frances. a lot to get to. the big question, will there be a shutdown. he calls it an art officials barrier and not very meaningful. a different kind of presidency he says. a looming government shutdown, it's just five days away. the administration's persistence to get the border wall funded could complicate matters. the president wants taxpayers to bang roll the wall insisting that at a later date mexico will be paying in some form. here is budget director mick mulvaney. >> we don't think there's any structural reason the house and nat cannot do both things in the week. if we can have an agreement keeping the government open, that can get done this week. if the house at least can get its ducks in a row to vote on health care, they will do that as well. >> as of this morning, white house chief of staff reince priebus seems to be back pedaling. >> i think as long as the president's priorities are adequately reflected in the cr and allows us to get moving with

marks on the economy in comparison to foreign policy. for more we're joined by nbc's tracie potts. the white house has a jam packed schedule ahead of the 100 day mark. tell us what is in store. >> starting out today the president meets with the un security council. tomorrow the focus farmers and agriculture as ag secretary sworn in. wednesday, that's when the administration rolls out its big plan for tax reform plus a briefing on north korea. on thursday the president of argentina meets with the president and that gets some attention at the white house with an executive order being signed there. on friday energy and meeting with nra. friday, he'll be at a rally in pennsylvania while the white

house correspondents' dinner is going on. he's declined to attend that dinner along with his staff. what are the people thinking, what is the public feeling about president trump as he closes in on 100 days. our poll shows record low of 40%. but abc "washington post" poll showed 96% of those who voted for him would vote for him again. >> all right. nbc tracie potts for us. tracie, thank you. nor to more complications and escalating tensions between u.s. and north korea. north korea threatened to sink aircraft carrier "uss carl vinson" which is headed to the region, this as a former university professor detained in pyongyang for reasons unknown. kelly cobiella reports from seoul, south korea. >> with u.s. "carl vinson" headed to north korea, another american in custody in pyongyang. the associated press identifies him as tony kim,. in his 50s.

a former professor doing aid work in north korea for a month. arrested at pyongyang expert as he was leaving the country. the third american now held by the regime. student warmbier serving 15 years for trying to take a propaganda banner as a souvenir and korean american business man serving 10 years accused of spying. all bargaining chips says former governor bill richardson that helped win the release of prisoners before. >> they always want something in return from the united states. a high level visit or humanitarian assistance. >> but north korea doesn't seem in the mood for talking. kim jong-un's regime threatened to sink ab aircraft carrier, warned australia that support for the u.s. would be a suicidal act and threatened a nuclear strike on the country as vice president pence toured sydney. the latest satellite photos of north korea's nuclear test site show activity but shed no light on the regime's plans.

>> thank you to nbc's kelly cobiella for that report. this morning global sympt symptom -- stock markets are jumping on new details from the french presidential elections. the field has just been narrowed down to two candidates. this is the first time in french history no mainstream candidate will be in the run off election. it's scheduled for two weeks from now. nbc's tammy leitner in london for us. tammy, good morning. what's the range of reaction here? >> good morning, francis. we have two very different candidates that shows how divided france is. voters here have essentially snubbed the political establishment because nets candidate represents a mainstream party. that has never happened in the country's modern history. far right populist marine le pen and macron will face off in the election. macron came away with a slight lead over le pen. keep in mind macron is a novice.

the 39-year-old investment banker had no support from a political policy. he has an optimistic vision for a tolerant fans and unified europe, one with open borders. le pen ran on platform, one that calls for closed borders, less immigration and tougher security. security was tight for elections after the terror attack in paris. thursday night thousands of security officers patrolled french polling stations and likely it will be tight for the may runoff as well. this election really is remaking the country's political landscape. back to you, frances. >> all right. nbc's tammy leitner for us in london. thank you. new orleans has begun process of removing confederate war memorials. the battle of liberty place monument dismantled in the early morning hours today. it's the first of four monuments set to be relocated and given proper historical context according to city officials. the move comes hours after one

. this video of a little girl taking a terrifying tumble off the back of the bus. there she is highlighted on the ground. a volunteer firefighter saw the whole thing and came to the 4-year-old's rescue. he moved the girl away from traffic and off the hot pavement. she was unconscious but came around by the time paramedics arrived. he said the bus driver came back 15 minutes later after realizing what happened. the girl's parents said she'll never surgery for a broken jaw but is expected to make a full recovery. that's a long time for a bus driver not to realize what happened. >> thank god there wasn't a car behind. the number of anti-semitic incidents in the u.s. have skyrocketed according to anti-defamation league's report. it shows 86% uptick compared to the same period last year.

french presidential election went as expected. the main stocks index up 4%. euro at a five-month high against the dollar. u.s. stock futures signal the dow will open sharply higher this morning. investors may turn their focus to earning season as nearly 200 companies in the s&p 500 are set to report this week. meanwhile rob lowe has a new role, colonel sanders. the actor debuted as kfc's iconic founder and this weekend's promoting the new zinger chicken sandwich. kfc will start selling the zinger today, which was previously only available overseas. lowe says his grandfather took him to meet colonel sanders in the 1950s so he thought this would ab nice little tribute. mcdonald's giving employees a new uniform but they are not loving it. the company will outfit its entire u.s. staff, 850,000 people in black and gray polo shirts, t-shirts, aprons and pants. but fortune reports about a
