it is thursday morning. coming up on 5:00 here, glad you're with us, i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we've been waiting for the clouds to clear all week. >> and it finally happens today. it's going to be a beautiful day and even with all of the sunshine it won't be very uncomfortable. in fact, we'll start out with a cool morning and then see it warming up nicely and i could just take a look at this all day long. here's a look at the bay bridge from san francisco and you also see things getting moving out there on this thursday morning heading into this afternoon, expect a high of 72 degrees in san jose and 71 degrees in livermo livermore. 74 in santa rosa while san francisco will be up to 64 degrees. heading into the weekend it gets really warm. another problem for the tracks? >> another problem for another set of tracks, kari. we know about the richmond station closed at the end of the line getting to the bart station so el cerrito is your

alternate -- other station getting on to the bart tracks. and we have a problem for the ace train. ace train number one, 20-minute delay out of stockton because of some sort of signaling problems. these are unrelated issues, different sets of tracks but another problem for the trains. the rest of your systems are moving well and your drive through the area should be okay. we're looking at the peninsula and east bay with no major delays but over here in burlingame, there's a small delay because of a crash southbound highway 101 around broadway south of sfo. slowing through the lanes. sounds like two lanes are affected right now. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 5:01. preparing for the worst. tensions at uc berkeley expected to come to a head after ann coulter's speech is safety due to safety concerns. >> her speech called off yesterday, but the protests are still on. today in the bay's bob redell

with what is expected. >> reporter: good morning, sam and laura. the university and the campus police are prepared for possible problems here on campus even though ann coulter is not scheduled to speak however she hinted she might show up at cal. more on that in a moment. at least one group in support of her is expected to rally later this afternoon at berkeley civic center problem with a possible march to the cal campus where colter was invited to speak by campus republicans but the university canceled her speech over safety concerns. they were worried there could be a repeat of the violence that erupted when milo yiannopoulos, a supporter of the so called alt-right tried to appear later this year. coulter appeared on fox news to express her disappointment about the people who invited her backing down. >> they ran away, they gave in and there was nothing i could

do. >> we're citizens, we have a first amendment right to be here. we come to berkeley because this is supposed to be the home of the renewal of freedom of speech in the state of california. >> our commitment to the first amendment is unwaivering and unshakable. so, too, is our commitment to the safety of our students. >> reporter: the university said they proposed an alternative date for coulter to speak, citing concerns of safety and threats of violence. in an e-mail to the associated press, coulter hinted at an impromptu appearance on campus writing "i have my flight so i thought i might stroll around the graveyard of the first amendment." reporting live at the cal campus, bob redell, today in the bay. different bay area campus, different topic as well, live pictures from stanford university where there's been another report of a sexual battery. campus police say a female staff member says a man grabbed her while she was drinking from a water fountain at the mitchell earth sciences building yesterday. police found the suspect but the

staff member declined to press charges. police say the suspect does not match a description of the suspect who groped two women earlier this month. the search for that person continues. a developing story right now. two construction workers recovering after what's being called a catastrophic equipment fail dwlure that happened at facebook headquarters in menlo park. kris sanchez joining us live there. how are the workers doing? >> reporter: we understand they were treated at the trauma center at stanford university and it's because they fell from 40 feet up, managed to catch somewhere halfway down and the fire chief says it's a miracle they didn't land all the way on the ground. take a look at the picture that we got from the construction site. you can see the three men in the picture looking up at the beams that the two-iron workers were on and harnessed to 40 feet up above the ground when for some

reason that beam failed, falling halfway down to the ground before catching and stopping abruptly. according to the menlo park fire chief, their fall was stopped by their safety harnesses before tae hit the ground. this is video of the construction scene where the work will stop until cal osha gets to the bottom of how this incident happened. we're looking into the builders' safety record level 10 construction based out of sunnyvale is the third largest contractor in the bay area. now this incident happened at the site of facebook building 21, the same construction company built facebook building 20 which level 10 claims was praised by ceo mark zuckerberg for being done ahead of schedule and under budget. we're still trying to get information from cal osha, from facebook and also from level 10, the contractor here. we're going to try to get that information and have that update at 6:30. in menlo park, kris sanchez,

today in the bay. 5:05 right now. we're learning about a new arrest of a cable car operator. 55-year-old david reyes is accused of allegedly stealing fares in san francisco. investigators say reyes was pocketing cash fares. last week, conductor albert williams of napa was arrested for allegedly doing the same thing. $32,000 in cash was found at williams' home even though he's only accused of stealing $900. the embezzlement investigation began two months ago at muni's request. we are learning new details about a robbery heist on board a bart train in the east bay. this as we are previewing an important meeting about safety and bart's board of directors tonight. thanks to surveillance cameras, investigators are identifying the mob of teenagers accused of beating and robbing teenager this is past weekend. as we reported, roughly 50 teenagers poured on to a train at the coliseum station last saturday night. bart says they robbed seven passengers and injured a couple others as well.

we learned surveillance video from inside the train has led police to some of the suspects. they're now in the process of arresting them. happening today, we may learn more about how contra costa voters feel about the proposed west county jail expansion. supervisors in february voted to move ahead with the project. the board is hoping to get state funding for a high security wing. richmond city leaders are opposed. a market research firm will present their results in a survey of voters. students in one north bay city will get a little extra sleep starting next year. board of directors in novato approved this week later start times at all of its schools. the first bell will ring at 8:00 a.m. for high schools, 8:20 for middle schoolers and 8:40 for elementary school student s the superintendent says it will give students extra time to sleep and be prepared to learn. new details on recovery efforts happening in the bay. the coast guard is trying to pull up a sunken barge a 112

foot freight barge that capsized almost three weeks ago near the bay bridge during stormy weather. crews working on rotating the barge upright on the sea floor. we're told that could take several weeks to finish. more signs that climate change is changing our ecology. the press democrat reporting it's causing moss animals found in the waters off the sonoma coast to die off. as organisms change their chemical structure when they disappear by dissolving as the water cools down. it could also happen to sea stars, sea urchins. it's 5:08, if you're getting ready to enjoy some of that wildlife, maybe for the land animals, we will see temperatures in the low 50s to start out in the north bay hitting the hiking trails around 10:00, it will be 69 degrees, you see how those temperatures warm up and by 2:00, it will be

as you get ready to head home from work, just enjoy the day outside. it will be 70 outside. in the forecast, go well above this. our normal high will talk about how warm it get this is weekend coming up in five minutes. and these travel times don't look like a problem but we have a delay just south of spo that involves the first two numbers up there, we're watching for what's going in burlingame. san francisco's tourism industry is worried about a cool summer. >> there's a few things going on here. part of it is that the moscone center is closed for renovation. that's closing conference traffic. scott mcgrew is also saying that will the president's policies are restricting travel, too. >> reporter: you're right, the industry is on edge. the san francisco travel association says it's going to launch a new advertising effort called "always welcome."

the organization tells the san francisco business times the ad campaign was developed to set san francisco apart and show that it's a different kind of place. united airlines has released an 11-point internal report on that violent removal of a passenger on a st. louis flight. some details we knew, for instance, it's upping the value of travel vouchers to as much as $10,000 and it won't call police if the situation isn't a crime. probably the biggest change, it's going to try to figure out what flights people are likely to give up seats on and what they're not. for instance, passengers on flights to small cities or the last flight of the day are less likely to give up their seats. the situation dr. dao was in was terrible but the ceo's reaction added to the controversy, you'll remember. oscar munoz first reacted like he hadn't even bothered to look at the video. our lester holt will talk to munoz just ahead on the "today"

show. >> primarily, if we start with the basic premises and all our policies and how we fly, putting our customer at the center of this, i think the policies will fan out and avoid issues like that. had we had in place those brv s before, the incident with dr. dao would never have happened. >> that's ahead on the "today" show at 7:00. all kinds of stories are popping up about airlines. we're hearing about a delta airlines passenger who claims he was kicked off a plane after he stood up to go to the bathroom while the plane was taxiing for takeoff despite instructions from the flight crew not to. other reports say the plane had been waiting on the ground for 30 minutes. either way, the plane taxied back to the gate and the man was removed. other news, amazon quietly released a new camera called the echo look. it's supposed to go in your bedroom to figure out if you like your new outfit. you can see yourself from behind -- that's difficult in a

fans. a man is in jail for allegedly setting two fires at the trump hotel in las vegas. both were set last night, one on the pool deck level, the other on the 17th floor of the hotel. police say that toasters, towels and other materials were used to ignite the fire. one hotel security guard was injured. we don't at this point know the extent of the injuries. a wave of rock and dirt is blocking traffic in mendocino county. it happened yesterday. intense video a driver caught on her cell phone. it happened on highway 101 just north of the town of legas. construction workers closed the highway because of that unstable hillside. then all that happened. at one point, workers started running down the highway trying to warn people to just stay back. quite the cleanup will be happening there. >> good thing they caught in the time while someone wasn't driving by. that's always scaring going through those. >> it happens so quickly. >> and it's crazy to still see

the aftereffects of all that rain from the winter and even as it dries up it's still -- the impacts are still being felt around the bay area. as we get a look now starting out this morning finally it's dry and we don't have any mist or drizzle. it's not foggy. here's san jose and it's all dry and weather headlines show we'll start out at 55 this morning with a high today of 72 degrees. with those clearing skies we'll get warming temperatures but gusty winds. heading into the weekend we will be warming up. that's what everyone will be talking about. let me show you what it looks like outside. in oakland, 52 degrees. 46 in napa and santa cruz starts out the morning at 62 with highs later today heading up to 72 degrees in san jose while cupertino is at 70 degrees. very comfortable temperatures and antioch 74 degrees. and the peninsula will be cool along the coast at half moon bay

but then you head over on the other side of the hills and in belmont, 68 degrees, 64 in the mission district and north bay in novato up to 27 degrees. and we have a home game late morning -- early afternoon game today at at&t park for the giants so coming off of that game last night. and if you are heading to the game it will be very warm. a lot of sun. we'll start out at 60 degrees but it feels nicer throughout the day with temperatures reaching into the low 60s. the wind may be kicking up. wind speeds at 25 miles an hour into the evening. and the seven-day forecast shows that in san francisco we go from the mid-60s today to mid-70s by the weekend and then upper 70s early next week so with this dry weather we will be heating up and before you know it, it will feel like summer, 87 inland on wednesday. and mike, you're showing fewer

problems now on the roads? >> we always like to say fewer problems than the last time i had the report. now we have all the bart stations open after richmond got its power back so no delays reported. 45 trains on time. and the two trains on the ace line, ace 1 still has a 20-minute delay, that will likely stay that way through san jose, maybe picking up a few minutes but ace train number three is running on time, no delays for signal problems out of stockton. the rest of the roadways are moving well. that tiny build out of the altamont pass, but we're focusing on the peninsula, southbound 101, there was a clearing lane. we saw the speed sensors change from orange to green so we're back at speed but we'll look at our waze system because there was a delay there so as we look at waze we want to make a choice. you can make it as well. san francisco all the way down into san mateo, that purple route with the 280 reroute, that was a couple minutes faster but now we're back at 27 minutes for all the routes. 101 or 280.

mission toec 5:24 on your thursday morning, a south bay woman on a mission to reclaim her most prized possession, her wedding ring which was stolen when thieves broke into her car. >> very sad. carrie perez of morgan hill ran the rock and roll half marathon in san francisco a few weeks ago. good for her. she returned to her car at golden gate near franklin to find the window broken, the car trashed, several bags gone including her purse that had that inside, her engagement ring and wedding band. >> obviously the ring is super sentimental, it means a lot.

>> there is a chance police could solve the case. a private investigator has obtained video he says shows two people using perez's credit card after that break in. perez says she would pay a reward if an arrest was made. i hope they get it back. >> her heart is broken right now. nbc bay area responds to a pleasant hill woman who was told to pay off a loan that wasn't her loan. >> so she turned to our consumer team for help. chris chmura is here with another success story. >> christina thompson received an alert that her credit score dropped last may. after digging around, she found a delinquent loan on her credit report with a balance of $2,900 but christina said the account wasn't hers so she contacted the lender, net credit financial. they insisted the loan was christina's. she said she did everything she could think of to prove otherwise. she turned over her bank statements to show she never received funds from them. she even filed a police report but net credit financial didn't budge.

every single day, costing barts tens of millions of dollars. this was planned back in december to accommodate the public since those meetings take place in the morning. with the fare evasion topic relevant following that incident with teenagers hopping fare gates at the oakland coliseum stop, jumping on a train and snatching cell phones and purses from passengers on bart. i got a chance to speak to the bart board president who says fare evasion has been a concern for riders for some time and solutions will be discussed tonight. >> there's solutions including capital investments so making the barriers higher so people can't jump over them, doing some things with the fare gates to make them harder to fare evade and some solutions involving enforcement to have more officers out there. >> a bart committee is pushing for solutions to be a part of the upcoming budget which will

be discussed at tonight's meeting. this was the first evening meeting in two years and it will take place at the keiser mall in downtown oakland at 5:00 p.m. live in millbury, pete suratos, today in the bay. >> let's hope they get a handle on it. new this morning, vallejo fire investigators trying to determine the cause of an early morning house fire. this started on benicia road a few blocks east of interstate 80. the fire department posted this video. crews say the home was vacant and there were no injuries. keeping a high school fight in house. students at livermore's granada high school are on notice, being warned not to put images of a brutal fight between two girls on social media. that fight between the students happen on monday and it ended up leaving one girl with serious head injuries. the school's principal said what's equally disturbing was that "far too many students were crowding around filming the incident and discussing it on social media." students were explicitly told to

stop. >> we were told how serious this was and how we were told to not post anything on social media. >> as for the girls involved in the fight, the victim is home recovering and the other student was arrested for felony battery and could be expelled. new details on a story we first broke here on today in the bay. the search continues for the suspect involved in a violent beating near the san jose state campus. the fight was caught on surveillance video. we have it but i want to warn you the video could be disturbing. the brawl broke out about 1:30 yesterday morning outside a nearby jack-in-the-box. police say the victim was a woman in dark clothing, you can see there's several other women throwing punches. at one point the victim is thrown to the ground and kicked. no word on the victim's condition. >> you can see men there just standing around not intervening. and women. 5:34. developing in sacramento, authorities looking for the man who randomly attacked two women killing one of them with his bare hands. neighbors said the two women were on their daily walk

yesterday morning on a dirt track at a local high school. one woman in her 80s died from her injuries. the other woman is in her 60s, she's in the hospital recovering. that victim's daughter spoke at the scene. >> everyday they come to walk, everyday they come to walk but, you know, things happen. >> it appears to be just body weapons, hands and feet that were used. >> as police look for the person here, the attacker jumped a fence and ran off. investigators haven't determined if there's any kind of deeper motive involved? >> a man has been arrested in fairfield for exposing himself at a bus stop and police say he is a repeat offender 25. -year-old enrique sis nor rocis was arrested after a brief chase. police say cisneros was on probation for committing lewd acts before. a search of his cell phone revealed video evidence he had been reporting himself performing other lewd acts at various locations in fairfield. video voyeurs secretly

recording women. it's a crime on the rise in the bay area. >> vicki nguyen is here with a look at tonight's report. >> reporter: imagine being secretly recorded in a private moment by someone you work with. it happened to this bay area woman. she turned to us for help after discovering a hidden camera in the ladies room at her company. we found this is happening more often because cameras have gotten better, smaller, and cheaper. this woman called police after a co-worker found a tiny camera stuck to the paper towel dispenser. she was first stunned by the camera, then shocked by the police response. >> i feel really, really di disappointed? >> do you think your officer could have done a more thorough investigation? >> we always strive to do better. >> tonight at 11:00, we investigate the police response to this case and we'll tell you what not to do if you find one of these scammers. we investigate tonight at 11:00. if you have a tip for the investigative unit, give us a call.

4,400 feet of pipes will be replaced in the panoramic way. that's happening from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. the trump administration nowhere near giving up the fight to pull funding from sanctuary cities. despite the big legal blow on tuesday. that is when a u.s. district judge in san francisco blocked president trump's executive order. attorney general jeff sessions commented on that ruling last night. he didn't specifically mention an appeal but did say he is not ready to accept the ruling and vowed to keep fighting that case in court. live right now to the nation's capital and the clock most certainly ticking. lawmakers have until midnight friday to pass a spending bill and avoid a government shut down. there are some encouraging signs here to take away. we're hearing that lawmakers at the white house are nearing an agreement on a $1 trillion spending bill. this of course, comes after the

white house agreed not to withhold health care payments for lower income americans, those subsidies, that was one sticking point. another one, funding for the border wall. the house oversight committee is holding another hearing on the proposed wall on the mexican border. lawmakers are hoping to learn about the economic impact of the wall versus the security benefits gained. border patrol and immigration experts will be among those testifying. >> congress can talk about president trump's wall all it wants but it appears it's not going to fund it. >> one of many defeats for the president in the last week. >> reporter: really defeats and 180s. trump back when he was candidate said he had a number of priorities -- the wall, we're going to build that wall, he said. labelled china a currency manipulator, said he'd do that on the first day. ending the nuclear deal with iran, number one priority he said and throwing nafta in the trash. not only has he done none of those, he takes the opposite position on many of those. a short time ago the president tweeted he had a phone call with the leaders of mexico and canada and they convinced him not to

high school. a former san francisco reverend who is the first openly gaye bishop f gay bishop for the united methodist church could soon lose her title. bishop karen olivetto was elected bishop, she was previously a reverend in san francisco. this week, the methodist church's highest court heard arguments that could overturn her election because of a formal complaint. that's because in 1972 the church added language barring openly gay clergy. olivetto, who's in charge of 400 churches, says she's received 18 letters from people opposed to her serving as a bishop but she's received hundreds of letters of support. >> i'm glad it always says first openly gay bishop because i'm not the first by a bishop, there have been other gay bishops, there have been other gay clergy but they have had to serve in silence. >> a decision could come by tomorrow. the idea of all californians
