they're lucky to be alive. peter gold is a young man who is lucky to be alive. we'll talk to him later on. we want to get to the terrible shooting in san bernadino, california. we're learning about the gunman and the victim. gadi schwartz has the latest. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. family members of the woman who was killed, karen smith, said that she went into teaching after home schooling her own children, and she especially loved working with children who had special needs. >> one charlie three -- >> we got three down. >> reporter: over the police radio, a shooting call from inside a special needs classroom. the first reports of chaos inside north park elementary school. >> can you advise if the victim is a student or an employee? >> it's both. it's both. >> can you say the injuries on the child? >> it's a head injury. >> two victims with severe trauma. >> reporter: cedric anderson killed his wife of two months in front of her own students.

>> it's a husband of the employee. >> reporter: within seven minutes, police storming the school, evacuating 500 terrified students. >> i want to see them and just hug them. >> reporter: while the desperate parents waited for world. >> i want my children. >> reporter: there were 15 students inside the classroom when anderson opened fire. two children who were behind the teacher were hit. 8-year-old jonathan martinez died from his wounds. a 9-year-old who was also shot is in stable condition this morning. other little ones traumatized by the horror they witnessed. >> i saw blood across the room. i ran as fast as i could. >> she lost a shoe. >> i lost a shoe. >> reporter: it's the second active shooter tragedy in san bernardino in a little over a year. 14 people were killed in a terrorist attack that shocked the nation. >> this is an absolutely tragic event. our hearts are broken, as is everyone else.

>> reporter: anderson had checked in with the front office, saying he needed to drop something off for his wife. >> there's no indication that the gun was visible on his arrival at the school. it wasn't until he came in the classroom that he presented the firearm. >> reporter: police say the couple had been estranged. this video from february, anderson talks about how much he loves his wife. >> i love my wife. she is making me really happy. she knows when to ignore me. that makes a happy marriage. >> reporter: one family member painting a different picture of the relationship. saying smith was scared of her husband and went into hiding when they separated but never filed a police report. now, her family is left to mourn her loss. >> i want to say that my mom, she was very special to a lot of people. >> reporter: and once again, the community of san bernardino coming together in the face of violence. apart from teaching at this school, family members say smith also volunteered at her church teaching children. meanwhile, investigators are now looking into the criminal

history of cedric anderson, saying that he had a criminal record of assault and a weapons charge in 2013. but those were later dismissed. matt and savannah, back to you. >> awful. gadi schwartz, thank you. another major story. secretary of state rex tillerson making his way to moscow for what are expected to be tense talks with russian officials. syria, the u.s. air strike there, russia's election meddling, all on the agenda. we'll go live to moscow in a moment. first, peter alexander joins us from the white house. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. new this morning, secretary of state rex tillerson, en route to moscow is delivering a tough message early today warning russia as a choice to make. either align itself with the u.s. and its allies or embrace the syrian regime and iran. as for the recent chemical attack, tillerson is making it clear we cannot let this happen again. facing his first test as america's top diplomat. secretary of state rex tillerson set to arrive in moscow for

high-stakes talks with russia's foreign minister. previewing his message early this morning. >> we do not want the regime's uncontrolled stockpile of chemical weapons to fall into the hands of isis or other terrorist groups who could and want to attack the united states or our allies. >> reporter: just days after a massacre with chemical weapons. tillerson accusing russia of being complicit or incompetent, for failure to deliver on an agreement to destroy chemical weapons. the secretary of state reaffirming the decision to strike syria. >> rededicating ourselves to any and all who commit crimes against the innocents anywhere in the world. >> reporter: two senior military officials telling nbc news, it's not clear the russians were involved in the chemical attack. but u.s. officials are investigating. and at the very least, acknowledge the russians didn't

stop the syrians. the white house not ruling out another strike against syria. but it is stirring up confusion with press secretary sean spicer warning assad's use of barrel bombs could trigger a future u.s. response. >> the sight of people being gassed and blown away by barrel bombs ensures that if we see this action again, we hold open the possibility of future action. >> reporter: but assad has been targeting civilians with barrel bombs that kill indiscriminately for years. spicer clarifying that nothing has changed in the u.s. policy. also looming over today's talks, moscow's meddling in the u.s. election, including possible links between russian operatives and trump associates. tillerson, a former chief executive at exxon mobil, knows the landscape. even awarded the russian order of friendship by vladimir putin in 2013. now, as secretary of state, his harsh words for russia, a striking contrast to president

trump's hesitance to criticize putin publicly. >> it would be great if we could get along with russia. it's not terrible. it's good. >> reporter: as for whether russia was complacent or incompetent when it comes to syria, tillerson this morning says, quote, the distinction doesn't matter much to the dead. also this morning, forceful comments from north korea. this from kim jong-un's regime after the u.s. deployed a navy strike group towards the korean peninsula. the north's foreign ministry warning it would defend against what it calls reckless acts of aggression and hold the u.s. wholly accountable. this white house now navigating foreign policy crises on two fronts. matt and savannah? >> peter alexander at the white house. thank you very much. still the big question, will secretary tillerson get a meeting with vladimir putin himself? nbc's chief global

correspondent bill neely in moscow for us. what are you hearing? >> reporter: good morning, savannah. rex tillerson is coming to moscow with tough words for russia, but with tough talking from vladimir putin here this morning. he has spoken on state television and said the situation in syria today reminds him of iraq in 2003 and the u.s. claims that iraq had weapons of mass destruction. he also says russia will appeal to the united nations to investigate that chemical weapons attack in syria. and more startlingly, he says more chemical weapons attacks are being planned to damascus to discredit president assad. he doesn't say who is planning the attacks or what his sources are. rex tillerson will arrive here with a tough message from the russians -- give up on your support for president assad. he is toxic. of course, the russians have just doubled down on their support for president assad by

saying that they will help bolster his air defenses, and assad is winning the war with russia's help. whether russia will back down on assad is very dubious. one other thing -- there is talk that rex tillerson may meet vladimir putin. the kremlin is saying officially that is simply not on the agenda. savannah? matt? >> bill neely in position to cover them in moscow. thank you very much. here's a story you and your friends will be talking about. fallout is growing from a disturbing incident on a united airlines flight, where a passenger was dragged down the aisle after he refused to give up his seat. the video has exploded on social media. and the airline's reaction is sparking more outrage. tom costello covers aviation. tom, break it down for us. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. the ceo of united airlines has sent a letter to airline employees saying he emphatically stands by them. and he lays much of the blame for this incident on the

passenger who was dragged out of the plane. he says he became uncooperative and disruptive when he was told he would have to leave. and now, as you would expect, the airline is dealing with a public relations nightmare. [ screams ] this morning, the outrage is growing. a 69-year-old man forcibly removed from a united airlines flight sunday in chicago. >> my god. what are you doing? >> reporter: dragged out of his seat, hitting his face. >> oh, my god! look at what you did to him! >> reporter: and pulled down the aisle. >> good work. way to go. >> he was bleeding from his nose and mouth area. he looked like he was unconscious. >> reporter: it started when a flight attendant asked for four volunteers to give up their seats so four crew members can fly to louisville. the airline said it offered up to $1,000 per passenger. when no one agreed, united said it randomly selected four passengers. three agreed, but the unidentified passenger refused, saying he was a doctor

who needed to see patients and got increasingly upset. >> he was yelling at the woman saying, why did you pick me? are you profiling me because i'm chinese? >> reporter: the crew called police who pulled him out of his seat. [ yelling ] >> reporter: after being dragged from the plane, he suddenly returned, appearing disoriented and distraught. >> i have to go home. i have to go home. >> reporter: finally, he was taken away on a stretcher. united airlines ceo oscar munoz took to twitter saying, this is an upsetting event to all of us at united. i apologize for having to reaccommodate these customers. twitter blew up. re-accommodate? you knocked him out and dragged him off a plane, wrote one. if you fly united, that could be you, said another. the cleveland browns joe thomas tweet, "i had to re-accommodate someone once." they have suspended one officer involved, as the incident was not in accordance with our standard operating procedure. >> united can't manage their own people.

and so they drag off these passengers. it's the customers come last. and united comes first. and it's a bad attitude. and that's totally anti-consumer. >> reporter: this morning, united airlines says it is reaching out to that affected customer. now, if you're asking, is it possible the airline can simply bump me off a plane when i have paid for the ticket and i'm sitting there? the answer is, yes. they can do that. it's agreed to when you buy your ticket. they have to compensate you depending on how long you're going to be inconvenienced, up to $1,350. back to you. >> they can. but should they? obviously, united is in crisis mode right now, tom. have you ever seen anything like this? >> reporter: another airline -- a group of airline employees from a competing airline just walked by me a moment ago and they shook their heads. they said, we can't believe united has gotten themselves into another public relations mess. and this is where united is

right now. they've got a lot of people believing that the customer service is lacking. >> all right. i wonder what happens the next time they get on a plane and say we need volunteers. >> every hand goes up. >> or no hands go up again. tom, thank you very much. got new developments on what's becoming one of wall street's biggest scandals. wells fargo forcing two of its top former executives to pay back $75 million, after the bank admitted as many as 2 million accounts were opened for customers without their consent. nbc's gabe gutierrez has the latest on this. gabe, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. a just-released internal report blames wells fargo's management for pressuring employees to meet unrealistic sales goals. the report says the sales culture dates back 15 years. and blames top executives for dragging their feet, until that scandal spiraled out of control.

this morning, wells fargo is doing serious damage control, saying it's forcing two former top executives to return another $75 million in compensation. the so-called clawbacks, the largest in wall street history. >> when i look back, i should have and could have done some things differently. >> reporter: the bank's now ceo, tim sloan, speaking to cnbc, just after a newly-released internal report, pinned most of the blame of the scandal on former chief executive john stumpf and carrie tolstedt. aggressive sales management that created pressure on employees to sell unwanted or unneeded products to customers. last year, wells fargo acknowledged its employees opened up 2 million checking and credit card accounts without authorization to meet sales goals. >> it was very frustrating. these are accounts i never opened. >> reporter: the bank agreed to pay $185 million in fines and

said it had fired 5,300 employees. >> we recognize now that we should have done more sooner. >> reporter: in september, stumpf was grilled by congress. >> your definition of accountable is to push the blame to your low-level employees who don't have the money for a fancy p.r. firm to defend themselves. it's gutless leadership. >> reporter: tolstedt's attorneys released this statement. "we strongly disagree with the report and its attempt to lay blame with ms. tolstedt. a full and will fair examination of the facts will produce a different conclusion." >> we have more work to do in rebuilding trust with all of our stakeholders and making things right with our customers. >> reporter: the second-largest bank in the u.s., trying to revamp its corporate culture. in addition to the fines, wells fargo recently settled a $110 million class-action lawsuit.

the bank remains under investigation by state and federal agencies. >> gabe, thank you very much. we have major developments to tell you about in a sex scandal that's rocked alabama's state capitol. governor robert bentley resigned last night, rather than go through impeachment proceedings. he pled guilty to misdemeanor campaign violations that arose during the investigation of an alleged affair with his former adviser. both have denied a physical relationship. legislators turned up the pressure on bentley by opening impeachment hearings on monday. he will be replaced by kay ivy who was sworn in last night. how do you like carnival rides? >> i like them. >> look at this video. it's frightening video of a carnival ride that left a woman dangling by her ankles. this happened in paris on a ride called, appropriately, adrenaline which is essentially a giant swing. during the ride, the straps holding the woman to her seat failed.

group off of the peninsula. the foreign minister calling that reckless and says it will respond to any mode desired by the u.s. and two people were attacked by sharks on monday while swimming off the post coast of central florida. a woman was bitten on the hand. and in the same area, a 10-year-old girl was bitten on the calf. both are expected to be okay. those are the headlines. matt, over to you. >> thank you very much. now, a "today" exclusive. i'm sitting with peter gold. this is a guy whose story we covered in 2015. he was a medical student at tulane. he tried to help a woman who was being dragged down a new orleans street at gun point. when he tried to help her, the attacker shot peter in the stomach. and attempting to execute him. peter, good morning. good to see you. >> it's an honor to be here. >> we'll show the story in a second. i wanted to come out to you

because when we first met a few months ago, you told me you've not watched the tape of what happened. it was caught on surveillance tape. you didn't want to see it. you said you were now ready to watch it. so, it's okay if we roll it now? >> let's do it. >> all right. let's take people back to november of 2015. the horrific crime was caught on surveillance tape. a woman being dragged down an new orleans street by an armed man, now kno. the video shows a witness, peter gold, a student at tulane university, stopping his car to help the woman. but he turned his gun on gold, wanting money. >> a man yelling, don't. i told you i don't have money. >> reporter: he shot him in the stomach and continued to point his gun at gold as he lay wounded on the ground, pulling the trigger again and again. but the gun jammed, sparing gold's life. the shooter's car and license

plate were caught on camera, which led to his arrest. he was convicted on multiple charges and sentenced to 50 years in prison. peter gold survived, went on to finish his medical degree and is now speaking out for the first til time. >> peter, welcome back. i watched you watching that. you kept shaking your head. >> i remember being right there and looking at this guy in the face. me held his gun to me. and he told me i'm going to kill you. and he shot me in the stomach. i fell to the ground. to be able to watch that video, makes me feel lucky and happy to be able to share this moment with you an spend time with friends and family. >> that gun worked the first time he pulled the trigger. he got you in the stomach. as he continued to pull the trigger with the gun pointed directly at your head, he

jammed. how many tiles have you asked yourself, why did the gun gjam n the next attempts? >> for me, that's the most surreal part. my back was to him at that time. if this video didn't come out, i don't think we would know that happened. i just think it's a question we continue to ask. but i'm lucky and fortunate to be able to come out of that ahi alive. >> how are you? that bullet did a elot of damag. >> i feel great. i have to give credit to my doctors at the university of medical center at tulane in new orleans. they took absolute care of me. and you know, it's an incredible miracle. >> you had an incredible year since then. you got your medical degree. you're finishing up an internship year of orthopedic surgery residency. how far do you go back and think about that day? >> i think of that day every day

of my life. there's not a day that passes by. and there's a lot of people in this country that are affected by gun violence. and a lot of people watching here today that know somebody that's been affected or have been affected themselves. and to be sitting here talking to you and have this voice, i feel i hope i'm not only speaking for myself but speaking for them, as well, too. >> you wanted to spoke and give a statement at the sentencing of the man who shot you. can i read a portion of what you said? i woke up two days later, surrounded by family and a group of best friends. this moment will forever be the happiest moment of my life. i was alive. you hadn't killed me. and with my family by my side, i knew i would bounce back stronger than ever, strong enough to stand face-to-face with you again. why was it important to be able to say that? >> i think it was one of the silver linings in this entire thing. i woke up in the hospital, a group of ten of my friends had flown down to new orleans. my family was there. and it was a special home of

recove recovery, to know that i was going to get through this. >> you mentioned your family. i want to remind viewers, at the time you were robbed, shot and almost killed, you were on the cell phone with your mom. she heard -- your dad, too. they heard this entire thing happening to you on the phone. how was this impacting them? >> it was traumatic. when someone's auction causes more than just the direct action, it's a trripple effect r everyone else. it was traumatic for friends and family. all of us were looking forward and trying to do something positive of what's happened here. >> you were on that sidewalk that night because you stopped to help someone you didn't know, who was in trouble. there is no question you are a hero. would you, today, stop to do the same thing? >> i think it was completely instinctual what i did. i'm driving by and i see a man

dragging a girl across the ground. you saw the video. in nobody's mind is that right. i hope if i'm faced in the same situation, i would act again to held out somebody in need. >> you want to make good out of this. you're starting a foundation called strong city. you want to help young people who fall through the cracks. why is it important to create a cause surrounding this? >> one of the first things i started talking about when i woke up in the hospital, i'm thinking about it again here, watching this video, is what happened in somebody's life that they were able to create such violence with such ease, without even thinking about it? what happened in his community? what happened at school? what happened with his family? and what strong city aims to do is through fund-raising at mystrongcity.org we want to support community-based organizations who are doing an amazing job at empowering underserved youth. and focusing on kids as the

her estranged husband walked into her classroom. inside her special needs classroom, the first police on site dwibing the horror unfolding. >> can you describe if the victim is a student or employee? >> it's both. >> reporter: a classroom full of students witnessing this man, cedric anderson, opening fire on his estranged wife, karen smith. killing her, before taking his own life. two students were hit by the gunfire. one of the children survived. the other, 8-year-old jonathan martinez, died despite efforts to save him. >> he was taken to lomo university medical center, via helicopter, almost immediately. as soon as we could get resources there. tragically, he has passed away. >> reporter: police stormed the school, evacuating hundreds of students immediately after the shooting. panicked parents desperate to be reunited with their children. >> it's unimaginable. you never think you have to go through this with your kids and the fear of not knowing.

>> reporter: students describing the terror. >> i saw blood across the room. >> reporter: investigators say the shooter and the teacher were married in january. but had recently separated. just last month, cedric anderson professing his love for his wife, karen, on social media. >> i love my wife. boy, she's making me really happy. she knows when to ignore me. >> reporter: but one family member told nbc news that smith was terrified of her husband. saying he often carried a gun. and smith had gone into hiding to get away from him. now, the san bernadino community, still on-edge, after the 2015 terrorist attack is facing another act of violence that this time has victimized innocent children. investigators are now looking into anderson's criminal past. he was charged with assault and battery and brandishing a weapon in 2013. but those charges were dismissed. matt, back to you. >> thank you very much. secretary of state rex tillerson traveling to moscow

this morning after an urgent meeting with u.s. allies in italy. his mission comes at a time of rising tensions over syria and other subjects. nbc's chief global correspondent bill neely is in moscow for us this morning. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. rex tillerson is coming here with pretty tough word from russia. tough talking from vladimir putin here this morning. he has said that the situation in syria reminds him of iraq in 2003. and u.s. claims that iraq had weapons of mass destruction. he says russia is appealing to the u.n. to investigate that chemical weapons attack in syria. and most startlingly of all, he says russia has been told that more chemical weapons attacks are being planned south of damascus to discredit president assad. he doesn't say who is planning them or what his sources are. tough talk from him. rex tillerson will come here and

"today" national correspondent craig melvin, found a church in chicago bringing people together in ways you wouldn't expect. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. they told me it was a church that held its services in a pub. so, naturally, i figured i should probably check it out. brewing its own beer, that caught our attention. but it's part of a brand-new church called gilliad, breaking

down boundaries, hoping to help others find its way to church. what if worship was about drinking beer? growing food and sharing it with your neighbors. and your story about a friend is a sign of god's work. ♪ this is the day >> reporter: this is a soul-searching community coming together with music, food and drink to worship god in a new way. vince and rebecca are ministers who founded the gilliad church. >> i love the idea of creating community. and what it means to live together. in a loving way. >> reporter: the christian services include traditions like scripture and communion. but at its heart, giliad is about stories. with a belief that what happens to us every day is testament to god's work. why is the story telling such a

central component? >> to help people see god in their own story, especially if the story has been devalued in some way. your story is so holy we want to have it in worship to people can hear it and learn from it. >> reporter: congregants are asked to talk about what happened to them, anything. >> i am able to have this intimate, honest, weird conversation with a complete stranger. and isn't that what joy is all about? >> reporter: finding joy and meaning as giliad breaks down walls rather than building them. it is a church with no permanent home. they hold services in borrowed spaces. even some with taps. you're having church at the pub? >> right. right. >> and that's our preference. one thing because people -- it's a curious thing for people. what's going on in there?

we're having puchurch at a bar. lots of churches have events at bars. >> i've never been to one. >> you should get in on it. so, some of it is this whole thing about people who have been told they don't belong. buildings that look like that don't belong to you, they belong to your grandparents. coming into a building that doesn't look like a church is more welcoming. >> reporter: taking welcoming one step further, this group even brews its own beer. they call it the balm of giliad. this sounds like a nice supper club. >> it is. >> reporter: what makes it a church? >> you get together with the intention of worshiping god. >> reporter: new parishioner, elizabeth, says she was raised in a lutheran church. she has been looking for a new church for nine years. >> the first service, i didn't know what to expect. i told a story.

i di did it. i told a story of when i was not a great person. >> reporter: just that one time. >> just that one time. it was amazing. everyone was so warm and accepting. there were all kinds of people there. people who identified as all kinds of things. and it was diverse, too. that's important to me. >> reporter: elizabeth's own story is exactly who giliad is trying to reach, those who lost their faith and are hoping to find their way back. do you consider this worship? >> yeah. definitely. for me, if there's god in there, and we're praying, i think that's worship. i think that's worship. >> reporter: maybe not worship as we've known it so far. >> it doesn't have to look like everything we've already done. we can do new things. you know? you hang out. you hear some stories. you drink. you eat good food. and then, you worship god. like -- that's pretty cool.

used hot glue to put it on a wreath. now, she is wrapping feather boas. >> where do you get the wreath thing? >> at a craft store. when she is done, she will glue and go on to the next one. >> looking cute for the holidays. hi, mia. >> mia is going to dropcolors y use. she's going to drop them in here. >> the whole thing? >> not quite the whole thing. but you want a lot. >> okay. >> and then, let's dump this color? >> it's water. and now, grab one of the eggs. you want to get another color, huh? you grab an egg and dump it in there. just a little bit. you'll get the color on. >> do you dunk it like that? >> keep it in your hands.

>> they stir it. >> going to add a hard boiled egg in there. and the trick to keeping them from cracking is you add half a teaspoon of salt in your boiling water. once they put these in. >> we only have a few seconds left. >> and make sure it's all the way covered. you can use your rubber glove. leave them in there for ten minutes. and then, when we pull them out, they look like this. >> adorable. >> pastel and pretty. >> a few seconds. twinki twinkies, my favorite. what are we making? >> we're making a peep race. he is adding marshmallow wheels. and putting the peep in as the driver. let's make him face front. >> that's a good idea. >> there you go. and we'll add a little bit of a pretzel, the steering wheel.

good designer. >> you've taken rice krispies. >> i crushed them. i have crushed the crispies. you coat the chicken in the krispies like that. and shove them into hot oil. >> how long does that take? >> until the chicken is tooked. nobody likes raw chicken. >> what do we have for a sauce? >> butter milk. i'm going to add stilten. >> it has a strong flavor. >> it will wake you up. >> that's sriracha. a thai, spicy sauce. all you need to do is blend that up. takes a few minutes. and once that is done, it is gorgeous in this coral color. and you can dunk the chicken. you can apply it to your face. >> take it with you to the next recipe. these are cool potatoes.

>> hedgehog hoe dpotatoes. they're hassleback potatoes. i take a regular potato. i will slice that between two wooden spoons. you can slice down. and you get gorgeous slices. you can fill them with wonderful things. >> do they go in the oven? >> first, butter. i'm 80% butter. most people are 80% water. 5% garlic. and a little worcestershire sauce, as well. you infuse that. and drench the potatoes with your garlicy butter. they go in the oven for two hours. >> what do you think? >> i'm 80% butter now, too. >> these chicken fingers are fantastic. >> i love the crunch. >> all about the crunch. >> this is what they look like.
