so that the campaign can't actually talk about politics or defend itself. today the presidential race that's rattled france rattled again late last night. news of a last-minute hacking attack. nine gigabytes of data, thousands of e-mails and documents all stolen a few weeks ago from the campaign of emmanuel macron. this as the country enters a preelection two-day media blackout. it's a massive and coordinated piracy meant to cause doubt and misinformation. no one has claimed responsibility but suspicion already focused on russia. a japanese cyber security firm last week said russians had hacked macron's campaign. moscow denied that charge. >> we are 100% sure that this team is only focusing on opponents to the russian government. >> reporter: the hacked e-mails are mostly trivial. restaurant reservations, talk of

the weather, a few expenses, but macron's campaign says fake e-mails are mixed in with the real ones. france's presidential campaign is looking a lot like america's. marine le pen is a far right populist, is anti-immigration, wants out of the eu and is an admirer of vladimir putin and donald trump. trump has returned the favor and on thursday barack obama endorsed the centrist macron. >> he appeals to people's hopes and not their fears. >> reporter: and french investigators have just confirmed to nbc news that they've arrested a former soldier who apparently had pledged allegiance to isis. so more last-minute tremors shaking this already volatile election. craig? >> matt bradley with that breaking news for us in paris this morning, thank you. speaking of hacking, there's been new movement overnight in the probe of russia's interference into the u.s. election. the senate intelligence committee is now reportedly asking several of president

trump's top advisers for key information. this amid word that michael flinn was warned about his contacts with the russian ambassador during the transition. nbc's kelly o'donnell is live in branchburg, new jersey, with more. >> reporter: good morning. this all brings about a new set of challenges for president trump and the team he has tried to assemble for his administration. new today there are questions about what has happened with the russian investigation, but it goes beyond that as well to public pressure aimed at one of his nominees that forced an abrupt withdrawal to that former national security adviser michael flynn. and suspicions he raised about his contacts with the russian ambassador. questions about russia swirling around the trump administration again this morning. "the washington post" reports former national security adviser michael fliynn was warned about the risks of his contacts with the russian ambassador to the u.s. weeks before the december phone call that led to flynn's resignation.

a former obama administration official confirms to nbc news trump advisers asked to see a cia profile on sergei kisliak, amid concern that flynn did not have a full understanding of the russian ambassador. this as nbc news has learned that former trump adviser carter page has been asked by the senate intelligence committee to turn over any proof of any contacts with the russians. the panel looking into russian interference in the election and whether any trump associates helped to leak damaging information about hillary clinton. meantime, forced out by controversy. >> it is tough to run for office. >> reporter: mark green, president trump's nominee for army secretary, withdrew under pressure friday, accused of bias by the lgbtq community for comments like this. >> you poll psychiatrists. they'll tell you that transgender is a disease.

>> reporter: the human rights campaign that made this video organized to block green. a tennessee state senator he's a west point graduate and doctor who treated iraqi dictator saddam hussein. in a statement green said tragically my life of public service and my christian beliefs have been mischaracterized and attacked for political gain. and we're here in new jersey today because president trump will be spending a number of his weekends over the summer months at his bedminster, new jersey, golf course. on saturday he signed into law an omnibus spending budget and that included $120 million in extra funding for security. some of that for the secret service. others to reimburse local communities like palm beach, florida, and new york city, that have incurred extra costs because of the president's travel. now to a developing story. the white police officer in texas who shot a black teenager to death charged with murder. this morning he's out on bail as the young man's family gets set

to say good-bye. maya rodriguez has the latest. >> reporter: hours after investigators in texas issued an arrest warrant former police officer roy oliver was booked into a dallas area jail for the murder of 15-year-old jordan edwards. >> the news that the man responsible for their son's death was properly charged with murder is a big deal to the family. >> reporter: according to the arrest warrant, it all began last saturday night when police responded to a call about noise at a house party. oliver and another officer responded, and while at the home their police body cameras captured audio of what sounded like gunfire coming from outside. they went to investigate and spotted a vehicle. first seen slowly backing up and then driving away. investigators say oliver fired his patrol rifle into the car several times. jordan edwards was in the front passenger seat. the freshman honors student and football player died from a

gunshot wound to the head. >> i love that kid. it hit home. when i heard, it hit home. >> reporter: initially the police department had the car he was in had moved in a threatening manner toward the officers, but body camera footage showed that was not true. the police chief later apologized for the misinformation and the department fired oliver. >> this is a horrific tragedy. we know the edwards family is grieving. we're in a lot of pain over here, too. >> reporter: oliver's attorney would not comment on the officer's arrest. the family of jordan edwards has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. >> the family's in it for the long haul. charges, proper charges for murder are great, but what they're hoping to see is a conviction. >> reporter: a former police officer now finding himself on the other side of the law. as the family prepares to bury their son later today. maya rodriguez, nbc news. now to pennsylvania where 18 penn state fraternity brothers

have been charged with crimes ranging from aggravated assault to involuntary manslaughter after one student suffered a fatal fall during pledge night. >> good morning. he was a 19-year-old sophomore with his entire life ahead of him. now his family is speaking out after prosecutors say he fell down a flight of stairs and that his frat brothers waited 12 hours to call the cops. 18 college students now facing criminal charges. members of the fraternity at penn state arraigned friday after a drunk member fell down the stairs of their frat house and died. >> this is the result of the feeling of entitlement, flagrant disobedience of the law. >> reporter: the charges come three months after prosecutors say 19-year-old timothy piazza participated in a pledge night event called the gauntlet. >> they made the pledges run from station to station and drink enormous amounts of

alcohol. >> reporter: prosecutors say video shows piazza fell down the stairs at 11:00 p.m. a defense member for one of the members says the frat brothers never intended to hurt their friend. >> there has to be some form of intent. we think that is not present in this case. >> reporter: the next morning investigators say when piazza wouldn't wake up almost 12 hours later, the frat brothers called 911. >> some of them described that he looked dead. well, some of them buggoogled things like what to do with a head injury. >> reporter: 18 members and the fraternity itself now face charges from aggravated assault to hazing, eight of them charged with involuntary manslaughter. >> involuntary manslaughter is one of the lower level offenses related to a death. it doesn't mean you tried to kill someone or wanted to, but it does mean that you had a role in causing someone's death. >> reporter: the fraternity has since disbanded the chapter calling the charges incredibly disheartening. in a statement penn state

promised aggressive measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring, assurances that bring little peace to the family of a 19-year-old sophomore. >> this did not have to happen. no parent should have to deal with this. >> reporter: now, since piazza's death penn state has banned all social activities involving alcohol for the rest of the semester. they've even been monitoring social events and have vowed to shut down any fraternity that violates those rules. craig, sheinelle? >> thank you. the end of a dangerous standoff in massachusetts. a suspect shot a police officer in the face then holed up in a motel room in braintree, massachusetts. s.w.a.t. teams surrounded that motel, vehicevacuated the terri guests and took them to safe shelter. the suspected shooter who was found dead this morning and the police officer is doing well and expected to recover. country music legend loretta lynn is recovering from a stroke

>> one little note here. i pick out my dress, then christine ward designs my hat and then the weather happens. it's been so chilly. it's very cold right now. i don't recommend sleeveless for anyone in the area. it will be chilly out for the horses that are trying to warm up out there this morning. but the track is good. we had nearly two inches of rain with the storm system that moved through yesterday. but we are going to see that rain move eastward. it's already exiting parts of down east maine but another round of showers trying to move in. an hour or so away from the louisville area. then we'll see a quick heavy downpour, then that will possibly move away in time for post time later on today. i'd say by 2:00 or so, we'll get breaks of sunshine, then scattered showers. temperatures should get back up to 60 degrees, but that's still about 15 degrees below average for this time of year. but it

even in san francisco at 49 degrees. very windy right now. we take a look at the current wind speeds in san francisco, 23 miles per hour. half moon bay 23 miles per hour. but we're seeing conditions between 35 miles per hour overnight. we are expected to remain under the wind advisory through tonight and expecting a much breezier sunday. but today's forecast a lot cooler in the 50s for the coastline and 60s. >> looks good, vianey. thanks. flaring at the refinery raises conditions especially with all this wind. you can see the plumes of thick black smoke and toxins sent into the air yesterday. valero said a power outage triggered the flaring in order to burn off explosive particles. it triggered a shelter in place for two schools. this isn't the first time that valero has polluted the air.
