thanks for joining us, i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. how about sun glasses today? >> yeah, i think so. we had the rain early and by the time we see the sun rise, it will be mostly clear starting out the day and throughout the afternoon. we're in for some drier weather and also feels milder, especially compared to yesterday morning at this time. 55 degrees in palo alto and san francisco. in oakland it's 58 degrees. so not a bad start. look at how warm it will be today. very much like yesterday with highs in the low 70s, sunshine to go along with that, up to 69 in oakland and 68 in palo alto. morgan hill today a high of 72 degrees. we're looking at some nice weather also for the weekend. we'll talk about the next chance of rain coming up. vianey is tracking what's happening on the roadways. >> it looks, kari, like people are still running into the wet roads, causing a couple of

issues. specifically right now major slowing along southbound 680 near state route 4. there is still debris on the roads. only one lane open in that area, which is why we're already seeing backup, even at this 5:00 hour and doesn't look like they are going to clear that out in the next 20 minutes, but they have crews working on it. there is also a wind advisory to the bay bridge. here's a check at the east bay drive times. 14 minutes. live look along 101, still seeing a lot of cars out there. please, slow down. we are still seeing ponding water on the roadways. >> clearly, a little wet in the south bay. that's what my experience was this morning, too. as you head to work this morning, might be bracing yourself because you know the roads have taken a beating because of the recent heavy rains and busy winter. >> we can all attest to that. >> today in the bay's bob

riddell has been talking to different bay area counties and crunching the numbers all week. he's live in danville with a stair only on "today in the bay." what did you find, bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, chris and sam. we reached out to the public works department and found four counties saw significant increase in the amount of tax money spent to fix potholes caused by recent winter rains. keep in mind, this does not include money by city or caltrans, just the county. here in contra costa county, they spent around $124,000 fixing potholes in the first quarter of this year. that's close to 33% increase from the same period last year. next door alameda county saw the greatest increase in spending. they spent close to $144,000 in q1. that's up more than 50% over last year. san francisco city and county

public works spent the most amount of money, cost almost $760,000 to fix over 10,000 potholes this past winter. that's about a 35% increase in spending over the same period last year, and you look in santa clara and the south bay, their county roads and airport department, this q1 they spent close to $168,000, that's about a 23% increase over last year. san mateo county public works department tells us on the phone their pothole expenses did not change much from last year. potholes took a back seat to the problems with mudslides on the roads. bay area tire shops are familiar with the problem. they see a regular flow of drivers coming in with cracked rims and busted tires. >> you know, kind of good for us, but it's too bad for the customer, because they have to spend a lot of money to replace the wheel, to get it repaired and stuff like that. we should have the streets a

little bit better, but, you know. >> the state says you can raise gas taxes, that's what they want to do. legislators in sacramento just approved governor jerry brown's plan to raise the gas tax by 12 cents a gallon. that along with a new vehicle fee will raise $5 billion a year to fix california's crumbling bridges and roads. reporting live in danville, bob redell, today in the bay. developing story out of the east bay this morning, a man shot in his own house and the search continues for the violent burglar responsible. this happened on chimney rock in the oakland hills about 6:00 last night right near the sequoia country club. the burglar broke into a house where the 30-year-old victim was in the kitchen with headphones on at the time. a relative said he was shot in the chest, but is expected to survive. >> he was able to call the police. he had been shot.

>> i feel bad for him, but sounds like he's doing okay, his mom is doing okay, that's the most important thing. nice neighbors, nice neighborhood, and we have a jerk within this neighborhood. >> everybody pulling for him to be okay. police searching the area, they never found the gunman. 5:05 now and the search continues this morning for a missing teenager out of mountain view. this is 13-year-old myra renteria. she was last seen leaving crittenden middle school yesterday. police say she is considered at risk because of her age, so do look at her picture. she is 5'1", brown hair, brown eyes. if you want to share the picture, you can find it at nbcbayarea.com. sheriffs deputies are reaching out to the public this morning in search of more victims in a child molestation case. deputies say the man is behind bars accused of child molestation last year in richmond, but authorities believe there could be more areas in vallejo, richmond, and

fairfield where he lived. saddening and developing story out of the north bay. search crews found a body near the area where a boat capsized yesterday. the ten-foot boat was found in the water. an ice chest with fish, as well as a wallet was also found. crews were looking for a 64-year-old oakland man on the boat when it capsized. we do not have word yet on the identity of the body found. may get a knock on the door in just a few hours if you live on the peninsula. >> more than 300 certified volunteers will visit 20,000 homes as san mateo first responders test their own preparedness. the exercise is called silver dragon. this is video from a previous training. first responders will practice coordinating and dispatching search or community emergency response teams into neighborhoods there. we talked with a doctor with the

san mateo county health system. here's what they say. >> very important. as we know, that in this area, earthquake is imminent, right? and so we want to make sure that the search members are prepared and the exercise on an annual basis, so they know that if something happens, they know exactly what they need to do. >> the exercise runs from 9:00 this morning until noon. happening today, also being prepared for flooding. city officials are going to go over their risk reduction project after what we saw this winter. the recent wet weather brought creek levels very close to overflowing. that plan is to divert and store water and remove a building that obstructs the creek's flow. that session starts at 7:00 tonight. and folks living near the san carlos airport can make their complaints heard today if you got them. open house is set for 6:00 tonight on sky way road. officials are going to be

discussing an upcoming federal study of that area. happening today, california officials will show off hydrogen fuel cell cars by driving out of the bay area. the green cars will leave the state capitol at 8:30 this morning and they are expected to arrive at a refuelling station on west "a" street in hayward by 10:50. from there, going to head off to another hydrogen station in san jose. all right, so the sharks are facing what some might call a make or break moment in their stanley cup playoff series against edmonton. >> they got plenty of oxygen from their game four victory, now game five is tonight in alberta. the series, of course, tied two games apiece. if the sharks can win this one, they'll take a 3-2 series lead and head back home to the shark tank on saturday. you can watch tonight's game at 7:30 on nbc sports california. if you're planning on hitting the links today, especially at half moon bay, the

grass may still be wet after very early morning rain and our temperatures will be in the low 50s to start. going to see that sunshine and not making it out of the 50s with some breezy winds. how about hiking in the east bay. some of those trails may still be muddy as we start off this morning at 55 degrees, then the sunshine will dry things out. up to 60 degrees at 10:00. by 2:00 today we're at 65 degrees with some breezy wind. it will be a very nice afternoon for getting out or doing whatever you'd like to do today, especially with some kids still on spring break. as we head into the next several days, we will still see some more dry weather. i'll talk about that and a look at the sierra coming up. vianey is talking about what's happening right now for your morning commute. >> aside from the slick roads, chp have officially changed that crash into a sigalert. it appears several lanes are blocked and they have started

it's 5:13. if you're planning to head to the sierra this weekend around lake tahoe, still some lingering light snow and rain showers, but all of this clearing out and fairly smooth drive along highway 50 or i-80. looking at the next couple of days, all that lingering snow will be moving out. up to 54 degrees for tomorrow and saturday more of the same. it's going to be dry all weekend, and we have 256 inches of snow at the base of squaw valley. as we head into the next several days, we are going to see warmer temperatures in the bay area. those numbers coming up in five minutes. taking a live look right now

in san jose along 101, still some slick roads out there, so please remember to slow down. i'll have an update on the crash around 680 southbound coming up. oh, my god. >> all right, this video is pretty nuts. you're going to want to stop for a second and look at this. this story is about a driver who's in the red car being dragged by a big rig down the highway. this is in southern california and another driver passing by captures it on his cell phone. understandably, the video is going viral. the truck driver was completely oblivious to what was going on. you see the guy trying to wave his hand, help me here. drive that car for four miles on the highway. the driver was not hurt. >> i don't know how he didn't know. >> how could you not know? >> a new video out of ohio where

a torrential downpour floods parking lots, leaving dozens stranded. a pregnant woman was among a group of women that was pulled from a flooded burger king restaurant. after they were pulled to safety, they say they were glad to be past that stressful ordeal. >> i'm cold, my phone is destroyed, i don't have no blanket, no jacket, no nothing. i don't know what to do. >> more storms are in the forecast for this afternoon in the same area. >> all right, next time bring a jacket. 5:15 right now and bill o'reilly has entered the no job zone. >> scott mcgrew, fox says o'reilly has to go. >> fox has dumped its most popular host after new allegations of sexual harassment. he will be replaced by tuck carlson. it's worth noting claims against bill o'reilly are not new, but a recent "new york times" investigation found there were more women making claims against o'reilly than anyone realized,

and then advertisers started to pull out and that is when fox let him go. a terse statement from fox news this morning. "after a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the company and bill o'reilly have agreed that he will not be returning to fox news channel." o'reilly had his own statement. "it's tremendously disheartening that we part ways due to completely unfounded claims, but that is the unfortunate reality many of us in the public eye must live with today." in emeryville, high-tech company apologized to el camino hospital after "the wall street journal" revealed the company had been using the hospital's data in a demo used to land new clients. the report says no patient records were revealed. the company showed network maps of computer systems and data in live demonstrations to two potential new customers.

the ceo said the blog post, i can imagine many of you are getting tired to waking up to bad tanium press stories hitting your inbox. average rent fell about 1% over the past year to a median $3,451. that is a huge turn around from a year ago when they were up nearly 9%. if you don't want to rent, median home price, $986,000. lastly, sam and chris, bit of an embarrassment this morning for the makers of a juice machine. i've talked about this thing before, one of the machines that squeezes a specially built bag of fruit to deliver fresh juice. you can't put an orange in there, you have to buy the bag. it's like a keurig for juice. you have to buy the special bags and they are $7. the machine is $400. used to be $700. it doesn't work if the wifi

doesn't work. we established this is a machine a lot of people may not want. reporters found out yesterday if you have the bag and squish them with toothpaste, it's the same. machine is irrelevant. >> you can also just eat the fruit and vegetables. >> you could do that, as well. >> lots of fiber there. >> brilliant idea. a lot of people worried about their health around here obviously. a massive study wants to map out human health, caused project baseline. launching that study with duke university and stanford medicine. it wants to enroll 10,000 people from different backgrounds in california, also north carolina, to track their health. this includes people in good health and people at high risk of serious disease. chris, turns out that running or the mere idea of running may not be such a solitary thing after all. people who like to share their running experiences with other runners tend to run more

going to warm up. and we are looking now at temperatures that are feeling mild at 53 degrees in the tri-valley and 55 degrees in the peninsula. and it's 58 degrees in the east bay. even though we see on all of these cameras that some of the roads are wet, there will be some clearing today. as the seven-day forecast comes up, several more days of dry weather looking at a high today in the peninsula up to 66 degrees and 68 degrees in the east bay, and 71 in the north bay. and as you get out there and train for your marathon, sam, there will be a moderate amount of tree pollen in the air, also a moderate amount of grass pollen. hopefully that little bit of rain we had this morning will help wash some of the allergens out of the air temporarily. we're looking at some rain that rolled through early this morning, especially for parts of the east bay and south bay. we measured from a tenth to quarter inch. we'll have more dry weather, but more clouds moving in saturday

afternoon that will help bring down the temperatures just a few degrees on sunday. it's bright and sunny. then our next chance of rain for the bay area will be on tuesday afternoon, into early wednesday morning. we'll be watching another storm system moving in. as of right now, doesn't look to be that strong. we are going to see some more sun and a mix of sun and clouds for the weekend, up to 67 degrees in san francisco and for the inland areas, the weekend is looking nice. the warmest day in this forecast will be on friday. we're up to 79 degrees there. almost hitting 80 in a few spots. then it comes down this weekend with more clouds moving in and a chance of rain next tuesday during the afternoon. vianey, what do you have going on? >> well, kari, the wave app issuing good conditions, but so is our traffic map right now. we can see a wide overall view, traffic sensors are picking up a lot of green and more good news, the crash we were tracking earlier, the sigalert has been cancelled and they have opened

shoppers back--- with lower welcome back. 5:25 right now on your thursday morning. whole foods wants to win shoppers back, and how are they going to do that? apparently with lower prices. the wall street journal reports investors want the company to change how it's distributing products to lower the amount you spend there. that could mean less variety as a result and customers might not see smaller local brand items on shelves as much as they do now. nbc bay area responds to a san jose family that could not get a refund for a furniture protection plan, even though they say they were promised one when they bought it. >> we looked into it.

joining us now with what he found out. >> they bought furniture in fremont back in 2011. they also paid $79 for a five-year peace of mind protection plan. they say they were promised a refund if they didn't have to use the protection plan, and, well, they didn't. after five years they went to ask for their money back, but the store had closed, so they say they went to another store and ashley corporate offices looking for help to get their refund, but they didn't get anywhere, so they reached out to us. we contacted ashley's corporate office and it issued a $79 store credit. now, what made this situation a little tricky, is most ashley furniture stores are independently owned and operated, so if a store shuts down, you don't have much resource, but in this case the corporate office stepped up to help out. in a statement, the corporate office said the customer

>> 5:31 now. today thousands of pot smokers will line up for the annual and illegal tradition, but in san francisco this year the celebration is going to feel a little different. >> will new money and rules this time around? after years of complaints from neighbors and problems of cleaning up trash, they are making some changes. pete suratos as all the details. >> good morning to you, sam and kris. yes, this unsanctioned 4/20 event can bring anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000 people to golden gate park. that's why they brought on a private sponsor this year to help out with the additional costs of added resources, such as the portable fencing behind me. you see this around a lot of parts of golden gate park this morning, but there are going to be other changes and some of those changes are going to include an increased police presence, gated security, addition of medical personnel on

site, as well as portable trash bins and toilets. it's going to be handy, especially when you think about thousands of pounds of garbage left on site following this unsanctioned event at golden gate park. also new this year vendors will need to be permitted. there will be zero tolerance for those who are not. we did get a chance to speak with a woman who came from utah for the event about the new changes. >> too much controlling will make the event and make it not as fun for everybody. it's part of the whole thing is it was a whole hippie culture. >> reporter: i want to point out this is not a city sponsored event and it is illegal to smoke pot in the park, but it's clear the city feels this is the best way to handle the thousands of expected pot smokers expected to be here later today. as of right now, no road closures set as a result of the 4/20 event, but in the next hour more about the changes being made and how it's going to impact the event overall. live in san francisco, pete

suratos for today in the bay. >> pete, thank you very much. all new this morning, police trying to determine if anything was hit when someone fired a gun last night in downtown concord. this happened about 10:00. you see it right there on your map. nobody was injured. all police could tell us last night was that a shot or perhaps shots were fired. we're still calling them and will get an update this morning. 5:34 now. this morning search and rescue crews will continue to scour the area near the truckee-tahoe airport as hope is fading for a north bay couple whose plane just vanished. brenda and mark richard of santa rosa flew out of the truckee airport monday bound for petaluma, but they haven't been heard from since. the search for their plane is focused on the rugged area northwest of the truckee-tahoe airport. brenda, who neighbors say has been flying for years, was at the controls. >> did she say why she wanted to get that pilots license?

>> i think it was a bucket list item. >> really? >> yeah. >> it's a shock, absolute shock to hear that something has happened to them. >> neighbors tell us that not only are they parents, but the richards are grandparents, as well. 5:35 right now. happening later today, don't be surprised if you see a large police presence in berkley. officers are going to be training on la conte avenue. police are going to be using blank rounds, so don't be surprised if you hear what sounds like gunfire. training should last between 1:00 and 3:00 this afternoon. authorities in the north bay say a homeless man who took off in a stolen car is now hospitalized after rolling that car during a police chase yesterday morning. this is a picture from santa rosa police of the outcome. officers say that they were following up on a shoplifting report and when they found that car, the driver took off with

police in hot pursuit. the pursuit, i should say, the suspect is expected to face several different charges once he's released from the hospital. 5:36 now and a san francisco cable car operator may not be going anywhere for a while after being arrested for pocketing fares. as you know, a lot of out of town cable car riders give cash directly to the conductors. yesterday, san francisco police arrested 61-year-old albert williams of napa. prosecutors say he pocketed hundreds of dollars for himself every month. happening today, foster city educators going to be protesting for better salaries. this happened at the foster city school district offices. the teachers and educators don't believe their salaries are enough for the cost of living in san mateo. talks with the district at this point have stalled. protesters plan to meet at 5:30 this evening, just before the school board convenes. free tuition at the city

college of san francisco, but it does come with a catch. students are going to have to work for it. the san francisco examiner reporting city college students would need to maintain a 2.0 gpa, and complete half their units every semester in order to qualify for free tuition. undocumented students will also meet california residency. city officials are still working out the details, but free tuition could be coming as soon as next semester. a planned sewer rate hike could become official today. sanitary district members will vote this afternoon. it would raise rates 7% this year and another 7% next year, and that money would go toward improvements. each hike amounts to about $3 more per month for customers. new details this morning about the spillway failure at the oroville dam. state agents overestimated the durability of both spillways, the main and the emergency

spillway. nearly 200,000 people were evacuated because of concerns of the flooding. state water officials right now are defending their handling of the crisis. it's 5:38. as you get ready to head out, it's still wet out there after early morning rain and temperaturewise not too bad. it feels like where we should be for this time of year with the mid 50s. upper 50s in oakland. heading out for the school day as we'll start out with puddles still left over on the sidewalks and roads and clearing skies, but at recess, lots of sunshine helping to dry things out with some mild temperatures. by this afternoon, heading home from school we'll be warming into the 60s with a light wind. you can let the windows down on the bus or driving in the back of the car with mom. as we head into the forecast this weekend, going to see some more dry weather. i'll have a look at the tahoe report coming up in about three minutes. vianey is tracking now the roadways. >> i'm definitely excited about that dry weather and sure

culture. prince passed away april 21st at the age of 57. not backing down any time soon, conservative political commentator ann coulter is taking jabs at uc berkley for its decision to cancel her campus visit next week and she says she's still coming. she tweeted, instructing berkley student group to spare no expense in renting my speaking venue. officials fear more violence like february. the speakers they invite have a right to express themselves. happening today, state lawmakers are going to be discussing bills aimed at stopping construction of the president's border wall. one of the main campaign promises, of course, was to put up the wall on the u.s.-mexico border. several state lawmakers are looking at new legislation aimed at halting construction.

5:46 now. president trump has to deal with new threats this morning from north korea. >> in the meantime, scott, the white house is defending its portrayal of a so-called armada in the area. >> yeah, we'll get to the armada and where in the world is carl vinson in a moment, but let's talk about the threat kris was talking about. a north korean newspaper run by the government said north korea is ready to launch a super-mighty preemptive strike against the united states. earlier this week, north korea put together a musical about blowing us up. ♪ >> the singing was followed by real video of that test firing of a missile and then the fake video of it passing over the pacific and hitting several targets, including us in the bay area. as we were reporting yesterday, there's confusion over whether the uss carl vinson and its

carrier group is or is not headed towards north korea. the white house says it was, then we learned it was headed in the opposite direction. here's sean spicer's explanation. >> that's not -- but that's not what we ever said. we said that it was heading there, and it was heading there, it is heading there. that remains -- but that -- if there's an impression, then that's not -- there should have been clarification from people who were seeking it. >> what sean spicer is trying to say, the white house says if you're headed somewhere, you're headed there if you get there eventually. the press interpreted the president's statement, we are sending an armada to mean it was going directly to the area around north korea. finally, sam and kris, my hat's off to the reporter tracy january at "the washington post" that figured out snap-on tools, the company where president trump signed the hire american order tuesday does not always hire american.

forecast at the bottom of the screen, expect more of that sunshine and even a spike in temperatures by tomorrow. we'll talk about that. but it's going to be up to 68 today in the east bay and as we get a live look outside at san jose, some of those roads are still wet, so make sure you're wearing comfortable shoes. you also want to make sure you have on some jeans and long sleeves as it will be cool to start, but then you want to be comfortable throughout the day. the rain we had earlier this morning moving off towards the east, so we did in some parts of the bay area measure from a tenth to quarter inch and for this weekend during spring break for some schools, maybe you're planning to head to the sierra. early morning rain and snow showers clearing out and we're looking good heading through the summit as we'll see the lingering rain moving out and temperatures reaching low 40s. up to 54 degrees tomorrow, as well as saturday. over the next few days, increase in cloud cover, but no rain. even on sunday mostly dry.

was supposed to welcome back. 5:57 on your thursday morning. a south bay easter egg hunt that was supposed to raise money for veteran service dogs was cancelled at the last minute because of a permitting issue. the organizer is blaming the county. that event was planned for last saturday. the nonprofit organization trains service dogs to help veterans with ptsd and other conditions, but the day before the event, santa clara county

officials called organizers saying they didn't have a permit. the founder of operation freedom paws is questioning why they needed permission for a basic easter egg hunt. >> nowhere in there did we feel that for a two-hour event like an easter egg hunt that we would need a permit, because it's no different than having an open house for a business. >> well, the founder says they lost a few thousand dollars from having to cancel this event. county planning department says the nonprofit could have been hit with a code violation if someone complained. northern california gas station drew big crowds during a going out of business sales. people waited in line for more than an hour to get gas for $1.75 a gallon, that was a full dollar less than other stations in the area. the owner says the bargain price was a final thank you to his neighborhood. kris, there are nearly 3 million girl scouts across the country, but one troop in new york has an extra special bond.

>> group 6000 is new york's first troop for homeless girls. there are 22 members in the troop right now. a single mom originally started that troop for her three daughters. the family of five shares a tiny room in a homeless shelter and one day a week it becomes a meeting place for the girl scouts. >> girl scouts has made this place even better, because i have something to look up to on fridays. i get to go upstairs and help the younger kids or do my projects with my friends. they are my favorite days now. >> and the girls say they learn a lot of lessons and consider themselves real friends. >> that is in the spirit of the girl scouts there. right now at 6:00, you can still see some wet conditions hanging around this morning, but for the most part the rain is out of here. >> that's what's you're seeing right now, but it is drying out. a look at the temperature trend coming up in the microclimate forecast. s/
