good wednesday morning. life look right now at san francisco this morning. okay. i guess that san francisco is beneath that blanket of clouds, covering up the city skyline. even a little light rain outside before things finally clear up. today in the bay starts right now. good morning. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. so let's try to clear things up on this now wednesday morning with kari. good morning. >> halfway through the week. you're just trying to find your way through the fog in san francisco and the north bay. and it is going to be kind of misting and drizzling throughout the morning, and part of the afternoon as well. as we still have this weather system overhead that will not get out of here until later on today. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. it's 57 degrees.

visibility low, but it's all clear in the south bay as we're starting out with milder temperatures. it's 58 degrees and 57 in palo alto. and highs today will be reaching into the upper 60s and low 70s. cooler than yesterday, thanks to the clouds. we'll talk about a warm-up, a major warm-up in a few minutes. and mike is already tracking a car fire in san jose. >> a fire of some sort. a roadside one in san jose. some might call it a trash can fire. nobody as far as injuries or risk of injury, but it is off of frontage road, off highway 101 where we often see smaller fires, folks trying a keep warm overnight in the area. chp is going to make sure it's okay for the roadways. no closures reported for the on or off ramps and no delays throughout the south bay or east shore freeway getting to the bay bridge. here's the maze. back to you. >> thank you. we're going to show you live pictures this morning from san jose. this is where police say that a

woman was injured in some kind of fight outside of a jack-in-the-box. this happened shortly after midnight on 4th street, right next to the entrance to san jose state university. police are not giving us much detail. they say a woman possibly in her 20s suffered head injuries in front of the restaurant. you can see the crime scene tape. our crew found blood on the pavement outside. employees at the restaurant tell us they didn't see what happened. we reached out to san jose police. stay with us for updates throughout the morning. >> happening today, a quieter commute. caltrain is launching a new project that could reduce the noise impacts on neighbors. >> pete suratos joining us from san carlos with all the details. this is go to impact thousands of people and thousands of earbuds. good morning. >> good morning to you. yes, it's going to impact a lot of people who live near the caltrain stations here in san

carlos, but in order to reduce noise impacts, it's going to be noisy at night, at least in the short term. caltranwill begin this project starting tonight using a rail mounted industrial sized grinder to smooth out defects along the rail. this will hopefully reduce noise in the area as well as make rides smoother for the passengers. they're going to start at the san francisco caltrain station tonight, working down the peninsula before ending in the south bay. the equipment will be used between 10:00 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. when there is limited train service. it could make for noisy nights if you live near the tracks. the work is expected to take up to three weeks, wrapping up may 19th. we'll talk more about the impacts to folks who live around the caltrain stations in the next hour. live in san carlos, pete suratos. >> stick with us, pete. thank you. 4:33. a developing story. authorities investigating a shooting that left two people critically injured. this happened in hayward a little after 7:00 last night

near medford avenue. deputies say the victims were inside a car. this could have been some kind of drive-by shooting. there's no information on the shooter or the vehicle involved. continuing coverage. it looks like ann coulter's visit to the cal campus may be off, but then again, maybe it's not because her latest tweet says she plans to visit cal, invited or not. meanwhile, two campus republican groups that organized the visit are saying they will not host tomorrow's event. uc berkeley is saying, quote, the university doesn't have the desire or the ability to keep members from the public from coming on campus. here's what's students are saying. >> we think the movement has to be built. we're going to stand up and defend our immigrant brothers. >> people have the right to protest. she has the right to speak. i just hope it all goes well on thursday. >> school republican groups, by the way, are still suing the school, calling the decision to

delay coulter's visit a violation of freedom of speech. >> happening today, the first store opening for a controversy east bay development in the works for a long time. university village is a property that sits in albany on san pablo avenue. it made headlines about five years ago. you'll see the date there, october 2012, when a graup called occupy the farm took over part of the land demanding it to be preserved for agricultural use. today, sprouts farmers market is set to open. >> sunnyvale city employees could go on strike at any moment after a late-night vote last night. it means the union leadership could walk out at any time. the city is offering a 10% raise. >> we want to get the deal done. we really do, but we also need our families able to support themselves. that's what this is about. >> about 400 people belong in the union. many work as libririans, engineers, and mechanics. we reached out to the mayor and

haven't heard back. >> a dangerous intersection, at least for people who live there, but nothing has been done. so today, activists in san francisco's bay view neighborhood are launching a campaign trying to get the city of san francisco's attention. the intersection in question here is at 3rd and revere streets. the last six years, angtdivists have complained it's dangerous for pedestrians, especially for seniors and people with disabilities. today at 11:00, they're announcing a two-monthcome pain poopush city leaders to try to make changes. coming up, a 5-year-old boy is missing this morning. the unusual circumstances surrounding the disappearance, including an unconscious man, a video chat, and an arrest. but still, no sign of the child. and laura, the entire u.s. senate is being summoned to the white house by president trump. the reason for the urgent gathering, but the question as to why the president himself might not even attend. a developing story in southern

the dad after they say his story kept changing. he was eventually released. >> san francisco police are seeking two men believed to be involved in a shooting last fall in the tenderloin. they say the two men seen here walked into a market and shot a 61-year-old man on sixth street. police say the gunman is the man in the peacoat. it happened on november 6th at about 1:30 in the morning. the victim was sent to the hospital with a nonlife threatening injury. >> 4:40 on your wednesday. you want to talk about rage against the machine. surveillance video capturing a bizarre crime in mountain view. police say jason sylvain picked a foyt with a robot at a company last week. there's the surveillance. the robot sounding an alarm. he was arrested for prowling and being drunk in public. the robot was not damaged. >> high speed rail opponents will have one final chance in

their latest effort to try to block the project. the judge in the case has already issued a tentative ruling saying he plans to dismiss a lawsuit planning to block funding for the bullet train project. the attorneys will be presenting one final round of arguments today in sacramento. >> happening today, the entire u.s. senate, all 100 senators, expected to attend a special briefing on north korea at the white house. it will be led by the secretary of state, secretary of defense and other high level cabinet officials. the briefing was originally scheduled to take place at the capitol, but president trump suggested a change to the white house. there has been increased concern in washington over north korea's nuclear and missile testing. president trump is not confirmed to attend that session. >> coming up next, clearing up soon, we hope. first, the rain and clouds taking over san francisco right now. >> yeah, this is the last day we'll have to deal with clouds, and at times, some rain moving through. we're seeing it well to the north of us and dipping into the

62 degrees in the east bay. san francisco, we'll see a high of 63 degrees. and as we get a live look outside right now in san jose, you're standing there getting ready for the day. it will be a day inside the closet as you try to prepare for long sleeves and some jeans to stay nice and comfortable. it will be kind of a cool day. we had mist and drizzle, looking at santa rosa and farther to the north in mendocino county, we're seeing some light rain and it's been very spotty. that is what we will see dipping into the san francisco area as well as marin and sonoma county throughout the morning. and it could make it into the east bay. that's what the models are showing, a little bit of spotty showers. nothing really heavy, and then we hold on to the clouds for one more day. the seven-day forecast shows that after today, the mist and drizzle, well things will clear out in san francisco over the next few days and the temperatures warming up. we'll be in the mid 70s for the weekend, while inland areas will be in the 80s.

we continue with the 80s next week. and mike, you're tracking what's happening now on the san mateo bridge. >> flashing lights just before the break, but they seemed to have cleared the bridge with a little slowing showing up. no major issues across that span or any of the other spans. going under the water, b.a.r.t. goes well as well. a note for b.a.r.t., folks planning for the closure at the lair merit station, that has been waved off because the warriors are doing well so that may have a playoff game saturday or sunday. so again, b.a.r.t. is open for service all weekend. it's been scheduled for the next two weekends. give you more updates coming up. let's check the waze system because the roadways are moving well. some folks make a lot longer commute in the morning. if you go from antioch to the bay area, you have longer commute. an earlier start. a smooth, easy drive, but five minutes difference between 680 to the bay bridge versus the drive on highway four. you can sign up for waze, make

facing pg&e this morning after the cpu fined the utility for several violations related to the butte fire. >> but first, happening right now, groups fighting isis got help from a wild boars. they killed three isis fighters and injured five others. the isis fighters were probably hiding before an attack when they were confronted by the wild boars. plus, france says it has proof the syrian government was behind the chemical weapons attack. officials in the country said samples from the country match those from a previous attack. back with more news in two minutes.

to you. halfway through your work week, taking a live look. people up and about near the fremont area this morning. clear there. drizzling other places according to sam brock. we'll get everything clears up when we check in with kari this morning. 4:54. >> 4:54 right now, more troubles for pg&e. the utility now facing more than $8 million in fines. this is related to the butte fire. you might remember that 2015 fire east of sacramento that destroyed 549 homes and ended up killing two people as well. california public utilities commission said a tree hit an overhead electric conductor which ignited the fire. pg&e has been cited for failing to remove trees near the power lines. >> get ready for tense moments this friday. flood victims in san jose say they're ready to give elected officials an earful. >> bigad is here to explain what this all has to do with millions of tax dollars. >> last month, our reporting

revealed how nearly 11 million of your tax dollars were spent on designs that were supposed to reduce the risk of flooding for parts of san jose. but we discovered the pricey plans haven't amounted to a single fix. which left communities vulnerable during the devastating flood back in february. one lawmaker is demanding answers from the santa clara valley water district, which is responsible for protecting the area from that kind of disaster. $11 million that hasn't amounted to anything in 20 years is shocking. >> first thing you have to do is admit where it is you may have went wrong in order to fix it. unfortunately, i don't think we have seen that yet from the water district. >> you saw it as a way of them trying to avoid responsibility. >> i didn't see much owning of responsibility. >> the water district says it now needs to redo some of its plans in order to provide better protection at a cheaper price. tonight, we investigate what that means for neighbors who live in san jose's most vulnerable areas. you can catch our full

the snooze butten once or twice or three times. we ended up seeing a pretty beautiful day after all the clouds in the morning. a repeat today? >> starting out a little wetter this morning than it was yesterday. in fact, we have in some parts of the bay area like the north bay, along the coast, and in san francisco, visibility topping down to a half mile or less, with fog rolling in. you're looking at the current temperatures right now, and three microclimates and it's 56 degrees in the tri-valley. we look at three other microclimates now. in the north bay, it's 55 degrees with light rain there. we will have that chance of spotty showers as we go into this afternoon. expect a high of 68 degrees. in the south bay, north bay, and 62 degrees in the east bay. i'll have a look ahead to some drier and warmer conditions before the weekend. and as we head over to mike now, reporting some major damage in the north bay. >> major damage, but not a major crash or major injuries from what i understand. we're looking at t
