ron, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning to you. just an awful story out of cleveland. within the last hour police updated the media saying the manhunt continues for steven stephens. he's accused of gunning down a 74-year-old grandfather walking along easter sunday by himself. we should warn you, some of this video is graphic and upsetting. this morning, the city of cleveland is on high alert. police and the fbi scrambling to find this man, suspected of posting video on facebook that shows an execution in broad daylight and claiming to be responsible for multiple other murde murders. >> i'm going to kill this guy. >> reporter: the video shows the suspect, identified by police, as steve stephens, getting out of his car and telling his victim he's going to die because of a woman. >> yeah. she's the reason why this is about to happen to you. >> reporter: stephens raises a handgun at the man and fires a

single shot. shortly before the murder, stephens described the motivation on his facebook page, which is now no longer active. >> driving me crazy. >> i lost everything. i lost everything i had, man. >> reporter: claiming a woman he was dating is responsible for making him snap, blaming her for his alleged crimes. >> the people i'm going to kill today, it's easter sunday, it's not my first. >> reporter: but the suspect makes chilling claims that he's killed others, yet his claims have yet to be verified. >> what happened today is senseless. and if steve has an issue, he needs to talk to some folks to get that resolved. >> reporter: law enforcement officials say they have not located any additional shooting scenes or bodies and are asking stephens to reach out to family and local clergy for help. >> we're asking himself to turn himself in. we brought everything to bear on this, with our state and local partners. we want him to turn himself in. if that doesn't happen, we'll

look until we find him. >> reporter: all right. now take a look at the vehicle police are looking for. they believe mr. stephen is driving this white four-door ford fusion with temporary ohio plates. the manhunt has spread from ohio to neighboring states as well. matt, savannah. >> i hope they find this guy soon. thank you very much. the white house sending a stern new warning to north korea after an overnight visit to dmz mike pence declared the end of so-called strategic patience. he also reiterated all options are on the table when it comes to dealing with north korean regime. we have full coverage. let's go to janis mackey frayer, she's in seoul this morning. janis, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. vice president mike pence putting the north korean regime on notice today. the vice president visiting north korea at a time of escalating tension, worrying over north korea's growing arsenal and the specter of another provocative test.

on his second day in south korea, vice president mike pence warning north korea that the era of strategic patience is over. >> all options are on the table. just in the past two weeks, the world witnessed the strength and resolve of our new president, in actions taken in syria and afghanistan. north korea would do well not to test his resolve. >> reporter: during a surprise visit to the demilitarized zone, dividing the two koreas, the vice president could look directly at north korea. north korean soldiers staring back. the dmz, the legacy of a war mr. pence's father fought in 64 years ago. in a message on twitter, pence said the visit was meaningful. while the trip to south korea was planned long ago, it took on added significance over the weekend, following a failed missile test by the rogue nation. >> we want to see north korea abandon its reckless path of the

development of nuclear weapons and also it's continual use and testing of ballistic missiles is unacceptable. >> reporter: amid the specter of a sixth nuclear test, north korea had a massive military parade on saturday. a showcase of missiles, mobile launchers and what experts believe was the prototype for a new intercontinental ballistic missile designed to potentially reach the united states. kim jong-un watching it all go by. but just hours after flaunting its might, the regime exposed its weakness, with a failed test of a medium-range missile, that blew up just seconds after launch. a deep embarrassment for kim jong-un, but not good for the u.s. or the region, either. >> this is a regime that's intent on continuing to develop its missile and nuclear program. and one failure isn't going to stop that program. >> reporter: with tensions escalating, the american position hardening, and a naval

strike group heading towards the peninsula, pressure is mounting. one small mistake could trigger one very big disaster. the vice president has given u.s. security assurances to south korea, saying the u.s. commitment is iron-clad. he wants to push ahead with deployment of anti-missile defense system known as thaad that's controversial here but nonetheless seen as necessary to counter the threat. matt and savannah, back to you. >> thank you so much. nbc news analyst jeremy bash, former chief of staff of the defense department and the cia. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. good morning, matt. >> this explodes five seconds after launch. it'sette -- it's either an embarrassing failure or a sign that the north is devoted towards getting a nuclear weapon. >> we should take cold comfort for this failure because every failure causes them to go into overdrive. they perfect their missile program. they're trying to do two things. they're trying to get the element of surprise. they're putting their missiles

on trucks, making them mobile, driving them around the country. and they are also perfecting their solid fuel so they can launch in a hurry about that long lead time. they want to do this, matt and savannah, anywhere, anytime. >> let's go back. the u.s. intelligence suspected they would test something much more severe, the sixth test of the nuclear device. they didn't. they test a mid-range missile instead. they blinked. >> well, maybe they did. they could have tested a nuclear weapon, which they've done five times before, going all the way back to 2006. they could have flight tested their intercontinental ballistic missile. that would have range to the united states. >> much more provocative. >> much more provocative. but the missile capability, could hit japan, or south korea. that's what we worry about, them attacking our allies. we have 30,000 troops on the peninsula. >> given this five-second failure, there's a speculation that perhaps the u.s. may have been involved somehow,

sabotaging it, presumably, in some technical means like hacking. is that something in our capability? >> i don't know. i don't know if i could say. but they are going to perfect this missile capability and put the program into overdrive and threaten their neighbors in the region. >> real quickly. when you hear words from our vice president and general mcmaster that the era of strategic patience is over, and mcmaster saying all options are viable and being refined. do you like the talk when it comes to kim jong-un? >> i like the silent treatment. i'm more concerned about the tweets on april 11th, 12th, 13th, saying we're going to take care of this problem ourselves. that signals pre-emptive military action. we're not ready for that yet. >> general mcmaster seemed to back off of that. >> he has backed off. but the north koreans will look most clearly to our president. >> jeremy bash, thank you. appreciate it. president trump is hitting back at protesters who used weekend rallies to demand he release his taxes.

nbc white house correspondent kristen welker has more on that story. kristen, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. president trump is looking to focus on the economy and jobs this week. but he is coming under fire with tax day and no indication he's planning to release his. mr. trump took to twitter to respond to his critics, while spending the easter weekend with his family at his resort in west palm beach. president trump saying largely out of sight this weekend. his motorcade captured rolling to his family's palm beach episcopal church for easter service. but in an easter morning tweet storm, he addressed everything from north korea to his taxes, wishing his 28 million followers a happy holiday. and also defending his recent shift over china. while president trump once vowed to label the country a currency manipulator -- >> they are grand masters of currency manipulation. >> reporter: the president now reversing that opinion, tweeting, why would i call china a currency manipulator when they

are working with us on the north korean problem. we'll see what happens. it wasn't just foreign policy. mr. trump responding to the thousands who protested all across the country over the weekend demanding that the president release his tax returns. emotions boiling over, leading to arrests in california. for the most part, demonstrators were peaceful but determined to get their message out, including some who live near his west palm beach resort. >> every other president has shown their tax returns. and i think there's something in there he wants to hide. >> reporter: the president has said he won't release his returns because he's under audit, lashing out. i did what was an almost impossible thing to do for a republican, easily won the electoral college. now tax returns are brought up again. even demanding, someone should look for who paid for the organized rallies yesterday. the election is over. but with tax day approaching, there's no sign these protesters are planning to let up. as for mr. trump's assertion the protesters were paid, there's no evidence of that.

meanwhile today, the president and first lady are preparing for the annual easter egg roll at the white house. a tradition since the 1870s. the white house has pushed back against criticism they're unprepared for the roll this year. officials here saying they are expecting the event to run smoothly. matt. >> all right, kristen. thank you very much. a little bit of a programming note. tomorrow on "today," senator elizabeth warren, who has been one of the president's most vocal critics, will join us for an exclusive live interview. in the wake of his contentious confirmation, justice kneel gorsuch takes the bench today. pete williams is here. good morning. >> reporter: neil gorsuch gets to the court in time for two weeks of argument in the current term. that includes one of the most important cases that might not be heard. with the controversy over his confirmation over, justice gorsuch will take his spot at the end of the supreme court bench restoring the court's generally conservative 5-4 majority.

that may make a difference in a case involving religion and government, a claim that missouri discriminated a -- against a lutheran church. justice gorsuch may play a role in the cases chosen to be heard next term. the newly-elected governor says the state will no longer turn down requests for money from churches. so that big indication might go away. matt, savannah. >> we shall see. pete williams, we know you will be watching it. thank you. security is tight for today's running of the boston marathon. let's look at a live picture from along the route right now. about 30,000 runners and wheelchair competitors will be taking part in today's race. the 26.2-mile course runs from the suburb of hopkinton to boylston street in boston. many of the best runners in the world will take part in an elite event. it's the fourth anniversary of

the tragic bombing near the finish line, killing three people and injuring more than 260 others. this year, police are using drones as an added measure of security. united airlines is changing a company policy. it will no longer allow crew members to displace customers that are already onboard an airplane. that policy shift coming, of course, after the passenger was dragged from a fully-booked flight in chicago because he refused to give up his seat to make room for crew members. the company outlined its policy in an e-mail on friday. and from now on, crew members have to book their seats at least 60 minutes prior to departure. previously, they were allowed to book until it was time to take off. here's something you don't see every day. a skydiving easter bunny made quite the entrance sunday when he dropped in for an easter egg hunt in south texas. the tandem came in a little hot, crash landed. took out a third person on the ground. thankfully no one was okay.

can you stop using the bullhorn? ==topvo== berkeley police expect to make more arrests .. in the wake of good morning to you. 7:26. berkeley police expect to make hoar arrests in the wake of these violent weekend clashes. police arrested 20 people in saturday in connection with a protest that got out of hand. it started at martin luther king jr. civic center park. pro and anti-trump protesters were involved and one viral video shows a president trump supporter punching a female counterprotester right in the face. police say they will arrest more people likely when investigators finish reviewing the video and social media evidence. we want to take a look at your weather forecast because this is a soggy one. >> really wet out there. especially take a look at this view in san francisco. the water drops on the camera lens.

baby. >> how are you feeling otherwise? >> i'm feeling great. i don't think i've ever been this happy. >> that's saying something because you are one of the most joyful people i know. but now you have haley joy. >> so much to talk about. >> brace yourself. brace yourself. let's get a check at some of the headlines. overnight vice president mike pence made an unannounced visit to the dmz one day after a failed north korean missile test. stressing the era of patience is over. pence called on that regime to abandon attempts to develop nuclear weapons. he also said all options are on the table to bring stability to the korean peninsula. a manhunt is under way for a murder suspect in cleveland. police say 37-year-old steve stevens shot and killed a 74-year-old man robert godwin sr. and then posted that video on facebook. he claims to have killed more than a dozen other people, but

investigators say they have yet to find any other victims. an emotional day for boston celtics point guard isaiah thomas. he is seen wiping away tears before a game before the chicago bulls. playing one day after his sister, chyna, was killed in a one-car crash in washington state. >> he's an amazing, amazing player and amazing person and days won't get easier for him, but he somehow plays like that. >> game two is tomorrow night. coach stevens says it will be up to thomas to decide whether he wants to play or whether he wants to be with his family. >> can't even imagine how difficult that was for him. >> and how to pull yourself together and be there for the team with so much on his heart. well, also this morning we have new developments to tell you about in a notorious crime. the 1975 murder of martha moxley. morgan ratford is here with the latest on this. >> good morning, matt, savannah.

anyone who has followed this case knows it had 40 years of plot twists and turns and today a new one. attorneys for michael skakel say a possible new piece of evidence could blow this case wide open. this morning, attorneys for michael skakel, the nephew of robert f. kennedy and his widow, ethel, say there could be a new murder weapon in the 1975 killing of martha moxley and they're trying to track it down. >> this finding is huge. it could single handedly exculpate michael skakel. >> reporter: the latest twist in this decade's old drama focuses on a golf club handle allegedly turned over to police in 199 9. though, according to skakel's attorney, a report was never filed. >> if it's a golf club handle that fits the other pieces of the golf club that's in evidence and it's not the golf club handle the state suspected, then they had the case wrong for decades, haven't they? >> reporter: 15-year-old martha moxley was found brutally beaten

to death with a golf club in 1975. skakel and moxley were neighbors in wealthy greenwich, connecticut. the piece of evidence was found in the home where skakel and friends were watching television on the night moxley was killed. it could disprove prosecutors' claims that it belonged to the skakel family. now in court documents, skakel's attorneys argue they need to interview three witnesses, they think, could shed new details on what happened. among them barbara w. who the defense says found the golf club on the property of skakel's alibi with her peter who managed the property and died last month. the defense said they immediately went to the greenwich police department expressing a concern that their finding may be related to the moxley murder case, providing evidence to the duty officer, along with detailed explanations. >> the question is not who testifies but whether or not

this physical evidence would change anything if we learned more about it. >> this is truly martha's day. >> reporter: skakel was convicted in 2002 of murdering moxley. >> i am going to set a bond of $1,200,000. >> reporter: he has been free on bond since 2013 when his conviction was overturned after he argued his lawyer didn't adequately defend him in the original case. the connecticut supreme court reinstated his conviction late last year. a few months earlier, matt spoke to robert kennedy jr. about skakel. >> i strongly believe that he's innocent. that belief should not persuade xwkd that he is innocent. people should be persuaded by the facts and that's been one of the pitfalls of this epic story from the beginning. >> reporter: skakel has always maintained his innocence. >> what i can do is what i do every day is pray to god and to

eggs that they get at the end of the roll. kind of nifty. all right. let's show you what we have weather wise for you starting off with today. unsettled weather out west. we're looking for showers and some snow showers in the upper elevations making their way through the pacific northwest. nothing quite as bad as it's been. but another system behind that one that is going to deliver more rain on wednesday. rest of the country, as you can see, rainfall amounts anywhere from one inch to upwards of three to five inches in the pacific northwest and in the cascades. some stronger storms in the mid-mississippi river valley today. rip currents along the eastern shore of florida. cooling off in the northeast. good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. we have cloudy skies and some light rain. in san francisco, the showers continue. we'll see a high of 62 degrees. more off and on rain tomorrow as well as wednesday. then we'll get clearing and dry weather. also warming up as well as we head into the weekend, inland

hunting frg a 37-year-old murder suspect who opened fire on a 71-year-old grandfather of 14 yesterday on easter sunday. happened at 2:00 yesterday. the victim is 74-year-old robert godwin. he was walking down the sidewalk when steve stephens, a 37-year-old man got out of his vehicle, walked over to mr. godwin and told the man to repeat the name of a woman and then told the man that the woman was the reason that the elderly gentleman was about to lose his life. he opened fire striking mr. godwin in the head. got back in his car and posting the video of the murder on facebook. neighbors states, ohio, pennsylvania, indiana all told to look for this vehicle. this is a 2016 ford fusion white in color with temporary plates. the manhunt continues this morning.

is browned butter. >> browned butter differs from burned butter how sno browned butter is a step before burnt butter. as it melts down, the milk solids begin to caramelize and brown. they're nutty and fragrant. that adds a nice depth to the butter. >> that takes about how long? >> about five minutes. we have the browned butter here. this is going to go into our doughnuts, obviously. but start by making the dry ingredients. this is flour. i'm going to have you add the spices and the leavening and salt. we have cinnamon and nutmeg and baking powder and sugar. >> that's sugar. >> we're not messing around. give that a whisk. i'll start to bring together the wet ingredients. our brown butter here. >> are these mashed bananas. >> we're going to take your
