moving quickly across the highway with reports of multiple tornadoes hitting the state sunday. just 20 miles away at this strip mall in alexandria, shoppers looked on at the funnel cloud with fear, rapidly forming into a twister blowing out windows. >> the windows are bused out of the car. >> powerful wind and lashing rain also leaving a trail of destruction bringing down trees and power lines. collapsing part of a gas station, ripping the roof off of this home. earlier, another tornado brought

tragedy to one family in louisiana. after 100-mile-an-hour winds flipped this mobile home killing a woman and her 3-year-old daughter. the husband and father inconsolable. >> i lost everything. everything. i lost my family. >> reporter: in other parts of the state, lightning caused this oil tanker to go up in flames. the weekend's severe weather just the latest in a day's long barrage across the region. with flash flooding, damaging winds, and hail all possible in the coming days. this morning the storms will push into mississippi, alabama and georgia, potentially putting 20 million people at risk for severe weather. matt. >> all right. maya rodriguez. thank you very much. let's go to al. what are we looking onat for today. >> right new tornado watches and severe thunderstorm watches stretching from alabama into the panhandle of florida and also into alabama. so we're going to be watching this very, very closely today.

in fact, four today, we've got 21 million people now at risk. a tornado risk, the highest along the central and eastern gulf. tomorrow not quite so bad, 10 million people at risk of damaging winds. then on wednesday the atmosphere gets juiced up again, 43 million at risk mobile, tallahassee, augusta and atlanta. we're going to be watching strong storms fire up this morning right on into the afternoon. travel delays for the southeast into the mid-atlantic, we look for heavy rain moving into the northeast with snow in northern new england. we're talking about rainfall amounts into saturday anywhere from 3 to 5 inches. some areas, guys, could pick up to 7 inches of rain, flash flood watches will be up up and down the east coast and gulf coast. >> thank you. >> thank you. this is a critical and busy week for the white house. today the senate judiciary committee is expected to vote on president trump's supreme court nominee neil gorsuch as a key step toward a senate vote, setting up high-stakes showdown

with democrats trying to block that nomination. >> another issue on capitol hill ongoing investigations into russian meddling in the investigation. u.n. ambassador nikki haley now says there's no question that moscow was involved and their actions will soon be addressed. breaking overnight, we learned jared cash nkushner, president's son-in-law is in iraq, unannounced visit as president's chief of staff. he'll play a keep role with china's president. nbc peter alexander at the white house this morning covering all of this. peter, good morning. >> good morning to you. jared arrived in iraq, happened earlier this morning. his father-in-law, the president at the white house this week with a series of critical meetings including one with the chinese president to take place in florida friday. just a matter of moments from now he's going to welcome the president of egypt here at home the president is eyeing his first major victory, the confirmation of judge neil gorsuch. even as president trump tripped up by fallout from wiretapping

tweet he's responding to the "financial times" telling them i don't regret anything because there is nothing you can do about it. you know if you issue hundreds of tweets and every once in a while you have a clinker, that's not so fire. wiretapping selfie insists without evidence is turning out to be true. this morning a stalemate over the supreme court despite the president's praise for federal judge neil gorsuch. >> judge gorsuch's nomination is about more than his incredible qualifications. it's about preserving our republic. >> standing in gorsuch's way a divided senate. >> what i can tell you is neil gorsuch will be confirmed this week. how that happens depends on our democratic friends. >> democrats threaten to plok with what would be the first filibuster demanding he got 60 votes. >> it's highly, highly unlikely he'll get 60. when a nominee doesn't get 60 votes, you shouldn't change the

rules, you should change the nominee. >> for gorsuch to be confirmed he needs eight democrats on board. so far he only has three. if democrats force the issue, top republican mitch mcconnell is threatening to do something that's never happened before with the supreme court nominee, deploying the so-called nuclear option, changing senate rules to override democrats, confirming gorsuch with a simple majority, just 51 votes. a move that could have far reaching implications long after gorsuch is confirmed. this battle goes back more than a year. democrats still angry about republicans refusal to give president obama's pick, merrick garland a hearing. playing golf with one of the plan's fiercest critics, rand paul. >> i think the sides are getting closer and closer together. i remain very optimistic we will. >> the president venting frustration about russia investigation dismissing it as a

total scam, writing find the leakers, all of i as ousted security adviser michael flynn's business comes under scrutiny. two sets of financial disclosures plans show he initially failed to list three russian linked companies that paid him for speaking enga engagemen engagements. tells nbc news the first filing was a draft of speaking fees that wasn't completed because flynn lost his job a few days after the submission. as for the president's son-in-law jared kushner in iraq traveling with joseph dunford, the trip confirmed by senior white house official, kushner and wife ivanka also an official but unpaid adviser report hundreds of millions in real estate holdings and investments. experts questioning ivanka keeping a multi-million dollar stake in her father's d.c. hotel. also morning a source familiar with ivanka's plans said all the

business decisions made after meeting with independent ethics and white house lawyers to remove any potential conflicts. you can see honor guard in formation as they prepare for the egyptian president to arrive some time from now. back to you. turning now to a scene of desperation playing out in south america after a massive avalanche of mud buried a mountain town in colombia. the death toll climbing to more than 250 people overnight as rescue crews race to find any possible survivor. nbc's tammy leitner is there. tammy, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. a wall of water came rushing down here carrying everything in its way including this giant bus. as you see behind me rescuers working around the clock frantically searching for the hundreds that are still missing. this morning a desperate search for missing as survivors of one of the worst natural disasters

in colombia's recent history struggle to hold out hope. we've lost a little baby, this woman says, a little baby. we can't find him anywhere. >> this man brought to tears looking at a list of dozens of missing children. i will not rest, says this grandmother, who hasn't seen her family since the disaster first struck. it happened early saturday as the small city of mocoa slept. a sudden heavy rain storm causing three surrounding rivers to swell sending a massive surge of floodwater, mud and debris toward the town's 40,000 unsuspecting residents. the wall of water so powerful, entire neighborhoods washed away. homes and bridges destroyed. the nation's president has declared a state of emergency and colombia's military is now scrambling to help. many of the roads are still impassable so the colombian military is flying in supplies.

they are bringing food, water, bedding. right now there's a rush to take care of survivors as well as search for those still missing. this week's catastrophic avalanche, a reminder colombia is prone to natural disasters. in 1985 nearly 25,000 people died when a volcano erupted triggering massive mudslides. this man says he has nothing to eat, nowhere to sleep, and is wearing borrowed clothes. the level of devastation clearly written on the faces of those left to overcome this enormous tragedy. locals tell us they buried about 100 people yesterday, but they are still holding out hope that more people will be found alive. back to you guys. >> all right. tammy leitner. tammy, thank you very much. now back to president trump. he's also speaking out about how the u.s. will handle growing threats posed by north korea. nbc's lester holt has more on that. he's in seoul, south korea this morning. lester, good morning.

>> reporter: savannah, the president's remarks about possible unilateral action if china doesn't climb on board will do nothing to diffuse tensions in north korea especially when north korea is trying to enhance their nuclear weapons capability. it also puts the focus on 28,000500 service members here and the risk of hostility. ready to fight tonight is the slogan at this air base. its fighter jets just a three-minute flight from the border. >> we are ready for combat mode. we train all the time. when we go out on training we're training pseudocombat. >> at the air base we get a rare peek inside the operations center where operators are the first to protect the missile launches. their missiles already putting millions in the region at risk, including tens of thousands of american military personnel and u.s. civilians like teacher

steve and leah rigby who live in seoul. >> so do the threats from north korea, do they rattle you or take them with a grain of salt. >> i think we've heard these threats so many times. it's spring we're going to hear another threat that south korea is going to be turned into fire. we've heard it before and nothing has happened before. >> seoul is a modern metropolis, hardly looks under the threat of constant military attack. in fact shelters are plentiful and marked. a reminder, 35 miles from the dmz, well in range of north korean artillery. what's casting a chill all the way to washington is north korea's claim to be working on an intercontinental missile and small nuclear warhead capable of reaching the u.s. >> this is a threat of both rhetoric and growing capability. right now it appears to be going in a very reckless manner. >> reporter: secretary mattis

reconfigured several lanes on i-85, in an attempt to handle the traffic. they're following an aggressive schedule to replace that bridge. a 40-year-old has been charged with arson in connection with that fire. and sports fans, rejoice. the official opening day of the 2017 major league baseball season. 12 games on tap. there were actually three played on sunday. tampa bay beat the yankees. arizona topped the giants. and the defending world series champion cubs lost to the st. louis cardinals. >> spring is really here. also this morning, we have new developments in the search for elizabeth thomas. she's the 15-year-old girl that investigators say was kidnapped by her high school teacher. surveillance video shows them several states away in oklahoma. and her father is speaking out, as well. >> reporter: good morning.

authorities here at the tennessee bureau of investigation says they have more than 1,200 tips since the pair went missing three weeks ago today. so far, there's been just one credible sighting as this mystery deepens. this morning, authorities say this is the only solid lead so far, in the disappearance of elizabeth thomas. surveillance video from march 15th, showing thomas and tad cummins, her teacher at school, together at a walmart in oklahoma city. it appears that cummins darkened his hair and thomas may have red hair. they bought food and paid in cash. >> it is our proof positive that he did abduct her. >> reporter: cummins' wife, jill, who begged for him to turn himself in, has filed for divorce. and overnight, at an emotional vigil in elizabeth's hometown in tennessee, friends pleaded for her safe return.

>> she was groomed. this man manipulated her, brainwashed her and took advantage of her. >> reporter: her father, giving new details to nbc news, on how he believes cummins manipulated her. >> he was molding her mind and convincing her. >> reporter: when a student reported seeing the pair kissing in a classroom, it set off a firestorm in the school, that sum cummins used to his advantage. >> tad had been telling her because of the kissing incident, she would never be able to attend college. wouldn't be accepted in college. and wouldn't be able to get a career after that. >> reporter: investigators discovered secret messages between the two on an e-mail account. >> this is not a romance. there's nothing pretty about this. this is a crime. and it's a serious crime. >> reporter: cummins is considered armed and dangerous. he faces aggravated kidnapping and sexual misconduct with a minor.

matt and savannah, while the pair was spotted in oklahoma, they could be anywhere. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you very much. in other news, as south carolina fans like to say, it's good to be a gamecock this morning. the school is celebrating the first-ever women's championship. and in a few hours, the men's title game will be held. in the wake of a deadly carbon monoxide leak. >> jeff rossen in here. >> reporter: this is a superimportant one. it is a silent killer. carbon monoxide poisoning poisons over 10,000 a year. a group of kids playing at this hotel pool got poisoned by the gas. they had no idea they were breathing it in. no warning at all. this morning, we have the latest on this tragic case and how you can protect your family right now. >> priority one medical at the quality inn and suites. >> reporter: a terrifying scene at this michigan hotel. >> the mother was screaming up and down the hallway, my kids, my kids. >> reporter: kids, passed out on the floor near the pool. >> i didn't see movement in their bodies at all. >> reporter: officials say it was a malfunctioning pool

♪ the kidnapping, crimes and conviction of patty hearst is a saga as surreal as their era. >> 1970s was the craziest times of the century. political violence, violence, economic disaster. political crisis with watergate. >> reporter: out of that chaos came the symbionese liberation army, the sla, a disorganized but deadly domestic terrorist group of eight people, in 1974, kidnapped cal berkeley student, patricia hearst. >> i have trouble figuring out what it was these people wanted, except to be noticed. and that they accomplished. >> reporter: she was the granddaughter of william randolph hearst, newspaper tycoon and inspiration for the 1941 film "citizen kane." "american heiress" author -- >> the name hearst was to the

1970s. >> reporter: while hearst's family pleaded for her to come home, the sla had audio recordings to confirm her kidnapping. >> i'm making this tape to let you know i'm okay. >> reporter: just two months after her kidnapping, the sla robbed a san francisco bank. and there was patricia hearst, automatic rifle in hand, looking more like a gunman on a victim. >> the impact of the photographs of patty hearst with a machine gun were in some ways bigger than the kidnapping itself because it established or so it appeared, that patty hearst had gone to the other side. >> reporter: it was a story the press and the public could not resist, even if there was more to that photo than people realized. >> the symbionese liberation army told her, we're going to

rob a bank. you're going to be up front. there will be a number of guns behind you. one false step on your part and we'll gun you down. >> reporter: after the robbery, the sla and their newest member, became america's most wanted fugitives, turning up a month later in los angeles. as two of her kidnappers get stopped at a sporting good store, hearst shot out the building to come this their aid. >> that was the moment that she was established that she was really a member of the sla and no longer a victim. >> reporter: the fallout was immediate. the next day her other six captors were tracked to a house in south-central l.a. and killed in a shoot-out with lapd. more than a year on the run followed, including another bank robbery, in which a mother of four was killed while helping her church deposit donations. hearst drove the getaway car.

she was arrested in 1975, 19 months after her kidnapping. magazines like "time" were billing the case as the trial of the century. the hearsts brought in the biggest defense attorney, f. lee bailey. take me back to the moment when you first met patty hearst. >> i was talking to a zombie. >> reporter: a case of potential brainwashing that four decades later stands out as wholly unique. >> in all of our history, there was no case like patty hearst. she was a wealthy, secure woman, who turned up after 60 days after being kidnapped, as an alleged warrior. and the trial was about how did that happen? >> reporter: ultimately, the jury convicted hearst for her role in the robbery, sentencing her to seven years in prison. >> in some respects it was a verdict on the young people of the 1970s. it was a verdict that said, you

now, surprising insight on the royal family. it comes from a new biography, exploring prince charles' marriage to diana and with his new wife, camilla. >> keir simmons is at buckingham palace with that. >> reporter: fans of the show, "the crown," that what the royal family shows out here is not what's going on in there. charles and diana, diana saying there were three people in their marriage. but it turns out there may be more to learn. 20 years since diana, a new book opening old wou wounds. it portrays her as emotionally troubled. prescribed antidepressants before her honeymoon, but refusing to take them, believing that the royal family wanted to sedate her. charles felt trapped from the beginning. >> he was pressurized into making a decision quickly by his father.

what a huge decision that was. and possibly a bad decision. >> reporter: the couple, famo famously asked if they were in love. >> of course. >> what does in love mean? >> reporter: as the marriage crumbled, the people's princess was pictured alone in india. but a sympathetic public did not see the wild rages, the broook' author claims. perhaps most controversially, the book recounts diana's suspicion of camilla. she wept before her fiancee left because he had taking a call that night from camilla, the author writes. a reminder of charles and camilla ice history will not receive a royal welcome. charles hopes that camilla will be named queen when he takes the throne. while diana, the book claims, would taunt charles, that he would never be king. the author suggesting she attempted suicide.

he, alleged, receiving therapy for 14 years. for william and harry, the book's contents will be painful. in a year, they plan to mark the anniversary of her death. the boys talking lately about losing their mom. william telling this little girl he was 15 when diana died. harry admitting it took a long time to express groef. >> for the first 28 years of my life, never talked about i. >> reporter: the author paints diana as a woman with emptiness. that's not the way they remember her. a mother who would greet them with open arms and who they lost too soon. so many memories. i guess it's just worth pointing out, guys, that charles and camilla, because of their position, can't respond to allegations. and diana isn't here to defend herself. matt? savannah? >> that's a no-win situation, keir. coming up in ex-a survivor of the boston marathon bombing

taking her life back nearly four years later. first, this is "today" on nbc.

this year marked four years since the boston marathon bombing. rebecca and her young son were just feet away from the blast and they survived. now, rebecca is sharing her story in a new book, taking my life back. >> i was three feet away from a bomb. i'm still here. i'm pretty blessed. >> reporter: rebecca was cheering on a friend at the f finish line. her son sitting at her feet. what happened next would change their lives forever. she was rushed to a boston hospital, fighting for her life. her young son suffered minor injuriey sies. his mom's legs shielding him. rebecca spent a month recovering

in the hospital. through it all, her strength and determination inspired so many. her injuries were so severe, she would later lose her leg. and then, showing everyone exactly what boston strong means, she got a prosthetic leg, named it feliz ya. and in 2015, she ran in the boston marathon. >> when i crossed the finish line, i took my life back today. >> reporter: a month later, dzhokhar tsaranev was convicted. rebecca released a letter to him that went viral. >> today, i looked at you right in the face and realized i wasn't afraid anymore. now, when you're sitting in solitary confinement awaiting if the verdict on your life, i will be enjoying everything this beautiful world has to offer. >> reporter: rebecca moved on with her life. she married. then, endured a painful divorce. she later remarried after reuniting with her college sweetheart and faced another incredible challenge. their baby girl was born several

months premature. like her mother before her, she was fighting for her life. remembbecca says her faith founr through it all. now, riley is happy, healthy and nearly 1. rebecca's story of pry ump over adversity, her strength through challenges, has made her a lasting symbol of grace. you already had me crying, rebekah. you wrote this book. you turned 30 next week. that was your goal, wasn't it? >> i promised by 30 i would have a book published. and i cannot believe it's out tomorrow. and i'm 30 next week. 30. >> and you have so many things to talk about. you have such a story to tell. how are you doing? that's the first question everybody wants to know the answer to. >> this is a great chapter of my life. just like i said on the piece, i'm very blessed. and i continue to feel blessed. i feel like we go through chapters of our life that are difficult. and i've had those. as an amazing husband who

supports me in everything i do and two, beautiful children, i'm here to tell my story. >> one thing i like about the book is you're honest and worth coming what is still a struggle. what are the challenges. and you talk about dealing with ptsd. dealing with the trauma of the bombing. >> people think that because it was four years ago, we've moved on with our lives. but people don't understand the emotional impact of everything is so much greater than the physical. so, what we saw that day, people's body parts were on the ground next to us. bones were laying on the sidewalk. blood, nails, ball behrings, that sticks with you. there's nightmares. and you're afraid to go to the airport and leave a bag unattended. it creeps up in everyday life. >> how is noah doing? he was there. your legs shielded him. he's a healthy little boy? >> he is wonderful. he is running around like nothing ever happened to him. he likes to tell people, i got

blown up by a bomb and here's my scars. >> little boys are little boys. tell me about your daughter. that's a miracle and so wonderful. doctors weren't sure if you would be able to carry a child. but you did carry riley. and she was very premature. how is she doing? >> she is wonderful. doctors told me i would never have a baby again. that was sad noah. but riley did come into our lives. we spent quite a few days in the nicu. we're ready to celebrate her first birthday. >> it struck me, your story. all these things in life, people fear. what if harm came to me or my family or they worry about a divorce or a struggle with oa child. many of the things have actually happened to you. and here you are, the better for it. where does that come from? >> i feel like everyone's life blows up in their face,

literally and figuratively sometimes. and i've been through different aspect oss of that. and i've had heartache. at the end of the day, i'm here to tell my story. and with each chapter, i learn so much about myself. and i have a greater appreciation for the world around me. and i'm so thankful for that. >> one of the things you said, the hardest chapters bring you to the most beautiful ones. you have to wait long enough to get there. and i know your faith is important to you. this isn't some faith that you put up on a shelf to admire. you had to really put it to the test. >> i have. and there's been times when i turned away from it. but every time i turned away, i have been shown that there's such a greater power out there. and god reveals himself to me in the strongest ways. and so, my determination outweighs my fear every day. and because i was at the boston marathon and i got blown up does not mean that my life stop there's. i was three feet from a bomb. i'm here today.

i'm blessed, regardless of anything else that happens. >> you're here and shining. we're so happy to see you. congratulations on the book. and happy early birthday. 8:46. we're back with "today food." in her newest book, "a new way to bake," martha stewart helps you approach a healthier style to baking. these can't desserts that are really healthy for you. but they're healthier than the classic recipe. >> what it is is using new kinds of ingredients, new kinds of flour. flour that's made not just of wheat but spelt and farrow and more dense whole wheat flours. and it's not all gluten-free.

people aren't so gluten-intolerant anymore, either. >> these are great recipes. making chocolate chip cookies. how do you go away from the traditional recipe? >> we're using farrow flour. you can use spelt flour. whole wheat flour. we're using farrow. and the farrow -- you want to sift or add? you add. to butter and brown sugar, two eggs and two tablespoons of vanilla, flour, 1 and a quarter teaspoons of baking soda and salt. want to use your elbow grease, dump all that in. adding chocolate.

coarsely chopped chocolate. walnuts, any kind of nuts. >> you can put dates in yours? >> you can put dates, apricots and peaches. this is a dense batter. a lot of good ingredients. you have some chocolate. >> i'm going to eat those here. once you get done with that. you make them a little smaller. some people make cookies that are too big. >> it depends on what you're going to use them for. you can eat two of these. use an ice cream scoop like this because you're going to get uniform sized cookies. >> look how beautiful they come out. >> and skim or 2% milk. >> now, a different take on a traditional chocolate cake. what's the add or take away here? >> beets. the addition of a vegetable to your batter. >> carson doesn't like beets, by

the way. he's downstairs. see if you can sell him on this. >> see if he doesn't like them. take about 25 minutes. steam them, peel them, grind them up to a fine pure. and you can make borsht out of this, if you want. we're using spelt flour and cane sugar. a brown, less refined sugar. a little all-purpose -- this book doesn't not use white flour. use a little white flour, that gives a lighter cookie. >> you mix the dry ingredients first. and adding the wet ingredients. >> you can add the eggs. >> okay. two eggs. >> two eggs. and beat those. and this is all done by hand. you don't have to use a mixer. >> a little vanilla. >> a little vanilla. add the beets. here's a rubber scraper. >> okay. how is it, guys? >> what is the beets instead of? >> are you replacing beets?

>> the melted chocolate. water and sunflower oil. there's no butter. it's less caloric. but it makes a beautiful, beautiful batter. line your pan. using a brownie pan. line it with strips of parchment paper. i use these clips to hold it in place. >> can i try it? if you add healthier ingredients, it doesn't matter unless it tastes good. >> you bet. and everything in this book tastes delicious. i think. i love all of the recipes. what do you think? nice? >> pretty good. >> and the ganache, it's melted chocolate and cream. you feeling healthier, guys? >> i do -- >> i want to know what jack thinks. >> i don't taste it. i think the cake tastes awesome.
