i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. mike is here. vianey is here to give us kind of co-sharing some of the weather duties out there today with kari live at the ballpark, getting ready for the giants game. >> it is fun. i mean, just a big excitement of baseball in the air. kari, you're out there live on the field this morning. >> we think. there she is. >> cool and clear this morning. good morning, you guys. i can't wait for you all to join me later on. yeah, so fairly cool out here. and also, we're feeling some of those temperatures that have been in the 50s this morning. but hey, at least we have no rain, and we're getting ready for a beautiful day out here for the game opener. and want to show you the temperature trend of what you're going to see as we go through the day. going to see those temperatures starting out in the 40s. and also looking at right now 45 degrees in the peninsula, south bay 45 there.

and the tri-valley, 41 degrees. here's a look at where we are right now. and it's in the upper 40s. the highs today reaching 60 degrees in san francisco. and we're going to have an absolutely gorgeous day. we had a nice weekend. it continues today. and we're going to hold off on some more of that rain for a little while longer. vianey will have more on that. as we get ready for the big game today, it's all nice and quiet right now. and we're the first ones to experience this game in the field for the season. and this will be packed and rocking later on today. so we're really excited for that, looking forward to also getting in on some of the nice treats that they have here at the stadium. now, let's head over to mike to see what the road conditions are like as you head out the door. mike, i'm guessing some people will be heading out the door early. >> perhaps, and we'll give you great alternates if you're heading up to at&t park. sounds like you got great parking up there. the roadways are clear, heading

there now, watching the midday game. we're looking at no major problems for these roadways here. i want to take you to the santa cruz mountains where i'm monitoring a crash we hear about between highway 9 and highway 17. locals for the area will know this well. it's right around rolston, watch for that, because that may be affecting your drive between the two freeways at least for the time being. highway 17 also shows slower driving due to overnight maintenance work going on. we'll track that, but so far, getting into the area out of santa cruz moves well in the northbound direction. we're also looking over here toward the east bay drive times. no problems, no delays toward the bay bridge. will get crowded towards san francisco. i'll briv you some alternates to the game coming up. >> thank you. >> now to breaking news on this monday morning. a suspect is dead after a chaotic night in fremont after an officer-involved shooting near a popular park. >> damian trujillo got to the scene in the last hour or so.

he's been following this for us. we understand it's a couple different crime scenes. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sam. yes, at the second crime scene right now here on fremont boulevard in fremont, across the street from that 7-eleven where we reported live about a half hour ago. this is the wall green's shopping center. this is where fremont police officers gave chase after they say a suspect tried to get away late last night just before midnight. details still sketchy here coming out of the scene. it all started just before midnight when an east bay regional parks police officer had a confrontation with a car full of people at a 7-eleven. for an unknown reason at this point, the parks police officer called for emergency backup, saying there was a gun involved. when fremont police arrived on scene, they say a man was trying to get away. they gave chase, even bringing in a helicopter to help in the search. for an unknown reason, at least one police officer fired at the suspect, killing him. we're still trying to determine

if the suspect fired at the officers first or if he even had a gun. the sergeant on scene here says that it's undetermined what prompted his officers to discharge their gun. none of the officers was injured and police say at least one of the other people who stayed in the car was taken in to police headquarters for questioning. again, a lot of unanswered questions at this point. we determined that the investigators will be here on scene for the next several hours trying to piece together what exactly happened. we're live in fremont. damian trujillo, today in the bay. >> hopefully we'll continue to get more information. thank you. 5:05 right now. churches in egypt on heightened alert after two deadly bombing attacks during palm sunday services. in one case, police say a bomb placed under a pew detonated in a church near cairo. in the other, a suicide bomber blew himself up outside a church in alexandria. in all, at least 44 people were killed, many of them children. isis claimed responsibility.

a three-month state of emergency has been declared. >> coptic christians half a world away mourning attacks. >> coptic christians here, worshiper praying for the victims during services last night at st. george coptic church in campbell, while feelings of grief and shock ran deep, so did feelings of solidarity for those who died in northern egypt while practicing their faith. >> condemn what is happening and we pray for our family back home in egypt. we have family members over there. >> in another show of solidarity, religious leaders from different faiths all gathering earlier in the day in san jose. of course, to denounce those attacks. >> campus police at stanford right now still on the hunt for a man who could be behind two attacks, two gropings, to be more specific, of female students on friday night. those assaults happened within 20 minutes and two blocks of one another on escondido road.

in both cases, the groper was described as a short bald man. however, police said they're not ruling out the possibility they could be looking for two different suspects. >> as work ramped up on the new warriors arena, san francisco reportedly providing an assist to low-income residents. examiner reports the city is launching a new program to connect residents with specialized training that will help in arena construction. the city wants to utilize the trainees for another major construction project as well. >> one sports venue that has been around here for a little while, if you have not heard, happening today, the giants home opener against the arizona diamondbacks. love that shot of the big mitt out there in left center field and the coca-cola bottle. today in the bay is on the field this morning at at&t. that's where we find kari hall. >> that's right, but pete suratos is there as well this morning. just as important the games are some of the giveaways that fans are always lining up for. you have a sneak peek at what they're giving away this season, pete? >> good morning to you, laura and sam. i did get a sneak peek last week

during that media day, or a couple weeks ago. a lot of fans are excited for the home opener. we're expecting another sell-out crowd, more than 41,000 fans in attendance. really not a bad seat in at&t park. when they show up, they get the opening day calendar. plenty of fan giveaways throughout the season. we saw a sneak peek of this during the media session. some of the cool ones that fans will get include the johnny quaido bobble head. there's also going to be a jeff samardzija snow globe in honor of the san francisco giants pitcher, and one of the cool ones is the buster posey buster hugs blanket. this is a very cool one. i spoke with the executive vice president of communications explaining how they came up with this idea. >> another one is a buster hugs blanket. buster posey is notorious for his hugs, whenever a pitcher, we win a world series or someone pitched a no-hitter, we created

it looks like a pretty good day for baseball. along the coastline, 40s, half moon bay, 41 degrees. if you're waking up in the south bay, san jose at 45 degrees. morgan hill, 41 degrees. and out near the bay, also staying in the 40s. a live look at the doppler radar, and here are those showers i was mentioning. seeing very light rain in the north bay. nothing too serious, and this is expected to clear out by midafternoon. making way for clearing skies and locally breezy conditions that will be climbing into the 60s. so it's going to be a very spring-like day out there. 63 degrees expecting in santa rosa. san jose, a nice high of about 68 degrees. i want to know how the roads are looking. let's check in with mike. >> let's check out -- oh, you know what? look behind you. the bay bridge is clear right now. we had up until about 30 seconds ago what i wanted to show you. a big rig had stalled there. that's great news. folks were having to swerve around it, now no problems.

let's look at the road conditions. a nice easy drive getting over there, and again, little slowing at the bay bridge. that was starting to build because more cars were heading over there. the freeways continue to rotate around the bay, which sees a lot of south bays on vacation this week. take the golden gate ferry, leaves lurkspur at 11:50 this morning, a special one heading to the game. >> coming up, scott's in studio with business and tech report. we're hearing a bay area tech giant not paying men and women equally. >> we'll get to that, plus, we'll show you how science builds better betters of science. that's coming up.

we are waking up to some pretty chilly temps across the bay area. 40s along the peninsula. 45 degrees, valley, 41. south bay, 45 degrees. now, we're seeing mostly clear skies overall, and we should be warming up quite nicely into the 60s for today. but we're tracking some big changes this week. i'll talk about that coming up in a few mments. mike. >> we're already seeing changes in the tri-valley. westbound 580 shows your expected slowing coming out of the altamont pass. more slowing than we saw last week. tri-valley schools are back in session. >> thank you. wall street back to work this monday morning. seemingly unconcerned about the situation in syria. >> scott mcgrew talks about the

disappointing jobs report. >> all kinds of things that should be weighing the markets down aren't. futures call for a higher opening despite friday's shocker of a job's report showing less than half the jobs created that experts expected. so few, in fact, it doesn't even cover the number of 18-year-olds entering the job market for the month. the dow fell just six points on friday. the federal government is accusing google of paying women less than men. the u.s. department of labor is taking google to court and in court on friday, the dol said it found, quote, systemic compensation padisparities. labor wants the court to take its side as it demands google turn over more pay information, information google wants to keep secret from its competitors. it does work as a federal contractor and rules say it does have to show data, but google hasn't. take a listen, lift your morning

mug of coffee in salute to neil hunt. i knroi have no idea who he is. he's the guy who more or less invented netflix streaming. he took the company from vds to how you use it now. he's living afterly 20 years. netflix hasn't said why, but finally, he's going to have time to watch that "house of cards" that everybody is talking abouto here he can go to today's home opener. the giants are trying out new tech this year. new headphones for the players. they'll listen to electronic pulses that are supposed to stimulate their brains and make them better batters. and they use science to try to prove it. >> the players wore this for 30 minutes before their workouts. and what we saw is a significant gain in the group that got halo versus the control group of athletes who did the exact same training program but didn't wear halo sport. >> actual science in play.

>> there she is, already live at at&t park, tracking the home day opener. you have your fleece on. it's not too cold? >> oh, it's freezing out here. it feels like a cool, damp, you know. and this is not what it will be like later on today. so thankfully, we'll get warmer temperatures. we do start out with cold weather this morning. and we'll be talking about that. i want to talk about also some of the new raunts here that we have at the ballpark at at&t park in san francisco. we have the burrito bowl and also a new organic restaurant. but one that stands out is a new ice cream shop by the name of cream. and if you don't know, it stands for cookies rule everything around me. so we are going to also be able to taste some of their ice cream. they're for their ice cream sandwiches, and you can select two cookies and pick your fave

flavor of ice cream and enjoy. this is family owned and operated. their first store opened in 2010 in berkeley. i had a chance to speak to one of the co-owners who just so happens to be a lifelong giants fan, about what it means to be a part of the giants family. so pretty awesome here to be able to taste some cream here at the ballpark. i want to show you the game day forecast because it starts out cool here, but by the time you get ready to head out to the ballpark, you'll still need the jacket, but we're going to see the temperatures making it into the upper 50s to lower 60s right in time for first pitch. a few more clouds moving in. lower 60s today, and it will be a nice one. i do still think you'll need the fleece jacket and maybe something to protect you from the sunshine. but there will be also a few more clouds mixing in. so it won't be bright and sunny the whole time you're out here. ia know how the wind shifts here

at the ballpark, so make sure you're prepared for that. let's head over to veaniy to get a look at the rest of the microclimate forecast for the bay area. >> when you said it's cold, i believe you. because we're in the 40s and we have definitely been feeling that chill all weekend long. peninsula right now at 45 degrees. tri-valley, a cold 41 degrees. and the south bay, 45 degrees. where kari is right now, 48 degrees on the chilly side, east bay, 48, and the north bay still seeing showers at about 45 degrees. now, the doppler radar is still showing some activity, but mainly off to the north bay, which is why we kept those showers in the forecast through the early morning hours. if we take a quick check of your temperature trend, we are expecting to see a warmup and then we do see an increase in cloud cover later tonight. that's because we are tracking an additional storm cyst expected to bring more rain to the area. by 12:00, about 63 degrees for san jose. all in all, today's microclimate forecast will pan out to be a fairly great day. in the 60s, san francisco

expecting to hit upper 50s and 60s. los gatos, 67. walnut creek, 67, in oakland, 64 degrees. we're definitely going to be seeing pretty good weather today. but if we take a look these hour-by-hour outlook, by about 6:30, still seeing a few showers. fast forward through 8:00, it clears out nicely. then if you notice on tuesday, 4:00 a.m., so tomorrow morning for your morning commute, you're probably going to see overcast skies and early morning fog as well which could make for low visibility because ahead of this, fast forward to about 8:9:00 a.m., and we see showers more along the north bay, so if you have an early commute in the north bay and along the coastline, you can expect to see showers moving in by tuesday. then we're tracking an additional storm system expected to make an impact on wednesday into thursday, but tuesday, scattered showers throughout the bay area. tomorrow, we start seeing more rain. especially out on the roads, mike. >> all right, but not for tonight's game, i hope. that's good stuff. we're looking over toward the

roadways. dry conditions, great conditions for your drive. no major problems on these freeways you're looking at now. but south of silicon valley, looking this. the update, i said it was a crash. it wasn't a crash. it was a tree down. we're trying to avoid knnd crashing into it on bear creek road. so locals know the area well. you see that right around rolston or timberwood, two major intersections there. we'll get you a look at the b.a.r.t. system which can take you to at&t or the area. 41 trains now moving on time. and the giants ferry will leave larkspur at 11:50. let's take waze and show you options. if you're driving from google up in towards the at&t park, and google of course powers waze. it gives you three options now. they're longer than the 101 route, but over the course of the midday traffic, you might want to take a different choice. you can sign up to make your choice to choose our waze team. go to your app and hit the magnifying glass.

a high priced robbery. this is a man who police say stole a $7,000 necklace. this happened in a napa jewelry store last saturday. investigators say he actually tried the necklace on first, then bolted from the store. >> an annual spring break celebration in southern california got a little too crazy over the weekend. this is video from three years ago of an unsanctioned event in isla vista. thousands of students gather there. rowdiness this year led to more than 40 arrests. there's a history here. 14 people including deputies suffered mostly minor injuries, but one woman did fall from a balcony. there's been no update on her condition. 5:26 right now. a dead bat may be the la thing someone wants to find in their salad, but a company is recalling some prepackaged salad mix after a bat was found in a

thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> baseball just makes monday better. i'm laura garcia-cannon. mike is here, vianey is here. cheering some of the weather duties because kari hall is out and about, already up early this morning add at&t park getting ready for the giants home opener. a cool start to the morning,y. >> a little cool? oh, my goodness. yeah, definitely much colder than we had several mornings for the several morningsering rather. we're seeing also clear skies here at the park. and as we get a look at that forecast for today, if you're planning to head here to at&t park, it won't be this cool. okay. it will warm up. we're looking at temperatures that will be in the mid 50s at 11:00. for some of the festivities before the game, at 1:00, as we get ready for first pitch, we'll be in the mid 50s, and going to be staying in the upper 50s today. a little warmer today. but it will be a nice one with

some sunshine mixing in with those clouds. and for the forecast, we are looking at some dry weather, but some changes here on the way. vianey will have more on that. let's head over to mike for a look at the roadways now. >> right now, things are calm, but it will be crowded as we get close to the game time today, this afternoon. a smooth flow of traffic, all around the bay, great for the speed sensors. no problems. silicon valley or tri-valley, just starting a build out of the altamonte. a nice easy drive, 16 minutes. just a little more than last time we checked coming down the east shore freeway and a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, a lot more because the metering lights have been turned on so the toll plaza is still, no problems on the span. >> thank you. an explosive fire over the weekend and now arson investigators are looking into the house fire that woke up an east bay neighborhood with an explosion. this is video from martinez. a next door neighbor shooting the video of the fire a couple

minutes after it started. that person's fire was trying to alert that family that was still inside the home at the time the fire broke out. it quickly spread from the house to the garage and lit a car on fire. that's what led to the explosion. the sound was loud enough to wake up anthony, a neighbor down the block. >> it sounded like a bomb went off. then it just engulfed the car. >> despite the visuals there, thankfully, nobody was injured. now to breaking news we have been following since we came on air at 4:30 this morning. a suspect dead after a chaotic night in fremont. police are investigating an officer-involved shoot near a popular park. >> damian has been covering the story for us. we know it started with a confrontation. what's the latest you're hearing? >> reporter: well, sam, we're now at the third location this morning. this is actually the delivery port behind the strip mall here on fremont boulevard. that's the mobile command unit. this is behind the wallgreens.

investigators are here on the scene trying to determine what happened here. what we know at this point is it all started before midnight when an east bay regional park police officer had a confrontation with a car full of people at 7-eleven across the street. for an unknown reason, the police officer called emergency backup, saying there was a gun involved. fremont police arrived on scene, they say a man was trying to get away. they gave chase, but for a while, they could find the suspect. so they brought in a helicopter to help. >> we have issues to deal with right now, darkness, there's actually a large field just behind the walgreens area where the incident took place. and after that, there are residential houses. at that point, it became more containment, let's make sure where the person is, hence the helicopter unit. >> reporter: and for an unknown reason, at one fremont police officer discharged his gun,

striking that suspect. that man is now dead. none of the officers involved in this incident was injured in this confrontation. a lot of unanswered questions. we do not know why the officers fired their guns at the suspect. we don't know if the suspect was armed. even though the call came in as a gun involved in the emergency back backup. crime scene investigators will be here for a while because their mobile command unit remains here. this is a delivery port behind the walgreens on fremont and ducotto. that's the latest. i'm damian trujillo. >> thank you for the latest there. >> it's 5:35. the search continues this morning for a missing san jose state student. kevin redrico was reportedly spotted in vulayo or benicia area and he's still missing this morning. the 23-year-old disappeared wednesday, prompting a search by police and loved ones. they found kaz. people on paddleboards and jet

skis combed the area yesterday. his father said his son had been taking antidepressants, but he doesn't think kevin is a danger to himself. his brother remains worried. >> can't tell you the mental state he's in. he's out here. i have no idea where he is. >> they desperately want to see him come home safely. if you spot him, call vallejo police. >> 5:36 right now. police in san jose reportedly looking for a group vandals who trashed several brand-new houses. the mercury news reports the vandals broke into five homes on rosemont court and rosemore avenue. they went in and broke doors, damaged appliances and trashed the interiors of the homes. the estimated damage, $50,000. agents debuted those homes on saturday just before the vandals struck. home opener against the diamondbacks happens today. the light are already on at at&t park, and that field is ready. >> very green and very lush.

we're going to get to kari, but right now, pete is joining us. there are some changes at the ballpark. somable, some not. tell us about it. >> good morning to you, sam and laura. the home opener is finally here for the giants. we're here at at&t park. yes, some new things for fans to check out. here at the popular coca-cola fan lot. maybe when you're down here, you can give the slide a shot. of course, fans will enjoy that. and a new thing they're going to do, over in right field, the sf park flag. that's going to be raised after every victory this seize. hopefully it's raised today. i am going to show you the toyota fan zone. it's bare right now, but i promise you they're renovating it. we talked to giants representatives. they say this is a new field for kid to play in. essentially a baseball diamond will be built. i talked with the giants president about some of the renovations. here's what he had to say. >> we're going to be expanding the zone we have for kids. the toyota fan zone is going to

be geared to kids. a great running area. toyota will have a display, chocolate. it's going to be fantastic. >> and there's also going to be a cool deal where folks can pay $99 for two tickets to go to any game in april. that's a cool deal this season. coming up in the next half hour, we're going to go to the field and check out the dugout and hear from some of your favorite giants players about how excited they are for today's home opener. >> we're always excited for the big game. you can watch the game on nbc sports bay area, 1:35 this afternoon. sam and i will be live at the ballpark for an 11:00 newscast later. kari hall is giving us the game day forecast. vianey is in the house giving us the forecast for today and the rest of the week. >> she's rather cold right now, but at least it will warm up into the 60s. we're going to go from 40s to 60s. san francisco expecting upper 50s and a high of 60s degrees.

walnut creek, 67. oakland, 64. palo alto, 65. all in all, expecting clearing skies and then a very nice afternoon. but over the next seven days, we have big changes ahead. we're expect a few storm systems to push through. that's going to bring a chance for showers as we into tomorrow. wednesday and thursday as well. it looks like as of now, long range models are showing an additional system creeping in by next sunday. we definitely have major changes ahead. at least today, it's going to be great weather, which i don't think folks can ask for more than that, at least not on monday. >> expectations on monday are not so high. we just want to get through. we have the giants game today. a mild build for the south bay. no problems for the peninsula as far as speed sensors go. i'll take you to the upper east shore freeway. a crash causing slowing over the last five minutes here westbound 80, coming off the car kens

bridge. there's a crash, and one vehicle is in the lanes. no major injuries reported, but a quick slowdown that's forming. we'll track that as you head over off the carquinez bridge. the maze is very smooth. avoid that by taking b.a.r.t. because that will take you out of the water, 47 trains on time. a great option heading over to the city for the game. the giants ferryulse a good option. that leaves larkspur at 11:50 this morning. caltrain will take you by the ballpark, but there have been schedule changes today. whether you're taking it to the, check your schedule for minor changes. >> good to know. thank you. 5:40. coming up, neil gorsuch gets sworn in today as a supreme court justice. >> and our secretary of state gets ready to take on russia on day 81. we'll take a look when today in the bays. =m

castro valley. >> thank you very much. 5:43 on your monday. new this morning, state auditors are reportedly looking into whether hundreds of thousands of dollars in work that was paid for was never actually done in san jose schools. mercury news reporting that the audit involved at least $300,000 in work for schools in alum rock. the audit comes amid complaints some schools lack basic amenities. the contractor did not issue a response. >> scott mcgrew has been keeping his eye on washington. >> and scott, a big day today for neil gorsuch. >> yeah, our next associate chief justice of the united states. gorsuch will be sworn in twice, sam. once in a private ceremony at the supreme court, and then again publicly at the white house rose garden. gorsuch, of course, approved by the u.s. senate after senate republicans changed the rules, chose the so-called nuclear option to push that nomination through. this brings the supreme court back up to its regular strength, and it is a relief for justice
