tect. good monday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we begin debreaking news out of the east bay. all lanes in san leando have opened after a deadly crash. >> live at the scene right now with details on what happened. rick. >> reporter: yeah, this is kind of a chain reaction type of accident, but sam just hit it on the head about the traffic right now. all lanes have opened just as we arrived here, here on 880. this happened south of marina. crews cleared the wreck involving multiple vehicles that began a chain reaction of events. a vehicle with a 60-year-old

driver was traveling north on 880 was rear ended. that vehicle ended up sideways and hit by another vehicle. then a fuel tanker hit the vehicle of the 60-year-old driver who was kilded. no explosion, but several other vehicles were hit and drivers have been hospitalized. now, the crews did work fast to clear the roadway. this morning, so it is back open. nothing affecting the morning commute, but that's the latest at this location. mike has a look at what's happening throughout the rest of the bay area. >> thank you, rick. be safe out there on the shoulder there. this again is video taken from earlier. rick showed you other video. there's the crash. folks are sneaking by over on the right shoulder. the was the case for hours this morning. let's get you to the current status for the speed sensors. all lanes of 880 have reopened add marina boulevard after the deadly crash involving a number of vehicles. more folks hospitalized after the crash. we'll let you know any of the other aftermath. 580 also has slowing as folks

were making their way over. that just cleared about two minutes ago. so now we're back to an easy drive. we'll touch base on another instant, but we also have a forecast for today. >> looks pretty good out there. we're starting out can clear skies with a live look over san jose as you get ready to head out, it feels mild. our temperatures have been in the mid 50s to start out this day. as we go into this afternoon, going to see temperatures reaching into the 80s for this afternoon. we'll take a look at that and a look at the hottest day of the week. that's coming up in just a few minutes. >> all right, thank you very much, kari. 4:32 on your monday. of course, it's also monday, may 1st, which means it's a day of action across the world and the bay area. hundreds of thousands opeople gathering across the country today. that includes a full slate of protests in the bay area. here's a look at some of the may day rallies going on locally. protests as you see on the screen in san francisco, san jose, oakland, are expected to be the largest ones.

the first three items there. demonstration also taking place in mountain view, morgan hill, and concord. you can find the complete list of rallies on our website, nbcbayarea.com, and we'll have several reporters covering these throughout the day. >> we are following a developing story. a woman and dead and seven injured following a mass shooting at a san diego pool party. it happened in san diego's universal neighborhood. the shooter identified as 49-year-old peter sulease, was drinking a beer at the pool before he opened fire. he killed one woman and injured six others. one man broke his arm running away. police say the party turned into chaos. >> from the screams, you could hear that somebody or multiple people were hit. a lot of screaming. i could see everybody on the balcony just yelling, ducking down for cover. >> officers shot and killed solis when he pointed his gun at them.

no word yet on the motive. president trump is taking a lot of heat for an invitation extended to the philippines president rodrigo duterte. the president invited him to the white house during a conversation about north korea over the weekend. the move is controversial because he has overseen a deadly crackdown on drugs in his country with many saying the killings are a violation of human rights. >> uc president janet napolitano will be in the hot seat tomorrow after a state audit found her office allegedly covered up tens of millions of dollars. the new state audit reportedly found the office of the president accumulated secret reserves of $175 million. there are reports that the office also interfered with a previous audit. so the uc head is going to be facing a panel of lawmakers tomorrow. napolitano was appointed head of the university of california four years ago and tasked specifically with getting back state funding that was lost during the recession. >> mow reports this morning of a

man exposing himself to people on stanford's campus. the three victims were on the east side of campus sunday morning when a man got out of a parked car and exposed himself. then he drove off. this the second time in recent weeks police have investigated a flasher on campus. >> happening today in alameda county, the existing plastic ban is going to expand to include all retail stores, all restaurants, even food trucks. the reusable food ordinance was adopted in 2013 and intended to include grocery stores then. since the law was implements, they have found a 40% reduction in plastic. >> the portion will run from the san francisco transbay center. tonight's meeting is 5:00 at the morgan hill community center. >> oakland is kicking off small business week today. 25 events and workshops planned

throughout the week. here are a few of them happening today at city hall. at 9:00, a panel held on the role that small business plays in the city's economy, a vital role there. then at 1:00, there's another panel on finding and hiring local talent. and then at 5:00, mayor libby schaaf hosting a celebration of the legacy of family owned business. >> nervous about returning an overdue book. it's not a problem in one bay area city. where you can check out a one-time reprieve.

good morning. stock futures pointing to a higher open on wall street today. markets have been creating in a more narrow range since hitting the highs in the beginning of march. the dow and the s&p 500 gaining about 1% in april. today, investors are looking for government data on income and consumer spending. along with construction spending and april manufacturing numbers later in the morning. markets closing slightly lower on friday. the dow siccing 40 points. the nasdaq shedding one point, to 6,047. meantime, orange is the new hacked? a hacker posting unreleased

episodes from the new season of the hit series "orange is the new black" online after claiming netflix failed to meet ransom demands. netflix had plans to release the new season on june 9th. the hacker who goes by the handle dark overlord claimed to have pirated other shows. >> the eighth fast and furious film racing past the $1 billion mark and holding the top spot in the box office for the third wi week in a row. it's the thirdth in history to hit the milestone. the sales more than $800 million, have come from overseas. back to you. >> i think the made $19 million in the u.s. >> i haven't seen any of them. >> that's a lot of binge watching there. 4:40 right now. san jose library wants those long lost books back. i have been busy reading, and checking them out for too long. but they're willing to forgive. >> how long have you been

reading those for? the library announced late fees will be waived starting today in a first ever fine forgiveness program. so your library dent gone if you return it this month. the program runs for the entire month of may. borrowers can return books, dvds, cds, i guess we're still using those, and any other raw materials no matter how long they have been in your house. >> miles of southern california coastline shut down this morning. the violent attack that left a single mother of three fighting for her life this morning.

deadly storms tore through texas on saturday. holy cow. >> holy cow is right. deadly storms tore through texas on saturday. at least four people were killed and more than 50 hurt in the small town of canton. >> it was not just texas. throughout 16 different states, violent storms have killed about a dozen people. there could be more to come as well. the national weather service says there were four confirmed tornadoes just in texas. powerful winds ripping trees from the ground, demolishing homes and businesses. >> power, water is something people underestimate. so it is scary when it's taking people's homes. >> well, people right now try to recover what's left. they're also preparing for another round of violent storms that may be on the way as well. >> not the case in our neck of the woods at all. really coming off a glorious weekend across the bay area. quite warm. >> it was quite warm.

definitely pool weather, heading to the beach or trying to do something to stay cool. that's the weather we'll have. what do you mean? >> mid week, aren't we getting up to 90 degrees? just wait. >> it's going to be hot for the next couple days. here's a live look outside at san francisco, and an all clear start as you get ready to head out on this monday morning. we also have fairly mild temperatures. 57 in oakland, palo alto, and san jose. in livermore now at 53. also 53 in fairfield. dropping down to the upper 40s in parts of the north bay. we're looking at very warm weather for the south bay. milpitas, up to 82 degrees. morgan hill, 85, gilroy today reaching 87 degrees. we're up to 82 in hayward, walnut creek, 87, and antioch will see a high of 86 degrees. also looking at some 70s and 80s for the peninsula. palo alto, 82 degrees, and 75 in

the outer sunset, while the north bay will be up to 89 degrees in sonoma. looking add the hiking trails in the south bay or going to the park, it will be a mild start with some sunshine. we keep the sunshine and it will be all dry, but then the temperatures heating up into the mid to upper 80s. so looking outside, trying to figure out how to prepare for the day, it will be a day for accessories, meaning the sun block, sunglasses. maybe some flip-flops too and also a t-shirt and some shorts, as our temperatures will be very warm throughout the day. so that's exactly what you need to be prepared for today and the next couple days as well. the pollen count has been really high for trees and grasses right now. and you can probably tell. you don't need me to tell you that. if you're allergic to pine and cedar, that may be really aggravating you right now. if you want to spend the day heading to santa cruz, if you're looking for cooler temperatures, you won't find it here. it will be very warm. but of course, the water will be nice and cool. our temperatures reaching into

the upper 80s today. and it will be a very nice one. up to 78 degrees for san francisco. and it will be the warmest on wednesday. wednesday will be the peak of the heat, especially inland, we'll be hitting 90 degrees and it will come back down with breezy winds and then look at how the temperatures cool for the weekend. rain stays just to the north of us. so that will help give us a little bit of relief here. as we head to mike, checking in on a crash now in oakland. >> the one in san leandro had cleared off 880. the one on highway 13 now is an issue as you travel through piedmont and oakland. look at the speed sensors, no surprise for 4:47. still light as far as traffic flow. we saw slowing around lincoln. sounds like a deer was hit in the roadway. now crews have arrived and sounds like they have reopened lanes. i'll track that as well as the rest of the commute, including the rails. b.a.r.t. reporting all trains on time. sam told you about the may day

being thanked to the work of beachgoers nearby. she was swimming in the being in san diego county when a shark bit her in the thigh on saturday. people nearby immediately rushed in to try to get her on shore to stop the bleeding. >> used the tourniquet and brought her to shore as quickly as possible, with as many people as wood possibly could and get as many towels and apply direct pressure to the wound to try to isolate it. >> her mother set up a go fund me page saying she's a single mother of three. she's expected to go through several surgeries and a lengthy recovery after. >> our thoughts and prayers with her throughout that. >> coming up, we investigate. a former worker at the hunter point shipyard is blowing the whistle on possible radiation again. we investigate the navy's response to allegations about contamination near new construction. first, though, happening right now, 4:49 on your monday morning. within the last half hour,

spacex did launch another rocket. the original one was scrubbed on sunday. there is special significance for this launch. it represents the first time that spacex is doing business with the dod. plus, the new deal for hollywood riters. the writers guild of america appears to have an agreement in the works that would averta strike. we're back with more news in two minutes.

today. kari hall tracking it all with her full weather forecast at the top of the next hour. >> all right, more questions this morning about the cleanup of the hunter's naval point shipyard. it's slated for new development. >> our investigative unit examines new allegations of radiation at the shipyard again, calling into question claimed by federal officials that the land is clean. >> good morning. a former worker tells us he detected an elevated level of a radioactive element on an area of the shipyard where he didn't expect to find it. he says his baas told him to keep quiet about it. now, this is back in 2009. the land in question now belongs to the city of san francisco and is closed to new construction. you may remember this whistle blower. he first revealed to nbc bay area claims that supervisors ordered workers to switch contaminated soil samples with clean ones. claims later confirmed, but a nuclear regulatory commission. he told the feds about a hot

the u.s. army. some of the trucks moving through the area, many protests were arrested. as we pass that 100-day threshold here, 4:55 on your monday, vice president mike pence says that president trump has signed more bills during his first 100 days than any other president since harry truman. pence made those comments on "meet the press" yesterday. the fact here, trump has signed twathd bills. that is more than every president going back 70 years. but most political pundits say those bills that trump signed mostly aren't significant, as they only call for reviews of existing laws. star wars fans, there's a new collector's item just in time to celebrate the release of the first film. >> and it's gold. this is a darth vader mask made of gold that goes on sale today in japan. how would you like that for your personal collection? the life-sized mask will be up for sale for more than a million bucks. it is a 24-karat gold mask that was created by a tokyo gold

and here in the bay area -- happening today, may day rallies across the world and certainly here in the bay area. thousands are expected to fight for workers rights and many will be protesting against president trump's policies. plus, lawmakers settling on a hard fought $1 trillion spending bill. government shutdown avoided. and as we take a live look outside at san francisco, at the bay bridge, it starts out nice and mild, but it will be really heating up as we go through today. today in the bay continues now. good monday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us.

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. it's like somebody flipped a switch on may 1st. may 1st or august 1st? in the 90s at some point this week? >> going to feel like summertime the next couple days, like we're in the middle of summer but then we have a break and it cools down as we head to the end of the week. we'll talk about all of that coming up. let me get you out the door as we take a look across the bay area. three of our microclimates there in the peninsula and the tri-valley, we start in the 50s. 52 right now in the north bay, while san francisco is at 56 degrees. highs this afternoon reaching into the upper 80s for the tri-valley and south bay. a look at the peninsula. it's going to be up to 82 degrees, and san francisco up to 78. and 80 in the north bay. we'll take a look ahead to the hottest day of the week and when it cools down. that's all coming up in about eight minutes. heading over to mike now, a crash on the bay bridge? >> on the bridge. a major concern, but it's

eastbound coming down the decline, and the flashing lights we saw mostly cleared as folks are heading into oakland. out on the map, not a lot of slowing on the speed sensors there. no problems getting off the bay bridge toll plaza and heading westbound into the city. that's the bulk of the morning commute which is just getting started. a smooth drive for the rest of the sensors including san leandro. you had earlier activity, we were very concerned about that. still following that. >> new this morning that we're covering an early-morning crash, killed one man and blocked northbound laneoffs 880 in san leandro. it all started when a ford fusion hit a honda with enough force to send it into the center divide. a buick struck the honda, causing it to side swipe a big rig. the honda driver died at the scene, the buick driver was taken to the hospital. all lanes are just reopened after 4:00 a.m. >> 5:00 on the dot right now and a very busy morning already for san jose police who are
