the u.s. would strike with conventional weapons if they become kochb vinced north korea is about to test a nuclear weapon. a possible nuclear test coming as early as this weekend, coinciding with the anniversary of the nation's founder 105th birthday, the grandfather of current leader kim jong-un. janice, what's the latest on this increasingly tense situation? >> good morning, yasmin. north korea blaming the united states for heightened tension on the korean peninsula with the dispatch of aircraft carrier strike group as well as threats of a pre 'em tuf u.s. strike if the u.s. believes north korea is preparing a sixth nuclear test. the speculation has been mounting for weeks and was rekindled again with commercial satellite imagery showing increased activity at the site where north korea has carried out the past five tests, seeing increased activity at the north

portal as well as appearance of equipment and personnel. the vice foreign minister of north korea today making comments in an interview that north korea stands ready for any mode of war desired by the united states, that it will not sit by with its arms crossed if the u.s. launching a preemptive strike and it will wait for word from its supreme headquarters to carry out a nuclear test which it is prepared to do at any time. so they're certainly adding fuel to the fire. here in south korea, also being seen as a sign that perhaps north korea wants to talk, the fact that these comments were coming through the diplomatic channel of the foreign ministry and as well-being made in an interview and not in a statement being read out on television from the regime's state-run news agency. certainly a lot of speculation and anxiety heading into the key anniversary weekend in pyongyang. >> we'll have to see what happens this weekend. thank you.

adding to the international tension, what's happening in afghanistan the u.s. military dropped the largest non-nuclear bomb used in combat, nicknamed the mgter of all bombs. its use is unprecedented. the target, isis fighters and tunnels in afghanistan. this morning afghan officials say the bomb killed at least 36 isis fighters and no civilians were hurt. nbc chief foreign correspondent richard engel has more. >> reporter: the u.s. military pulled out the big guns in the fight against isis, a 21,000-pound bomb, the largest non-nuclear weapon the united states has ever used. its only known use before, this 2003 test. the massive ordnance air blast is better known by its mick name, the mother of all bombs. so big it's stored in the cargo hold and dropped out of the back of a plane. a u.s. aircraft dropped one of these monster bombs on an isis tunnel complex in eastern

afghanistan. president trump suggested he didn't personally authorize the strike, left that to his commanders. >> we have given them total authorization. this was another very successful mission. >> reporter: the toll of the bomb both physical and psychological. >> the shock value of this weapon is simply unbelievable. it feels like an earthquake 15 miles away. it will collapse under ground, subterranean caverns with the isis fighters in them. >> reporter: but the 15-year war in afghanistan, the longest in u.s. history has proven having the mightiest weapons doesn't guarantee victory. the u.s. still has more than 8,000 troops in afghanistan, extremist groups including isis remain strong. just this weekend an american soldier was killed there. >> military experts tell richard engel the bombing was also about sending a message to frighten isis and perhaps even north korea. breaking overnight, the las vegas strip was shut down for an hour when a second alarm fire

this morning we're hearing from his attorney and his daughter. nbc's tom costello has the detai details. >> reporter: dr. david dao dragged from the united flight on sunday is out of the hospital. >> my dad is healing right now. >> reporter: his daughter says his injuries are severe. >> we were horrified and shocked and sickened to learn what happened to him and to see what happened to him. >> reporter: his attorney said dr. dao suffered a concussion, broken nose, sinus injuries that require reconstructive surgery and lost two teeth in the incident. >> i have to go home. >> reporter: he has no memory of running back on board the plane bloodied and distraught after being dragged off. attorneys say they will sue united and the city. >> he is a 69-year-old man. is that really the way we want to treat the aged? >> reporter: united released a new statement reiterating apology saying this horrible situation has provided a harsh learning experience from which we will take immediate concrete action.
