a campaign in the white house in 2020. you're poo-pooing, right, senator? >> i'm poo-pooing. >> we'll talk to senator warren in a little bit. let's start with the nationwide manhunt for the so-called facebook killer. we have the latest on the search. and we start with jacob rascon in cleveland. >> reporter: good morning. more than 400 tips have poured in from across the country. there's been sightings as far away as philadelphia. but so far, no credible leads as police offer a substantial reward for help. and a close friend pleads for him to surrender. this morning, investigators are chasing hundreds of leads. the search for steve stephens now a nationwide manhunt after police say he murdered 74-year-old robert godwin at random in broad daylight and posted video of the crime to facebook. >> i lost everything. i lost everything i had, man. >> reporter: horrified neighbors

phone. temporary tags on his car. how do you find somebody like this? >> one of the things you said is the key, too. temporary tags. those can be torn off. police will be looking for stolen license tags, stolen vehicles. today, there are technological ways, from tracing credit cards and bank accounts to automobiles and cell phones. and this technology is brought to bear as strong as they can with the fbi, atf, marshals service, local police. there's hundreds of officers looking for this man, and rightfully so. he did a cold-blooded killing. he's fully capable of doing this again. he presents a threat not only to citizens or the dozen people that he alleges that he killed, but any police officer that might stop him. >> your profile, a former profiler, let's talk about the penalty we are dealing with.

he walks up to a total stranger and brings that person into his extremely troubled world in a violent way. telling that person what he's about to do. he's narcissistic, sadistic. how does that change the hunt for him? >> part of it is, matt, he didn't just snap. we hear people say, yeah, he just snapped. it doesn't work like that. there's been a buildup with him. we know he has a history, even as a child, we're told that he tortured animals. we're told that he's been evicted from two different apartments. he has significant gambling losses, that his girlfriend broke up with him. all these add a little bit of weight to this. he could have chosen to act out any other way. but as far as law enforcement is concerned, they saw the video. they know the guy's a danger. what they have to do is put this iron circle, unfortunately, around a three-state or four-state area and start drawing that in. one more time, matt, just like

is here. this morning, critics blasting president trump, for calling the president of turkey, after a vote expanded his powers. the move taking a different tone than the state department, which urged turkey, a key ally in the fight against isis, to respect the basic rights of its citizens and noted the electional irregularities. the president under fire again to refusing to release his taxes. the white house suggesting he may never. >> you talk about under audit. the president is under audit. is it time to say once and for all the president is never going to release the tax returns? >> we have to get back to you on that. i think that he is -- he is still under audit. the statement still stands. >> reporter: but the president's decision sparking a fierce backlash, with protests all across the country over the weekend. and on monday, some of mr. trump's fellow republicans forced to defend him at town halls, including arkansas senator tom cotton. >> now he says the election has happened and he doesn't need to release his tax returns.

[ boos ] >> reporter: taxes just one of the president's controversial decisions that has republicans worried there could be a ripple effect. today, all eyes are on the special election in georgia, for the seat vacated by health and human services secretary tom price. in a crowded field of 18 candidates, 30-year-old democrat jon ossoff is leading the pack. the documentary filmmaker and former congressional aide potentially the democrats' first, best chance to win a seat long held by republicans. >> the eyes of the nation are on us. >> reporter: president trump raising the stakes. recording this robocall against ossoff. >> liberal democrats from outside of georgia are spending millions and millions of dollars trying to take your republican congressional seat away from you. don't let them do it. >> reporter: ossoff has raked in a staggering $8.3 million, much of it from out-of-state donations, unprecedented for a previously unknown candidate. nbc's kasie hunt caught up with

democratic senator libya warren is with us now exclusively. she has positioned herself as a leading voice of the trump opposition. and she's written a new book called "this fight is our fight." good morning. >> good morning. >> why don't we start with the congressional race in georgia, in the sixth district. that seat has been long held by republicans. if jon ossoff is manage to win there, senator, is it more than just a one-off? do you see it as democrats having a path back from a battered state? >> i think that the real energy right now is on the democratic side. and the independent side. it's people who say, i want to make my voice heard. i wrote this book about the long arc, about how america once invested in the middle class, strengthened the middle class, and how trickle-down economics came along and really took the legs out. but where the bookends, it ends on the note of how we get engaged. and i think that's what is going on in georgia. democracy is not something that

happens once every four years or once every two years if you pay close attention. democracy is what's happening out there all the time now. >> let's talk about tax day. the president coming under fire for not releasing his tax returns. his logic is straightforward. this wasn't an issue in the campaign. i won the campaign. issue over. >> no, the issue is not over. he promised in the campaign he would reveal his taxes. in fact, how many clips have you got here? he would reveal them after this. after that. he would put it off. >> do you think he ever will? >> i don't know. i'll tell you this -- i think people are going to keep demanding it. but they're going to keep demanding it and making their voices heard on this. why is it the case that people at the very top should get a bunch of tax breaks, should be able to hide their business dealings when everyone else pays? everyone makes the road and bridges work, makes the schools

work. let's see what donald trump is up to. >> this book is all about taking the fight to donald trump. >> you bet. >> yes, but in recent days, he's actually done a 180 on a host of issues. i can name them. on putin, on china's currency policy. it goes on. do you look at that as a sign of improvement? are you willing to give him credit for that? >> actually, let me frame this slightly differently. kind of the way i talk about this in the book. the real question here, is who does government work for? government once worked for hard-working families. government once worked for the middle class. what's happened since about the 1980s forward, is the handful of billionaires and bankers and folks -- ceos of giant corporations, seized our government and have made it, inch by inch, work better and better for those at the top and less an less for everyone else. >> that's been your fight

throughout your career. you've been reaching out to the middle guy, the middle class, the person who doesn't seem to catch a break. and president trump beat you at your own game and other democrats in this last election. >> here's what donald trump did, he figured out people are angry. and they're right to be angry. they're angry because their kids can't get an education without getting crushed by student loan debt. they're angry because kids don't graduate into good jobs. they're angry because people can't retire with dignity. the difference is what trump said is it's somebody else. he attacked other groups. and what he's now done is he's put a bunch of billionaires and bankers in charge who are making every part of that worse. >> in the past, you said all of this about donald trump, dangerous, divisive, he embraced bigotry, hook, line and sinker.

you go on and on. in november you said, however, if we can find common ground, count me in, if donald trump can enact measures that will be helpful. 89 days in, senator, which elizabeth warren is sitting in front of me? the one that thinks all of those things about donald trump? or the one who wants to work with me? >> it's both because this is not about donald trump. this is about the people of america. i will fight for them. donald trump said during the campaign that he was willing break up the big banks, separate investment banking from ordinary checking accounts/savings account banking. make the system safer. he said he was. i have a bill on that. a bill with maria cantwell, john mccain, and angus king. so my view is, come on, donald trump, you want to do that, let's do the bill. your economic adviser has said it would be a good idea. i'm there to do it because donald trump, in many ways, is not the core issue. the core issue is how we get this government to work for the

for us this morning. he was getting wet. >> we have seen the rain off and on. take a look at this view over san francisco. you see those low clouds and we see showers moving through. we have seen this all around the bay area this morning. even though we're not seeing much activity on the radar, the bulk of the rain has been over the south county where the steady rain continues, and that will create a very slippery drive. then we'll get some cloudy skies throughout the day. a few peeks of sun and rain into the lunchtime hour, especially for areas south of san francisco. the south bay may also have a very slight chance of a thunderstorm during the evening commute. we'll acontinue to moner that. here is vianey. >> as the rain begins to move in again, we have seen some slick roads. we're starting to see delays and a couple accidents. there's a crash northbound 101 at trimble road. a vehicle may be blocking the right-hand shoulder. chp is on the way to clear it out. you can see all of that backup affecting the early morning

and then posted on facebook. this morning, police are expanding that manhunt nationwide. they're looking for the killer, 37-year-old steve stephens. and a $50,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to arrest. atlanta's interstate problems just got even worse. this morning, parts of busy i-20 are closed after a section of that road buckled, while crews work to seal off an abandoned gas pipe. a car and motorcycle were passing by. they went airborne. the commuters are still dealing with a traffic nightmare last month, when a fire was allegedly set underneath i-25. a number of attendees at coachella noticed that their phones were missing. they wisely activated that find my phone app and it led them to this man. he was detained by security until police arrived. inside his backpack, officers found more than 100 phones. the 36-year-old was charged with grand theft and released on bond.

you know at coachella, your phone can be just left out there. >> and someone will come along and snatch it up. in the meantime, today marks a grim anniversary for the family of missy bevers. the fitness instructor was abducted a year ago. while security cameras appear to capture images of her killer, an arrest has never been made. nbc's kerry sanders has the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the mother of three was murdered one year ago today in the church just behind me. this morning, police in this small town south of dallas say they are still getting tips one year later. and the chief detective on this case has one job -- solve this murder. this morning, one year after fitness instructor missy bevers was found murdered, police say they are keeping track of a person of interest. but still, no one is under arrest. security video from the church where missy's body was found,

shows the murderer in what looks like tactical gear. it hides a lot. are you still perplexed if that's a man or woman in that video? >> i am. it's frustrating to say that. but among our investigators there's a split opinion. >> reporter: even the fbi, using high-tech forensics not able to reach a definitive conclusion. police can't even say if the killer was after missy. >> some think she was targeted. some don't. >> reporter: authorities once focused on brandon bevers, when they learned that missy was having an affair with another man when she was killed. but today, police say they have no reason to believe that bevers had anything to do with his wife's death. on this emotional one-year anniversary, missy's family is not talking on camera. but brandon talked right after. >> look at the video. the person has a very distinct walk that should be apparent to somebody. >> reporter: police say they've

gone over the security tape frame-by-frame, again and again. some even see it in their dreams. >> it's almost as if the video haunts you when you want to know so bad who is in that video but you don't. >> reporter: the day missy was murdered, the popular camp gladiator fitness instructor was alone in the church around 4:00 a.m., setting up for a workout class. she posted online, if it's raining, we're still training. >> tonight's workout is in honor of missy. how about that? >> reporter: on monday, it was raining again. her fitness students doing their exercises outside. still hoping for that one clue that will allow police to solve this murder/mystery. >> we're family. missy was not a trainer to us. missy was our family. she was a part of everything we did. >> reporter: investigators here say they have still not pegged a motive for this murder. but they say it's human nature,

>> he took something from my kids. he got grandkids. he got a mother that's still alive. >> reporter: the suspect, 37-year-old steve stephens, who has a license to carry a concealed handgun, recorded and uploaded godwin's murder to facebook. stephens also bragged he killed others. but police have found no evidence of that. he was last seen driving this ford focus. >> obviously this individual is armed and dangerous. and quite frankly, at this point, he could be a lot of places. >> reporter: in philadelphia, eight elementary schools and a high school were locked down monday, after 911 callers reported seeing him in the area. but no sightings were confirmed. >> we're going to make this individual's world very, very, very small. >> reporter: in his facebook rants, which has since been taken down, stephens blames a girlfriend for making him snap. in a statement, facebook says we disabled the suspect's account within 23 minutes of receiving the report of the first murder video. but added, we know we need to do better.

half-century later. >> stephanie rule has her story. good to see you. >> reporter: good morning. this remarkable 70-year-old woman, age is just a number. but time, 50 years of it, has made quite a difference in the age of running. 70-year-old katherine switzer knows this 26.2-mile stretch of the boston marathon well. >> i just ran the fastest marathon i've run in 46 years. >> reporter: finishing the race monday with a personal best. and wearing the same number she wore 50 years ago. that first marathon was definitely no ordinary marathon in the park. >> very few were in sports. >> reporter: switzer recalls telling her coach she wanted to run. >> when i told him i wanted to run the boston marathon. he said, no dame ever ran no marathon. >> reporter: she signed up for the race in 1967. not knowing at the time only men were allowed to participate.
