metropolitan museum of art. there are celebrities waking up planning next year's outfit. >> pretty amazing. meanwhile, how about the video at the top of the show. people on planes need to sit down and fasten their seat belts. >> this was a wild scene on a passenger plane. as you saw, a fight broke out, just ahead of a flight from tokyo to los angeles. this video emerging, as some of the top airlines executives are about to face questions on capitol hill today about the state of their industry. tom costello covers aviation. he has the latest on all of it. good morning. >> reporter: it's happening nearly every day. something happens on an aircraft and fellow passengers grab their cell phone and start recording. this morning, an all-out fight. one passenger charged with assault. this morning, another disturbing airline incident caught on camera. two passengers throwing punches at each other, on a flight about

to depart from tokyo to l.a. >> this guy is crazy. >> reporter: the passengers started fighting after the man in the red shirt, who was reportedly drunk, was asked to leave the plane after acting in an unruly manner. the man resisted and chaos ensued. after the fight seems to be over, the man in red returns, taking another punch to the face, before the video abruptly ends. the passenger who took the video tells nbc news, the man in red yelled, you think i'm crazy? the government is crazy, before leaving the plane. it's the latest in a series of viral videos. a united passenger dragged off a plane in chicago. an american flight attendant nearly coming to blows with a customer in san francisco. >> i am being asked to leave the plane. i had to use the restroom. >> reporter: and a delta passenger removed from a flight for using the rest rook, after being told to be seated. some top airline executives will get a grilling today, with members of congress suggesting

it may be time to pass a new passenger bill of rights. >> passengers have inadequate compensation and recourse for the clueless and careless misconduct of the airline. >> reporter: it was just last week that united ceo oscar munoz told lester holt the industry needs to recover. >> we have a black eye. >> reporter: many airlines announced policy changes. no longer involuntarily bumping seated passengers. offering more cash as an incentive, up to $10,000. southwest says it will stop overbooking flights. meanwhile, with 83% of seats full, flight attendants say the entire flight experience can be stressful. >> people are spending little for these tickets. they're getting packed in a confined space. humans are closer together and it creates conflicts. >> reporter: with so few airlines to choose among, passenger rights

advocates are skeptical anything will change. >> i think we're stuck with that for a while until someone comes up with a new way of approaching the public. >> reporter: this morning, passenger rights advocates and unions say recent incidents are symptomatic of an industry running near capacity, under strain, and passengers who are often just fed up and sometimes, as you saw, drunk. savannah, matt, back to you. >> still can't get over that video. tom, thank you very much. an interesting phone call taking place at the white house between president trump and russia's president, vladimir putin. it's their first direct conversation, since trump declared relations between the two countries at an all-time low. kristen welker has more on all of this. good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, matt. good morning to you. it is high stakes for that call today. with president trump and president putin, expected to discuss a range of topics from syria to the fight against isis. it comes as mr. trump has set off alarm bells for comments

regarding some of the most brutal dictators, including kim jong-un. tensions mountsing with that country today amid reports that north korean state tv saying the situation in the peninsula is being driven to a point "close to nuclear war because of the united states' recent provocations." this morning, white house officials will confirm that president trump will speak with russian president vladimir putin on the phone. it's the third call between the two leaders since mr. trump took office in january. and the first since the recent air strikes in syria. that strike, linked to a suspected chemical attack of bashar al assad, was criticized by putin. striving to salvage ties amid a fierce dispute over syria, secretary of state rex tillerson met with the president last month. >> there's a law level of trust between our two countries. the world's two foremost nuclear powers can not have this kind of relationship. >> reporter: today, as trump is

facing backlash about other world leaders. saying he would meet with kim jong-un. if i would be appropriate for me to meet with him, i would absolutely, i would be honored to do with it. just hours earlier, his own chief of staff said the opposite. >> the answer is not. i don't see that happening. >> reporter: under fire, press secretary sean spicer forced to explain why meeting with kim jong-un would be an honor. >> he is a head of state. there's a diplomatic piece. >> reporter: overnight, backlash from some of his republican republicans. >> what you do is a legitimize a person who is one of the really bad actors in the world. >> reporter: and the president surprised some officials of his own administration by inviting another brutal dictator to the white house, philippines president rodrigo duterte. one topic on the agenda, north korea's recent provocations.

that invitation, despite wide condemnation of duterte for executing thousands of his own suspects in his own country. >> does the president have a thing with the totalitarian leaders? >> the president understands the threat that they pose. >> reporter: it's not just foreign policy. this morning the president is threatening a shutdown in the fall tweeting, "either elect more republican senators in 2018 or change the rules to 51%. our country needs a good shutdown in september to fix mess." matt, savannah? >> kristen welker, thanks. may day protests turned violent in portland, oregon, last night. protesters throwing molotov cocktails and other items at police officers. the group of self-described anarchists also set fires in the streets. multiple people were arrested

and downtown businesses were damaged, including a police car which was destroyed. in the meantime, speaking of protests, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of paris to protest marine le pen. demonstrators there threw molotov cocktails at security three officers and several protesters were injured. we're learning more about the university of texas student accused of going on a stabbing rampage on the austin campus. the suspect surrendering to police after killing one person and injuring three others. nbc's kerry sanders has the latest on the investigation. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, matt. there are many heavy hearts here on the campus at the university of texas, where classes are expected to resume today. the president of the college canceled classes after a freshman was knifed to death, in what witnesses say was an unprovoked attack. beefed up patrols on campus at the university of texas in austin.

students anxious and confused by 19-year-old harrison brown's killing. the freshman was stabbed to death in broad daylight on a busy campus plaza. >> i am a little bit of mad. >> reporter: jeffery haslet has been best friends with the victim since they were in day care. >> he was funny, outgoing. he was a friend to everybody. >> reporter: harrison brown, killed. three others slashed by the attacker. >> one white male college student. he's been stabbed a couple of times. he is conscious. >> reporter: police say this man, another u.t. student, inexplicably went berserk monday. witnesses say at first, the stabbing spree seemed unreal. >> he grabbed this guy by the shoulder and stabbed him in the back. >> reporter: as video posted on social media shows, campus police wrestled the suspect to the ground. officials say the arrest coming two minutes after the police were first called. in custody this morning,

21-year-old kendrex white. still unclear, a motive. >> the individual didn't attack people that were right there. he walked a little ways. then he stabbed another individual and so forth. >> reporter: one classmate of the alleged knife-wielding attacker said he noticed a personality shift after white was arrested for a dui for last month. >> he was missing from class for a month. he was pretty depressed. >> reporter: harrison brown's former school district remembering him this morning, as an inspiration to everyone around him. one of the wounded was admitted to the hospital and treated over. the other two were treated and released. later this morning, the police say the suspect who is in charge is charged with, among other things, murder. matt? >> thank you very much. with the summer vacation season just ahead, the state department has issued a traveling alert covering all of europe. it says americans should be on guard for

terrorist attacks, especially in tourist spots, transportation centers, hotels, clubs and houses of worship. it applies to great britain sweden and russia. it advises travelers to have a plan for contacting family members in an emergency and says they should monitor local news reports, check the websites of u.s. embassies and consulates for any security updates. there is more news at fox news. stephanie gosk is here with the latest on this. >> reporter: first, the network's chairman and ceo, roger ailes. then, star anchor, bill o'reilly. now, the co-president of fox news, bill shine, has called it quits. pushed out amid criticism of his handling of the sexual harassment scandal. shine, who replaced roger ailes, as head of the network

was forced out after mounting pressure on fox to change its corporate culture. with three big names now gone, fox may never be the same. this morning, another shakeup at fox news. co-president bill shine resigning as the network scrambles to deal with a string of negative headlines about sexual harassment. in a recent tweet, one of shine's most high-profile defenders, sean hannity, responded to reports that shine was being pushed out. saying, i pray this is not true because if it is, that's the total end of the fox news channel as we know it. overnight on his show, hannity stayed silent about shine and not addressing rumors after his own potential departure from the network. >> special thank you to all our friends in the media that are tuning in tonight, maybe for the first time. >> reporter: shine's departure may signal a makeover for the network. >> after roger ailes left, shine was a continuation of the old fox news culture. the murdochs are slowly deciding they need to answer critics by turning a page.

>> reporter: in a memo to staff, 21st century fox chairman and ceo rupert murdoch wrote in part, i know bill was respected and liked by everybody at fox news. but some former employees might disagree. shine has not been accused of sexual harassment. but has been named in two lawsuits against the network and roger ailes. >> i'm andrea -- >> reporter: one of ailes accusers claims that shine told her when she complained that ailes was a very powerful man, and she needed to let this one go. shine denies all of the accusations. now, his replacement is a woman, suzanne scott. >> she is a product of the roger ailes culture. women at fox news are looking at this moment and saying, this is not cleaning house. >> reporter: 21st century fox is in the middle of a bid for british broadcaster, sky, worth tens of millions of dollars.

industry insiders believe the recent departures at fox news are at least partly driven by the desire to get the takeover by the british government. among the criteria is whether or not the company is fit and proper. >> steph, thank you very much. >> you're welcome. >> thank you. now, to a real-life hollywood cliff-hanger. a writers strike averted overnight. the writers guild reached a three-year deal. it was announced an hour after the midnight deadline. the agreement prevents a costly strike that could have sent television shows to immediate reruns. here's important news for parents this morning. the trump administration now rolling back some school lunch rules that had been championed by former first lady michelle obama. the program required more fruits, veggies, and whole grains, but many school districts were complaining that healthy foods were ending up in the trash. under the new standard, schools won't have to cut the salt in meals just yet. they will keep the whole grain requirements and not demand that all pastas and breads go whole

grain. schools could serve 1% milk instead of the nonfat required. these new rules will take effect in the fall. an update on what has been a traffic nightmare for commuters in atlanta. transportation officials say they're confident that the i-85 bridge that went up in flames back in march will be reopened by memorial day weekend. the initial completion date was supposed to be mid-june. the 24/7 work schedule is being credited for accelerating the progress in construction. a light moment from the nba playoffs. cavs superstar lebron james almost started celebrating a little early. cleveland up in the third quarter. lebron grabs a bottle of beer from a court side waitress. about to take a sip. remembers he's still on the job. gives it back. still on the job. the cavs go on to beat the raptors. 116-105. plenty of time to tip one back after the game. cleveland takes a 1-0 lead in that series. >> i love how he was scampering

-- in the next 24 hours, we will see another area of rain develop. some areas picking up an inch and a half to two inches of rain across southern kansas. a second storm system will regenerate. we're going to see two different areas. one up near st. louis, where we could see three to four or five inches of rain. and along the gulf coast. we could see another three to four inches of rain. that will be mostly as we go into wednesday and thursday. that's the weather across the country. your local forecast is coming up in the next 30 seconds. even when we're not there to keep them safe, our subaru outback will be. 56 in napa, and pal ohio starts out the morning at 63 degrees, and expect a high temperature of 89 degrees in the peninsula. south up to 90, tri-valley 90 there as well. some of the hottest temperatures will be in the delta and the interior parts of the north bay before we catch a little bit of a break. let's head over to mike for an update on the commute. >> we have a tough ride on the rails right now. northbound trains for caltrain are delayed 5 to 15 minutes out of diridon. the worst of the delays is 15 minutes. in the south bay, worst delays for your drive, northbound 101, a crash remains in the middle lanes. been there almost a half hour. and so we do have a backup out of san jose. 280 picking up some of the extra traffic, and north 85 at the bottom of the screen, a crash in the shoulder just north of 87. >> we'll be back with another local news update for you in about a half hoar or so. have a great tuesday morning.

flipped over in rising floodwaters. this morning, we're hearing from that family and the people who saved them. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in dallas. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. first, some very good news. one of the two young children trapped inside that submerged car has been discharged here from medical center dallas. the other remains in intensive care but she is now breathing on her own. her parents and rescuers sharing a special bond. this morning, phillip and emily are thankful. thankful they and their two children survived this harrowing nightmare, when their pickup truck flipped over in a raging flood. >> water was coming in the cab of the truck. >> you can't see anything. you panic. >> reporter: grateful, beyond words for good samaritans like jaime martinez, who rushed to the rescue.

we have another round of storms that will start forming later as we go into wednesday. houston over new orleans and southern mississippi. that's the area where we could see a slight risk of stronger storms tomorrow. the biggest threat will be for isolated hail and damaging wind gusts, with an isolated tornado possible. you start to see the heavier rain work back into eastern kansas and oklahoma. and move back into the midwest, where flooding has been an issue for several days. that's going to exacerbate the flooding and the rivers there. more of the rain will head into southern indiana and illinois. across kentucky and into tennessee, too. today, though, things are fairly quiet across most of the country. a little gusty through the ohio river valley. it is going to be a hot one in the southwest. in the northeast, spotty good morning. i'm meteorologist kari hall. a lot of sunshine and very warm

vo a suspicious overnight fire destroyes a snack shack at following up on a story we have within covered all morning. a fire at a snack shack. the fire started about 2:30 this morning. a firefighter tells nbc bay area it seems the fire started at the base of the door outside and that's why they are considering this a suspicious fire. investigation continues right now. we are also learning someone broke into the structure last week. snack shacks are a key source of revenue to support athletic programs and we will bring you updates on the story. mike inouye tracking problems for cal transriders. >> we have delays up and down the peninsula. before there were signal problems for northbound trains.

temperatures are going to quickly warm up as we go through the day with a lot of sunshine and not much of a wind until this afternoon. in san francisco, expect a high of 82 degrees, and in some spots we may be close to setting some new records. livermore, expecting a high of

90 there. also a high of 90 in san jose, morgan hill and concord. napa, 93. santa rosa, a high of 92. one more hot day before the cooldown comes. we're looking at the dumbarton bridge but it has been a slower drive westbound for much of the morning. anywhere north of there continuing to clear up, moving slowly through the maze. much more smoothly across the dumbarton bridge. no crashes reported, just a tough drive. the rest of the south bay builds -- clears to san jose. happening now, the new bay bridge bike pass is open seven days a week for riders instead of just on the weekends.
