with a live look at the golden gate bridge. some )golden rays ) will be a very good tuesday morning to you. taking a live look outside at the golden gate bridge. golden rays touching the bay area as conditions will once again feel a little more like summer than spring. today in the bay starts right now. we welcome you on this tuesday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. a lot of people last night were going to have the air conditioning systems cranking. it was hot last night. >> it's going to be hot again today. even hotter in some spots. we're looking at temperatures inland reaching into the 90s with a lot of sunshine. as we start out this morning. it's very mild. it's 63 degrees. we start out in the 60s, you know it's going to be a very warm day. we're already at 64 in

fairfield, 59 in napa, and 63 degrees in palo alto. highs this afternoon reaching the low 90s for concord and livermore. 90 in san jose and morgan hill, and san francisco up to 82 degrees. it will be hot again tomorrow. we'll talk about that and the chance of setting new records coming up. as we head over to mike, a very quiet start out on the roadways. >> yes, yesterday had a lot of activity in the east bay. today, we're hoping for a much quieter drive for 880. so far, clear. we're on the peninsula for this incident that's reported. one of the only ones we're tracking is northbound 101, embarcadero road. car went off the roadway, no major injuries. even if it was in the roadway, light, light traffic. back to you. >> thank you. >> we'll start with breaking news we have been following overnight. flames break out on a south bay high school campus. >> kris sanchez live in san jose with a closer look at some of the aftermath there and the investigation now under way. good morning. >> good morning to you.

you can see that the snack shack or the concession stand here at branm high school appears to be a total loss. if you look at the bottom of the doorway there, that is where firefighters tell us they believe that the fire started, and for that reason, because started outside on the stoop at the base of the door, they consider that the fire is suspicious. crews arrived here on scene around 2:30 this morning and were here for about an hour. only took about ten minutes to put fire out, but they do some mop-up duty and were watching for hot spots to make sure nothing spread to the buildings, which are pretty close to the snack shack. the firefighters were here on scene for about an hour. branham baseball team had a baseball game yesterday afternoon, they have another this afternoon. we are reaching out to branham high school leaders as well as the campbell union district leaders to see if they know anything more than what we're able to tell you at this point. again, a total loss of the snack shack, which means a loss of

revenue, because as we all know as sports parents, that's where the team often makes a lot of their money. en san jose, kris sanchez. >> i worked the snack shack this weekend. you're so right. thank you so much. >> 4:33. a milpitas family force said outside of their home by an overnight fire. this happened about 2:00 in the morning. that home near milpitas high school. you can see some people inside of the house shaken up were able to get outside. there they are standing with their blankets and huddling together. we're still waiting for more details on how the fire started. >> watch your step. the weather is getting warmer so snakes are coming back out. a rattlesnake bit a san jose man while he was climbing mission peak in fremont yesterday. he was on the trail with his wife, took a seat on a rock, and that's when the snake bit him. a chp chopper was nearby and was able to rescue him. >> he was a 47-year-old male from san jose who went to sit down after hiking on the peak,

and he put his hand down and was bitten by a rattlesnake. >> the bite was bad enough he had to be taken to washington hospital, one of the few places with antivenom medicine for snake bite victims. >> question this morning the going to be weighed. should five east bay schools be allowed to split from their current school districts and form a new one? the kaunlt raw costa board of education is taking that issue today. there's a push to separate high schools from the mt. diablo unified district. backers of the plan say the district has ignored the needs of the schools, but they say they're against the plan, saying it's a plan to carve out the most affluent segment of the districts. regardless of what the county decides, the state will have the final say. >> the accused oikos university shooter will be back in an oakland courtroom for a plea

hearing. it's continuation from last week. back in april, one goh was found mentally comp tnltd to stand trial for killing seven people in a 2012 mass shooting. last month also marked the fifth anniversary of that shooting. concerns still over an unstable hillside is causing an indefinite road closure in the east bay. the road just north of highway 84 has been closed to all traffic. the hillside started sliding in heavy rains in january. the road, of course, connects interstate 58 with niles canyon road. crews found unstable boulders and debris on the roadside. it's expected to rin main closed until at least june. >> a 24-hour business network and a tech show. how twitter is using a flood of live streams to turn around its prospects. >> and a live look outside right now at palo alto and 101.

tech leading gains in monday's session, and president donald trump said he was thinking about breaking the banks up. stocks did rebound later in the day. the dow sinking 27 points. 20,913 to finish the session. the nasdaq at a record high, up 44 points to 6,091. and shares of apple hitting an all-time high on monday ahead of its quarterly earnings report. the tech giant ending the day's session at $146.60. the staug now up more than 25% so far this year and 60% since its recent low in may of 2016. the company is scheduled to report earnings after markets close this afternoon. >> twitter doubling down on live streaming. 12 new video deals ranging from news to sports to entertainment. all at a presentation in new york on monday. the ceo telling the audience he wanted twitter to be, quote, the first place that anyone hears of anything that's going on that

path will s a very good tuesday morning to you. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza this morning. that's where the new bike path will be open soon. the cars making their way by right now. not a lot of traffic so far. today is the grand opening of the new vista point facility for bicyclists. the new path will be available every day instead of just the weekends. caltrans blocks this part of the bridge during construction due to heavy diesel fumes and smoke from demlution crews. you don't want to breathe that in when you're trying to be healthy. >> just want the fresh air. that path is 2.2 miles long. >> who is counting? >> i'm very precise. five miles is about all the time i want to spend on a bike today given how hot it will be. >> you don't want to be bike riding or jogging during the

hottest hours of the day, between 2:00 and 6:00. look at these temperatures to start out, nice and refreshing as we're now at 63 degrees in the peninsula and south bay. looking live at the tri-valley, and pleasanton at 60 degrees, and 62 degrees from the north bay. a mild start, but then it will be really heating up today. feeling like summertime. we're up to 90 degrees in the south bay. the peninsula up to 89 degrees. and 92 in the tri-valley. while we're also seeing 92 in the north bay, san francisco will be at 82 degrees. we do have a chance of setting some new records today. in spots, where we will be seeing the hot temperatures like napa, the forecast is 93, and the record is 93. san francisco will be up to 82, but the record is at 88 degrees. just to give you an idea of where we normally stand for this time of year, we're usually in the low 70s, especially for the inland areas, but we're up into the 80s and 90s today, and may be close to that record in

livermore, but i don't think we'll set a new record there. it is dpoil to be very hot, nonetheless, as we get a live look outside at san francisco and you're standing in the closet thinking, how do i prepare for this day? it's a day for sunglasses and flip-flops and also you will have the need for a t-shirt and shorts. one of those days, once again, and again tomorrow as well. but then we'll be putting on more layers as we go thru the week, as the temperatures cool down. looking at a high in san francisco today up to 82 degrees. 76 degrees tomorrow. and there will be a weak onshore flow, at least to knock down the temperatures along the coastline. then for the inland areas, it will still be hot tomorrow, but then we'll finally start to see more refreshs breezes through the end of the week and maybe even a few spotty showers. we'll talk more about that. mike is giving us the all clear on the peninsula. >> we had that crash in palo alto, but that has cleared from the roadside, so no more incidents to report on the road. let's take to the rails.

no problems here. 28 trains for b.a.r.t., no major problems. b.a.r.t. scheduled closure will be in place for the lake merritt station this weekend. i'll put a link to that, that's saturday and sunday. let's get out to waze and talk about a drive that a lot of folks may be making. castro valley to the south bay. sunnyvale and mountain view. right now, this is one of the only times we see them recommending 237 down 880. oftentimes they'll recommend dumbarton bridge. by they, i mean waze. you see the travel times on the side here, and they correspondent to the colored routes. they'll give you a number of options on your cell phone so even without me, but why would you do without me, but without me, you can go to your phone and click on the app and pick up the magnifying glass at the bottom of the app and click on your profile. you get an opportunity to select the team to join. we hope you select the nbc bay area wazer. we hope you join that team on the roadway so we can share that

information. makes us much more powerful to help each other. >> and the team is not complete without you, mike. thank you very much. >> 4:47 on urtuesday morning. string of side shows in san jose over the weekend have left behind a lot more than tire marks. this video shows dozens of cars doing burnouts and doughnuts in a parking lot near city hall. you also see all the smoke from that. this was all part of an early cinco de mayo celebration. at least three shows were reported in all. another at san jose plaza forced businesses there to shut down early. >> they were doing burnouts up and down the parking lot. a little scary. a lot of kids here celebrating with their families. ended umthe police had to come in, shut down the plaza, and we ended up closing business. >> well, san jose police say they have not made any arrests in connection to the sideshows. >> the sonoma county jail is limiting cooperation with immigration and customs enforce officials or i.c.e. according to the press democrat, the county sheriff imposed the new restrictions yesterday.

the goal is to protect undocumented immigrants with minor violations. jail will continue to provide i.c.e. with information about violent felons. the sheriff took the action at the urging of the county's independent law enforcement auditor. another pull back from the trump administration. 4:49 right now. it's looking to cut back on some of the obama administration's healthy food initiatives. the obama administration regulated stricter nutritional values for school meals including more fruits and veggies. some schools reported the rules were costly and kids were throwing away the food. the trump administration announced it was rolling back the regulations. secretary of agriculture said schools will have more flexibility. >> meals can't be nutritious if they aren't consumed, if they're put in the trash. >> the big losers are the children who will have less healthful meals. >> the new guidelines are going into effect this fall.

a live look this morning right now at san rafael and the s-curve, not too busy on the roads so far this morning, but certainly expecting things to pick up in a little bit. mike is keeping close track of what's going on on the roadways. >> placing an end to an end, they would stretch from san francisco to new york city and back. we're talking about 13,000 miles of levees in california. and our investigative unit has discovered more than half of them remain at high risk of failure. >> senior investigative reporter stephen stock is here to tell us what that could mean for all of us living here in the bay area. >> well, good morning, guys. you know, seepage, erosion, earthquakes, and yes, even road nlts are all posing a threat to california's levee system. that's according to this latest report put out by the state of california. according to this report, about half of the levees that protect california's cities from major flooding do not meet modern day standards. that's because most of the levees were built in the 1800s. and have not been properly

maintained or modernized since. if a levee were to break in the wrong place, it could be catastrophic for all of us here in the bay area. we wanted to see the problem firsthand, so we went out with officials from the state department of water resources and took a tour of the most vulnerable levee s on the sacramento delta. a levee fall yir there could cut off water supplies to the bay area. two thirds of the drinking whater for the bay area and southern california traveled through aqueduct systems guarded by these very levees. according to a five-year survey, 60% of all nonurban levees are at high risk of failure from underseepage, structural instability, and erosion. that's about 1230 miles of levees at high risk of failure. the cost to fix all of this, an estimated $3 billion. that's billion with a "b." to learn more about what the

thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. a bunch of expensive seats, too. if you can score one. all right. kari has a look at our forecast for today. spring-like temperatures continue? >> summer-like temperatures indeed. pushing near record highs today. in parts of the bay area, we're talking about 90s inland. but we're going back to winter this weekend. so just a little bit of a note there that things won't stay this way. it's now 60 degrees as you step out the door in oakland, 63 in palo alto and san jose and 58 already in san francisco with highs there reaching 82 degrees. 90s for the north bay and spots like concord and livermore as well as the south bay. palo alto today up to 89 degrees. we'll talk about when we get a break from this heat coming up in a few minutes. mike starts us out with what's happening in oakland. >> things look pretty calm all around the bay, as you would expect. tuesday, we expect heavier volume than yesterday, but we'll see how things pan out. the approach toward 980 heading
