"today in the bay" starts right now. let's give you a live look outside looking at downtown san jose there. your temperature at the hour, 49 degrees. we're under a micro climate weather alert. good morning, thank you so much for joining us. i'm viccen nguyen in with kira klapper this morning. we're standing by with the weather alert we're under. it seems a lot chillier this morning. >> it definitely is. we've been seeing 50s and 60s the past couple of weeks with all the spring weather, but we

had that cold front sweep in and really dropped down the temperatures which made for snow in the sierra. please make sure to dress accordingly because it's definitely chilly. south bay 49, 50 in peninsula. tri-valley 46. look at the north bay, 38 degrees. definitely feeling very cold. and if we take a live look at that doppler radar, we can see there's still plenty of moisture siing off shore which is why we did keep that micro climate alert just in case you plan on being out on the roads. we have the chance of possibly seeing thunderstorms through the mid-morning. you can actually see those forming off shore. if they do manage to hit in tonight we'll keep you updated on that. but i'll have a closer look at the timeline and when we can see relief from the rain coming up at 7:18. you'll definitely want to tune in. we have big changes ahead through the upcoming work week.

we could have an additional system coming in. >> will we still have the same blustery winds. thursday night pounding all over where we live. >> the good news for today it will be very breezy, definitely not as windy as what you saw. that was a big concern of yours, we could still see breezy conditions, more along the coastline and inland valleys as well. >> several families out of their homes evacuated because of a mud slide. there's fear that the situation has gotten worse overnight. heavy rains soppened the already saturated ground. investigators red tagged two homes. the hill side is unstable and at any moment more mud and sliding trees could pour into those homes. >> mud is coming through there, through the bathroom into the

bedroom and into hall way. >> all work to clean up the fallen hillside and to repair the homes has to stop until city officials give the go ahead. homeowners say their newest worry this morning is shoring up a crumbling road above their properties so that it doesn't slide down and bring more mud. thousands of bay area residents are still in the dark since first storm hit thursday night. this is pg&e's outage map. most of them in the east bay specifically oakland. pg&e crews will be working throughout the day to get the lights back on. besides taking down power lines, the storm also bringing down trees. one toppled on to a kfc restaurant on thornton avenue. the tree slashed right through the kfc logo. take a look at this, a large tree uprooted and on to a home in los altos. anisha sent us this picture.

you can help add to our coverage of what's happening in your neighborhood. a fight at a popular south bay bowling alley overnight sends a minor to the hospital with stab and gunshot wounds. police say the fight broke out in the parking lot of the fourth street bowl in downtown san jose. officers say when they arrived on the scene a juvenile male was found shot and stabbed multiple times. he was taken to a local hospital where he's expected to survive. police interviewed several witnesses at the scene. no word whether this was gang recei related. the world is watching and waiting. could there be another air strike in syria? the pentagon says the photos show damage or destroyed aircraft shelters. we're also learning more about tesktiveness of that attack. president trump is getting a lot of credit for this operation. and this might not be the end of the u.s. involvement in syria.

time now is 7:09. this is a live look at the skies over sunol. and vianey is saying you can expect periods of off and on showers throughout the day. looking fairly clear right now. temperatures in the upper 30s in the north bay. highs in the 50s around the rest of the bay area. and vianey will be along in just a moment to give you the spring break forecast. the 49ers earn the dubious distinction of having the most player arrests since 2012. yesterday tramaine brock was arrested for domestic violence. robert handa broke the story. >> reporter: 28-year-old tramaine brock was still a member of the 49ers when he posted $50,000 bail. he had no comment. it wasn't that long ago that

we'd seen happier images of brock as well as interviews he had done defending colin kaepernick. >> just like me or you. >> reporter: the san jose domestic violence group next door solutions says they're concerned about the victim. >> well, it sounds like she has injuries. i'm concerned about her. >> reporter: police say officer responded to a report of a domestic violence incident at the home of brock in santa clara. police officers arrested him after they say they found visible injuries on the woman there who police say he had a dating relationship. sources tell us they were marks on the neck. rick boone tried to talk to brock at his home after he arrived from jail. it wasn't long after that when the 49ers announced the team had cut brock. >> i think that the 49ers as a team has done a lot more to try to work towards this issue, and so the fact that these cases are still coming to light means again that there's more work to do. well, this is not the list they want to be on, as we

mentioned, the niners lead the league in arrests. this is the 15th arrest of a player since 2012. san francisco police ared bruce miller last september for attacking a man at a hotel. he was arrested for misdemeanor battery in 2015. ray mcdonald was arrested three times allegations of attacking his pregnant fiancee. prosecutors eventually dropped the charges. aldon smith has arrested five times. the 49ers finally released him. coming up, a great white in trouble off the coast of santa cruz. why the feared predator was suddenly in need of help. and the weather may feel calm now but doppler radar is still showing plenty of rain off shore. what you can expect today and heading into the work week ahead coming up at about 7:18.

time now 7:14. a line look at that beautiful icon, the san francisco golden gate bridge. it's 49 degrees out there. no traffic in sight. and if you are just kicking off your spring break or maybe ending your pring break, we've got some weather to tell you about. off and on showers throughout the day. vianey will be back with that in a minute. a predator on the beach you've probably never seen before. it happened in santa cruz, a great white shark washes ashore. it attracted a lot of crowds. this happened near pleasure point. why onlookers not only feared for their safety but for the safety of that shark, too. >> a live ten-foot white shark stuck. the ensuing crowds awestruck. >> i've been here for 50 years. first time i've seen something like that. >> reporter: high surf at pleasure point brought this feared predator to shore. researchers say it's the first

beached white shark seen in the monterey bay in three years. the first adult male in decades. >> they're out there swimming. you just never see them. you know what i mean? who knows if the surfers were swimming right underneath them the last few days. >> reporter: some risked it all to try to help it back into the ocean, then a rescue effort was launched by researchers. >> we were able to get the shark uprighted in the water. it kind of turned around. it was aimless. >> reporter: the rough conditions made it difficult to swim out. researchers think an illness or injury caused the shark to come toward shore in first place. >> she's sharks swallow hooks sometimes. police do catch and release, cut the line. >> reporter: he said it was lost in the waves and likely didn't make it. the scene turning from shocking to sadness. >> to see that it was so bloody and trying to survive, but i guess it was good that it happened today instead of any other day when there were not that many people in the water.

>> reporter: in santa cruz, ian cole, nbc bay area news. you can thang tk the months heavy rain. california's drought is over. lakes are back to full after five punishing years of drought. it forced the state to order the first ever mandatory order for water rationing. governor brown says people should still conserve because the next drought could be around the corner. if you were planning on heading up to the snow today or during this next week, it could be tricky. here's what it looked like a few hours ago on i-80 at kingvale heading up to tahoe. chains are required on all vehicles unless you have four-wheel drive. so we are seeing some showers, some breezes, hopefully nothing like what we saw thursday night. >> definitely not. the reason why we're keeping the micro climate weather alert into this early morning is because we do have the chance of seeing

possible isolated thunderstorms and that's into the early morning hours. but all in all, much calmer conditions from the past two days especially when it comes to the winds. one thing you're definitely going to notice, it's chilly out there. 39 for santa rosa, oakland 52 and hayward and palo alto in the 50s. yes, we do still have a very active doppler radar but we're seeing the majority of that moisture still sitting off shore. we can expect to see some showers through the early morning hours mainly focussed in the north bay then pushing southward. i want to pay close attention to this. we are seeing thunderstorms just off shore and we'll keep the chance of seeing the possibility of isolated thunderstorms into the mid-afternoon, which is why we're keeping the micro climate weather alert. if you're wondering about the winds, they have died down significantly from 10 miles per hour expected to say breezy in san francisco, then it will pick up by about 10:00 a.m. to a

stronger breeze in san francisco at about 25 plus miles per hour. so definitely be a lot breezier along the coastline. half moon bay at 20 miles per hour. inland areas not expecting too much wind. livermore 11 miles per hour. we do see winds picking up for areas in the south bay at about 5:00. but let's take a look at that hour by hour outlook. here's a quick check of what you can expect. we'll keep that chance of showers to 9:00 a.m. and to 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. as well. mainly focused in the north bay. santa rosa is still expecting to see periods of moderate to heavy showers. you do see that line pushing down through saturday at about 11:00 a.m. so we are expecting to still see some sleek roads out there. take a look at the timeline right after about 11:00. we see the breezy conditions kind of taper off as well into the overnight hours making way

for an overall fairly pleasant sunday. your highs for today, they'll stay on the cooler side. palo alto expecting a high about 50 degrees. san francisco 56 degrees. oakland area 57, then along half moon bay about 55 degrees. these are your highs for today. we'll definitely be on the cooler side of things. i do want to show you this quick cam of tahoe. that's because there is still active a winter storm watch. and that's because they're still expecting to see blizzardlike conditions. you saw the live traffic cam we showed you earlier. that will be in effect until 6:00 p.m. tonight because it's fairly windy up there and still expecting to see snow at times. check the road conditions before heading up there. here's what you can expect heading into today as that storm tapers off by mid-afternoon. those winds will be decreasing. expect periods of on and off again showers. cooler temps ahead. then a nice clearing afternoon. now, over the next seven days we

do have major changes on the way. we'll be enjoying an overall pleasant sunday, cooler temps at 56, then dry through the start of work week. but if we pay close attention by tuesday we are seeing and looks like an additional storm system making its way in on tuesday. that's going to bring another round of showers starting from tuesday and from what now the models are showing through friday. not just for san francisco but also inland areas. so yes, we have more wet weather ahead into the upcoming work week. definitely excited about the rain tapering off so we can enjoy a sunny day tomorrow. >> vianey, thank you. victims of the south bay flooding back in february are getting help from unexpected source. what these students are doing for people who they've never met. we'll make you bay area proud.

february's floods, but they're not the only ones pitching in. one san jose elementary school is going above and way beyond. today in the bay's garvin thomas has more on their effort in this morning's "bay area proud". >> reporter: hacienda elementary is a mag nature school. it draws students from all over san jose. what that means is while it's not close geographically to the flooding, the flooding still hit close to home. >> we've got the daily total figured out. >> reporter: one of the math skills jessica friedman expects her students to master is how to estimate. >> what is that number again? >> reporter: this past month it's jessica who needed to brush up because she clearly underestimated them. >> like superproud of you. that they absolutely surprised me, but in the best way. the best possible way. >> reporter: this all begins with two of jessica's students,

roma smith and jenna kang both of whom live near coyote creek, both of whose families were hit hard. >> i'm living at my grandma and grandpa's house. >> reporter: the two girls made a presentation about the flood to the school student council telling their story and suggesting a flood fund-raiser. not for their families, though. >> wingy both did it for our neighbors, to help. because they really did need a lot of help. >> reporter: the council agreed and a school-wide goal was set, $5,000. >> i remember when they said $5,000. i kind of wanted them to big a goal more achievable. >> reporter: when spread out among the entire school all jessica's student hs to do to do their part was raise a little more than $200. >> we thought, oh, my god, about we raise that much, we're going to be awesome. and now i don't know what happened. >> so you're adding $21.

calm, overcast skies but we're expecting to see a chance for showers pushing through especially in the north bay and san francisco along the peninsula as well. another thing you'll notice is that we are waking up to chillier temps than what we've seen especially for spring. 39 degrees for santa rosa, san francisco 49 and even in san jose also in the 40s. santa cruz mountains at 43 degrees. here's the band of showers i'm talking about. the majority is still sitting off shore but over the next 1 1/2 to 2 hours that is expect to push in and that's going to bring with it a line of quick moving moderate to heavy downpours and it's going to move mainly from the north to the south and that's also going to bring a possibility of seeing isolated thunderstorms. you can actually see that right now on the doppler radar sitting just off shore. now your highs for today, we are expecting to stay fairly cool in the 50s. the temperature trend is showing that rain as i mentioned coming in at about 9:00, 10:00 a.m.

backyard were so mutilated the body has not been identified yet. investigators are now looking at a missing persons case for a possible connection. a man identified by neighbors as ben was last seen with the suspect. >> told me that ben, that he was taking care of ben's business because ben was in santa cruz taking care of a sick friend. >> well, officers are still gathering clues in this neighborhood near skyline college. a different kind of pepsi challenge. the san francisco police department is now taking issue with pepsi's commercial. you know, the one that they pulled. officers noted the sfpd logo in a behind the scenes clip. it shows kendall jenner settling a protest by offering an officer a pepsi. the logo did not make the final cut but the department is still asking the city attorney to see if pepsi crossed any legal lines by using the logo without

good morning. 7:42. we're waking up to a micro climate alert. the next concern will be a band of showers and a chance for isolated thunderstorms. but if you're just now waking up, good morning. it's a little bit chilly out there especially along the coastline and san francisco 49 and down here san jose and the south bay also in those 40s. definitely a lot chillier than what we would expect for the spring. that doppler radar still showing plenty of moisture sitting off to the north bay. you can actually see a few pop-up thunderstorms on there. that means that will keep the

chance of isolated thunderstorms at least to the early afternoon tapering off by mid-morning. we'll see a band of showers make its way through mainly focussed in the north bay over the next hour to an hour. that will push from the north to south bay. the temps overall today and the highs will be in the 50s. san francisco 56, half moon bay 55 and san jose barely making it into the 60s. we've seen a significant amount of snowfall in the past two days and we are expecting to keep that winter storm warning in effect until about 6:00 tonight. that's because we're still seeing windy conditions up on the mountains. if you had plans to head up to tahoe, please check road conditions before heading out the door. another thing to keep in mind, too, as this storm clears out, it will make for clearer sky, but there will be a beach hazard that will remain in effect through 3:00 p.m. tonight. that's because there's still expected to be a dangerous surf and the possibility of sneaker waves. something to look out for. i know there are a few events

happening around town. a cherry blossom festival in japantown. unfortunately it looks like we'll see a line of showers pushing through 9:00, 10:00 a.m., then on and off through the afternoon. make sure to pack that rain gear and bring an umbrella. we are expecting to keep some showers in the forecast not just for san francisco but also for san jose. rainbow park now by about 4:00, 3:00, 4:00, we should be in the clear, clearing out nicely, but early on still through the 11:00 a.m. hour we're still expecting to see some showers. overall your day planner is looking pretty good after about 3:30. 9:00 a.m. we'll keep that rain early on. wind speeds still on the breezy side, 10 to 20 miles per hour. by noon, 54, the showers will continue starting to decrease by about 3:00 to about 60 degrees inland areas 56 for the bay and then the winds also begin to die

down at about 15 to 20 plus miles per hour decreasing as that night goes on. by 7:00 we see clearing and breezy skies, 50 degrees for the bay. we do catch a break from the rain tonight. heading into sunday as well. now north bay will wake up to very cool temperatures. the chance of seeing some frost as well. please be careful out on the roads. they could still be slick from last night as well. 9:00 a.m. we expect to see 47 degrees along the bay, by 12:00 staying in the 50s. cool sunshine and sunny skies will linger through your sawn and into monday. but look at the next seven day, we keep some dry conditions through monday, then as we head into tuesday, we see an additional system rolling in and that's going to bring the chance of rain sticking around through wednesday, thursday and friday. and right now the long range models are showing a good amount of rainfall expected to come in this upcoming week, actually, shower and rain will stick around from thursday to friday, so we're seeing another storm

but in piedmont any resident can pay extra for workers to retrieve bins from the backyard. >> it's mind blowing. >> reporter: mark works for richmond services. >> just a perfect example of what we're talking about. >> reporter: he points out conditions we're seeing up close. >> taking the bin up the stairs. >> reporter: as we follow the routes from our undercover van. workers pull transport containers up flights of stairs, lift and empty bins over and over and over. and head back downhill carrying full loads. with unlimited recycling and yard waste piedmont residents can have as many bins as they want. half of them have backyard accounts. compare that to mill valley a city of the same size where it's 8% or berkeley that's just as hilly where 1% of homes signed up for backyard pickup. >> it's the constant, the lift and twist.

>> reporter: god free said the lifting wore out his back. >> i believe something came loose and is still popping and is very painful. >> reporter: joseph brown has had three shoulder surgeries. >> the scar from here to here. >> reporter: paul fernandez has gone under the knive four times. he crushed bones in his wrist when he slipped carrying a bin coming down the stairs. >> i can't throw a ball for my grandchildren, i can't pick up my grandchildren. >> reporter: while the company is delivering what it promised, the workers say it's come at a price. they point to 15 people who they believe have been injured on the job. we talked to six who say they needed rehab or surgery. >> we're never trained to lift anything. you just throw a guy out there. you know, that's how we do it. we wingd it. >> reporter: brown raised concerns to the company in 2010 writing our issues with the lack of training and consistency are being unheard. in 2012 he told osha employees are getting injured when they

lift. the company responded to state inspectors saying workers are trained to request assistance or leave the cart if it's too heavy and noted manual lifting is covered in safety meetings. >> there's no right way to lift these toters. >> reporter: but godfrey says the bins, called toters, aren't meant to be lifted by hand. they're only supposed to be hooked up to trucks. do you think this is a problem the company wants to ignore? >> i believe it is. >> reporter: he filed his own complaint with osha and they cited the company saying it did not provide effective training or correct unsafe conditions. we requested an interview with richmond sanitary service but the company says it's appealing osha's decision and won't comment until the case is closed. did you have any idea that these workers were getting hurt on the job? >> none. >> reporter: that's until piedmont city administrator received an anonymous letter from a worker. the city was in the process of crafting a new collection agreement since the current one

ends next summer. benoit is making it a priority in the new contract asking bidders to find ways of minimizing workers comp concerns and that bins should be carried easily and without strain. >> that give us us the ability to audit and hold their feet to the fire. >> reporter: what adjustments can the city make to the contract now to mine mize worker injury for the next year and a half of this contract? >> that's a good question and i actually don't have a good answer to it. we're in a contractual relationship. >> reporter: mark godfrey said he hopes speaking out will prompt the company to take a close are look at safety and training to lighten the load for workers collecting bins in backyards. >> should be one uniform way to do it. and if there's not, eliminate it. bring everything to the curb. >> reporter: the city administrator says that's not likely to happen. but he says in the future residents will be charged per bin which could cut down on the

number of toters they have to lift. a recent audit doesn't discuss safety but notices the company's collection methods are consistent with reasonable industry practices. it is not your typical protest. people ate pizza at several stops in san francisco to protest the citation of a homeless man. that man was eating a slice of pizza at a bus stop when an officer cited him for $250. he showed that ticket to workers at the coalition on homele homelessness. the rules are that you cannot eat at muni stop. but it will be waived if the man appears in court. it's our clear the shelter segment featuring our segment of pets in need. they're looking for a new home

here with ellie and brisa who are both ready for new homes. these guys actually have a unique story. they were rescued from mexico. >> we work with an organization called compassion without borders and they save stray dogs from the streets of mexico. these guys made their journey in mexico and they're ready for adopti adoption. >> what have you seen about their temperament so far? >> temperments are absolutely wonderful. background, we don't know a lot. these dogs are picked up off the streets of mexico. and gathered together and then this organization, this wonderful organization down in the southern part of the state goes into mexico, picks them up, then drops them off to shelters all across california. >> so brisa is full grown. she looks like maybe a terrier mix. >> yeah, some kind of terrier, and she's about noon. >> and brisa means breeze, right, in spanish?

and ellie, what are you expecting in terms of size and what kind of homes would these dogs be best suited for. >> ellie is very shy. about eight months old. she'll grow a little bit. these 25 to 30 pounds right now. she needs room to run and a family that will devote some time and attention. she's real shy overall. she doesn't walk that well on a leash. so she'll need some extra tlc. >> and they were just on the street. so we don't know their background in terms if they were abused in any way or got the attention and love they needed. >> yeah. it doesn't seem like either of them have -- they're loving, they're affectionate now but they are really shy. if they were in a home, then it possibly wasn't a good situation. >> what do people need to know if they want to adopt? >> dom by today. >> come by the shelter. we're open at 12:00 or this weekend and they'll both be available for adoption as soon as we get back to the shelter today. >> great.
