>> i thought i would like to start this show by holding charlie up in the air because the crowd loves it. >> we have a busy day, though. let's get right to our top story and it is that surprisingly candid new interview with president trump as he opens up about the challenges facing his administration and the job of being president. and in a moment, we're going to have a candid conversation of our own with attorney general jeff sessions. but first nbc national correspondent peter alexander is at the white house. >> reporter: day 99 now for president trump. the president in a new interview saying the u.s. is considering serious action in north korea. also offering a personal view of kim jong-un, refusing to say whether he thinks the young dictator is rational or irration irration irrational. president trump keeping up the tough talk on north korea, insisting he prefer a diplomatic solution but offering this warning.

>> well, there is a chance that we could end up having a major, major conflict with north korea. absolutely. >> in an interview with reuters, the president saying this about north korea's erratic dictator, kim jong-un. he's 27 years old, his father dies, took over a regime, so say what you want, but that's not easy. rex tillerson will chair a meeting signaling an openness for the u.s. to have direct talks with the country. >> obviously, that would be the way we would like to solve this, but north korea has to decide they're ready to talk to us about the right agenda. >> reporter: tillerson indicating china has asked north korea to stop its testing, something that top korean officials say would never happen. overnight the country releasing this propaganda film, simulating

attacks on the white house, the u.s. capital building, declaring the enemy to be destroyed is in our sights. >> the white house is pushing back against new accusations it failed to properly vet michael flynn. >> why would you re-run a background check on someone who is the head of the department of defense intelligence agency that had and did maintain a high level security clearance? that's it. >> reporter: but flynn was fired by the obama administration in 2014 and nbc news has learned the trump transition did do its own background check on flynn and hired him anyway. now, the pentagon's inspector general saying it opened an investigation into flynn earlier this month over payments he received from a speech in russia in 2015 and lobbying work for turkey last year. >> also this morning making news from that interview, president trump acknowledging he misses life before he entered the white

i'm not involved in studying it. >> but there are investigations underway. if it turns out that general flynn lied on his paperwork for that application or if he continued to work for a foreign interest while he was the national security advisor, he may have committed a felony. and it will fall on your department to decide whether to prosecute him or let him go. you have already recused yourself from investigations involving any coordination between trump associates and russian officials. does that recusal extend to this area, to general flynn? >> my recusal deals with the campaign issues, but i would expect i'm not to be involved in this one. >> you would recuse yourself with any decision dealing with general flynn? >> yeah. i really don't know whether there is an investigation or should be and we don't confirm investigations in the department of justice. >> real quickly, his attorney says he has a story to tell, and they have asked for immunity in exchange for testifying.

should he be given immunity? >> we'll see the. the people who have the authority to decide that will decide that. >> the president just recently gave an interview and talked about this investigation, from which you have recused yourself and he said that russia is a faux story. it is made up. democrats lost an election and they used the russia story as a way of justifying how they lost. it is a fake story. your department of justice is, in fact, investigating whether or not the trump campaign colluded with russia. is it a take story, or is it a legitimate investigation? >> that's to be decided by the new deputy that was confirmed, deputy attorney general yesterday. he will follow his lots since i recused myself to make those decisions and i will not comment about the case and you know i can't talk about that case. >> true, but is it a legitimate area of investigation. >> i'm not going to go into that. i will let the officials discuss it. >> do you agree with the president that it is a fake story? >> i'll let others comment on that. >> here we are at the 100-day mark and the president gave this

interview yesterday and he said about the job of the president, this is more work than in my previous life. i thoue easier. what do you think of that? >> well, he -- it is a tough job. i got to tell you. and he works so hard. i mean, this man has tremendous strength and energy and he works into the night every night and, so, but it is a tough job. my job is a 12-hour a day job also. i've got to tell you. it is exciting and thrilling. you feel like you are making a contribution to america and i'm sure the president gets satisfaction from that. >> he may get points for candor saying, hey, this is harder than i thought it would be. health care is more complicated than i thought, he said. this issue of the dynamics between north korea and china was different than he thought. should he have been more prepared? >> i think he's prepared and has a good philosophy and approach to it but carrying out those

approaches and going through the minutia and congress and all the problems you have to execute change in america is a real challenge and it is frustrating, i'm sure, for businessmen on occasion who is used to getting things done quickly. >> we're doing the lightening round here. the cia director delivered a speech and said it was time to call out wickdy leaks for what it is, a nonstate, hostile intelligence service vetted by state actors like russia. do you agree? >> we are having a tremendous problem throughout our system, it seems to me, with leaks. some of this is very serious. not just a leak of abuse or theft or some whistle blower approving government. these are direct threats to the techniques and security procedures that our government has. and i'm worried about it. i think we need to do more to end this. we've got to step up our efforts. >> but to the question, do you agree with the director, wikileaks is a state actor

working at the beheadst of a state like russia. >> we are going to follow our responsibility to analyze these matters. the cia director shares with us leaks and things that he thinks are important. and we evaluate them appropriately. but we don't talk about any investigation that we have ongoing. >> although it does beg the question then would it bother you that candidate trump would say something like i love wikileaks during the campaign? >> well, they were putting out information that political information that i'm sure he valued. but -- >> so it's okay to embrace that kind of an organization if they're helping you politically. >> there are limits on what you can do to take people's private information off their computers. there are certainly limits of what you can do to share intelligent top secret information with our adversaries. >> that's what you call a poll

perry of topics. >> to arkansas now, which carried out its fourth execution in an eight-day span last night and the latest is calling for an investigation after the inmate lurched and shook while strapped to the gurney. he appeared to convulse and jerk for up to 20 seconds after the drug was administered. one of his attorneys described that execution as horrifying. he is calling for a full investigation. a spokesman called it an involuntary muscular reaction and said the state is unlikely to call for review. >> now to the trip by pope francis to egypt. it is the first visit there by the leader of the catholic church in two decades. in the wake of recent terror attacks on christian churches, security is a huge concern. >> reporter: good morning. in just over an hour, the pope will join a procession to his church that was attacked by an isis bomber in december.

you can see why many here are anxious and excited for this trip. he was driven straight to meet the president of egypt cht his route lined with security. the pope arriving in cairo this morning, met by high security, greeting journalists onboard the plane, telling him this is a trip of unity and brother hood. isis structure chs here weeks ago and isis urged its followers to slaughter christians. the pope recording his own video message. i come as a friend, a messenger of peace. >> the pope is calm and we are calm. you know, we go there. we take the necessary precautions and the local security also takes care of us. >> egypt's security was criticized just this month after bombs hit two churches in separate cities on palm sunday.

47 died. another attack before christmas captured on security footage. a church packed with worshippers and then an explosion. today the pope driving straight to meet egypt's hard line president, who has supported the christian community. more muslims are killed by islamic terrorism than any other groups. the middle east's largest christian community. >> what about the victims? the kids, the babies? >> killing people for what? >> catholics are a small minority. >> we are asking ourselves if the pope will come in these conditions, and he, himself, said i am coming to egypt. >> today he will reach out to all faiths. >> he will join peace and love. >> christian's fearful, but defiant. despite the isis threat, churches in cairo this week packed. >> meanwhile, officials tell me

there is concerns that isis fighters have been returning to egypt and the government has been criticized by human rights groups for a crack down on opposition leaders and journalists. matt? >> all right. thanks very much. >> here at home we're learning more about the settlement reached between united airlines and a passenger dragged off his flight for refusing to give up his seat. tom, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. united airlines is hoping now that the turbulence caused by this public relations dedockle will start to debeet. tlement in lightening speed, less than three weeks since this incident occurred. this morning united airlines is saying its pleased to have reached an amicable resolution of what it calls this unfortunate incident. that incident, the brutal dragging of dr. david dau that caused him to lose two teeth and

suffer a broken nose and concussion. details of the settlement are not being made public, but dr. dau's lawyers writing in a statement in part united has taken full responsibility for what happened on flight 3411 without attempting to blame others. united is to be applauded. the airline now promising more training for difficult situations, creative solutions for agents, fewer overbooked flights and up to $10,000 for passengers willing to be bumped for later flights. >> we breached public trust and we're profoundly sorry for that. >> the united ceo telling oscar holt, apologizing is not enough. it has to be followed up with action. >> we're going to put the customer at the center of everything we do. >> cell phone videos now shining a spotlight on almost everything that happens on board a plane. like this recent confrontation between a mother and an american airlines flight attendant over the removal of her stroller from the plane which left the woman in tears.

>> i'm not really clear on why i'm being asked to leave this plane. >> this passenger removed from his flight after getting up to use the rest room during the critical moments while the plane was waiting to tax off, despite instructions to stay seated. >> my bladder in that moment i realized more than anything i didn't have complete control over. the plane has to return to the gate. hamilton put on another flight and refunded half the cost of his ticket. the bottom line, if the plane is moving on the ramp, you've absolutely got to comply with the flight attendant's instructions. >> thank you. >> kind of lesson this morning on how not to approach a gas station. a car comes barrelling in. it slams into the gas pump, knocking it on to the car in the next lane. the man that was pumping gas got out just in time. fortunately there wasn't a fire. they believe the driver was fleeing the scene of another car crash moments earlier.

it all started about 1:30 yesterday afternoon. ten miles away in walnut creek. police say the man allegedly shot and killed a woman near larky park. we'll continue to follow both of these breaking news story. in the meantime, let's get a look at the forecast. >> we start out with sunshine as we take a live look at emeryville. a cool start this morning. we have lower 50s and even mid 40s for the valley, inland. after this cool start, it will be a nice and warm day. a lot of sunshine, up to 81 degrees today in concord. morgan hill, 78 degrees. 76 degrees in san jose, while san francisco will see a high of 68 degrees. if you're planning to head out to at&t park later this evening, it will be a nice day for a game, but it will also be breezy and cool. we'll start out at 63 degrees at first pitch at 7:15, and then by the ninth inning, we have clear skies and temperatures dipping into the lower 60s. over the next several days, expect high temperatures in san francisco to reach into the 70s. let's see how the roads are

with time running out, republican leaders expect to pass a one-week stop-gap measure that would give them time to negotiate a larger deal. and more dreams will be made in philadelphia tonight during the second round of the nfl draft. it got under way last night with the cleveland browns selecting texas a&m's myles garrett with the first overall pick. but check out the star of the night. kingston bolles. his dad brought him on stage, when was drafted by the denver broncos. gave him a kiss and wrapped them up in that jersey. >> this is what happens when they give sports stories to us. how about the baby? also this morning, after facing its criticism for spreading fake news during the election, facebook is cracking down and shutting down tens of thousands accounts.

nbc's gabe gutierrez is following this story for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. facebook is acknowledging what the intelligence community has been saying for months, fake news is all-too real. the social media giant is looking to combat what it calls information operations, that are trying to manipulate public opinion. this morning, facebook is waging war against the spread of fake news. >> they're just a bunch of fake users with online lives that you manage, right? >> reporter: the growing problem right out of the show vacation. get outraged. >> reporter: but the truth may be stranger than fiction. according to a new company report known as the whitepaper the profiles on facebook can be used by governments to manipulate opinion. >> the whitepaper that facebook

released is all about tracking down the sources far lot of the fake news. they're looking at not only the source, but the distribution methods that the actors are using. >> reporter: the report says the problem goes beyond just posting fake news stories. but amplifying them, with coordinated likes to boost their reach, as well as sending false friend requests and convincing links, leading to malicious software. the stakes are global. facebook deleted 30,000 accounts before the france election. and russia used the propaganda machine to influence the 2016 election. and following this warning from then-president obama. >> if we can't discriminate between serious arguments and propaganda, then we have problems. >> reporter: at the time, critics zeroed in on facebook, with ceo mark zuckerberg initially dismissing the impact at a technology conference. >> personally, i think the idea

>> dr. herald capowicz is also the president of the child mind institute. good to see you. when you look at the numbers, it's really astounding. 17 million children in our country have a mental health disorder. what kinds of disorders? >> we're talking about the fact this is the most common illnesses of childhood adolescence. someone knows and loves these children. if it's not your son or daughter, it's your niece or nephew. it's autism, adhd, depression, obsessive compulsion disorder. all psychiatric illness, occurs before age 4 and before 14. that's when you should identify and treat it. if i have a symptom for ten years, much harder to treat than a symptom that's six months old. >> back to the numbers -- is it that they've increased or that we're more aware of them?

>> we're getting better identification. and we're starting to do more science. the more science we do, the more we recognize that it's about the brain and not about your parenting. you know, you can get angry that your parents gave you bad jeans. but it's not the way your mother works or didn't work. or your father and mother got divorced. it's the fact that certain kids are more vulnerable than others. >> let's talk about the news. the series, "13 reasons why." a lot of young teens are watching it. it's premised on a teen's suicide. i know you have strong feelings whether teenagers should be watching this or all. >> 90% of all of the teenagers who commit suicide have a psychiatric disorder. and that's 5,000 teenagers this year. and 600,000, one every 2 1/2 minutes, will make an attempt that leads to the emergency room. that means that this show should be pulled off the air immediately. teenage suicide is contagious. we know for over three decades that when kids watch television where they depict a suicide,

your nose, and your immune system goes on the attack. that's what causes the similar thomas. the itchy, watery eyes, congestion, runny nose. >> you have two camps. the people that suffer from allergies and those that don't. is it the luck of the draw? >> it is the luck of the draw. there's interesting science. kids that you up on farms, less likely to get allergies and asthma. and the thought is, we live such clean lives that our immune systems are not exposed to as many germs. and the immune system is always on the lookout of things concerning to it. if you're not exposed to germs, you're more than likely to have allergies. >> is it possible to take steps and do things to prevent the symptoms from coming in the first place? >> it is. this is what i tell people. if you can avoid the allergen, you're going to win. you're outside, wear big sunglasses. when you get home, go ahead and

shut the doors and windows. run your air conditioning with a good air filter. vacuum regularly this time of year. personal hygiene is crazy. if you get home, put the clothes in the wash. and a lot of people forget to wash their hair. and they lay on the pillow and sleep in the pollen. >> not much of a problem for me. i'm one of the people that never had allergies until age 45 and then, they kick in. is that common? >> it's not uncommon. and there's no rhyme or reason. or sometimes people move to a new location and there's an allergen in the air that bothers them. >> you've gone through the symptoms, the clothes washing, taking a shower, the air felters. a lot of times you get to this season and think, do i have a cold? or is this an allergy? how do you know the difference? >> sadly, sometimes it can be both at the same time. the biggest difference is, with allergies, you're talking about itchy, watery eyes.

if you have a clear discharge, it's really thin. a cold should be self-limiting in a week or two. you're going to have the mucus buildup. >> treat them differently or the same? >> the good news is a cold will go away on its own. what i say with allergies, you want to take control of your allergies before they take control of you. there's ways to diminish the effects of allergens these days. >> a lot of medications. you see the commercials and the magazines, the ads are in there. when do you know you need to see a doctor and not just work with something you're getting over the counter? >> you feel like allergies or you think they're allergies and they're controlling your life, i'd go see your doctor. the great thing is now, if you see an allergist, they can put a game plan in place. a lot of over-the-counter treatments, antihistamines,

♪of the north bay good friday morning at 9:26. i'm sam brock. an update to breaking news we have been following all morning out of the north bay within the last hour and a half or so. a bomb squad told us they have cleared a fairfield apartment complex after looking for incendiary devices. this video you're looking at is from sky ranger which flew over the scene this morning. all of it is connected to something that happened this morning as well outside fairfield police department. we'll get to that in a minute. but this search happened north of air base parkway. as for what precipitated everything, the search came on the heels of a fiery attack by the fairfield police department. what you're looking at here is what's left of a device that was detonated in front of fairfield

bacon. you chop them up. and you take the bacon love. add onion. add fresh tine. saute that for five or six minutes. once it's sauteed, you will add chicken stock. add cream. and chicken caesar, caesar dressing from the jar. once that's in there, mix, mix, mix. have it come to a boil. once it comes to a boil, it looks -- oh, my gosh. >> whoops. >> we're going to cook the spatula. >> the spatula is in the dish. so, you take this. now, you take the chicken, the bacon and the parsley. then, you take this guy right here. you strain your angel hair pa a pasta. once this is all mixed, you take that and mix these bad boys together. here's a trick. a lot of people didn't know.
