tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  April 11, 2017 6:00am-7:01am PDT

6:00 am
kari has a look at the forecast. >> it makes it easier to get up and get moving quicker, knowing that you need to drive and slow it down this morning with some wet roads around the bay area. so you need to hurry up and get ready so thattia can take your time getting to work or school, as we're seeing mist and drizzle around the bay area. looks like lot of activity here on the radar, but it's been very light. and this is the kind of rain we'll see throughout the day. you have to turn on the windshield wipers and the roads may be more slick in spots as we continue to see the rain moving through. as we get a look at what to expect as we go through today, light showers here and there. cloudy skies and breezy winds. also a little cooler than yesterday. we won't see the sunshine as we had yesterday afternoon. more changes down the line as we take a look at tomorrow's forecast some gusty winds and scattered rain. i'll detail that coming up in about eight minutes. heading over to mike, tracking a crash in san jose. >> that's right.
6:01 am
despite the roadways and passes, we're looking at a light commute. you will have a chance to slow it down and still get there on time. look at how much green is on the sensors. as far as speed, mostly at the limit. a little slowing approaching 101 and oakland road. that crash is on the shoulder. a distraction, and not a major impact. in fact, the camera here at 101 north of 680, let's look and see it's not impacting anything back here. a little slowing toward alum rock, but 680, 280, 101 interchange moves well. one more live look at the north bay. the 101 is picking up in volume. nothing unusual, but there will be damp roadways throughout the commute. >> thank you very much. 6:01. breaking news out of santa clara where recovery efforts will begin in this backyard after this, a driver plunged his car into a swimming pool. >> quite the picture there. bob redell joining us live from the home, getting more insight into what might have happened in
6:02 am
the moments before the accident, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam and laura. we did speak with a santa clara police department. they say they believe the driver was falling asleep, and we heard the driver say he took too big of a turn and was falling asleep when he crashed through two fences, a metal gate and a wooden fence into the backyard of this home on the corner of calabasas and warburton in the city of santa clara. you can see on our camera, a live picture of where he ended up. he ended up in the deep end of this backyard swimming pool here. at this home. this happen around 3:00 this morning. the santa clara fire department also released photos that shows what looks like a white or silver sedan. it's fully submerged. the young man behind the wheel was able to escape unharmed. was not hurt. santa clara police tell us he's 19 years old. he was given a field sobrie test and that he passed. he was not arrested so he might
6:03 am
be later cited for unsafe or reckless driving. he said he was dozing off, mishandled the turn here at calabasas when he lost control of the car. the homers are not here. police believe they might be out of town. and they say they will try to reach out to them later in the day to let them know what happened in their backyard. it's going to take more than a tow truck to remove the car because they don't want to damage the pool. the police department says it will probably require an industrial crane. bob redell, today in the bay. >> imagine the homeowners coming home to that. >> 6:03 this morning. san bernadino elementary school remains closed as the community continues to cope with yet another devastating loss. right now, people are trying to understand why a gunman went into his estranged wife's school and killed her. along with an 8-year-old student. >> it's unimaginable. you would never think you would have to go through something this with your kids. >> the entire community is feeling victimized again, a year
6:04 am
and a half after the san bernadino terror attacks. jonathan gonzalez from our nb bx krc affiliate in los angeles has more. >> good morning from san bernadino. we're right outside of north park element school where there is a vigil showing that this community has begun the healing process. we do know that the investigation into exactly what took place at the school yesterday has also begun. we know that the shooter has been identified as cedric anderson, a 53-year-old man who went into north park elementary school and shot his wife, 53-year-old karen smith, a teacher of a special needs class. standing behypoher, an 8-year-old and 9-year-old special needs student. the 8-year-old was shot and killed. he died on the way to the hospital. the 9-year-old, we understand, is still in critical condition. the shooter had taken his own life immediately afterwards. the question now begins into how exactly the shooter was able to get inside the school. police telling us yesterday that all the proper procedures were followed by the school, that the
6:05 am
shooter actually went into the office, probably recognized by staff as being the husband of the teacher, and simply went and told them that he was there to drop something off with the teacher, so they likely let him in with ease. he went right into the classroom and all of this incident began, ending horrifically here as this community begins to heal, there were a lot of people here yesterday waiting anxiously to pick up their children. a lot of frantic hoping that they didn't have to hear the worst. a lot saying the first thing they did was hug their child and tell them they love them and they have to begin the process of whether or not to talk to their child about exactly what happened. there will be resources for the parents and a lot of parents have been told to simply listen to their child. a lot of children simply thought they were on a field trip when they were transported to cal state san bernadino to make sure they were safe and evacuated from the school. there's still a scene here this morning. it will likely look like this here for the next couple days,
6:06 am
right outside north park, strong police presence as the investigation continues into exactly what happened. we know the school here in north park elementary school will be closed for at least two more days. back to you. >> heart breaking news there in that community twice now. >> 6:06 on your tuesday morning. this is a live look at san jose's valley medical center. that's where authorities are reporting some kind of peeping incident took place. last night, santa clara county deputies tweeted out that 25-year-old furaw ha ali of jose had been arrested for peeping. so far, deputies have not indicated if the man is a hospital worker or what exactly he did to spy on patients. more to come. authorities in the east bay fear there could be more victims after the recent arrest of a former school worker. he's accused of sex crimes against children. police last month arrested 60-year-old reuben gonzalez of pinole. he's accused in a string of crimes of four young people over a 15-year period.
6:07 am
investigators say the victims all lived at his. gonzalez worked for the west contra costa unified school district over six years in various roles including custodian and yard supervisor. >> part of why we're putting the media release out because if there are other victims, they have the strength to come forward. >> gonzalez is held in martinez on $46 million bail. >> apparently, two is not better than one. for parents who tried to get their twins into separate san francisco bublic schools this year. examiner reports parents who enter their twins separately in the city's annual school lottery ended up having their children mistakenly linked together. for one, it meant virtually no chance the students would get into the schools they parents were shooting for. instead, the twins received offers from what the parents considered least favorable schools. >> happening today, animal rights acts are offering an award to the mayor of berkeley.
6:08 am
month, berkeley city council members banned the sale. peta is applauding the decision. they plan to show their appreciation by giving the mayor an award that has animal themed candy. >> learning more information about the shark that ended up dead on a santa cruz beach on sunday. we told you this weekend how the great white swam ashore on to pleasure point beach. it was later found dead near the wharf. it caused brain lesions in the shark. animal experts say the pathogen is unlike any kind of bacteria that has been seen in sharks before. >> wow, frightening, no doubt, for everyone on the beach. that shark could not be saved. luckily, firefighters did manage to rescue a group of dirklings. >> they were caught in a newark storm drain on sunday. alameda county fire posted this rescue on instagram. how they ended up in the drain, we don't know, but the firefighters relocated them to a
6:09 am
nearby creek so they could be ryued with their parents. >> hardly ugly ducklings. >> spring has sprung. >> kari hall, what are you tracking? rain right now? >> yeah, right rain. 6:09 on this tuesday. spring time, you always see a lot of ducks in central park. when you head out today, there may be mist and drizzle moving through. even during this afternoon, we're definitely seeing that right now. pretty good coverage on the radar from the east bay over towards the north bay as well as the south bay. a little bit of a break for the peninsula and san francisco. but it will be raining at times. not going to measure a lot out of this, and mainly cloudy skies throughout the morning, as you get the kids ready, get them out the door, make sure they have on a rain jacket. at recess, we will still have cloudy skies, cool temperatures and breezy with spotty rain throughout the day. we will have a dose of heavier rain tomorrow detail that, and three minutes, a look at the
6:10 am
temperature trend in willow glen. >> activity on the shoulder, and no one injured at the scene, at least that's the report from chp. that's good news. 10, all over the bay, great news. we'll take you over to the tri-valley, and we have 680, a little slowing there. a little slowing for hayward, but remember, 6:10 on a tuesday, we off see much heavier traffic. spring break on rotation around the bay. san jose unified off this week. that adds to a benefit for the morning in the south bay. eefrb over here, 17 minutes and 16 minutes for 680 and 880 respectively as you're heading south off 580, and no delays for the transit system. check caltrain. back to you. >> coming up next, a mystery in the skies. >> did you guys see that? >> took her breath away. what experts think might have been behind the bright flash of
6:11 am
light in southern california overnight. >> plus, no mystery at united airlines. they're in a lot of trouble this morning. everybody talking about it. we'll take a further look coming up in business.
6:12 am
6:13 am
cloudy skies right now over san jose at 6:13. getting up and getting ready. you can take the dog out for a walk, you definitely need a
6:14 am
jacket, as we see light showering through and temperatures starting out in the mid 50s. as we go through the day, a lot of cloudy skies, and take the umbrella just in case. we could see light showers moving through. i'll talk more about that and a look at the forecast for the sierra at about 6:19. >> a smooth drive around the bay, but we have a big red number here in the bottom. that means are really slow out of vallejo. typical. we'll show you the new crash i'm tracking in the east bay. >> all right, we'll check back with you. thank you. >> 6:14 now. the night sky was lit up in parts of southern california last night. pretty dazzling display had people wondering what caused it. >> did you guys see that? >> quite a surprise for that woman. residents reported seeing the bright flashes. some even catching it on camera. earlier claimed a plane caused them. officials say there was no evidence to support that a plane had crashed.
6:15 am
it's now believed the crashes were part of a meteor shower. >> pretty cool to catch that on camera. >> one of the police officers who dragged a paying passenger off a united airlines flight, we have all been talking about this now, has been suspended. >> no doubt you have seen the video by now. united seems to be making it worse. >> it does. number of pr experts, they were startled by the video, but flabbergasted by united airlines' handling of it. you have seen it by now. probably from several angles. a man with a ticket and a seat told he had been randomly selected to leave. to make way for deadheading united crew members. witnesses explained, say he explained he was a doctor and needed to get home. in his initial statement, united said the man refused to volunteer. nobody can refuse to volunteer. those words mean opposite things. then, united called in the chicago police and airport security. their errors continued.
6:16 am
chicago police in a statement said the man injured himself when he fell against an arm rest so that's not what happens on video. united doubled down with a public statement in which united's ceo oscar munoz said he was sorry the passenger had to be reaccommodated. thousands of people on social media rolled their collective eyes over the world reacc reaccommodat reaccommodated. this is not video of a man being reaccommodated. munoz, by the way, was named pr communicator of the year just last month by pr week magazine. the judges said he transformed the fortune of the beleaguered airports. people compare this to the disaster of pepsi. munoz used to be an executive at pepsi. there's still a number of questions. what did united tell chicago police? would the chicago police have responded the way they did if they knew they were ejecting a paying customer entitled to a seat to make room for a united employee as part of a business
6:17 am
decision? it was not a safety issue. for that matter, who is the passenger? we know he was taken to the hospital. but we don't know much beyond that. and we asked this questionier, and let us know what you think on facebook twitter. what would you have done? passengers loudly objected. you can hear them saying, my god. my god. they videoed it. that's helpful. would you have stood up and said, no, hold on. let's not beat another person for an airline. let's protect the dignity of people and human beings. you can have my seat. or when they came for the man in 18-c, would you have said nothing? i don't know. i wasn't on the airplane. you're instructed to stay calm, stay out of the police's way, et cetera. is there a point where you say hold on? >> in day and age, everyone has video cameras. you have to know that as well. >> it's good they do because now there's accountable for united airlines. the passengers were outraged. taking action, a different step. >> one more step, and in this
6:18 am
day and age, maybe we need to take one more step. >> 6:17 right now. be careful you don't get vertigo. have you seen this? when you dive into this new pool in houston, texas, you go to the edge, and it extends over beyond the side of the building. ten feet over the side of the 42nd floor. the guy in the pool that hangs kind of over the building. it's called the sky pool. it's at a luxury apartment complex in the heart of that city. by the way, there's also a fourth floor pool for i guess people who are less adventurous. that's got to be a strange feeling. >> it is pretty cool. looks like something you would find in dubai or some middle easternry where they have these really luxurious hotels. >> if you have a fear of the water or heights, maybe not a good combo. >> yeah. >> torturing yourself. >> we all respect nik wallenda and the high wire acts. we don't want to be him.
6:19 am
>> i'm scare offend heights. you won't catch me close to the top of the building there. >> as you head out this morning, we are going to have spotty rain moving in, and it's been fairly light for the bay area. here's a live look outside at san francisco. as you get ready to head out, it's a little milder than yesterday. but unforchly, it's not dry. we'll see some rain off and on, some very light sprinkles. that's what we have seen so far. that's what you'll see as we go through the day, and the seven-day forecast starts out in san francisco with some rain for today, tomorrow, and thursday. okay, so we do have several weather systems that will be moving in. this one that's rolling through the bay area right now is very weak. it's 54 degrees in san francisco. 52 degrees in fairfield. pallo alt, 55, and san jose at 56 degrees. looking at those temperatures, closer for the south bay and los gatos, expect a high today of 69 degrees. and a mix of sun and clouds. don't expect a lot of sunshine
6:20 am
today. you'll be up to 56 degrees in livermore and walnut creek, and hayward today, 67. 62 in san mateo and san francisco up to 60 degrees in the mission district and the north bay, 64 degrees. so it looks like there's a lot of rain going on here, but it's been very light. and this weather system will continue to move through. we'll see cloudy skies throughout the morning. we are at 10:00 this morning. we do see light rain moving through. some spotty sprinkles even into thisening. then we'll have a better chance of rain in the forecast for tomorrow. getting the kids heading up toward tahoe, make sure you bring the tire chains. we'll see off and on rain, even some snow showers. a live look at heavenly. it's 29 degrees and look at how much snow we're going to see. over the next three days, there could be another foot of snow. maybe even up to 21 inches of snow between now and friday in kingville. looking good there. you're tracking a crash pinoll.
6:21 am
>> i am. not a major crash. actually, may not be a crash. just getting the update now. sounds like a disabled vehicle. we'll see how that develops. sometimes they can be related. one incident turns into another. we hope things stay clear for the south bay. it's over here in pinole. the disabled pickup truck is the latest update. blocking one lane, but sometimes that does lead to a fender bender. slow for the area. light slowing there, and for the rest of the east shore freeway, no major problems. the bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights are on. for berkeley, i want to use the waze system. we showed you this, no problem. in fact, any way you went was about the same. now, it's registering at 53 minutes out of antioch and toward the walnut creek interchange, if you cut down here, that cuts off 15 minutes. waze forecasts what time you
6:22 am
should leave. make sure you're on our team. look here, you can click on the magnifying glass, then your name at the top. click towards team at the bottom, and again, select nbc bay area wazers. if you didn't specifically select us as your team, do that. help us join the community and leverage that power, guys. back to you. >> way to go. 15 minutes. that's an eternity in the morning. >> 6:22 right now. up next, a spinach surprise. the creepy crawly discovery inside a bag of prepackaged spinach. >> she redeemed airline miles for a quicker route through airport security. but is left standing in line with the rest of us. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. nbc bay area responds next.
6:23 am
6:24 am
6:25 am
welcome back, everyone. 6:25. nbc bay area responds to a fremont woman who redeemed airline miles for a perk that would make traveling quicker and easier. but she never received it. >> we would like to clear that up for her. investigator chris chmura joining us with the full story. >> last summer, carol cook jumped on a southwest airlines offer to redeem 9,000 points for tsa precheck. it seemed like a great deal because tsa precheck grants travelers a fast track through security. it's usually $85 plus a background check. well, after carol cashed in her points and passed the background check, she says she never received precheck status. she called southwest and the
6:26 am
airline told her, well, it was mailed to her. this is typical. precheck is a nine digit combination of letters and numbers the tsa assigns to you and mails to you. carol says she did not get it. and she couldn't get anyone to help her. so she reached out to us. we contacted southwest. it did some internal research and sorted things out. carol is now precheck approved and will be breezing through airport security lines. southwest said to us that we regret any inconvenience and we're happy to work with ms. cook to resolve this issue. millions of savvy travelers choose precheck, but if you're going to be flying overseas, we recommend exploring a program called global entry. global entry helps you speed through immigration lines. it's a little more expensive than precheck. it's $100. but precheck is included in that fee. and you get both for $100. but heads up, sometimes global entry can take months to get into because of a backlog. if you have a consumer complaint, let us know.
6:27 am
888-996-tips or online at nbcbayarea.com/responds. >> all right, thank you, chris. i'm pretty sure next story is a consumer complaint chris would not want to receive. new this morning, a maryland couple found a surprise in their food. >> they found a scorpion in their prepackages spinach, and it was alive. the couple said they didn't say what dwroeshry store they purchased the spinach from, but they got it on friday night. the woman who noticed the scorpion yesterday opened the bag to try to make her. the scorpion was said to be small enough to be caught in a water bottle. she took a video of it with her phone and sent a video of it to her husband. they brought the bottle to the store to show them the problem. the company did not recall the product but pulled the spinach off the shelves. >> coming up next, a string of sexual assaults at a bay area
6:28 am
university. now a new investigation under way, this time at a fraternity. >> two dogs leave a bay area park foaming and vomiting. the chemical on the grass the owners think may be responsible for it.
6:29 am
6:30 am
a very good tuesday morning to you. 6:30 right now. taking a live look at our radar where rain is coming down in parts of the bay area. how long will this last? good morning to you, and thanks
6:31 am
so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. for those of us who have gunk all over our cars, how long do we have to wait to get a car wash, kari? and this could go on for the rest of the week. >> it will be off and on for today, tomorrow, as well as thursday. a couple dry days in the forecast. but you just want to be prepared for it all because we will have rain moving through the bay area. a look at all of our microclimates and the cameras. what to expect when you head out the door. it's 54 degrees. feeling milder in the peninsula right now. breezy winds. off and on showers and mainliy skies. 50 degrees in the north bay with times of rain moving through. as we go into this afternoon, we'll only get a few peeks of sunshine. sprinkles here and there. highs reaching into the mid to low 60s. up to 63 degrees today in the east bay. getting you ready for the week. i'll show you the weekend forecast and a few events going on coming up in seven minutes. mike is checking in on a crash in concord. >> that's right. still light as far as the traffic flow goes.
6:32 am
i wanted to make sure we got the reason for all the slowing. not in the south bay or peninsula, not even for tri-valley. it's in cord. southbound 680, just before you get to 680, southbound 242 is jammed up approaching 680 where a crash does block at li one of your middle lanes. and maybe a bigger issue for folks cutting through from highway 4. you might want to get over to the decision 80 highwaybert the interchange. it may be longer but clearer. pinole valley road crash looks like it's off the shoulder. mild slowing down toward the richmond area. >> thank you. >> new this morning, a trip to the park might be to blame for several sick dogs in san francisco. >> pete suratos joins us live from the park in bernal heights with what dog owners say may be to blame. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and sam. yes, these dog owners are telling us that they believe it may be a chemical in a fertilizer right here at the park in bernal heights that
6:33 am
caused their dogs to vomit and even foam at the mouth. they sent an e-mail to their district supervisor asking specific questions. those questions are what fertilizer was used this past week, what is the schedule for applying it, and how can the city stop using it? she's working with parks and rec to get to bottom of this, but parks and rec told the paper they haven't used fertilizer in this park for years. saying to the newspaper they're looking into the matter and welcome any public input on this issue. now, ronan is also welcoming public input and is following up with residents on this, but she said at this time, there are only two reported such incidents at this time. we're live in san francisco. pete suratos for today in the bay. >> thanks for the update there, pete. >> 6:33 right now. another sexual assault investigation at uc berkeley. a student reported she was at a fraternity party saturday night when it happened. at this point, police are releasing few details and no
6:34 am
suspect description. >> the search continues for a missing teenager in fremont. this is kalen glasper. she's 15 years old. she hasn't been seen since last tuesday night near the fremont hub. she's considered at risk. >> international news at 6:34 on your tuesday. a large explosion rattles a city in turkey, and as a result, at least four people are injured. this happen today in the kurdish city of southeastern turkey about 50 miles north of the syrian border. one victim is reported to be in serious condition. the cause of that explosion still unclone. theish news agency said it happened when work was done on an armed police car and it caused a building to collapse. >> russian authorities have announced a string of arrest said in connection to the deadly bombing in st. petersburg. eight extremists have been arrested in the bombing that claims 13 lives and injured dozens of people. the suspects are said to be from former soviet territories in
6:35 am
central asia. a 22-year-old man has been identified at the bomber and there are reports the bomber may have trained with isis. >> 6:. the hunt is on for a masked armed robber in this video. take a look at this video. the robbery happened sunday night. the suspect entered a smoke shop. using a gun, he got away with money and cigarettes. >> two bay area cities dealing with spikes in property crime are expected to hold a crime. one is in menlo park at the neighborhood service center. the other is focuses oin the niles mission neighborhood in fremont. that meeting happens at vallejo mill elementary school. >> the city of santa clara is facing a new lawsuit that may alter how it conducts elections. council members are elected through an at-large election system. minority groups tell the mercury news that blocks minority candidates from becoming elect said. the lawsuit claims for district voting, similar to what happens in larger cities and all
6:36 am
california counties. >> the giants home opener was everything fans could hope for, except for one scary moment. which we'll get to in a second. besides the gorgeous day, the giants defeated arizona 4-1, thanks in large part to an error by the diamondbacks in the first inning. matt moore's solid pitching over eight innings held up for the win. >> back to the scary moment. buster posey was hit in the head by a 94-mile-per-hour fastball. >> that was actually a grounder in the inning that they scored three runs. we'll work on getting that for you, but it was a moment of fear for giantses yesterday as posey ended up getting plunked on the head and sat on the ground momentarily. we saw him fix his helmet and stand back up. we're told he will be re-evaluated today, but he is expected to return to action soon. after the game, manager bruce
6:37 am
bochy pointed out there's added concern whenever posey does return to the field. >> he is a catcher. so now, he's even more at risk if he's catching, takes a foul tip. >> it was aunchly frightening to see. for some fans, yesterday's beaning brought back to mind a game in 2015 when posey took a hard foul off his mask in florida. the foul tip right there into his mask. he was taken out of that game, too. but he returned the next day after passing the concussion protocol. >> that was tough to watch. good thing you didn't see it. 6:37. the nba playoffs are around the corner, the warriors' 14-game winning streak now history. utah jazz played with a purpose down the stretch last night at oracle arena. maybe the wurxs were thinking ahead to their first round playoff series against portland as they came up short. the game is notable because it was the first time in almost six weeks that steph curry and kevin durant were both on the court at the same time.
6:38 am
>> off the court, resting, getting ready for the playoffs. getting ready for the commute. it's so coming because it's the spring break rotation. san jose unified, leads to an earlier morning commute. we see a little slowing. tri-valley and east bay, a gradual build. your usual pattern, but a lighter flow of traffic. here, though, southbound 242 at 680, that crash still blocks one lane. that's why you have the slow segment right there through concord. but we have a nice easy drive for highway 4, taking it all the way over to 680. that's your alternate. the longer way around that can get you there quicker. meanwhile, the other crash, the disabled vehicle, i should say, at pinole valley road is off to the shoulder. no more slowing through pinole. an easier drive building through richmond. and the metering lights are on. and no major surprises. but we have tracked that half hour mark. all the way down to the backup at toll plaza.
6:39 am
back to you. >> thanks very much. 6:38 on your tuesday morning. which means we're already looking forward to the weekend. >> a perfect day to talk about the weekend. and wednesday and thursday, then we'll talk about it on friday. kari hall joining us now with your weekend forecast. >> there's so much going on, sam and laura, this week, and because it's easter weekend, and check it out, stanford stadium, you have carnival, carnapalooza. it starts at 1:00, the game does, but there will be festivities all day, and it will be in the upper 50s, rising to the mid 60s. saturday is going to be perfect for the cardinal. as we are going to also see coachella going on in san francisco. can't make it to coachella, how about gochella? that will be at the san francisco ferry building. you'll be able to experience everything goats. i didn't make this up. on saturday, also, in sausalito, you have the easter egg parade and the egg hunt. it will be 64 degrees and we'll
