5:15 am
now. that's the measure of work and produ production we as americans do as a team. predictions put that at 1%. that would be slower than last year. first quarter gdp is always a difficult number to calculate. just a few days ago, president trump skewered obama's last year in office. the u.s. recorded its slowest economic growth in five years. gdp up only 1.6%. trade deficits hurt the economy very badly, he said. if we use just the prediction of this, the first quarter, mr. trump is off to a slower start than president obama. speaking of the white house, there was some confusion among white house staffers about the proposed tax cut. white house press secretary sean spicer indicated 401(k)s would no longer be tax deferred. that would be a huge change to tax policy and hit your retirement funds hard. the white house then reversed that. the tax proposals have been thin on detail and that has led to
5:16 am
confusion. >> it's the last trading day of the month. the dow set for its best month so far this year. stocks have been treading water. that tax plan, a lot more vague than investors were hoping for. nasdaq, though, closed near a record 6048. and the movie silicon valley has been waiting for for a while hits theaters today. called the circle based on the book by the same name. it's about a giant tech company, think google combined with facebook, called the circle, taking over people's lives. >> we will see them, we will hear them. we will hear and see everything. if it happens, we'll know. we're calling it seechange. >> the book was written a couple years ago. the movie took some time to shoot. it's almost like all the things they're warning us about, that's happened. >> yeah. >> a little late to the game on that one. >> although, interesting, tom
5:17 am
hanks is in this, and that felt very jobsian. >> a good combination of apple and facebook and google, especially google. >> cool. >> i saw a preview yesterday. tom hanks, though, everything he does is fantastic. thanks so much. happening today special episode of the ellen degeneres show. as the host looks back at when she revealed her sexuality to the world. we're approaching the 20th anvereracy of that moment and she's bringing special guests to reflect with. oprah winfrey and laura dern will join her to talk about the ground breaking announcement. it was called the puppy episode. >> this was not received well initially. degeneres's character revealed herself as gay around the same time as the actress did in real life. >> i was scared to do it, which is what made me more proud of myself because i think that when you're not scared of doing something, it's no big deal.
5:18 am
but you know, the definition of courage is doing something in spite of the fact that you have fear about it. >> no doubt about that. degeneres was a trail blazer. that show lasted one season after, but she would find new success, and the rest is history, as her talk show. >> right here on nbc bay area every day at 4:00. she's great. isn't that amazing now to look back and go it was ground breaking? and now. >> the kids would say, what? >> everything we have gone through in the bay area with gay marriage and we could go on and on. >> by the way, ellen degeneres cracks me up. everything she does, especially when she emotes, moves around. amazing. >> love the dancing. >> she loves the bay area, too. she adopted a dog from here. >> let's start dancing into the weekend. it's friday. >> the dog days of summer? >> not yet. not yet. we don't want it to be hot, but that's what's in the forecast. let's talk about that.
5:19 am

5:26 am
larry says he was shocked to discover that signing up for one company's dna test required him to give the company a transferrable license to use his family's dna forever. he was immediately fearful an insurance company could get its hands on his dna data. >> you could get into some really weird science fiction scenarios. >> can a simple search for ancestors put your dna in the wrong hands, and what do they plan to do with it? we're taking those questions to stanford law school tonight at 11:00. your rights under current law and how some protections might be changing. lara called us and so can you. 888-996-tips or nbcbayarea.com/sponds. i'll see you tonight at 11:00. >> we'll look forward to that. >> a lot of people want to know about their roots. we'll see. >> 5:26. you never know. way back when. >> famous actress helen mirren is embracing her new role, haunting as that, based right here in san jose. >> mirren bears a striking

white house this morning. >> president trump said there's a chance, i'm quoting him, we could end up having a major, major conflict with north korea. absolutely, he said. this is the first time in american history a president has openly discussed the possibility of a war with a nuclear-armed opponent. north korea showing off its artillery in a drill. remember, there are hundreds of artillery pieces pointed at seoul, south korea. they can level that city with conventional weapons. north korea hasn't tested a nuclear device yet, and america has made it clear if will attack if north korea does. why president trump brought up the specific possibility of war now in an interview with reuters is not clear. he calls it, again, major, major conflict. there's a lot of movement on the diplomatic front as well. secretary of state rex tillerson seen here with the vietnamese foreign minister tells npr the united states is willing to negotiate person to person with north korea. this is a change in u.s. policy
5:47 am
up until now, we insisted other countries take part. and as recently as last month, tillerson said direct talks were not possible. the united states has called for a meeting of the united nations security council. america will not be asking for any kind of resolution. rather we're told ambassador nikki haley will brief other countries and then once again ask china to step in and convince its ally, north korea, to back down. we're counting down the hours now on a functioning government as well. congress has to pass a budget or a temporary compromise or the government shuts down. it looks good. president trump has dropped his demand for funding for a wall. republicans have dropped their demand to push a second push for health care through. it just doesn't have the vote. as he ends his first 100 days, president trump in an interview with reuters on thursday said, quote, this is more work than my previous life. i thought it would be easier.
