5:00 am
take vta. you're watching today in the bay. and you're watching today in the bay on a friday. good morning. thank you so much for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> everything is a little brighter on a friday. >> that's true. >> even if we're tired. it's 5:00 right now. good morning to you. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> let's get the friday forecast. it's a little more misty than the thursday one. >> welcome to spring. it's back. >> will there be flowers? >> we kicked summer out the door. >> we sure did. i am so over summer already. so we're going to go back to spring with some cooler temperatures, but that also comes along with some clouds. we're seeing them right now as we look live over san francisco and the temperature now is at 54, heading up to 64 today. let me show you what to expect with drizzle and clouds in san francisco and along the coast this morning. it will be a windy day. so hold on to your hats. we will have those gusts up to 40 miles per hour, and then there will be some spotty rain this weekend.
5:01 am
we'll talk about when and where that's coming up in about eight minutes. mike now has a crash for san jose drivers. >> i do. we were looking at the south bay, and southbound 101, just by the airport, around brokaw exit, had reports of a disabled vehicle. that was going be my report, bus then we heard about a crash. it sounds like in total four vehicles involved. now there's a call for an ambulance. it sounds like it's in the middle lanes over the last few minutes. that will be an issue. we'll track that closely. i'll show you the slowing and let you know about conditions that change. so far, by the bay bridge, it's fine for the travel times. back to you. >> thank you so much. >> we're following breaking news out east where we're getting reports now that a cargo plane has crashed at a small airport in west virginia. right now, local media in charleston, west virginia, are reporting it's a u.p.s. plane that crashed after going off the runway at the charleston airport there. apparent lay, there were several people onboard when it went off

5:03 am
pieces together. >> the defense has tried to argue that sierra lamar was not abducted five years ago on the way to her school bus stop in morgan hill, that instead she ran away and is still alive. during the three-week trial, the prosecution presented evidence of garcia torres's dna on her clothes, which happened to be found in a field in morgan hill, and her dna in his car. the jury is expected to take several days to deliberate and come back with a verdict. if they find garcia torres guilty, they then must decide whether or not to sentence him to death. if the verdict is not guilty, garcia torres could never be tried again in lamar's death, even if there's new evidence. bob redell, today in the bay. new this morning, a woman is rushed to the hospital after being hit by a mustang on the peninsula. here's some new video of that scene just in to our newsroom. this happened on el camino real. we do not have word on the victim's condition. now to a tragic story that
5:04 am
we have been covering since yesterday morning. this right here is a picture of the san jose couple gunned down inside their home in the willow glen neighborhood of san jose by their daughter's ex-boyfriend. the husband was a vice president of engineering at juniper networks in sunnyvale, and that couple, as we mentioned, was killed inside their home late wednesday night in an ordeal that lasted well into thursday morning. police say the 24-year-old shot and killed the couple and then took the couple's 13-year-old son hostage. that's when police officers arrived and shot him. he didn't survive. there was a possible advanced warning on his instagram page from a couple weeks ago. he wrote, quote, no mercy on the ones that love you most. san jose police chief eddy garcia said he waw upset over a recent breakup. >> dealing with someone who is mentally ill, who had choices. and he didn't give this family choices. he didn't give my officer a
5:05 am
choice. >> that couple had an older son in the house as well at the time of the shooting. he was able to get out. he's the one who called 911 and reached police. his former girlfriend was not at house at the time. >> it's 5:05. new details to share with you. you may recall a protest last month in berkeley that got out of hand at civic center park. now, police are asking for your help identifying three people. they say are wanted for assault stemming from that protest. protesters on both sides clashed. one video clip showed a protester being punched in the face. now, police arrested 20 people that day. take a look at these photos we have been showing you here. 11 were injured. they could certainly use your help. >> 5:05. scary mom nlts at the north concart b.a.r.t. station after police say a man tried to rob a rider and threatened to killham. the suspect approached him and asked for money. the suspect said he had a gun
5:06 am
and made threatening comments. the man was arrested and it turns out he was already banned by b.a.r.t. >> changes could be coming to vta as the agency dealed with a budget shortfall. its board voted on a proposal to overall services and that could mean cutting back on routes. kris sanchez joins us with what those changes could mean for riders. >> reporter: good morning. some of these changes appear to be in the spirit of if you build it, they will come. that is going to be a pretty expensive gamble. we did confirm with a spokesperson for vta that the vote that happened last night was indeed unanimously to make those pretty pricey changes. in the interest of improving service and drawing riders back to vta, you may notice the changes as well. the transit agency is trying to rebuild at the same time it's dealing with a budget shortfall of more than $21 million. here's the board's plan that was passed unanimously. vta changes are expected to include a 50 cents hike over the next two years in fares.
5:07 am
more service to the downtown area and to the east side where ridership is growing. and reduced service south county, including gilroy and the west valley where ridership is on the decline. now, bus service will be elimnalted from free minute to sunnyvale and also into mountain view and other areas. if those changes don't draw people back to the rails, that could mean more cars and more traffic for you, even if you are a driver and you commute as well. coming up at 6:00, we'll show you who these changes could impact the most. in milpitas, kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> we'll look forward to checking back in with you. >> to washington, d.c. where president trump and house republicans are enjoying their big health care victory this morning. yesterday in a vote along party lines, the gop passed a new health care bill. the legislation now heads to the senate where it faces a tougher challenge. the senate may not get to the act for months. republicans say the bill will lower premiums but allow options to raise premiums on the sick.
5:08 am
president trump says he's fulfilling a campaign promise. >> this is a repeal and a replace of obamacare, make no mistake about it. >> this vote will be tattooed to them as i also said, they will glow in the dark. >> nancy pelosi adding that 24 million americans will lose their health care if the bill becomes a law. that comes from the cbo report from the first health care bill, that 24 million projection. 5:08 right now. live to san jose. does the air in the bay area seem healthier to you? apparently, it is. they say the region has cleaned up its air and it comes after a long and controversial campaign to redeese wood burning. we now meet federal health standards. that's good news for people with asthma and emphysema. >> firefighters in the south bay preparing, though, for the oncoming fire season. santa clara county fire department is conducting a

5:16 am
sharing services. so for instance, in portland, the city regulator might fire up his uber app. uber knew he was a city regulator and he wouldn't see any uber x cars obhis app even though they were around him, and the uber x drivers would know not to pick him up. "the new york times" was the first to reveal the greyball software, but reuters reports federal prosecutors here in the bay area have launched an inquiry. an inquiry is not to the level of a criminal investigation, but either way, it's attracting attention of the feds. generally not a good business. we get the big jobs number in about 15 minutes. the white house will be watching this one carefully. last month's report, the first report that fully encompassed the trump presidency, was very poor. wall street watching that. the french elections are also on investors' radars. that's on sunday. shares in health insurance companies rose thursday after the house passed its health care

5:18 am
sort too. >> this is a business that is here to stay, whether, as you said, he had tried it before or not. a lot of money to be made now. >> that was the green. >> that was the green. there's other green. >> 5:18. the green of a baseball field. look at that glow. the catch of the day in basketball yesterday. not by a player but by a fan. sign this guy up. nice. no need for two hands. >> one-handed catch? >> exactly. can still have a drink from his beer. >> that's impressive. >> it happened in atlanta outside of braves ballpark restaurant. who knew rawhide will be on the menu. you know that? >> i got that. >> looking -- i played baseball. thanks for the explaining of that. >> our writer put that in. it wasn't necessarily for you. i know you played baseball. >> by the way, maybe they need more fans like that. >> and it was right there, went right to his hand. >> he kept his beer in the other hand.
5:19 am
baseball weather. we had hot weather earlier this week. now it's actually comfortable. you can enjoy the game. >> really nice this weekend. temperatures coming down. we will have more clouds in the mix, and it will be windy today, too. that will be the other story. i think that's helped to mix out some of the fog. when the winds kick up, we don't see the persistent low visibility and dense fog that we normally see. it's still misting there and it's 54 degrees in san francisco. 57 degrees in oakland, and 57 right now as you head out the door in san jose. let's get a look at the high temperatures this afternoon. as we will be reaching into the low 70s in east san jose. 73 degrees in morgan hill. gatos today up to 73, and for the east bay, hayward, 70s. concord, 76 degrees. and livermore, 71. we'll be in the upper 60s for most of the peninsula. daley city, a cool 59. and 64 today in the mission district. we will see some low 70s for much of the north bay. so it will be a much cooler
