decades. the palm sunday choir st. georges church in tanta was just beginning to sing. then, this. the pews, stained with blood. parishioners in shock, many dead. the government says a bomb was hidden under a pew close to the altar. [ speaking foreign language ] >> reporter: there was blood everywhere, this man says. all of the windows were shattered. security was right on the door. on a holiday, there should have been more security. hours later at the gates of the cathedral in alexandria, a suicide bomber tried to get inside. a child was playing inside the courtyard when the bomber blew himself up. this policeman who died in the blast stopped him. in all, more than 40 dead and egypt's christian minority angry and afraid. a group affiliated with isis claimed responsibility for the bombings. but nbc news has not been able to authenticate that claim. the terror group vowing to ramp

up against christians. last december, a suicide bomber killed 28 at a cathedral in cairo. egypt's president abdel fattah el-sisi declared a state of emergency and put more troops on the streets. he's promised to protect christians and fight isis. president trump calling him a key ally during their meeting last week. the president tweeting his support sunday. and overnight, offering condolences and a phone call. as christians observed the holiest week of the year, pope francis prayed for the victims during palm sunday mass. egypt, once again is mourning. christians here wondering if they can ever be safe. at this hour, more funerals here in egypt. both christians and muslims were among the dead. and there's more questions about security at those churches, whether people were properly screened before going inside. all of this coming, as pope francis prepares to visit this country at the end of this month. the vatican says, that visit will go forward.

matt? savannah? >> kelly cobiella in cairo for us. thank you very much. this is a crucial week for the white house on several fronts. in the wake of last week's missile strikes, the trump administration is vowing to keep up the pressure on the syrian regime. but lawmakers on capitol hill want more specifics on the long-term strategy for syria. as for north korea, its provocative behavior has a u.s. navy strike group led by uss "u carl vinson" aircraft carrier moving towards the korean pens l.a. >> all of this is creating tensions with russia. and things could come to a head tomorrow when secretary of state tillerson arrives in moscow. he will be the first trump cabinet member to visit there. and he's expected to press the kremlin on its failure to prevent syria's use of chemical weapons. and neil gorsuch is the newest supreme court justice. he is being sworn in a private ceremony ahead of a public one in the white house rose garden

later this morning. >> for more on all of this, let's turn to peter alexander at the white house this morning. peter, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, savannah, good morning to you. >> reporter: president trump praising the service members playing a part in the syrian air strike. the young administration is getting praise for acting decisively. but left unanswered is what happens next. the president's u.n. ambassador says removing president bashar al assad from power is a priority, which would mark a dramatic shift in the administration's policy towards syria. first, the air strike. now, new questions about the strategy going forward. >> our priority is first the defeat of isis. >> of course it's to defeat isis. we've got to do that for peace and stability in the area. >> reporter: u.n. ambassador nikki haley and secretary of state rex tillerson in agreement on isis but offering mixed messages about what's next for syrian president bashar al assad. >> no way do we see peace in that area with assad the head of that government. >> reporter: tillerson, insisting no change in u.s. policy.

suggesting that assad's future should be up to the syrians with the international community involved. >> if we can navigate a political outcome in which the syrian people will decide his fate and his legitimacy. >> reporter: critics, including republicans, are quick to pounce. assad yes and isis no. this focus you can defeat isis as long as assad is there is not true. >> reporter: the president back in the white house after a summit with the chinese leader and a weekend of golf, now facing criticism for the decision not to strike the runways at the air base. they are easy and inexpensive to fix, fill in and top. others blasting assad's move, launching warplanes from that same airfield, hours after the u.s. strike. >> here is what i think assad is telling trump by flying from this base, f you. >> reporter: meanwhile iran speaking out about the usair strike saying it crossed red lines and they will now respond with force to any future aggressor. the new tension as tillerson

heads to moscow, where he will sit down with russian's foreign minister, a meeting with vladimir putin a possibility. many democrats in agreement that russia bears some responsibility. >> absolutely they're complicit. russian intelligence may not be as good as ours. but it's good enough to know that the syrians had chemical weapons. >> reporter: pivoting from the middle east to the korean peninsula, the u.s. military now ordering an aircraft area strike group to the region. can at least five ships, after north korea's latest missile test. calling kim jong-un's weapons program, reckless and irresponsible. >> clearly he has made significant advancements in delivery systems. that is what concerns us the most. >> reporter: also new overnight in washington, back here in white house, as air force one returned to joint base andrews, what appeared to be a close call with another plane. look at this. reporters on the flight noticed a c-17 military transport plane flying what they described to be a close distance from air force one.

holding an hour long meeting friday afternoon with chief strategist steve bannon and the president's son-in-law jared kushner. bannon and kushner have been at odds over just about every policy issue with bannon calling kushner and his allies west wing democrats. >> he is willing to blow things up. he feels most comfortable when there is chaos. >> reporter: a source familiar with the friday meeting tells nbc news, the discussion was aimed at reducing that chaos, convincing both sides to bury the hatchet. the president, himself, pleased with where things ended up. all of it becoming a distraction for the white house. >> if donald trump abandons the people who elected him, and bannon does respect that wing of the republican party, he's going to be in trouble. >> one of these people is not like the other because his father-in-law is president of the united states. that makes him a little bit unfireable. >> reporter: amid turmoil kushner's role seems to be expanding. last week, traveling with the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff to iraq, while speculation swirled that bannon could be on

his way out, after he was ousted from the national security council. a source close to bannon insisting he ain't going anywhere. and this weekend, the national security adviser, h.r. mcmaster downplaying bannon's departure. >> steve bannon provides the president with advice on a broad range of issues and will continue to do so. >> reporter: another shake up to tell you about in the nsc, k.t. mcfarland brought in as deputy to michael flynn is now out herself. her new role, ambassador to singapore, which does require congressional approval. matt? savannah? >> kristen welker, thank you. meantime, robert bentley is facing impeachment hearings that start today. the 74-year-old is accused of abusing power to cover up the affair. kerry sanders is in montgomery this morning with more on that. kerry, good morning to you. >> good morning. governor robert bentley will be the first alabama official to face impeachment in this state in more than a century.

this all stems from a relationship he had with an aide half his age. the lurid details which have rocked this state. this morning, a scathing, new report setting the stage for the possible impeachment of alabama governor robert bentley, claiming he abused his power to cover up an affair. >> let me kiss that left ear, okay? >> reporter: allegations of a steamy relationship between the 73-year-old governor and rebekah mason, an aide nearly half his age, came to light a year ago. the governor purportedly heard in racy phone conversations with mason. >> when i stand behind you and i -- and i put my arms around you, and i put my hands on your [ bleep ] and just pull you in real close, hey, i love that, too. >> reporter: those recordings, made by the governor's former wife, diane, and turned over to authorities. >> what the relationship provides is motive and context.

>> reporter: jack sharmon is the special counsel who investigated the case against the governor. there were glaring indicators of a romance. like the time the governor accidentally sent a text to his wife, diane, saying, i love you, rebekah. and to keep his affair secret, the report found the governor encouraged in atmosphere of intimidation. >> we found not only an inappropriate relationship but the use and misuse of law enforcement and other state resources. >> reporter: the governor hasn't specifically admitted it's him on the tapes. and both he and mason have denied there was ever a physical relationship. but bentley has apologized to constituents, while refusing growing calls to step down. >> i do not plan to resign. i have done nothing illegal. >> reporter: governor bentley, despite what he says there, says

he's not google to resign. there are published reports today that he will, indeed, resign before these impeachment proceedings are completed. at the end of the day, if he were to resign, it would not shield him from the criminal charges. matt, savannah. >> kerry sanders in alabama. kerry, thank you. now, to major travel headaches for airline passengers. this morning, delta is struggling to recover, after storms forced the airline to cancel thousands of flights. nbc's tom costello covers aviation press. he's at reagan national this morning. tom, good morning to you. what a mess. >> reporter: yeah. savannah, five days since the storms. part of the problem is as the airline tries to recover, they have to max out their pilot schedules, their flying days and give them the minimally required time off for rest every day. tens of thousands of people have been inconvenienced, pilots are upset and delta is in damage control. this morning, delta airlines is still battling a perfect storm of problems.

>> it really upset and really exhausted. >> horrendous. horrendous. >> reporter: since wednesday, the airline has canceled more than 3,500 flights, more than 3,700 delayed. it all started in the midst of spring break travel when a severe storm forced a three-hour ground stop at atlanta's hartsfield airport. a major hub, where 60% of its fleet cycles through every day. >> it's stressful. >> reporter: angry passengers went to twitter with #deltameltdown. tested time and time again. the airline going on damage control, dishing out 800 pizzas to hungry travelers and shelling out cash to people on overbooked flights. one family sacrificing their entire florida vacation. >> this is goodwill and the law that delta had to give this money. i walked away feeling really good. they have a passenger for life.

in studio 1a. here's what's making headlines this morning. some new fallout over those u.s. air strikes in syria. russian and iranian forces will respond with force if more attacks are launched. sunday, the state department is condemning the twin suicide bombings at christian churches in egypt. more than 40 people were killed in those attacks. 100 others injured. isis claimed responsibility. a frightening scene in new hampshire overnight. crews were battling a massive fire that started at a restaurant and bar when the building collapsed. everybody inside made it out safely. but one firefighter did suffer minor injuries. also this morning, the manhunt is intensifying for a wisconsin man suspected of plotting a mass attack. police say he stole an arsenal of weapons before sending a 161-page manifesto to president

trump. nbc's blake mccoy has that story this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: authorities are on-edge with this hely-armed fugitive on the run. police believe he has plans to carry out an attack. right now, the desperate search to find him. this morning, authorities say wisconsin's most wanted man could be anywhere. >> we don't know if he's in janesville, in wisconsin, or some place else in the nation. >> reporter: joseph jakubowski has been on the run almost a week. he was caught on surveillance video on tuesday, breaking into a gunshot in his hometown of janesville, making off with 16 firearms, a bullet-proof vest and a helmet. 30 minutes later his car was in flames. this video was taken of jakubowski at the post office as he mailed a rambling 161-page

their closed door congress to decide what case to take next. there's several on which he could cast a decisive vote. there's one that's been bouncing around for weeks, a test of whether businesses can refuse to provide their services for same-sex weddings if they have ljs objectio religious objections. another case whether the second administration provides the right to have a gun outside of the home. it was in 2008 when the supreme court said the second amendment provides for to have a gun inside the home for self-defense. and then the supreme court comes into the courtroom next week for the final 13 cases of this term and the big one there is a religious freedom case. it comes from missouri. a challenge to laws in about half the states that say that state money cannot be given directly or indirectly to churches. now a lutheran church in missouri applied for money under a state program to resurface its playgrounds. the state said no, you can't

have the money. the challengers said no there's discrimination when other nonprofits would get the gun. he can't vote on the cases that were argued before he got here but he will hit the ground running. >> absolutely. let's go over to the white house where peter alexander is standing by. we should mention the newest justice neil gorsuch, 49 years old. could potentially spend decades on the court. this is one of the momentous choices that a president can make. >> reporter: you're right. i spoke to a top conservative here today that said this is perhaps the most important decision the president will make. a supreme court justice makes longer than any other pick he will make. and politically it's his biggest tr triumph so far. finally the president has something to hang his hat on, even skbroeked in the remarks saying i got it done within 100

the outside of it. >> how long do you sere it on each side? >> until it's nice and brown. probably five or six minutes on each side. make sure you continue to sere it and turn it, just like this. and then, what i do, is amake a glaze. a sweet and sour mint glaze. no more mint jelly. honey, red wine vinegar. some dijon mustard and fresh mint. that becomes your glaze. and you want to save a little bit to serve on the side. that's it. and we're going to take this. and we're going to glaze the lamb on the outside. this goes the oven after you sear it. and you have a beautiful leg of lamb. and you can baste it with that sauce, every 15 or 20 minutes. >> that's what it looks like. >> we're going to serve a couple of thicks with it. i like yogurt with lamb.
